"The news that the famed seafood market was closing in September was shocking, but not surprising on closer examination. Owner Harry Yoshimura told Eater Seattle that COVID-19 aftershocks and labor shortages were making it harder to operate, and recent shootings and other crime in the area made him nervous as well. And at 80, Yoshimura was thinking about retiring anyway. Still, Mutual Fish’s departure is a blow to anyone who needs a good piece of fish." - Harry Cheadle

"Mutual Fish, a Seattle seafood icon founded by Dick Yoshimura, is closing permanently on September 16. Known for its high standards and innovations like live shellfish tanks and flying fish in from California and Hawaii, it has been a go-to for Seattle chefs and home cooks alike. The closure is due to a combination of factors, including labor shortages, the impact of COVID-19, climate change, and concerns over nearby shootings and homelessness." - Harry Cheadle

Google
Always nice to support local businesses. I made a friend while I was there recently. He talked me out of crab for dinner. Halibut was great though. Fresh oysters were also a treat.

Sandy Timm

Google
Customer service was amazing. We were unsure how many pounds to buy, the server knew exactly what was recommended. He did all the cutting and fileting. The salmon was delicious.

Don't blame Mutual Fish Co for my lack of knife skills! Gorgeous fish, friendly expert team.

Google
This place was great!! After reading reviews, I came here to get oysters for my brother's birthday. He LOVES oysters. He travels quite a bit and has tried a good variety of oysters. I on the other hand am not a fan and had no idea what I was looking for. A young man (employee) came over and helped me out. He was VERY nice and helped me pick out a dozen. My brother told me those were probably the best oysters he has ever had! Wanted to know the details of where I got them (which I gladly shared). Thank you for helping make my brother's day! Now I know where to buy/recommend oysters for others. On a side note, I didn't buy any but was salivating looking at the tuna they had. This seems like a great spot to get seafood with very nice, helpful customer service. Very much recommend!

Google
Mutual Fish Company has been serving our Community for many, many years. The service has been consistant and genuine throughout my 5O+ years of patronage for myself, Grandparents, parents, family and friends. I love the spirit of warm, friendly, smiley faces when I walk through the doors, and the awesome display of delicious fish and seafood. The staff continue to be committed to taking time to give the best service to each customer. Thank you for providing the best fish and awesome service. #grateful

Google
Amazing experience today! I am trying to learn how to fillet a fish on my own so I stopped in to grab some whole fish to experiment with. Juanito helped me pick out the perfect fish for my planned dishes. He noticed I was watching him scale and gut my branzino's. He then showed and walked me through his process. He also gave me some pointers on filetting the fish at home along with another one of his colleagues. The level of customer service I received today and genuine help will make me a long time customer!!! Thank you!

Google
This is the place to go for fresh, quality seafood. They have an awesome variety, offering live shell fish, whole fish, fillets, etc. They even have live spot prawns when in season. They also have a small produce section as well as various seasonings and sauces. I've purchased seafood here several times, and I was thoroughly satisfied each time. The prices are what you would expect for top quality seafood.

DiAnne Thrush

Google
They are Using covid precautions. Clean place. Great knowledgeable staff. Good quality if fish. Nice selection of seafood. Can't comment on the prices as I thought they were bit high, but I live in San Diego regularly and are just appear for a month and a 1/2 I guess seafood is just cheaper down there...I enjoyed what I got and would go back inspite of the price. There is no price too high for good quality seafood and not getting sick

Yelp
Old school fish market with high quality products throughout. Live shellfish, fresh crab, sashimi, oysters and a small selection of groceries that work well with seafood. Been coming for literally decades and will continue to do so. They will ship for you as well so if you're looking to send a quintessentially Seattle gift that will be sure to impress it'll be a guaranteed hit. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Their seafood is so fresh. This is absolutely our favorite place to get seafood, scallops, black cod, halibut, salmon... all so fresh and tasty, perfect for cooking a nice seafood dinner.

