Where To Eat Down The Shore: Long Beach Island - New York - The Infatuation

"There’s going to be a wait at Mustache Bill’s, but whether you need to rock, paper, scissors for who has to go early and put a name in or you plan to kill time by cheating at mini-golf across the street, you should find a way to eat here. This cash-only diner near the lighthouse in Barnegat Light feels like it probably hasn’t changed much since it opened in the ’50s, with simple green swivel stools at the counter and a few booths lining the wall of the narrow space. It’s open from 6am-3pm, with a huge menu that ranges from eggs and pancakes to cheesesteaks and fried seafood platters, but no matter what you order, you’re going to leave full and happy." - Matt Tervooren, Tonya Russell

The Jersey Shore’s Top Restaurants | Eater NY

"Mustache Bill’s has an accolade that only three other Jersey Shore restaurants can claim: a highly regarded James Beard Award (and a Guy Fieri visit). This no-frills diner was named an America’s Classic in 2009 by the restaurant-celebrating organization for its “straight-from-the-heart cooking” of local seafood, pancakes, and hearty dinner platters. The restaurant manages to do 1,000 covers on a typical summer day, so it’s always packed." - Stefanie Tuder

Miss this place . Best shrimp and grits I ever had. Would kill for the recipe. If the owner / chef sees this please send me the recipe

My first time at Mustache Bill’s Diner - the food, service and prices were all better than I’d expected at such a convenient place.

Google
3.5 Stars. Took a day trip with friends. It was raining so we went here to wait for the sky to clear so we can go out with our boats. Food was okay. Basic. Nothing Special. Foodwise.. hust don’t expect anything much. Service was very good though. Very attentive. All the servers were nice.

Google
CASH ONLY. For a diner this place is fantastic!!! The food is fresh! The service is great! Clean! Open for dine inside or outside. Their omelets are wonderful. Our favorite was the liverwurst & onion sandwich! Second best was the potato skin omelette. My son loved the fried clam platter (I thought they were a little chewy). Thumbs up 👍 to this place. One of the best diners we have been to with regard to the food!

Google
I could only give this place three stars just based on the good service. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. The prices are very reasonable. The food on the other hand is a different story. After reading so many rave reviews about this place (which I don't know why) I had to check this place out before going to the Barnegat Lighthouse. I got an omelet with home fries. Now being from Brooklyn, NY I know how home fries are supposed to look and taste. These home fries tasted like boiled potatoes with a sprinkle of paprika for color. These potatoes were definitely not fried or baked. No salt. No pepper. No onions. No flavor. The omelet was decent. The spinach that was in the omelet tasted like it came from a can, which I was kind of bummed because I love fresh spinach in my eggs. The best thing on the plate (or paper plate that is) was the toast. The overall appearance of this place had a 1950's look that needs an upgrade. Would I come here again if I am ever in the area? Maybe not.

Google
Fun, cozy diner with fabulous food! Although the menu would be considered "typical American breakfast", the quality of the cooking & food is unsurpassed. The flavor of their grits was heavenly as were the english muffins and everything here is done to perfection! Fun, friendly servers and a must-visit while on LBI! Go early to avoid wait times. Cash only. 5-stars across the board!

Google
Bill is the best!! This classic diner is a staple for Barnegat Light and a MUST stop for breakfast. Much love for this place!!

Google
Pancakes are undoubtedly the best on the island and quite possibly the best I've ever had. Everything is made fresh to order. Eggs are always cooked perfectly. You won't find a better breakfast on LBI. That all being said, this place gets VERY busy. Like there will be people waiting outside from 9am-noon busy. There is almost always a wait. I would recommend calling ahead of time and seeing if you can get put on the waitlist if you plan on eating there. Also cash only.

Yelp
Been coming here for decades- hands down best real food...real turkey, real meat.... Quality every time.

Yelp
Please support Mustache Bill's - they are trying to sell the business. Keep our beloved diner open! Nick has been a server for 15 years! Cash Only. Excellent Blueberry French toast. So many memories here. Love this place. PLEASE DON'T CLOSE it nor Bulldoze it.

