Atlanta Restaurants: Mutation Brewing Brings Beer, Barbecue and a Speakeasy and Rooftop Bar to Sandy Springs - Eater Atlanta

"Longtime friends Jack Poole and Chris Shapiro plan to open Mutation Brewing Co. in Sandy Springs this winter. The brewery takes over the former Taqueria Tsunami space on Roswell Road. It should offer between eight to 12 beers on tap, to-go growlers, and hard seltzers once the brewery is fully operational. One drink that could make the opening menu at Mutation is a take on a Peruvian drink called the chicha made with purple corn, according to the AJC. Seating around 250 people between the taproom, U-shaped bar, partially covered patio, and a rooftop bar, expect food from Roswell-based Spiced Right Barbecue and a hidden speakeasy bar, which will initially be used for private events, but could eventually open for late nights. As for the patio and rooftop bar, expect those to be dog- and kid-friendly and include large-scale lawn games like Jenga and Connect Four." - Beth McKibben

The staff is friendly. Service is efficient. Space is cool with the exception of so many dirty tables. Patio is really cool and we love 99X so that made for a Sunday Funday.

First time here Jack is very personable and nice. I ordered a flavored seltzer it’s quite delicious. If they had this in 6 packs I would definitely buy them. The bar is clean and had ample seating. The venue is big enough to rent out. There is a private party being set up and it’s still plenty of room for other patrons I see they have an upstairs patio as well. I ordered the buffalo wrap with beer cheese fries from the dogwood. The QR code is really easy to order through.

Great Venue in a great location. Lots of bar seats, and tables. Tons of games to grab and play while you enjoy a cold one!

Visited today, 2nd attempt to visit. Very nice facility located near the interstate. Convenient. Was a little disappointed to see that 3 items were tapped out, 2 of which were what I came in for. With that being said, they still had several options available to make a good flight of 4-5oz pours. The beer was pretty good and they definitely deserve a return visit. All 4 were true to style and flavorful. The taproom is nice and there are lots of things to do while you enjoy the beer. I sat at the window looking into the brewing room and was a little shocked to see it cluttered and disorganized. I can imagine this brewery goes nuts on Friday and Saturday evenings because they have a very good product and an inviting facility.

Visited for the first time today with friends. Had a great time! Staff and beer was amazing! Had 2 wonderful bartenders today, but only remembered one of their names Emma. Great job and wonderful conversations. Cheers 🍻 !

Great beers, good atmosphere and staff is friendly. They host a free/donation based yoga class on Sunday mornings too! The food is really good too - definitely recommend The Fuego

What a vibe! Many areas to explore and chill out. Great selection and prices on the beer. Very dog friendly! Everyone we encountered working here was so friendly and pleasant. We will definitely come back next time we're in town!

Google
Interesting beer selection and a great hangout spot to play some board games and hide from the summer heat. Our group of 8 tried several different beers and everything was pleasant. My wheat beer was full bodied and refreshing at the same time. Very chill atmosphere and bonus points for being dog friendly!

Yelp
Had an amazing time working with Mutation Brewing to host my 10 year high school reunion for a local Sandy Springs high school. Thank you so much to Chris and the team at Mutation for being so friendly and helpful during the planning/booking and event duration. While I don't live in the area anymore, Chris was super helpful at sending over diagrams and jumping on the phone with me to discuss the venue layout, pricing, and additional add ons. They are very accustomed to hosting private events here and the space is very nice including both indoor, outdoor, and games like pong tables. When you rent the space you are free to decorate it however you like and we did a capped open bar which worked out perfectly for our group. Everyone had a great time and they are also dog friendly! Thank you!

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends or by yourself. Lots of TVs and everyone is friendly. They have a large bar that's comfortable to sit at and chat, watch tv or do some work on your laptop. Several locals were there watching college football, especially the Georgia game. They were friendly and having a good time. The food looked good but I didn't eat any. The beer was a little lackluster. The Oktoberfest had a good flavor but felt more commercial and less craft. The malt flavor was good but not noteworthy. I also had the Hooked on Phoenix (Book 4) Pale Ale. It was smooth and had good flavor. I look forward to visiting again and trying a flight so I can taste more of their brews.