Yelp
As a born and raised Floridian and lifelong fisherman, I take my seafood seriously. After moving to Seattle recently from the barren seafood desert known as the Midwest, one of my first priorities upon arriving in Seattle was finding a local fish shop where I could reliably find the best fishy fare the PNW has to offer. So on a recent Saturday, I embarked on a journey to Mutual Fish Co. While a wrong turn transformed what should have been a 15 minute drive into a 45 minute 'scenic' tour of heavily industrial south Seattle, I mercifully arrived at MFC and walked inside. I was immediately encouraged by the salty air inside which distinctly smells of fish but is not fishy - the hallmark of a good fish shop. The shop is no frills but clean, spacious, and well organized, equally accessible to the seafood savant and the seafood novice. After browsing the extensive selection of seafood - from beautiful salmon filets to fresh local oysters, I approached the counter and was immediately greeted by the helpful staff who provided advice on the latest catch and helped me pick out my order. I ultimately decided to purchase 2 live Dungeness crabs (2lbs each) and some beautiful dry scallops, which I cooked for a group of 4 for dinner later that night. Dinner was an absolute hit - the scallops were perfectly tender and flavorful after a quick sear in a little butter, and the meaty, sweety crabs - boiled in white wine and aromatics - delivered a genuinely decadent feast for us all. As a fanatic partisan of blue crabs from the East Coast, I have to say that this Dungeness delicacy shattered my previous belief that nothing can rival the divine goodness of a bushel of blues. Bottom line: Mutual Fish Co. certainly confirms Seattle's status as a veritable citadel of seafood and mecca of mollusks. If you're looking for the best seafood that Seattle has to offer, look no further! I'll be back soon for sure.

Yelp
My family would drive from Renton to shop here when I was a kid. It still delivers. Take the time to get here. You won't be disappointed.

Peter L.

Yelp
I haven't been here in ages, although to be fair, I just recently moved back to Seattle for the 4th time :). But Mutual Fish Co. has always been around as long as I have been in Seattle and for much longer. The place really does supply all of your seafood needs, and people know it so be prepared to wait as lines can easily form during these COVID days (tip: bring rain gear too as the line is unsheltered). Mutual Fish Co. really shines with their fish (sashimi quality!) and oysters - lots of live tanks where you can get live oysters and clams. The only dud I had here was the pre-cooked Dungeness crab, but then again, it's usually pretty bad anyway (much better to cook a live crab). As I am shucking oysters at home these days, looks like I will be back more often!

Stewart C.

Yelp
How do you beat this place when it comes to great fish in Seattle? A consistently impressive, impeccable option for any and all of your seafood needs. As someone from Seattle but currently living in DC, I request (more like demand) that my parents bring fish from here whenever they visit! (give me some credit, pacific salmon--especially mutual fish salmon doesnt compare to atlantic!!)

Neal P.

Yelp
The frozen stock alone is a reason to do all my seafood shopping here. I made two crab bisques from the frozen pieces I got and they were great. They also are one of the few places these days that have Diamond Kosher Salt. They also helped me avoid spending like $90 on the wrong kind of crab meat :)

Summer A.

Yelp
Excellent customer service every single time I go in... Product quality is consistently delectable!! I just love this place.

Juyoung L.

Yelp
Came here because I heard their marinated black cod was good. Ordered a filet and baked it at home and it was so soft and the marinate was amazing. My boyfriend loved it and said it tastes just like what they would sell at a sushi restaurant. Highly recommend.

Lisa C.

Yelp
The best seafood always. Had swordfish the other night, Mahi mahi and spotted shrimp tonight. Hands down the best seafood and the crew are a really nice group of guys. A little pricey but high quality and on a par with first class restaurants in the city.

Ron M.

Yelp
You shouldn't look beyond Mutual fish for your seafood and shellfish needs. They've been around for seven decades, so they know a thing or two about seafood! Staff is friendly and helpful with any questions you may have! If you want a quality and fresh product, plan a trip to Mutual Fish!

Rich T.

