The Best Restaurants in Altadena, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Though surrounded by flames in January, Nancy’s Greek Cafe miraculously survived the Eaton Fire. For 32 years, owner Shawn Shakhmalian’s restaurant has served traditional Greek hits, including souvlaki, moussaka, kebabs, stuffed grape leaves, flaky spanakopita baked with layers of spinach, onion, feta, and phyllo dough. Hummus and tabbouleh are always served, as is the lemony soup avgolemono." - Mona Holmes

Google
delicious food, the chicken kebabs had a nice citrus taste that blended wonderfully with the entire dish. Tried this hidden gem while working the wildfires in the area, would definitely try again if I had the chance. Please support local business! the owner is also very kind and sweet. he hand delivered everything and even chatted with us during the wait for food (all made fresh so you may have to wait a while)

Summer L.

Google
Excellent food and service. So glad they were open! Enjoyed fresh hummus, Greek chicken soup, and a gyro. Can't wait to come back the next time we visit Altadena!

Lyle F.

Google
Shawn and company made us feel like part of the family. Nancy, most of their employees and their clientele lost their homes in the Eaton fire earlier this year. The bakery has shut down temporarily because of the circumstances. Help them get back on their feet and support local business! Altadena Strong! Thanks for the lovely meal and kindness. See you again soon!

Sylvana J.

Google
Service is great! Owner is very sweet and kind! The food is delicious and very fresh! Get the hummus!

Jeffrey P.

Google
We split a Souvlaki chicken and two spanakopita. They were delicious. They deserve more diners - so many of their Altadena customers were burned out.

Zoe L.

Google
This place is a wonderful gem! The food is delicious and the service really makes you feel like family. Proud to support this Altadena restaurant. Give this place a try! You won’t regret it.

Google
The food is amazing here!! It is made here fresh everyday. Also I have to say, the hummus was so creamy and smooth and delicious!!

Kari V.

Google
The food was delicious. They clearly are short servers, and service was a bit uneven, but it was friendly and helpful. Nice to see an Altadena restaurant thriving. It was very busy.

Johanna T.

Yelp
The food is fabulous! Authentic Greek food that is made to order. So fresh, so tasty! Family owned - warm & welcoming. Service was friendly but a little slow BUT worth the wait! Support our Altadena businesses.

Yelp
Working in the area helping fire victims. I stumbled upon this place. Mariam was.our waitress and she was amazing. Her service was what you would find in high end restaurants. Just a lovely person. The ambiance was dazzling. Soo Greek! The food was the best Greek food I've eaten in years. Everything was fresh and seasoned appropriately. Everything was delicious. We are such foodies. I drove 2 hours here for work. But will be coming back just for the food and the service.

Yelp
We found this deep in the Yelp results and tried it for the first time tonight. The food was incredible, even better than I expected, and the service even better. When we arrived, it was a little hard to find in the dark, but I am so glad that we did! The owner was very friendly and the server was super helpful. Excellent. Small town restaurant feel, and the food was so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. We had a perfect evening. We will be back!

Yelp
I stumbled upon Nancy's Greek Cafe purely by kismet. My family and I were out on Saturday during the Pasadena Greek Festival, and I wasn't sure the restaurant would even be open. Luckily, it was, and we were welcomed by the owner, Shawn. From that moment forward, the entire experience felt special. Shawn shared heartfelt stories about the journey of keeping the restaurant open, not only for himself but for the families of his staff. As an owner-operator, he does the work of many people, and it is clear the whole team works together like a family to serve the community of Altadena and Pasadena. That sense of love and unity carries through every detail. I chose Nancy's Greek Cafe in part because Nancy was my partner's late mother's name, and I like to embrace moments when her presence seems to appear in my life. Finding the restaurant that day felt meant to be, and it truly lived up to that sense of serendipity. The food was excellent. Fresh, flavorful, clean, and not greasy or processed. It tasted like being welcomed into someone's Greek home, where every dish is made with care. From the first bite, I knew this place deserved to be added to our list of Altadena favorites. The restaurant itself is charming. From the outside, you see the classic Greek blue and white facade, and inside you are welcomed by beautiful paintings of Greek gods. Athena, Poseidon, Artemis, and of course Dionysus set the tone for a place where you can indulge and enjoy the very best of Greek cuisine. I am so grateful for the food, the experience, and the warmth we felt at Nancy's Greek Cafe. This is a place I cannot wait to return to again and again.