Yelp
My partner is a sucker for local breweries so I accompanied him as his plus one. It seems like there are a lot more local breweries per capita than in LA. The 99x beer on tap was crisp and delicious. We ordered the chips with queso and salsa which were lackluster. The casual vibe and friendly staff made up for it though. We will be back to try their burgers and hard seltzer.

Yelp
Lots of parking, food rotates depending on the day/event. Beer pong tables, swings at the tables outside and they always have the game on! Tap selection is great but ask Kegs or any of the amazing staff for their recommendations or some exclusive pours! Easily a spot I will drop by again and again to grab a beer. Sundays they do a great little outside market- plants, IV drips, and One59 hemp products to shop which was nice to browse through! Thank you Mutation y'all are amazing!!

Yelp
Dropped in here for the 99x event. Fairly new brewery (pretty sure this place was a Tsunami Taqueria before) but in a very busy spot on Roswell Road, right off 285. There is lots of parking and they are dog friendly. Atmosphere and ambiance here is fantastic. They have plenty of side rooms with games and patios and upstairs patios and a speak easy. They also have swings to sit in. Probably my favorite set-up of any brewery I've been to. It was insanely crowded as the day went on. Lead singer of Cracker was on hand to play some of their hits. We had the Buffalo chicken dip and big ass pretzel. Both ok. It took over an hour and a half to get the food. Apparently too many people ordering on their app crashes it. They did comp the food for us. The beer I had was the blonde, 99x experiment and the green apple seltzer. The 99x one was my fave. The blonde was not what I was expecting and tasted more like an ipa. I'm not a big fan of seltzer, as is, and this one was just meh. Will prob need to go back and try other beers, as the lines just got crazy long. Overall, a fun way to spend the day! Would like to explore all the other rooms.

Yelp
Came here because my friend was participating in a hot wing challenge. This was my first time although I've driven past many times. I was impressed as far as breweries go. They have plenty of parking, lots of board games, several events throughout the month and lots of space inside. I didnt eat or drink on this visit but I look forward to coming back and trying the food.

Yelp
Fun place to visit! Great drinks and great vibes. The owner is such a ball of energy and created a fun environment. They offer boozy slushies, water pong tournaments, and food. The slush and peanut butter beer was most memorable drinks. It can get crowded but generally everyone was pretty nice.

Yelp
Gave Mutation Brewing Company a try because even if I don't like drinking, my friends sure do. Although I don't like drinking overall, I can still enjoy a good beer. Will I find that at Mutation Brewing Company? Good is of course a subjective evaluator. I didn't find anything on Mutation's menu that interested me at all. Tried one of their sours, and it was good not great. My friend loved their German Amber. My friend tried one of their seltzer slushies, and it was kind of bad. Seltzer slushies are like canned water. You understand on an intuitive level that there's minimal flavor, if any. You still want more because of what you traditionally taste when drinking a slushy or a drink from a can. Mutation's service and ambiance were both top notch. This is an excellent place to hang out. They have Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots! Good enough beer and food combined with a great ambiance make Mutation Brewing Company a terrific place to hang out.

Yelp
I visited MBC for a birthday gathering for my good friend. This place is right off of 285 in Sandy Springs. The Parking: They have a parking lot with free parking. The Atmosphere: It's basically a nice bar with food. They have a lot of free games to play while you drink. They also have three arcade games that requires quarters to play. The Service: Everyone here was nice! The Food: The food here is really good. I had the Hot or Not Chicken Sandwich with waffle fries and onion rings! BUSSIN! I don't drink alcohol, so I can't speak on the beers but everyone seemed to enjoy them. Overall, this place is FAR from where I live, but I hope they last because I want to come back!

Yelp
Great chill spot, dogs everywhere, very dog friendly, lots of beer and seltzers! Sugar free and not! Froze and not! Servers are friendly! Harry Potter trivia tonight WOO!