Yelp
Super fresh and reasonably priced. This is in rainier ave. the fresh spot prawns in season are delicious. So come and get them when they r around (like today!). The mussels are great and make sure to ask them what is fresh but the sushi grade hamachi and tuna is wonderful. And of course this is the place to get fresh wild salmon. So this is one of those places which is super high quality and reasonably priced. Come and get it :-)

Yelp
Mutual Fish has disappointed me for the last time. They advertise they'll "Ship Seafood" but it turns out they arbitrarily decide not to without even notifying the customer! I had ordered oysters to be shipped to my parents for a special occasion. I had given my credit card and all the shipping details and was told the seafood would ship the next day. I called my parents who were very excited. Then Mutual Fish called me back to say they "weren't sure but thought Fed Ex was maybe having some difficulties and advised not to send the oysters." I said I had good luck with Fed Ex in the past and was willing to take the risk. Mutual said "okay." The next day my parents called to say no seafood was delivered. I called Mutual who said they'd decided not to send it, in spite of my request to do so. This is the first time they were so deceptive but not the first time they've refused to ship seafood. I will not be returning to do any business with Mutual "untrustworthy and very fishy" Fish

Clint W.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some fish and Mutual is the way to go. They have a pretty good selection, including shellfish. On side, they have a selection of condiments to mix and match....including things like seaweed or kelp. Tons of selection and really fresh. A guy came in behind me and was looking at the Buffalo fish. Counterman told him....hey, that's been frozen before. Unsolicited. Gotta like that. In and out...quick like a bunny. I have a feeling some oysters on the BBQ is in my future for the summer. (Assuming Seattle has a summer.)

Jena E.

Yelp
Mutual Fish Company, in its humble location down the street from the Oberto's factory store in Beacon Hill, doesn't look like what it is - a purveyor of dock-fresh, overnighted seafood to the nicest restaurants in Seattle. Besides the smell of saltwater in the air, the fresh fishy corpses dug into their ice beds, the happy oysters bubbling in cold pots, I found - 1. There is a dedicated door-opener person 2. There is a box of dum-dum pops available for children 3. A big selection of dry goods and refrigerated goods for seafood dinner inspiration Not to mention the fact that my husband who works in marine wildlife, and has seen every criminal fish offense in the book, loves the place. If not for the 40-minute drive from my house to get here, I would come every week.

Annie J.

Yelp
I am so happy that Mutual Fish Co. is in my neighborhood! This place is amazing. As a new Seattleite, I am constantly in awe of the wide variety of fish available here. I'm partial to the halibut, but OMG the kasu black cod is freaking delicious. Don't believe me? Google NYT and Mutual Fish Co. They've been making this recipe for over sixty years...since the place opened! Also: this is a small thing but I love that they will always take the skin off of the fish for me. Makes cooking so much faster. I only wish they stayed open later. They close at 5:30 pm which is a bummer if you don't get out of work in time.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Mutual Fish is always is the best place for fresh seafood. If you are looking for fresh Oysters, Crab, Prawns, etc. I get my Dungeness crab here every time for my Crab cakes. Their prices are about the same that you would expect at Pike Place Market. Yes, pricey but worth it. I'll normally get the fresh 5# vacuum packed can, it can last in the fridge for up to 6 weeks unopened. They also carry hard to find items like Walleye, Halibut cheeks and massive Scallops!

Jolorene G.

Yelp
Picked up a couple pounds of smoked salmon for my relatives flying back to San Francisco. They carefully wrapped each piece individually and placed it in a cooler bag for me along with an ice pack. Just make sure if you are traveling that you throw out the ice pack before you get to TSA, they don't let those pass through. The smoked salmon is moist and flaky when you heat it up to eat. You can also eat it cold. There are different varieties of smoked salmon, the one I purchased was the hot smoked the other is a cold smoked which is more like a lox salmon.

Rachel H.

Yelp
Come one, come all, this is your one stop fish mecca. Mutual Fish Co is the real deal and has a completely fresh product, guys with great skills behind the counter, and is run by a nice family. Want a whole fresh Branzino prepared to put on your grill? Look no further.

