20 Restaurants Showcasing the Eastside’s Multicultural Dining Scene

"The namesake dish at Bu Er Jia, “Chinese Sauerkraut Fish” is spicy, sour, brothy, and more. Farm-raised Idaho tilapia and largemouth bass are plucked from a tank and cooked in a tangy broth, resulting in a multi-stage meal: first ladle tender fish slices over the accompanying rice, then move onto slurping the leftover broth. Smaller plates and desserts are also available to supplement the dish. Bu Er Jia is open for on-site and takeout dining." - Brett Bankson, Eater Staff

Google
Saukraut fish may sound weird, but it is a stupendous invention and Nai Brother does it excellently. It has a wide variety of soup and fish options and all are really great. Mala spiciness with a combination of veggies, noodles, tofu, etc. Your tongue may be numb but you won’t regret it. There are also good non-soup options and they also have whole fish dishes that we’re looking forward to trying. Love this place.

Google
Their soups are spicy and delicious. They have non-spicy options as well. Also, portions are big at a very fair price. I totally recommend it here if you want to try too notch food that is comforting. The atmosphere is very casual, service is super fast and the establishment is really clean.

Google
Nai Brother delivers big, bold flavors with its signature sauerkraut fish! The fish is smothered in a tangy, savory sauerkraut sauce that packs a punch. Portion sizes are massive too. The menu has other tasty options but the fish dish steals the show. Simple decor but efficient service. A unique, delicious dish worth trying!

Google
LOVEEE this place, soup is delicious & I feel like is very underrated. More people need to come here, it’s a little hidden. It’s become now one of my favorite spots.

Google
BBQ pork skewer and Maoxuewang are my favorite! Fish is delicious, especially tomato flavor and tofu flavor. Chicken feet tastes so-so.

Google
This is one of my favorite Chinese food restaurants. It's a "build your own hotpot " place where u pay one flat rate by weight. The ingredients are fresh, delicious and unusual (frog legs?). You can get as a hot pot soup or as a noodle dish (i prefer the noodles). Prepared fresh for you, quickly, at a great value. If u like legit, cultural food experiences in a food court setting, this is your spot. Local small business with friendly owner. Weird name but food is on point

Google
We ordered 2 single meal, one is signature sauerkraut fish and the other is spicy mala fish. Both tastes really good to me! I’ll recommend the first one if you only order one flavor!

Google
Super flavor fish soup! I usually enjoy fish that is baked or fried but was impressed with the flavor of this dish. Fantastic take out service that was quick and delivered in a nice bag. Overall quality meal and service. Would recommend to anyone.

Yelp
I was craving something spicy for tonight's dinner, and we came across Nai Brother Chinese Sauerkraut Fish in our search. Intrigued by the delicious pictures, we hopped in our car to give it a try. We arrived around 8:30pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy luckily. We got seated right away and placed our order. I got the small Signature Sauerkraut Basa Fish for ~$18, which came with a bowl of rice. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion size when the food came out. The sauerkraut fish bowl was as big as my face! There was a good amount of fish to soup and vegetable ratio. The broth had a kick of flavor, and I liked how you could make each bite spicier by adding a pepper from the soup to your bite. The rice was fluffy, and I appreciated the fact that it was complimentary Overall, I was very impressed by the food - my stomach is happily full! I will definitely come back soon.

Yelp
overall: 5/5 food: 5/5 service: 5/5 ambiance: 5/5 i may be biased because i love sauerkraut fish, but this is the BEST spot. delicious broths, fresh fish, generous toppings. i got the signature sauerkraut fish broth- i forget which fish i chose to have in my bowl, but i do believe that there were 3 options to choose from. it was so good. each bowl came with a complimentary bowl of rice, and the portions were huge! i was able to finish my bowl clean- but realistically one bowl can feed two people. clean establishment, attentive staff, good food. i recommend coming here! the staff speak mandarin and english :).

Yelp
Interesting concept and thought it was pretty good. Smaller restaurant, and the only thing I wish was that if they served beer. Nai Brother Chinese Sauerkraut Fish is located in a strip mall next to a pretty popular noodle restaurant. There wasn't any wait when we came and got seated immediately. Ambiance is pretty much what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. We ordered a few items - pig ears, fried pork, sauerkraut fish, and tomato fish. Can't really go wrong with pig ears. The fried pork was surprisingly good. Not exactly sure why but definitely something I would recommend. The sauerkraut fish bowl and broth was okay. Not really my thing but everyone else liked it. It was a little sour and definitely had a nice spicy kick to it. My choice is the tomato based fish soup. It was a little sweet and had a little more thickness to it. It wasn't spicy but just felt good to me on a colder day.