Yelp
So they partner with a company that lets you order by scanning a barcode at each table. Very convenient. Grab a drink, sit down, scan a code, place an order, pay. That's it. So easy. I ended up getting the Fried Pickles, the Reuben sandwich with onion rings and an order of the beer cheese Mac and cheese. I got to try the fries and they seemed way too salty that day, so I got onion rings. The fried pickles were tasty. I wasn't a fan of the ranch, so if they had a Cajun dip it might have been a better combo. The Reuben was great though. The meat was thick cut. Not too much sauce and sauerkraut. Then it was perfectly grilled to have the crunchy bite you expect. It was a definite 10/10. I then ate some of the beer cheese Mac and cheese. This was pretty tasty, but very thick and super creamy. They also throw bacon into it, so when you eat it, it's heavy. Defiantly a good Reuben. Maybe one of my favorites in town. The meat they have melts in your mouth. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Me and some of my friends came in here the other day just to catch up. It was my first time coming here and I thought it was a pretty cool concept. For my drink, I tried the strawberry colada drink. I thought it was pretty good especially if you like something sweet. Everyone else seemed to also really enjoy their beer. Given it a brewery I know the emphasis is more on beer so just a call out,but they do not serve liquor it's either just beer or the seltzer that they have. I initially tried to order a vodka soda since I'm not much of a beer drinker, but that's not an option. I loved that. They had games to play all around as well. I'm a sucker for a fun game and it's good with a group of people. I'd recommend this if you're looking for a good vibe with friends!

Yelp
Mutation Brewing is a great brewery in Sandy Springs, just north of the Perimeter. They have a huge space, including a large patio with a rooftop deck! I love that they allow dogs inside! They also offered our pup a treat. The bartenders are always friendly and attentive. The beer is solid, and I like their seltzers! They have a variety of flavors. They have a restaurant inside that you can order food from. They also have a stock of board games and arcade games. It's just a fun place to hang out!

Yelp
I wasn't sure I was going to like this place when i found it online. It looks like a cross between a doctors office and an 80s movie prom, and it's just not what I'm used to. When I arrived, "Kegs" the bartender greeted me and walked me through the menu. He was easy going and helpful, and I appreciated his guidance. He even offered something brand new and not yet on the menu to taste, making this a unique experience. The beers are overall very good and I was excited to try more -- standouts were the Big Drinkus and Liquid Hot Magma IPAs, the Pilsner was also very good, and the Teddy Brewsevelt was tasty, too. I also appreciated their fruited sour, but that is not the beer I would come back here for (The Big Drinkus is return worthy). The atmosphere is like a divorced dad's basement, lots of cool grey and black, spartan furnishings and an uncomfortable amount of neon. But it works. Mutation is the brewery I didn't realize I needed to hang out at more often.

Yelp
Love this brewery!! Always have great time here and the service and beers are great! They have a lot of game and it's a super chill and relaxing atmosphere all around!

Yelp
Mutation brewery is such a fun spot right on Roswell road!! I mean look at how cute those swings are. Those tables fit 8 people and you can swing while enjoying a great beer. I really liked the beer I tried from here! They make some in house. The food on the other hand was a bit of miss for me. I ordered the fried shrimp and it tasted very fishy. I normally love fried shrimp, but unfortunately this whole plate of food went to waste. Luke loved his cheesesteak, so I think I would go again and just try something different! I think it deserves a second chance for sure!! This was a fun spot tho, we enjoyed it before going to a movie.

Yelp
Jack, the owner and CEO, knows his beer! I came in desperate need of something sweet and strong, and he was great to make the recommendations. I was coming in thinking about a cider, but I ended up trying the hard seltzer. To my surprise, it was very customizable and tasty. It's one of though drinks where you can make it as sweet as you like with as much alcohol content as you please. It was also very flavorful and had a nice color to it. I liked how after chugging about half of the dragon fruit and guava with a 5.1% alcohol content, I was buzzed and happy as can be. The honey mango and Hawaiian mixture was also tasty in my books. There were other draft varieties, coffee flavored, and even frozen type drinks. Ooh. And the mac & cheese is delicious by the way. The brisket was pretty tasty as well. Jack was really educational giving us a quick breakdown of the beer process. I only heard bits and parts, but he seemed passionate about it. He said they strive for a quality beer having their yeast imported from the Netherlands (?). It sounds so fancy right?! Mutation Brewing Company was a very spacious spot, both with the interior and exterior spaces. I enjoyed the variety of seating arrangements: usual bar seats, high table tops, booths, picnic style tables outside, smaller intimate tables, and saving the best for last these really modern swinging chairs (I should have really snapped a picture). They also had corn hole and a beer pong table set up! There were also televisions playing in the background. I also forgot to mention the high patio area up the stairs for additional privacy. Parking was also plentiful.

