"Elaborate tableside service, cocktail programs that could have been developed by Bill Nye, restaurant build-outs that cost as much as that diamond Rose threw into the ocean in Titanic - there are so many things going on at some restaurants that it can be easy to forget that the main focus should be what’s actually on the menu. My Cuban Spot, a takeout window in Gowanus, is a reminder that if a place serves excellent food, the rest of that stuff doesn’t really matter. The options here mostly consist of rice bowls topped with beans and various meats and spices, plus Cuban sandwiches, all of which come on heavily-buttered, slightly-charred, pressed bread. The Cubano is made with slow-roasted pork that’s super rich, and every ingredient balances out to make this one of our favorite sandwiches in Brooklyn. But if you have any plans in the immediate future beyond watching Planet Earth slumped on your couch with your hand on your stomach, you can opt for a bowl instead without being disappointed - the “Oink Oink Babe” has the same juicy, rich, salty pork, but in a somewhat lighter format topped with a fantastic fried sweet plantain. Space-wise, this spot is just a window on the sidewalk. So after ordering, you can bring your food to one of two small tables or take it to-go. Which is fine, because you could eat these Cuban sandwiches and rice bowls in the aisle of a commuter train at 5pm on a summer Friday and you’d still enjoy them. Although you’d probably make the people around you pretty jealous. Nothing on the menu here costs more than $12, and even though the portions are large, you shouldn’t overlook sides like crispy empanadas filled with guava and cheese. Basically, you’re going to get some very good food at My Cuban Spot no matter what you order. Sometimes, that’s really all you need. Food Rundown Empanadas These flaky empanadas cost less than a small coffee from an Australian cafe, and are filled with things like spiced ground beef, nutella, or guava and cheese. That last one is our favorite, and we’d happily eat it as either a starter or dessert. The Cubano As long as you’re OK with heading straight to your couch after eating, this is one of the best sandwiches in Brooklyn. The buttery Cuban bread is pressed super thin and the sandwich is packed with a bunch of different intense flavors that somehow don’t overwhelm each other. Pan Con Bistec This sandwich is a little lighter than the Cubano, which is kind of amazing considering it has layers of rich and salty New York strip steak, caramelized onions, and mini potato sticks. If you have to choose, get the Cubano, but the better option is getting both and splitting with someone. Cuban Burger Calling this a burger might be a stretch, but whatever you call this messy handheld meat sandwich, it’s damn good. The beef and pork patty has a bunch of spices and sweet flavors from the secret sauce, and there’s a fried egg on top, because that’s never a bad idea. Oink Oink Babe We don’t understand how dreams work, but we’re confident that the bites of this rice bowl that include both slow-cooked pork and fried sweet plantains are what they’re made of. Picadillo The flavors here are more subtle than the flavors in the pork rice bowl, but the ground beef, which is cooked for hours with tomatoes and olives, is sweet, salty, and packed with spices." - Matt Tervooren

I had some Cuban food in Miami early this month. So when I saw My Cuban Spot on the map this morning, I got excited to try while keeping my expectations low just in case. But I was totally surprised! The Cuban sandwich was absolutely delicious especially the crust of the bread! I also loved the Guava cheese empanada that was not too sweet. I’m going back there to try other sandwiches for sure!

Fast fast fast , I was starving and didn’t take a picture of my food but I wish I did because it had to be the best Cuban food I’ve ever had. The location is a hole in the wall but it is worth every single penny it is actually genius how efficient they are in that small workspace. Clever brilliant excellent food I live about a 30 minute drive and was in the area but I would definitely drive to get food from here.

Loved the food. One of the best Cubans I have had in New York. Food is made to order and comes out fast. Workers are friendly. This is not a large place. Outside seating only. They have seating for 4 and 2 benches outside the restaurant.

Amazing food, you’re gonna be full from the boss sandwich (comes with plantain chips). Good value. FYI They don’t take American Express, but all other credit/debit cards should be fine. They do have limited outdoor seating (bar stools) but my friends and I ate our food at a nearby park.

Not sure what a traditional Cuban sandwich is supposed taste like but the fantasy I had in my head became a reality at first bit. If your looking for 100% delicious Cuban sandwich definitely check this spot out. Also the cafecito was wonderful, was like NOS of coffee and flavor, OG Fast and Furious style. Highly recommend! P.S. Also love that they were rocking out to some Underoath

Hands/fins down the best Cuban sandwich I’ve had in NYC, and maybe ever. The to go bag said “the boss” idk if that’s different from regular Cuban, but it was INCREDIBLE. The beef empanadas were also delicious, but I completely forgot about them when I realized how mouthwatering-ly amazing the Cuban was. I will be returning tomorrow and the day after that and again and again. GO HERE IMMEDIATELY.

Hands down this truly is the best cuban spot ever in NYC!!! A close friend of ours posted about this cuban spot so today we wanted to try and see if his hype was real. Simply Amazing! We ordered the cuban sandwiches, beef empanadas (OMG!!!), guava and cheese empanadas and chicken and pork bowls. And we also bought for our friends... thanks to my friend who posted and tagged this spot. I am soo happy to eat such great food and not have to travel to Miami just to satisfy my cravings!! Service and food was just amazing!!! Oh and the cuban coffee... Thank you for making such great food for our lunch and dinner. i wish you guys the best and continue to do so amazingly well!!!

Go nuts - order anything that sounds good because it is! We got into Brooklyn just in time to get dinner: beef empanadas, yuca fries, pork rice bowl and the Frita (Cuban burger). Flavors are on point and that burger was something special! Café con leches were legit - definitely don’t miss out on this place. Seating is VERY limited. Takeaway is your best plan unless you catch this on a lull like we did: there are 2 bar-height, narrow tables with 2 stools each and no space for extras to stand. Plan to pick up and go. Sadly, they haven’t been able to get their meat supply for chicharrón so we missed out on that one - we will be back to try again when we visit NYC again.