S. Annette L.

Yelp
My mother has been bugging me forever for Buffalo fish. I don't know the first thing about fish and she loves all kinds - but at the moment it is all about Buffalo fish. She asked every neighbor until she was told about Mutual and then I was sent on a mission. I didn't know what to expect. The pace is fast, be sure to get in and grab a number, know how you want your fish prepared and then get ready for a treat - the prices are spot on. I was very pleased. Service is "friendly" but they are very busy and are clearly used to people who know fish a little better than me. I'm sure I'll be back to feed (literally) my mother's addiction.

Morgan R.

Yelp
Where the fish is always fresh - and has been for years. This is the place in the Rainier Valley to get high-quality fish. It is simply the best in the area. The staff can give you advice on how much to get, how to cook it, etc., but the real deal is the quality of the fish. Don't settle for second best when the best is available at the same price.

Jai S.

Yelp
First time customer, great customer service! Helped me get 4 dozen fresh varietal local oysters, a few pounds of clams, and some great advice on how to store and eat these delicious treats. These guys are the real deal.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Went to get sashimi grade tuna. It's way better than uwajimaya fishes. They had other good quality fishes as well. I will have to come back and try other varieties of fishes later visit. The staffs are well knowledgeable and gave me tips on how to prepare couple different ways.

Carol L.

Yelp
We love Mutual Fish. The freshest in the city. People are nice. Easy parking, great selection, fair price. The best in SeAttle.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I'm giggling over the reviews that complain about Mutual Fish smelling like (gasp!) fish. When I walk into a bakery, I expect it to smell like bread and cookies, and when I walk into a fish store I expect there will be a slight aroma of things like salmon and saltwater. I grew up on the coast; Mutual Fish smells vaguely like the dock, which incidentally is where the fish are. It's not like there are decaying tuna carcasses lying around. I have been to Mutual Fish many times, and I consistently find that they have a good selection of items, mostly products from the Northwest. Which makes sense to me, considering that we live in (drum roll, please) the Northwest. I usually am there for the oysters, which are very reasonably priced and typically include varietals such as Kushi, Kumamoto, and Hood Canal types. If you're an oyster fan, consider learning to shuck 'em yourself and pick up a dozen for $9 at Mutual instead of paying $2 per bivalve at a restaurant! Oysters aside, Mutual offers other shellfish (including packages of razor clam meat on occasion), fin fish, and octopus. Great place to pick up sushi fixings, and they also have a small Asian market.

Alvin V.

Yelp
Hands down to this place dammit! One of THEE best Seafood joints in the West Side! I'm usually not big with the whole seafood thing; cause I'm too damn picky. But Jesus H. Christ.... I was recommended to try the lobster, so I did. Then I was recommended to try the shrimp, so I did. I was then recommended to try the kasu black cod, so I did. Finally, I was recommended to stop cause I looked like I was going to blow up. For all you seafood fanatics; this place is a must! Bring your girlfriend, your mistress, your wife; hell bring them all at once; cause after the meal they'll forget about your cheating ass for a good moment cause they'll have food on their mind. Awwwwwwwwwwwwww.......

Tim O.

Yelp
Extremely knowledgeable staff that is very friendly - both on the phone and in person. Went in looking for some whole fish to grill and landed me some beautiful American Red Snapper. The employee (Juan?) came over and picked them out for me, explaining what to look for and why. Scaled and prepped them for free - something I most likely would have bungled myself. While I was waiting for my fishies to be ready, I met eye-to-eye with a live lobster being weighed on the scale. He was clearly not enjoying his last moments on Earth, but maybe he had some fun on the ride home. I pictured him hanging his head out the window, like a dog. One can dream and I'm sure he was delicious. The fish turned out great in part because I started with some great fish and didn't screw it up! You have to start with the best ingredients, becuase you can't really polish a turd, you know?

Rachel B.