Yelp
Had to change our child on the floor of the men's restroom since they didn't have a changing table. We got food which is apparently a different company, one item as missing but they eventually brought it. The chicken fingers and fries were very tasty and I would order them again. We came on Sunday which is half price seltzer day. They have lots of flavors to choose from which surprised me how many they made. Then I found out that it is just a squirt of syrup flavoring they use. We did order beers too and those were good and we love supposed local brewery. The interior is a more industrial look and is very clean. They have a few video games inside to play, jenga blocks, and outside seating has some swings at the tables to sit on.

Yelp
You can find Mutation Brewing Company at 5825 Roswell Rd NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. This is right off I285 just outside the Perimeter, I believe it was the former location of a Taqueria Tsunami. Parking is out front and continues towards the back of the property, there appears to be plenty for the brewery's capacity - I've found no issues when I've stopped by. I first heard about Mutation by running into Jack, one of the owners at Cultivation Brewing in Norcross (another very worthwhile brewery to visit). He gave me a little background about the brewery and then it was a matter to see if it actually opened (with Covid it's always iffy) and then give it a few weeks to "burn in" to work through any bugs. I've heard through the Beer-nerd grapevine that it's been pretty well attended and received by locals - the only other breweries in Sandy Springs is the exceptional Pontoon Brewing a bit further north, and Porter Pizza Brewery a bit further south and west (I'm not sure if the latter is still open?) This is a much bigger brewery than it appears from the street - it actually extends further back than than it looks, feature a very large taproom with a centralized bar - there's also a "secret speakeasy) with a door hidden behind a crowler rack that allows access to the original bar (presumably from back when it was Tsunami or maybe Neapolitan prior to that?) - they indicated that it would be offered up as event space - that room also features a window that allows you to view the brewhouse which was much larger than I had anticipated. The bathroom was immaculate, made up for all the green lighting. I've tried: * Juicy Inferno West Coast IPA - * Mutation Hard Seltzer base 3/5 - * Get Skimmy Milk Stout - *ATL Traffic Elixir Double IPA - * Liquid Hop Magma NEIPA - I was a bit harsh on the beer but it's my feeling that if you don't give up your opinion the brewers don't know what to adjust. Service was very good, but the about half the beer on the taplist was finished so I was only able to sample the five still available - it could be the half unavailable was composed by the better offering. I'll return and revise if the beer improves.

Yelp
Mutation Brewing Company is a great place to go to with some friends. I went with some friends, and we were celebrating a birthday. They have a good bit of beers on tap, and they even have seltzers and frozen seltzers as well. They did have food when I went, but I am unsure if that's a permanent thing. I'm a fan of sour beer and seltzers, so I'm glad they were able to accommodate for me. Our group sat outside at this table that had these swings attached, so that was pretty cool. We ended up moving to a standstill table because more people joined our group. The brewery also has a lot of games to play, if that's something you're interested in. The brewery is also right off the exit too, so it's pretty easy to get to.

Yelp
The best place for a good beer and an amazing atmosphere! The people their are nothing but nice and have something going on every day! Highly recommend if you want a good place to be. Especially if you have a dog!
google avatar

Yelp
Parking is easy and plentiful. They have lots of TV's and sitting space. Their total line up of beers is a bit smaller compared to other breweries but a fuller array I find. There's a BBQ restaurant attached to the seating area so plenty to order from. Next to the BBQ is beer pong! Can't go wrong! Beer, BBQ, Football and Beer pong!!
google avatar

Yelp
So fun! Sit outside on the swings and enjoy good beer. We ordered food inside and loved the wings.