Yelp
Came hear for lunch. Not very familiar with this type of food. Ordered the mushroom tofu soup with Snakehead fish I asked for fish without bones. This dish was light with lots vegetables-cabbage, enoki mushrooms and white firm mushrooms(don't know what type), and bean sprouts, there was goji berries and tofu/bean curd like noodles . Came with side order rice. Service was slow, was not greeted right away, but food came quickly. Host was not friendly. Big portions. I took home leftovers. I think this is popular chain because they had branded chopsticks, bags, and to go container. May date order the chicken with ramen noodles. Big portion, but did not particularly excited about his dish. Sauce mixed with everything. Would try again and try the signature dish.

Yelp
Was disappointed wt their serving. It came in a big enormous bowl only fill with Napa veggie and limited fish slice to push up the volume . Not enough soup. But the grill pork is delious. Not going back.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed after entering the restaurant was how nice and clean the place looked. I was craving for some soup and after seeing their menu I thought to myself, "this should be good". I asked the nice young waiter what kind of fishes they had on the menu. I decided to order their Tomato Sunshine soup with Basa fish... and it was delicious. For the most part, I tasted the majority of my sips the rich tomato base broth and the fish. However, the veggies that came with it were, in my opinion, slightly bland. As for the texture and taste of the Basa fish was soft and not so strong of a taste, similar to that of a cod which I love. Regardless, since I'm a big tomato fan and that broth gave me that perfect satisfaction, I can't complain. Really good spot if you want something nice, warm and soothing for your soul, come on by here. I definitely plan to come back here again soon. Enjoy!

Yelp
Nai Brother Chinese Sauerkraut Fish is tucked in a strip mall near crossroads mall. Eating here was my first experience with this type of cuisine and I thought it was great. I ordered my food for pickup and must say the service as far as to go packaging is some of the best I've seen. I went with the Signature Sauerkraut Fish (Snakehead Fish) which was bursting with flavor, showcasing the restaurant's expertise. It was also a filling and a good value for the money. If you are in the area, you should try Nai Brother Chinese Sauerkraut Fish which offers both quality and value in every bite. For me this was a 4.5 star restaurant but would round it up to 5 stars for the great takeout experience.

Yelp
We still come here regularly for take-out. They have released some new entrees so we tried one: dry pot with beef. It was very tasty and we will order it again. Their service is always friendly and timely, which we appreciate a lot.

Yelp
Tomato broth was my favorite. We also tried the signature and the mushroom tofu, but those were just okay. The Chinese donut dipped in tomato broth was amazing. Tried the seasoned tofu appetizer and the fried pork belly, those were just okay.

Yelp
Amazing little shop in a busy strip mall across crossroads mall. Lots of small parties dining in as well as a number of take out orders. The staff here move quick so there wasn't too much of a wait upon arrival to getting the food. For a party of 3, we opted to get 1 small and 1 large which was more than enough food. Small tomato soup: sweet yet savory tomato flavor that warms your soul on a cold winter day. It has tons of goodies (cabbage, fish, bean sprout, tofu skin, fish, etc) and a handful of tomato pieces. All swimming in a delicious soup. Large traditional sauerkraut soup: tangy and delicious. It says 3 spicy levels, but it's really like a 1 spicy. (This is coming from someone who cannot handle spice) I brought milk just in case but didn't need. The soup also has tons of goodies, huge chunks of fish, and also spices floating around. Overall delicious spot to warm your soul on a cold winter day, or any day you're craving soup. It's a quality place that's very affordable and generous. I had a enough leftovers for a full lunch the day after and it was just as good as when we got it.

Yelp
Really? What is German fermented cabbage doing in a Chinese dish. But it isn't. Suan Cai Yu is sour vegetable fish. And it is absolutely delicious. We were there two days in a row!! First day, my wife and I shared a small Sunshine Tomato Soup with Grass Carp. She was skeptical, but I've had versions of this bright tomato-based soup in China and it was everything I was expecting and better! My wife's eyes grew wide with the first sip, and I knew we had a winner here. The meat of the grass carp is best described as "crispy". I don't know an English word for it, but the texture went well with this soup. Next time though, I think the Basa fish might work better as that has a softer bite. The next day, we were back and had the standard Signature soup with Basa, and the Snake Head (Black Fish) with mushroom and tofu. The Signature soup was spicy, and sour, and a little 'ma' with Szechuan peppercorns. Not over the top, but perfectly balanced. The mushroom tofu, on the other hand, was not spicy, but umami through the roof! Portions were generous with a bowl if perfectly steamed rice and lots of fish. With 8 different soups, and 3 different types of fish, now, that is 24 different variations to try?? Despite being there 2 days in a row, I can't wait for our next meal there.