Yelp
Fine breakfast, nothing special. We heard Mustache Bill's was closing after this season, so thought we should experience it. Our server Pam was busy talking to anyone and everyone more so than focusing on her job. She convinced me to get a juice that I didn't originally order, then never brought it. Another server had to yell out to her from the kitchen to let her know our food was ready. All the other servers were on their game, but she was busy gossiping about everyone in town and a wedding she had been to. I wish we just had someone different, as we probably would have had a better experience. Food was fine. My blueberry pancakes were pretty light on the blueberries and not the best pancakes I've ever had. Corned beef hash was cooked well done as I requested - which is not always done well. Bacon egg and cheese had a lot of bacon, but home fries tasted like they were cooked in old oil. There's definitely better places on the island to get breakfast, and at more reasonable prices. It wasn't that cheap given the volume and quality.

George S.

Yelp
Had the orange juice and eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce had a hint of lemon which added to the benny. The potatoes were tasty and filling. The best part is the prices may be the best on LBI. A mu

Yelp
Take a good look, because this place may not be here in the near future. There are not many of these New Jersey diner models still left to enjoy and nice breakfast like back in the 70s. Always a pleasure to visit when in town.

Eric T.

Yelp
Excellent food at affordable prices. The Servers are very pleasant and attentive. It is Cash Only, which is fine, if you know that beforehand.

Yelp
Pleasure to dine at Mustache Bill's. Went for breakfast today, we put our name down and only waited about 5 minutes but I've been told that's lucky. I ordered blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon and an iced coffee. Also tried the grits. Everyone else got some variation of pancakes as well. Everything was so so good and after ordering we only waited for about 10 minutes. Perfect diner food! The vibe was very laid back and old school.

Yelp
Solid greasy spoon, nostalgia diner. Food is never anything to write home about but worth going to if you're in the area. Service is always quick and the quaint diner makes you feel at home.

Yelp
This review was written, with a mustache. My mustache - in fact - was the largest seen in Mustache Bill's Diner all day! From the outside this diner has the look of a metal hangar or a silver-plated retro restaurant. Inside the digs were comfortable, fitting - with a large and wide galley - and non-adjustable seats with built-in cushions. The views were of town. The service by waitresses behind the counter - as can be viewed in the pictures attached - was slow and quite stuffy. My wait to get an order in took longer than waiting for the tides to change.. There was not much talk. The waitresses were simply at the bar themselves: eating while on shift. As a Yelp! customer how do you think this makes a diner appreciate the meal - when the waitress is herself busy stuffing her jowls? Come on. Waitresses should eat in the kitchen or AFTER. their work shift. Don't rest on the laurels of your food, drinks and shakes (awesome, tasty though they were..)! My Reuben sandwich was perfection and I shoved and gobbled as much as I could of it while it was still in a hot state. The fries were genuinely great! Soft yet crunchy-ended shoestrings with flavor. There were also kitchen help coming out up front to drink (they should stay in back). There were customers gawking and talking behind other patron's and waitresses backs (just don't). Really the wait staff just dropped the ball: plain + simple. Fantastic food. Moderate, beachy-vibe, expensive shakes type menu. Don't come to personalize the order - just eat your meal and drink and have an awesome beach day! Review: suave, cool interior - great food - grumpy underdressed waitresses. 5 star

Yelp
Good food, friendly service, an old favorite from days gone by! First time I've been there in years, and it was just like I remembered!

Yelp
New fav breakfast spot on LBI!!! Our server (Amy) was PHENOMENAL!! Such a sweetheart and absolutely hilarious. Super attentive too despite the rush!! The interior is very cute and the food was spectacular. 10/10

Yelp
Great nostalgic diner experience with great service. I like that the diner caters to families. Delicious pancakes made in various shapes but would prefer butter (instead of margarine).

Yelp
The best shore diner!! Our server was great and this was exactly the kind of late Sunday vibe we needed. We loved the hot ham and cheese and the omelets.

Paulette C.

Yelp
Food is excellent and highly recommend the pancakes. Service is great. Wish it was opened all year round

Yelp
Nothing earth shattering but a decent omelette and portion for the price. Service was quick and waitress was pleasant. Overall no complaints just not sure I would go running back. Note that this place is Cash only. (Which I strongly dislike... we are in the 21st century people!)

Yelp
Mustache Bills serves good quality (but not great) food with some inconveniences -- such as cash only. Stopped here the other day and the pancakes were a big hit but my wife and I both felt our eggs tasted yukky. Maybe the grill wasn't clean or they sprayed something that got absorbed into the eggs. Disappointing because I paid over $13 for an omelette and didn't eat much of it. I guess it's best to stick with the pancakes.