Yelp
This outstanding brewery just outside the Perimeter in Sandy Springs serves up delicious IPAs, Pale Ales and other styles in a fun, family-friendly setting that sets the standard for taprooms everywhere. On a recent visit, I enjoyed Mutation's amazing Liquid Hop Magma IPA (one of the best new beers I've had in quite a while) and their Be Kind and Rewind New Zealand Pale Ale. And if you'd like to pair your brews with some 'que, there's a smokehouse in the taproom, as well. Service was consistently great throughout my visit, and parking is conveniently located onsite (although I imagine this lot gets packed at peak times). One of the best breweries I've been to in metro Atlanta, Mutation is one I'll be coming back to whenever I have the opportunity.

Harry B.

Yelp
Really impressed with everything they have here. Came on a Thursday night to find a Family Feud-style game everyone could play and a comedy show (all for free). Drink and food prices weren't bad at all. Lots of games to play and plenty of space inside and out. Free parking, too. I like that I was able to order food from my phone with Apple Pay and having it delivered right to the table I scanned the menu from. Perfect use of technology. Service was extremely fast. This place is doing it right.

Yelp
We were the area for an Atlanta Braves game & decided to stop in to try this brewery. Was impressed with comfy ambiance, the great service, the wonderful selection of flavors of seltzers & the food was fabulous! It was all so good, we had to stop in again the following day for more! #Cheers #MutationBrewingCompany

Yelp
Not a fan. Asked for well done wings yet chicken skin and meat were not. Salad and fries were the only thing appetizing. Staff were very nice though. Love the decor just didn't catch the vibe at all here. Brisket lacked bbq sauce and sides were very bland. I'm glad I tried it out but will not be back.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Went her after checking out their "Mutate at Five" (I think I have the name correct) festival in Sandy Springs. A festival which is close to, but not at the brewery. But I'm rambling, the brewery has plenty of parking, which kinda surprised me given its location. The brewery itself is very spacious, and multiple drink sizes if you just want to sample. The variety of styles ensures there is something for everyone, they even had hard (frozen?) seltzers. There is a restaurant "affiliated" with them, but I didn't get to try any of the food. All in all, a pretty cool place, and I hope to hang out longer the next time I go back.

Tasha B.

Yelp
This was one of the best experiences I've had in Atlanta. The ambiance, customer service & drinks were top tier! I'd definitely recommend renting this space out for events.
google avatar

Kiara B.

Yelp
Cool interior space with a bunch of seating both inside and outside. The workers here are always helpful. I like their selection of beers and hard seltzers, and the food is pretty good too! I will say my friend got their wings once and did not like them but I enjoyed their tenders. Overall I'd recommend if you're looking for a chill spot to grab a pint. They always have a bunch of events going on with prizes (my friend and I won a gift card at trivia!) and they have plenty of (free!) parking.

Kathleen D.

Yelp
Excellent beer, friendly service, cool atmosphere. Highly recommend. Love the New Zealand Dounless IPA and the Blonde Pale Ale

Yelp
Very chill love the industrial modern feel. I got the berry pir sour and it's yummy. Zach was a peach to meet!! Will be back!

Yelp
The beer was great, but the food service very slow. We waited forty minutes for two burgers that were cold.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Great service. Great vibes! If you are a beer lover you will need to try this place out. It's a nice chill vibe and lots of beer options. If you aren't into beer they also have some yummy seltzer's! They have indoor and outdoor seating. Dogs are welcomed. Another fun thing to note they have beer pong tournaments! I'm unsure of how the schedule works but I believe the website has it up. Unfortunately, I would not recommend the food. It is simply okay. I was not left satisfied after eating the wings and mac n' cheese. There wasn't much flavor to them.

Stephen B.