Yelp
The restaurant is located next door to the burnt down Bunny Museum. We arrived after walking from the Christmas Lane tree ceremony. I was surprised that the restaurant was empty for dinner but the owner was stating since the street was closed off nobody could get through in their cars. I ordered the Gyro sandwich and the lentil soup. The sandwich was big and it was more than enough food to fill me up. My other half stated the lentil soup was probably one of the best she has ever tasted. While we waited for our food the restaurant started getting packed with customers.

Yelp
My husband and I came by for lunch and we were so impressed by the quality of the food here. This place really hits the spot and transported us back to the amazing food experience we had in Greece! We felt like our Greek uncle served us food straight from his own kitchen. Amazing! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
Amazing Greek food! My husband and I stop by for lunch here whenever we are back in Altadena. The food is so good and fresh. I am a vegan and the options are great - I really like the veggie wrap, dolmas, and babaganouj. The ingredients are super fresh. My husband ordered the salmon and he similarly said it was excellent. I highly recommend this awesome hidden gem!
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
The place was empty when we came for dinner. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that the food was not heavy, tasted fresh and really exceeded my expectations overall. It definitely left us wanting to try more. Once I took a bite of the spanakopita, I knew this place was special.

K L.

Yelp
Best Greek food I've had in awhile. If you're looking for a nice sit down place to enjoy some fresh homemade Greek food (and are not in a rush), come to Nancy's. Don't forget to get the tabouli and babaganoush, so amazing. And the staff were so nice!
google avatar

Juliette P.

Yelp
I can truly say this is the best Greek food I've had in LA. Nancy's Greek Cake is an absolute gem. We had the tabouli, humus, rack of lamb, grilled salmon, and the roasted lamb special. Sounds like a feast? Well, it was! Absolutely delicious food. And to top it off the service is excellent. The owner is warm and inviting and really makes you feel welcome and at home. We will be back.

Mary Jane F.

Yelp
My husband ordered take out tonight. Greek Salad was fresh and good. Lula and gyro ... disgusting... we couldn't eat it. No flavor and it's like eating rubber. The hummus with bread don't order it. The bread is hard and the hummus just not good. Will never order again.
google avatar

Paula J.

Yelp
Since the Eaton Fire, I've tried to patronize Altadena businesses. Today a friend and I had lunch at Nancy's and it was like finding out you suddenly have a Greek relative who loves to cook for you. My veggie wrap was huge and delicious and my friend's lamb entree looked very good. Everything is made to order so don't expect your food to arrive instantly, but it's worth the wait. Nancy's is located in a little shopping center with loads of free parking. It's a charming spot!

Juliana J.

Yelp
The food is delicious, the service is so much like home and the ambiance is like being on vacation at a great little place in Greece.. I loved it!
google avatar

Margaret ..

Yelp
We had a great dinner as usual. The atmosphere is quiet so you can have a real conversation. The food is great and well priced. Catering is a good option for this food.
google avatar

senora T.

Yelp
Tried to go there for lunch. It indicated that the open hours were updated 2 weeks ago. But when I got there, the place was closed ... due to "no water." Owner - please put in your outgoing message that you are currently closed due to ...
google avatar

Yelp
Nice service, Great food, nice intimate restaurant for a quick date night for two. And it's also a great way to support Altadena
google avatar

Yelp
For a business that survived one of the deadliest fire related disasters in California and beyond, the owner of this business has worked tirelessly to stay afloat, waiting for the water to be turned back on, galvanizing other business owners to band together. I just ordered the Bavarian creme white wedding cake stuffed with fresh raspberries for my husband's 70th birthday and our guests were blown over by the presentation of the cake but especially the quality inside; "not too sweet.... I could actually eat the icing which I normally scrape off because it's way too sweet." The owner of this sweet restaurant also makes incredible Greek Food too! I have been ordering cakes from this place for YEARS and I think they make the BEST CAKES in ALL of Los Angeles.....and I have had Susie Cakes too!