Yelp
Historic diner on n BL. Great breakfast! If you go with kids, and they aren't too busy, they will make pancakes in the shape of different characters. The wait staff are terrific and they are always welcoming.

Yelp
Great diner! Great service and great food. It's been around for years and always is great. Very popular so bring your patience and cash only.

Yelp
Gold mine love this plane keeping the dream alive of the true American diner ! The happiest diner on earth !

Yelp
Old school fairly small neighborhood diner, Friday to Sunday only and seasonal (from Mother's Day Weekend in 2022). There are some tables available outside as well. Excellent (all day) breakfast. Fast and friendly service. Cash only.

Yelp
This is my favorite diner. I don't go down to the beach often, but when I do we always make sure to stop at Mustache Bills. The blueberry pancakes are so fluffy and absolutely outstanding. The clam chowder is also a must try. Everything here is great and I love the classic diner atmosphere and the view of the lighthouse.
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
My FAVORITE breakfast spot! Best pancakes, my husband loves the cheese steaks, and we always get a quart of turkey gravy for thanksgiving!!
google avatar

Yelp
Always liked this place but it's cash only, and always a line on weekends when family is here...rumor has it, the lot is up for sale. It's closing ?

Yelp
This place is a hidden treasure. The staff was super friendky, and even told me what the specials were for the next day. Eggs Benedict with lox! Omg so delicious. Will definitely go there again.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Hands down the best diner in ALL of NJ. Where else can you get a James Beard award winning breakfast or lunch? And their pancakes might be the best in the country if I had a vote.
google avatar

Heidi O.

Yelp
A must stop if your on LBI. Be prepared to wait in the sun once season hits, benched provided . Very clean and bright. Excellent pancakes and omelettes, have not tried the French toast but sure looks good. Good coffee and corn muffin. I think they were on the Food Networks Diner, Dives and Drive Inn's a while back. Kind of a landmark.

Yelp
What a wonderful Diner! My mom and I had breakfast together and the food was perfect. It's exactly what a real New Jersey diner is supposed to be. A mixture of locals and people just passing through town visiting. The staff is extra nice and greet you with a smile when you come through the door. They had daily specials up on the board and also a long list of omelettes that you can choose from in the menu. For the diner being completely full the food still came out pretty quickly and exactly what we ordered. My mom and I both got omelettes which were cooked perfect with lots of filling in them. We also shared a side of cinnamon raisin bread french toast. So good! I highly recommend coming here when you're in the area for a really good meal.
google avatar

Rose F.

Yelp
We came for breakfast and should have read the reviews first and ordered either the French toast or hot cakes. I got the cream chipped beef and hubs got the two eggs, grits and ham. Both were good - not spectacular. It's cash only and plan on a wait unless you get here when it opens at 6am. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday's and only open until 3 I will definitely come back and try the hot cakes or stop for lunch as they had a lot of interesting lunch choices.
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Great local diner for breakfast or lunch! Everything is delicious and it's worth the wait.
google avatar

Shaun T.

Yelp
Absolutely love Mustache Bill's. Been coming for years, not as a regular, but as a summer visitor. We always go "early". Before 9am and walk right in. Kids (now teens) still order the shaped pancakes. Fantastic breakfast sandwiches. Usual diner fare. Show up "late" on a weekend in the summer, like everyone else.....yeah you will have to wait, but it's breakfast and moves. Plan accordingly and get here!! Like most of Barnaget Light, CASH only.

Erica M.

Yelp
Classic, old school diner. However, very tasty! Omelettes are big and delicious. Better than your average omelette for sure. Blueberry French toast is excellent too. My only complaint is staff does not wear gloves, which I am usually okay with as they are not the ones making the food. However, they do butter the toast with no gloves which I was a bit taken back by.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Went for breakfast. Large tasty portions, great atmosphere and staff. I recommend the fresh crab and mushroom omelette.

Donna P.

Yelp
Unable to seat people fairly. Told we had a 30 minute wait. After 30 minutes we were told 3 tables ahead of us, then 5 minutes later we were told 7 tables ahead of us! What's going on? Not worth waiting any longer for mediocre food or service.

Will M.