Yelp
This is THE place to go for excellent fish. Even my friend who tests fish products for the FDA thinks so! What can I say. I am lucky to live in a neighborhood with an excellent fish market. The scallops here are the best in town. You can sometimes get fresh (not previously frozen) prawns as well. The fish is always fresh and good. They have live clams that are always in great condition. The crab is excellent 95% of the time and just like every where else 5% of the time. It can get VERY busy, especially around holidays. So, if you are going then, be up for a wait. And yes, it smells fishy. But, duh, they sell fish! So, if you want awesome seafood, come here! http://www.mutualfish.com/

MiChin L.

Yelp
This place is a sparkling gem in the Rainier 'hood. ALL of their stock makes Whole Foods look like 7-Eleven. I am terribly spoiled because it's a short distance from where I live. I got there one day and they had just closed. I was about to leave when one of the workers came out through the back door, ushered me in, got me what I wanted, took my money with a smile and sent me on my way. Now that's service. Decent prices too.

Heather H.

Yelp
Thanks to a generous selection of Yelpers that suggested me here, I came away with the best chosen cut of sashimi grade tuna. What impressed me most with this place is its cleanliness and the friendliness of the guys behind the counter. Anything you want to know about the fish or how to keep it from disposing itself before getting home, these guys are the ones to ask. I ended up with a half pound of tuna that was heaven, especially for the price $11.68. Considerably huge slices that were almost buttery and moist. I would have been paying close to $50.00 for that much sashimi at Umi's. I'm not knocking Umi's here, but if you want to sample a greater amount its best to do it at home. There was plenty of other fresh fish, oysters, mussels, and shrimp all kept in clean pens and not looking like it had been sitting there for a few days. They also sell house-made crabcakes, mochi, spices, sauces and everything else you could need on hand to make dinner with. It certainly makes throwing a fast dinner together easy and affordable.

Dawn R.

Yelp
The fish here is so good, it intimidates me as a cook...I literally question if I am worthy to prepare it. Once I needed shrimp for a recipe and I was not sold ordinary shrimp, oh no...what they had was amazingly fresh shrimp packed to the gills with glorious, buttery roe. I've never had such a treat before or since. Go in open to possibilities, and listen carefully to the recommendations of the staff, they will not steer you wrong. Additionally they also carry a wide variety of fish accessories, such as all kinds of crackers, sauces, and odd surprises. Fun and delicious.

odicar o.

Yelp
The Mutual Fish Co. been here for years. You got to try the Black Cod. You cook it just right. You won't be disappointed. Little pricey but we'll worth trying something different. Delish!

Quinn R.

Yelp
We've never cooked lobster before this recent valentines day seemed like as good a day as any. So off we went to Mutual Fish. Not too far from downtown and easy parking. Staff was ridiculously friendly and helpful. He picked out two lovely lobsters for us, same size as per request. Then the oysters, after I'd chosen my kumamotos I started eyeing some other brands (not brands but you know what I mean) he offered to open one up for me to give a try. THAT is service.

Chris L.

Yelp
Let the tourists go watch fish throwing at the PP market. Mutual Fish is where it's at. 1. Awesome product: the fish are nice and fresh and I hardly ever find a deadie when I buy shellfish. 2. Great prices, except on kusshi oysters (sigh). 3. Friendly and patient staff - I get zero flak for asking them to pan dress, or scale, or fillet but then cut each fillet into 2 thin fillets, or make steaks exactly 1.5" thick, or whatever other crazy thing I ask of them because I'm a pain. 4. All that other stuff they have that saves you a trip to the grocery store - nori, seasonings, sushi accessories, even oyster knives! As a bonus, they carry a lot of products from back home, from crab boil to seasoned fish fry to Cajun/Creole seasonings. 5. Clean store. Back to product, really, because you can't easily disguise the smell of fish going bad. But they keep the back and floors pretty clean given the amount of fish they stock and cut. 6. Oyster selection! Lots of good local oysters, often including tiny Olympias, which are good for the heathens among my friends who don't like oysters much. So go check them out. If you like seafood, no way you don't come out a regular.

Samantha L.