Yelp
So glad they were barely spared by the fires but they continue to suffer from so many neighborhood customers moving away. My mother, sister, brother in law and I feasted there today. The food was expertly seasoned and made to order so be very patient. Look around at the colorful wall murals. The place is clean and cozy. I haven't had such flavorful moussaka in a while and I stole a bit of my mother's lamb chops which were tender and juicy. The lemony potatoes were the best I've had in years. Warm pita bread. Crisp and crunchy salad with creamy feta. No matter how good the entrees are, do save some room for aromatic Greek coffee and dessert bars. The four of us ordered one of each kind: lemon, pecan, raspberry walnut, and pistacio/cinnamon baklava and couldn't stop raving about the warm and fragrant buttery goodies. It was our first time but we promised ourselves to go back soon. https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuild-nancys-bakey-and-greek-cafe?qid=97112350f985ebec4d13383944fc9c67

Yelp
The Altadena, CA fire created a region eerily similar to Hiroshima after the bomb. Just nothing as far as the eye can see. A small number of homes and businesses were spared, for no apparent reason. They are very very lucky. Nancy's has been me and my friends go-to place for a reliably fantastic, affordable dinner. It's understated, family run, and will deliver the exact same quality of your favorite dish every single time. Soon, like the 2nd time you're there, you won't need a menu because you've been dreaming about that dish at Nancy's. It's my kinda joint. So after the fire, we called Nancy's and they told us they were spared, but are surrounded by a sea of ashes and they don't know that they will ever open for a very long time, if ever. There's no population to support it! I was really sad, both for them and for me. But this Saturday night, on a whim, we called to see if anyone would answer and they were open! We were the very first customers since the fire. A point of great pride for me. What better way to thank and honor this humble, deserving place then to just get out and eat there, and tell the world -- THEY'RE OPEN! Despite the devastation around them. The food, friendly service, and crew didn't miss a beat. I had my same chicken kabobs w/potatoes, side salad, order of humus. It was juicy and indescribably delicious -- like it is every single time. So I'm here to tell whoever might stumble across this that NANCY'S IS OPEN for business! Please, if you are able, patronize this wonderful family business. And when you do, and you're at the table and hear a distant bell twinkle, know that it's an angel getting his wings, and thanking you. And here's their GO FUND ME page for recovery: https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuild-nancys-bakey-and-greek-cafe?qid=97112350f985ebec4d13383944fc9c67 (p.s. the reviewer, "Jamila P.," who warned they were rude and other bad stuff went somewhere else, or they're just wankers.)

Yelp
Charming. Authentic Greek food and Retsina. Very friendly and comfortable Happy to support as recovering from fires

Gayleen W.

Yelp
We heard about this place on Nextdoor and tried it tonite. We met the owner and heard about their challenges since the fires. The service was excellent and the food was terrific and affordable. Very authentic and tasty. We had the lentil soup, moussaka, lamb kebab entree and roasted veges. The wine was good too. Please come try them and you won't be disappointed!

Ingelise P.

Yelp
Loved the food. We had musaka and lemon chicken. Wonderful taste and served with a Greek salad and rice
google avatar

AandE D.

Yelp
So glad they are back open and now with a liquor license! Can't wait to enjoy Ouzo on the new patio that's in the works. The food is still as delicious as ever, one of the few remaining authentic Greek restaurants in LA.

Pat E.

Yelp
OPEN again. Amid the devastation in Altadena, Nancy's has reopened. The food is as fresh and delicious as ever, and now with beer and wine. With Corfu in Sierra Madre closed, Nancy's is the only local place to find genuine Greek Food, and at reasonable prices. If you have been there before the fire, go and welcome them back. If not, go or order take out or delivery to discover a wonderful place and support Nancy's and the Altadena community.

Mike V.

Yelp
Please help support these guys, they have reopened after the Eaton Fire and need our support. Their food is outstanding and worthy of our support.

Yelp
Nice family ran place. Food was really good. Orders came out a little mixed up, but the people that took us there said that was usual. I liked the place, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go again. Check it out if you are in the area.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of lamb in kebab form in particular. Nancy's Greek Cafe has one of the best in town. The plate with fluffy rice and a tasty salad on the side was a perfect lunch. The baklava was also delicious, though I'm not a connoisseur, I could tell it was fresh and made with high quality ingredients. I love the character, charm, and hospitality of family restaurants, and Nancy's is the best example of just that.

Lauren L.

Yelp
Shrimp salad was the best !! The taste was fresh and cooked just right. I took my food to go but the place seems nice.

V R.