Yelp
Delicious! Sauerkraut fish is completely new to me, so I went with the signature soup with snakehead fish (also never had that kind of fish) and my partner got the tofu and mushroom soup with carp. I loved both, but I think the signature was a perfect choice for me. It was spicy and flavorful, and the fish was soft. Each came with a generous portion of fresh white rice too. While I would definitely have this soup any day of the year, I can imagine it being perfect in the winter and I will definitely come back to try other soups The service was good and fast. It wasn't too busy for a Monday evening but if we came during a weekend, I could imagine the place being super packed since it's small.

Yelp
Delicious new sauerkraut fish location, still in soft opening! (It's been soft open for awhile, apparently.) The prices are pretty good. We ordered a large classic sauerkraut fish with basa fish, added on potato noodles, mushrooms, and wosun. Plus a chicken feet appetizer. The dish came with two bowls of rice. There are actually a number of vegetables already included in the dish, including tofu skin, bean sprouts, and some napa cabbage. I think the extras were kind of not worth the cost because there wasn't much of them in there, but I also don't know that they're necessary to order. Very tasty. Spicy and sour. The chicken feet were a cold dish, not spicy, and great for soothing the mouth between bites of the actual entree. They have so many varieties of soups/broths and you can order individual sizes! I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
So yummy!!! I am obsessed with sauerkraut fish and their signature is sooo delicious. BUT A SHOCKER, the mushroom/non spicy one also hits the spot so hard, I might prefer it over the spicy ones. I love that the smaller ones come with a bowl of rice and the bigger one comes with 2 bowls! TBH the smaller size could be shareable because there is actually a lot of fish. I would come back for their tofu and mushroom soup and add some noodles next time! The restaurant is a tad small so make sure you put your name on the list early!

Yelp
The takeout packaging was excellent and secure. The taste was acceptable, but the pickled cabbage weren't as sour as I expected. However, considering the price, it's quite reasonable

Yelp
I came here by myself last weekend and I got a small order of the addicting mala fish. The taste and spice were super spot on and addicting, as the name suggests. The portion can easily fill two people. The soup came with cabbage, tofu skins, and wide glass noodles, all of which complement the fish very well. I had enough soup leftover to take home! The space is pretty small and I got there a little bit before a line started forming so I was lucky. The servers were also friendly and answered any questions generously. Also the pricing was not bad which makes it another plus! Definitely coming back to try more flavors!

Yelp
This place is really good. Not as spicy as you would think. Fish tastes fresh and so tender. The toppings are Great as they soak up the delicious broth. Would definitely come here again.

Yelp
Service was good, food was fresh and tasted great! Yes it was spicy - just the way I like it!

Yelp
Ooo, saw this new sauerkraut fish place and wanted to try it out. I got takeout for the Signature Sauerkraut Fish with mushroom and duckblood and I loved it. Extremely savory and and numbming and fresh. It was also a very generous portion and my tummy was extremely satisfied after I finished the meal. It's a pretty small restaurant, not a lot of seating area, certainly not great for a large group, but the food is top notch. Parking in the plaza, pretty easy.

Yelp
We decided to try this place on a whim since we were at crossroads on New Years Day and the place we planned on going to was closed! Located sort of across the street from crossroads. Adjacent parking lot with plenty if parking! Relatively small restaurant that had maybe 3 other groups when we came it around 2.30p. Options included multiple soup bases, fish, and beef. They also had lunch specials that included an appetizer and drink. Decided to just order off the regular menu and my SO and i each got a small bowl. This comes with rice and you can also get additional toppings for an additional price. Each bowl comes with the fish, napa, sprouts, and bean curd skin. You also get a bowl of rice! I added tofu while my SO added spam and enoki to his mala bowl. Both broths were good but I personally liked the mala broth a smidge more. The small size was pretty good size and was enough for me to have leftovers to take home. Overall it was solid and a good choice if you are loosing for a spicy fish pot in the area! Service was friendly and fast as well and they boxed my leftovers up for me and even wrapped the soup bowl with plastic to avoid spills!

Brett M.

Yelp
Server was very fast, attentive, the food was great and portions were very generous for the price. Each broth came with rice but if you're not a heavy eater, I recommend bringing a group of 4 and trying two different broths. That can be divided and give you the freedom to try a few different types. Will return!

Yelp
Great flavor! Tried three options and the tasty pork strips. Will definitely come again:)

Yelp
This is an update. I still have no issue at all with their food. The music got a lot better recently. That made the dining experience significantly better
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Unique! Flavorful! Service was good. Can't say much about the dining experience as it was mediocre being just in a strip mall but the food was outstanding! Will definitely return!!

Yelp
Very unique style of Chinese food. You have to like the fish and willing to eat in a soup style. But once you get over those, you will find their food taste fresh. You could pick different varieties of side dishes to go along with the dish and have them all cook together. This is one of the lunch dating places for me as my son is picky. They have limited options.