Yelp
While Mutual Fish might be in a slightly dodgier part of town the trip out there is definitely worth it. When you first walk in (and they aren't slammed) everyone at the counter welcomes you, which is a nice touch. Everything here was incredibly fresh, the prices seemed to be on point for the PNW as well. The guys at the counter are helpful too. Mutual Fish is actually the fish supplier for a lot of the nicer restaurants in town - so you know that the quality and care is right up there. Some of the highlights are: The Live Pink Spotted Shrimp, the homemade fish cakes, the sashimi grade tuna, and ohhhh that bucket filled with Black Cod Collars! (I mean, have you tried Maneki's Miso Braised Black Cod Collars?!?). Just don't accidentally park at the Cannibis Market next door (which we did). We were seriously stranged out by why everyone at the fish market was so sketchy/parked like a psychopath until we tried to go inside...

Charles D.

Yelp
i bought 3lbs. of muscles 6/15/19, they were all dead. caveat emptor when buying from there. it was a sad day for me, I never have bought from a store. I am use to getting them fresh from the sea my self. the experience has left me sour...

June N.

Yelp
So I have never actually been to the store itself, but the last restaurant I worked at had our seafood delivered from Mutual. Our driver Gene by the way is a great guy. Back to the seafood.... Fresh. That's what you get when you get anything from Mutual. Never had a bad batch. The way you can tell is if you stick your nose deep into the cavities of the fish and don't smell anything bad(duh). Look in the eyes too, if they're cloudy that means they've been out and are old. Also feel the skin, it should have that slimy stuff. If the skin is dried out, it's old too. You are paying a premium on fish and seafood due to the highly perisible nature of the product and you should always get and demand freshness! Seriously, if you buy some nice tuna steaks, my ritual anyways is to sear up a few but always leave one where i slice it up and dab with a lemon juice/garlic/cilantro/salt/pepper mixture and eat up sashimi style. If you are not confident enough to eat your fish raw, why not spend a few bucks more and get quality. If you really do want quality go to mutual fish co. They supply some of the better restaurants in the city. Get the same quality w/o the restaurant prices.

Faith C.

Yelp
This place is so legit and in my neighborhood. I am in heaven! The fish is spot on and super fresh. The price is good and it is a treat to come here once a month to stock up. I am normally not a catfish fan, but I must say that when I get it here, it taste amazing and makes me change my mind about that fish.

Jordan C.

Yelp
Hella Friendly. The folks behind the counter remind me of family. Always willing to offer recommendations and let you know what is the better deal. Don't be shy, they'll take care of you. Hella Fresh. Mutual Fish is monger to many of the top restaurants in this town --the same restaurants that put a premium on fresh and local. One of the reviewers here was crying about the fishy smell, questioning the freshness of the fish. Ever been charter fishing? Fish are being plucked out the ocean left and right and this is the same exact smell. The largest fish market in the world in Japan smells like this. I'd actually be wary of a fish market that didn't smell like the ocean. Hella Fish. In addition to the choice cuts, there's the occasional obscure cuts and they even have scraps (collars, belly, bits for stews). If you don't see it, ask. Mutual's my go-to for oysters. The Kushi and Kumamotos are not only the pricier of bivalves on offer, but IMO the more tastier and by far, the easiest to shuck. There's nothing quite like knocking back a clean undisturbed oyster sitting in its own liquor in one fell swoop -that in and of itself makes the premium worth it. Hella Hungry.

John C.

Yelp
Few places I know that you can get Sashimi grade tuna, yellow fin, and octopus. Great selection of fish and shellfish, they've got stuff in there I've never seen before. Kasu Black Cod is great, bake it in the oven and then broil the top uncovered for a crisp topping, serve with rice and salad...must be in heaven. They sometimes have recipes on their display by the door, which I like because you can try a different type of fish and know how to cook it. Should go earlier in the day, because the knowledgable staff sells the best first and then what is left over, its never bad, just not as great. Felt a bit intimidated the first time I went there, but the staff is friendly and very helpful.

Didem I.

Yelp
Wonderful fish market! We made ourselves a delicious seafood dinner with the fresh Aegean sea bream and the live Mediterranean mussels we got from here.