Yelp
Such a lovely place. Exceptional service and great tasting food. Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Do Not Go Here. Rude and unprofessional. As I walked towards the establishment two people were leaving. The cook or whomever was servicing the establishment was standing at the counter. As I continued to walk in he stared at me and walked to the back. I came in and stood at the counter for five minutes. No greeting, no acknowledgement, nothing. I was looking forward to trying the shrimp salad, dolmas, and baklava if they had it. Safe to say I will not be back. Super sad that in 2024 there are still discriminatory establishments.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to try some place new for lunch during summer break and we chose Nancy's. It looks like they've just done a bit of remodeling and they have the most wonderful murals on the walls, as well as colorful plants outside by the entrance, giving you the felling of being in a small village somewhere. (Speaking of, the woman who seated us just happened to be a parent of one of the students in my friend's first grade class at her PUSD school--it's a small world). The menu is quite extensive and the owner took time to explain several dishes to us in the "sandwich" category. I ended up with the gyro and my friend had the chicken breast souvlaki, both wrapped up in a huge pita stuffed with so much food that my friend ended up taking part of hers home. The food was very fresh and delicious and since we were stuffed we decided to each take a brownie to go. After such a great experience, I'm looking forward to bringing my husband some evening in the near future and ordering an entree.

Yelp
This is one of my bf and my's favorite little cafe's, serving up delicious and authentic Greek specialties. Today we had my favorite - the Beef Moussaka (eggplant layered with beef in sauce, topped with bechamel) served with roasted potatoes and vegetables, and an excellent Greek Salad. We often get their flatbread stuffed sandwiches. Prices are reasonable at $25 for the moussaka dinner (I took home half) and $8. for the salad. Easy parking in their lot. The gentleman who often serves us is very friendly. As everything is made to order, this is not a place to come if you want "fast casual" because it takes awhile to receive your food, but it will be served hot and perfectly made. Great for take out and family meals.

Jay K.

Yelp
This restaurant is a gem, comfortable and authentic. Prices were quite reasonable. Server was knowledgeable and attentive. I had leg of lamb with pilaf and greek vegetables. The lamb was tender and served in a flavorful sauce. We'll be back.
google avatar

Norie V.

Yelp
We went there for lunch @2pm on Sat after the hike in Altadena. There was no one at the restaurant, so we had to place to all ourselves. They were busy with some big catering order, but they managed to serve us well. We ordered 4 different things, and we were all happy campers after all. I had gyro, I wish they put more green vegitables instead of grilled potatos, but that was how they served their food. Ambience: Super nice! Loved it. Parking: It is in a mid-size strip mall, and you will find a parking spot. I will definitely go baaaaaaaaack if I am in the area again.
google avatar

Sashur R.

Yelp
What a lovely spot. Beautiful murals. Their Greek salad is phenomenal, the feta is so rich and delicious. Everything is fresh. The lamb kabobs was so tender and flavorful. Gyro is HUGE. Owner is so kind and sweet. Just a great experience all around.

Yelp
This place is INCREDIBLE! It was the best meal I've had in a long time - the food was delicious and perfectly prepared. And the people.... They were so warm and welcoming, it felt like having lunch with friends. I will absolutely be back (they also make AMAZING brownies!)
google avatar

Janna G.

Yelp
Very tasty, fresh and healthy food. Kind service and great location. I picked up but you could eat at the restaurant. It's small but charming.

Yelp
Tucked in a nondescript corner of a mall, one can be forgiven for almost missing this gem in Altadena. Upon entering Nancy's you are greeted with the warm and friendly environment. The decor was very inviting, with murals of the Greek gods and landscapes, completed with a good dose of blue and whites. We were seated immediately and treated to really attentive service by our host, Meredith. It was hard to decide at first, but I went for the lamb shank with Greek potatoes on the side. Everything is cooked when ordered so expect to relax and enjoy the ambience while your meal is being prepared. We were surprised that the food came out pretty fast (15-20 minutes). Both the lamb and potatoes were seasoned to perfection - the flavor of the herbs in the sauce was coming out so well that I was literally rubbing my potatoes into it after each bite. The meat from the lamb shank was so soft that it was almost sliding out of the bone by itself. I almost felt bad voraciously finishing it up. Worth the wait. It was also great to meet Shawn who told us how the lamb was prepared the night before. If the flavors wasn't enough to convince, the preparation makes one really tell the care and passion that went into the food. All in all, it was a delightful and delicious experience. Expect us to be back soon to try the other entrees.