Yelp
I love this place. Great breakfast and staff. Never disappointed. I'll be there again this week at least twice!

Shawn M.

Yelp
Good food at decent price. Only thing missing is waffles . Only real breakfast place in Barnegat Light.

Yelp
After visiting the lighthouse, my girlfriend and I asked the ladies in the museum for a breakfast recommendation in the area. They both immediately name dropped Bill's. After eating there I can see why. It's an intimate little restaurant great for a cheap and quick breakfast. The ladies also mentioned that you can ask for your pancake in just about any shape you'd like, and Bill himself will make it. My girlfriend took that as a challenge and when ordering asked for a Darth Vader shaped pancake. To our surprise, when her pancake came out, it was instantly recognizable as Kylo Ren. (Wrong Star Wars villain but close enough) He even had a lightsaber. We were beyond impressed. Only complaint is that the place is cash only. Which is especially frustrating when the closest ATM across the street isn't functioning. But if you have the cash, PLEASE check this place out and ask for a custom pancake.

Monica T.

Yelp
Classic family beach diner! Went for the first time last weekend on Sunday. There was a 20 minute wait for our party of 6+baby when we got there at 1:45pm. I got The Popeye and OHMYGOD best decision I made all weekend. A spinach wrap with shrimp, mozzarella, garlic, and spinach. I didn't know the whole wrap was going to come warm but I'm so glad it did -- it really made the wrap different than anything I've ever tried. My mouth is watering as I write this... Like most places on the island, it's cash only so come prepared because they don't have an ATM. Final note - You know the place has to be great if Guy Fieri has been there for "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives"!
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
Day trip to LBI with the fam. We're from Jersey, so we know diners. One thing we like to do when on vacation in other states is to try restaurants we have seen featured on DDD. Funny thing though... we'd never been to any of Guy's finds in our home state. So, we planned a day at the shore and I built it around beginning at the north end of the island so brunch could be had on a Friday at Mustache Bill's. It was packed when we arrived and I got the last parking spot in the lot. We put our name in and settled back for a wait. It was about 25 minutes before we were called. Very hot day, we were seated below the ac unit and the small diner was still warm. Our booth was on the small side, but this is a tiny authentic shiny silver diner! I like that, but the place doesn't have to contain all of the dirt it has accumulated since the 1950's. The ac unit I mentioned earlier? It dripped a bit behind us, the mirror next to us was dirty, there was a hair in the window sill behind us and I am not going to talk about the restroom. The food was our focus. Guy called the chipped beef "money". My husband had it over toast and I had it over homefries. It was very good chipped beef, but not excellent. It still needed salt and pepper added. Also, for those who care, the homefries were actually breakfast potatoes. The dish came with nothing else. We had to order scrapple and bacon separately. Our bacon was initially forgotten and by the time we got the attention of our waitress and asked for it, we were almost done everything else. Coffee was overpriced and not typical diner-delicious. Our daughter had french toast and really enjoyed it. All in all, the food was fine, but nothing wowed us. Service was pretty good. Prices were high. I remember when breakfast was a cheap meal. I also remember when sides, coffee, toast and juice were included in the price of the meal. Things have changed, I realize that, but this simple meal cost us $50 for 3 people. It is one of only a handful of spots to eat at in Barnegat Light.

Yelp
First time here and their stellar reputation is spot-on! Adorable retro vibe and our waitress was friendly, informative, and quick. We had come from a flea market at nearby Viking Village where one of the vendors was eating an amazing looking turkey sandwich. I was starving so I tried to buy it from him for $1 as I bargained for a couple of coup glasses, but he laughed and tightened his grip (I may have seemed as if I was going to snatch it out of his hands). That's what prompted us to go out for lunch, so I was primed when I walked in the door and saw a turkey club on their menu. The pressure was high. But, the home-roasted turkey on whole wheat with the perfect combo of tomato, mayo, crispy bacon and lettuce met the challenge! My husband had heard they were known for their pancakes, but he wanted the crabcake, so our helpful waitress said we could order just one pancake to try. She must have been right about their seasoned grill being the trick because it was possibly the best we ever had. Finally, hubby's crabcake was fantastic: crispy exterior (that dang grill!), excellent flavor, and way more crab than breading. Earlier in the day I had a hankering for avocado toast, but didn't see it on the menu. Until I noticed it as a special on the white board after I ordered. My momentary disappointment was immediately abated at the first bite of my sandwich. Plus, excellent reason to come back. Definitely go before they close for the season!