Jens J.

Yelp
This is the place to go for your seafood purchases! I'm sure in heaven they serve crab bisque in the Celestial Room.

Jason H.

Yelp
This is the best place for fresh fish in Seattle. We had some fantastic melt in the mouth troll caught king salmon from them. I'm not so much a fan of their special black cod recipe - I think it's cooks up really mushy. Extremely knowledgeable personnel and a fantastic selection of everything from catfish to king salmon the a number of good oysters as well. They box and ship as well if you need to take the fish with you!

Erica A.

Yelp
Erica Asahan on Mutual Fish Co.: I thought I would only find "ALIVE" cray fish, craw daddies or little lobster down south!!!? Well, to my suprise, they have plenty here! Yes, I did buy the whole thing, all 15 lbs of it and I pretty much ate the whole thing. I love this place!

Naurry K.

Yelp
A dreary Friday afternoon, I'm done with all meetings today, early even, so I feel inspired to cook tonight for myself and my baby. Driving by Mutual every day on my way to work, I think to myself today is the day to finally stop in and shop in the renowned fish store of the Rainier Valley. Well, imagine my disappointment. It's small, fishy and wet (don't wear your good shoes). Of course it smells of fish! But let's be honest, if it smells like fish then something's not going right. The prices could be better. The live crabs and lobsters were cool -- I felt like an 8 year-old boy visiting Sea World for the first time. Save yourself the trip (unless you live around there) and go to Whole Foods.

Yelp
After all the raves and "you must go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!es" - we went. It's okay. They do sell fish. Of course we were expecting at least some east coast seafood, since someone had mentioned that they'd seen blue crab here once, but it was all west coast stuff. And that's fine, of course, if you like that nasty spongy uriney Dungeness crab everyone out here seems to adore, and salmon and (snore) tilapia and all of the standard basics... but honestly, I think Uwajimaya has a MUCH better selection than Mutual Fish, and it doesn't smell "fishy." Folks - I hate to break it to you, but FRESH fish doesn't smell fishy. I used to go to the Fulton Street Fish Market in Manhattan, and it only smelled fishy on hot days, late in the morning, when the scraps in the garbage barrels started to turn. And then only if you were out by the barrels. Fresh fish smells clean and bracing and a lot like the sea. The fact that Mutual Fish smells fishy was very worrying and off-putting to me.

Yelp
The next building down on Rainier from Borracchini's Bakery is Mutual Fish. Visited for the first time recently. I read a review in The Stranger about saimin with a mention of Mutual Fish and their handmade fishcakes. I love fishcake, so I was pleased to hear of a local place that offers this fresh. The store has a good selection of fresh seafood including crabs, mussels and many varieties of fish. They also have a freezer full of goods and a refrigerated grocery section. The place is similar to Uwajimaya and has a Hawaiian flair to it. They even carry Hawaiian Sun drinks. I got a package of pre-packed fishcake ($3.25) along with the three fish combo fishcake ($8.99/lb.) which consists of cod, rockfish, crab and shrimp). Both which are prepared fried for your convenience. Used the fishcake on a number of dishes. They were very flavorful and really good with yakisoba or in a stir-fry. It has a different taste from the fishcakes I find in in Asian grocery stores which usually contain Alaskan pollock. This can be attributed to the ingredients used. Overall, I like Mutual. Will be back for the fishcakes and peruse the rest of the seafood selection here.

Yelp
I finally made it here at an early Saturday morning -- before all the mamas and aunts show up for their shopping! I was on a mission to get some halibut, rock fish and fish broth. And that's what I got! Their fish broth is $7.99/tub. It's great to make cioppino or seafood pasta. The gentleman who helped me was friendly and knowledgeable. I told him I've been wanting to make cioppino to rival my step dad's. He gave me some pointers and which seafood would be best to go into it. Ha!! All and all I like Mutual Fish for their service, fresh seafood and tasty broth. As I drove away, I was planning my next trip there for some oysters and crab.