Rudolf W.

Yelp
We had lamb shanks and leg of lamb. Both were very good, tasty, tender soft as butter. They were cooked with a delicious sauce that enhanced the flavor of the meat without distracting from it.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Meh. You can get your Greek food fix here, but kinda middle of the road. We tried rice, musaka, lamb and some sides.

Susan L.

Yelp
The food is always good and authentic Greek Humus and taboiuli delicious and fresh! Today I had fantastic lamb skewer with rice and Greek salad . Love every bite! And I drive over 15 miles to eat here! The owner is a lovely man and I'm so happy his business survived the Eaton fires of LA!
google avatar

Phoebe Y.

Yelp
Such a lovely place! The man who helped us was so sweet, very accommodating and kept checking in on us after too. Food was super good and very fresh. Would definitely recommend you try this place out:)
google avatar

Jane A.

Yelp
For the price.... No. We ordered three plates and one baklava cost us just under $90 obviously with tip over $100. We expected at least some tzatziki for the dry meat and rice but no. No sauce, no hot sauce packets, no garlic sauce. Portions mediocre again for price. Baklava seemed like it was packaged for a very long time, tasted like the plastic box it came in, stale. We ordered gyro plates. Got lule cut up. So not sure what's they were doing there. If sauces were extra, then please say that next time or put on menu so we know. But the price.... No. Too expensive for that.

Yelp
My husband and I work from home and decided to grab a late lunch together. The few usual local places were all closed so we decided to try something new. What a wonderful experience we just had at Nancy's Greek Cafe!!!!! The food was some of the best we have had in years, such fresh and authentic ingredients. The place is beautiful with newly painted Greek murals and beautiful plants etc., the owner was so friendly and kind! This place is our new go to for sure!! What a gem for the community! Make sure you go!!
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Well worth the wait. Everything is made to order so takes a bit longer but it's soooo worth the wait. Some of the best Greek food and Greek coffee I've had in a long time. We ordered the moussaka, spanakopita, and pastisio. I don't know whats in their moussaka but it's divine! Also need to point out their Greek potatoes and rated veggies were cooked to perfection. The place is tucked into the corner on Altadena Dr and Lake. It is the same place that was Nancys bakery so save room for dessert. Our server was nice enough to cut up a lemon bar and pecan bar so we could all share.
google avatar

Ruth K.

Yelp
Great food. Excellent service. Even though it rained. We still came. Nice location. Nice people.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
Well let's start out with the menu so as I was perusing the menu the one thing I did note was like wow they're a little pricey but I thought maybe you get what you pay for right so this food will be great (never assume). I ordered the beef souvlaki, a side of lentil soup and a side of hummus. Honestly, the food was all around pretty tasteless, with no flavor. The lentil soup was tomato based, which I've never had. Maybe that's the norm in Greek restaurants, but I was disappointed in how it just tasted like tomato soup. Let me just add that if it had a good flavor, it would have been okay. I'm not saying I didn't like it just because it was tomato based. The beef was overcooked, had no flavor, and was really dry. And for the price a little lean on the portion of food. Had it not been for the star of the show, the "Hummus" this meal would have been a total bust. This was a takeout meal, so I'm can't speak on ambiance or service. Overall, for me, this is a big NO. Too pricy for food that wasn't great !!!
google avatar

Squirrel-face S.

Yelp
This is a husband wife team and they make really great food! It is not fast and the ambience is......meh? But it's authentically made to order right now. Another drawback is, and this will turn a lot of you off, I know it turns me off, i've never seen this guy or his helper once, wash their hands! Never gotten sick from eating there, but it definitely bothers me. The food is authentic and they have a food passion, which is great and their prices are also extremely reasonable. Also, they're in a terrible spot like if you wanted to eat outside you just take it home anyway because they're situated between two buildings in a big parking lot. Great food.
google avatar

Tomer G.

Yelp
You can tell when there is craft and love that goes into making the food you eat, and this place has plenty. We has the Tzatziki which was so flavorful. We got the mussaka and the gyro plate, and both were probably the best we've ever had, both in terms of the quality of the meat, and the overall flavor. The potatoes were cooked perfectly, which is rarely the case with bigger pieces, and the roasted veggies were all soft and melting in your mouth. We will be coming back to try so many of the items as the all sound delicious.