Yelp
Beer was good, nothing special though. Food left a lot to be desired. Some interesting food combos that just didn't quite land with us. May come back for the beer another time, but not the food. Service was good as well. Place has potential, but we didn't understand all the rave reviews it got

Yelp
Mutation Brewing Company is an awesome addition to Sandy Springs! I came here on Saturday night with my friends and we spent part of the evening snacking, drinking, and playing games on a table with swings as seats (so much fun!) and then we moved inside when it started raining to continue the fun. It was not too crowded, which I appreciated. I loved the assortment of games that they had available, including Uno and other card games and a few board games. They had a wide variety of seltzers, beer, and a few frozen seltzers as well, and prices were very reasonable with a 5oz glass being only $3 so you could sample quite a few. They had some of your typical bar/pub foods, like chicken wings, fries, pretzels, and burgers. We ordered some things to share, including lemon pepper wings, fries, a giant pretzel, and loaded nachos with chicken. Overall, the food was salty but fairly good. The loaded nachos were the only dish we could not get into because they used beer cheese on the nachos and it just did not mesh well texture-wise. I will definitely come back to Mutation. They even have 50% off seltzers on Sunday!

Randy C.

Yelp
Good beer and very good food although the kitchen is run by a different company and you order food in a different area. Very loud atmosphere with polished concrete floors and a rustic, dirty, industrial feel to the place. It was not crowded but it needs something to mute the echoes of the loud ones there. Several people were having fun playing beer pong on a table. Come casual and expect a rustic and loud place.

Kandus J.

Yelp
This place is a new hidden gem! They are definitely up and coming! There's cool green bro lights that light up the inside of the building. There's also a speakeasy! There beers are damn good, especially the IPAs. They also have a wide variety of seltzers. Their outdoor patio is pretty swinging too! Loads of room plus swings around a table. This place is definitely an awesome brewery to checkout!

Yelp
The wives had a baby shower.... Somewhere. The dads came to Mutation. This place is great to hang out and bring the dog. It was pretty hot outside so people were able to bring their furry family inside. Beer is great and the bbq was also pretty good. Highly recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was very good. Great selection of their beers. I didn't try the food but the menu looked good for bar food. The decor is "industrial".

Yelp
This is my first time visiting Mutation Brewing but it won't be my last! The ESB is the best I have had in the Atlanta area; wonderful color, clarity, and balance. The New England IPA and the coffee stout are also excellent. The staff and the owner, Jack, are lovely. You can also order some terrific Republic Smokehouse BBQ! Love the brisket! Well done, Jack!
google avatar

Sabrina P.

Yelp
Solid place! Really enjoyed the DIPA and Sour. Found the Hazy IPA to be a bit earthy for my taste, but I'm unfamiliar with the (galactic??) hops. This is a bar with LOTS of activities- trivia on Wednesday & Thursdays, water pong, half off specials, etc. Definitely a lively place. The bartenders were great, however my biggest problem with this place was the food service. I was sitting at the bar, but had to get up to order from a separate counter. I get the casual food service, but at the bar?? Inconvenient, but not the end of the world. The food itself was disappointing. The brisket sandwich was way too fatty, and I know some prefer it that way, but the sandwich was really three pieces of half fat/half meat. No napkins were given and I was given bathroom style c-fold napkins when asked. An okay spot! Not upset I went, but not somewhere that's on my list to return.

Yelp
We've tried almost every brewery in the metro area, and this ranks among the best. The interior is cool and the beer is great. Traffic can be brutal, but that's the way the city is. Absolutely check them out

Yelp
Came in last week with a friend on Wednesday around 7. There was plenty of parking. Right in sandy springs off 285 so a good location! We got beers at the bar and sat at a booth. They didn't have a lot of options but the ones we got were good. We didn't realize they had trivia on Wednesday's at 7:30. It was SO loud. The guy was blasting the music. They serve bbq there which looked and smelled great. The vibe was kinda weird but the patio looked nice for a good day.

Yelp
They are paired up with Republic Smokehouse , M B first.... 10 - 12 beers on tap along with other choices, If you're a IPA person .... Welcome to your heaven. Republic Smokehouse, a good smoke flavor, We had wings and a combo plate and tacos, side need a little bit more seasoning

Yelp
When someone walks in, they look and help other people. Then they stare at you, help someone else, then ask as you are leaving if you need help.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The variety of beers is amazing. And the staff is fantastic. They are so inviting and make you feel like family. The food is great, top notch BBQ. They also have water pong, trivia and cornhole nights. Plus they have a secret room. That's amazing.