Yelp
3.5 Stars Decided to venture here on a Sunday drive with my wife. Great location on the northern most point of Long Beach Island. I've heard all of the buzz from DD&D about the creamed chipped beef, but on arrival I was torn between that and the cream cheese and scallion omelet (one of my favorite combinations). The waitress was very helpful and told me to order the omelet and she would bring out a cup of the creamed chipped beef to try over my home fried potatoes (she didn't even charge for the generous sampling). Everything tasted good and the coffee had just the right amount of kick. I had a bite of my wife's blueberry pancakes which were chocked full of whole blueberries...very tasty. After breakfast we ventured to the top of the nearby lighthouse to work off some of the calories. I would recommend this iconic diner to anybody wandering close to Long Beach Island. P.S. CASH ONLY!

Yelp
Classic all-American, Jersey diner! The food is too-notch! They serve the most perfect omelettes I've ever seen or tasted-- very Instagram worthy! No brown dryness or edges, just perfectly symmetric, bright yellow, fluffy omelettes, with your choice of a flurry of add-ins! Western with cheese (cheddar) is a staple, and the potato skin is amazing as well! Sandwiches are also huge and all fabulously homemade! My go-to's are the grilled ham and Swiss on rye (mouth watering) and the open face hot turkey (real turkey, not lunchmeat) with cran, mashed, stuffing, gravy-wow! Just like Thanksgiving leftovers! Let's not forget the handcut, shoestring fries (I always sub out the home fries for French fries at breakfast, but the home fries are good too), and thenPhilly cheesesteaks--not too far from Philly, so done correctly! This place gets really busy, and seating is first come first served. There's usually a line out the door, especially on weekends. Open till 3pm and cash only. In the off-season, hey are only open on weekends. Enjoy!
google avatar

Tyrone M.

Yelp
Really love this place. Guy Fieri's been here! Decent pricing. Kinda close to the lighthouse. Does get busy sometimes, so if you're in a larger group (4+), you may have to wait a bit. Good pancakes, and you can ask for cool shapes (like a sailboat). Get a blueberry muffin and ask them to grill it -- so good! Home fries aren't very crispy unfortunately. Overall, solid choice for breakfast. I've never tried any of the lunch items, but they look good too!

Linda R.

Yelp
Great breakfast and wonderful people working there! We have always been happy when we go to Mustache Bills. Ordered 5 omelets to go this morning and had a little communication/technology error while ordering my food so my order was not put in when I got there but some how they were able to get my 5 omelette out in 8 minutes. Everything was hot and so good and we got to enjoy our food in our own home. Even during these unforeseen mustache bills is doing a wonderful job of accommodating for their customers needs.
google avatar

Donald K.

Yelp
Good food, cash only which is fine with me. Good social distances. Off season is best. Lot led locals which is nice. Close to lighthouse, parking easy.
google avatar

Jerry L.

Yelp
This has been around since the late 1950s as one of the oldest in LBI, it's a must go to spot and you feel like Marty from Back to the Future when he meets his father for the first time at the diner, ever since it made it on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives and rated as one of the best diners in NJ by food blogger Pete Genovese, you gotta try the 3 egg homemade omelettes sand you create your own, they have grits & chipped beef! I would recommend the Trenton Omelet which is pork roll/Taylor ham with cheese and home fries $9.95. If you're looking for a sandwich the hot turkey sandwich with their homemade gravy is also a popular one $9.95. Enjoy!

Ben H.

Yelp
We just had a 3 night vacation on Long Beach Island and we stayed in an airbnb next door. We ate breakfast three times and lunch once here. My son loved the oatmeal and we loved the blueberry french toast. Debbie and Kelly were both very friendly and fun to talk to This is cash only, FYI.

Richard A.

Yelp
Down n dirty small diner. We love this place for breakfast. Staff is always friendly.
google avatar

Olivia G.

Yelp
I love this place! Every time I come to LBI multiple trips to mustache bills is a must! The fisherman's special is the best option on the menu in my opinion as it gives you a little bit of everything! Although there is a bit of a wait it's always worth it. You can also call ahead and put your name down for a specific time which is a trick - especially on busy days! If you haven't been, go!
