The Ultimate Guide in Navigating Taipei's Night Markets

"The Nanjichang community has attracted many movie crews with its old Taipei architecture, while also drawing in the gourmet crowd with its local cuisine. At the entrance of the night market, you can kick off your street food experience with a bowl of springy and succulent Shan Nay Chicken rice together with the Chinese angelica chicken broth." - Hsieh Ming Ling

"A boisterous, old-school-feeling traditional market in the western, older part of the city that remains a beloved local favorite for nocturnal snackers seeking authentic night-market atmospherics and stalls." - Chris Horton

Yet another night market well worth the visit especially because they have toilets! It is low key on a week night, again slightly different food from other night markets. I had crispy crepe filled with pork, corn, cabbage, very yummy. So was the grilled Vietnamese sausage on a stick, guava juice, sticky rice with egg. Just wish I could eat more!

Being far from the train, there are very few tourist here and prices appear to about 30% lower than others such as Ximending, Shilin, Ningxia or Roahe, however the quality is overall better. There is a fine attention to detail, and as much, if not more variety than Roahe as vendors have to complete over local residents, who probably have been eating here for decades, as opposed to the single time visit from a tourist. This market is not linear like Roahe or Ningxia, but overlaps multiple intersects. This market is comprised of four short blocks, with three intersections. The intersection run perpendicular in both directions for one block. This is perhaps one of the better food based night markets, and there are a few gaming or pachinko shops and arcade shops here. This night market is worth the walk south.

Smaller scale than popular night markets but has many different & unique options. Everything we ate here was great; the stinky tofu (store 22), Japanese curry rice (store 43), oyster fritter (store 28), luoroufan (at the entrance). Would definitely come back again

Google
Not a very big night market but good enough to fill you up. Every stall has a number tag displayed so it makes it easier to locate the food store. Mostly locals frequent this market, not many tourists. We reached around 9+ and quite a number of stores were already closed. Hence, best to head there earlier. Highly recommended to try the Grill Corn shop , Michelin recommended grill corn. The lady boss was so approachable and friendly.. It even has a small table for u to consume your corn and other food items from other stores. We love the grill corn and prices are also transparent as it was stated by the different size of corn you choose. Do support her if you are there!

The most organized and local night market of them all - nangchang surprised me in a good way! They had signs and labels for each stall with numbers and names in English. The night market is organized like a cross, with the longest part being alley 307. It was so organized and easy to find everything. Master Yu Shanghai PanFried Buns - Second as you enter, #5, Michelin rated pan fried buns. This was one of the few places I encounter that had a cabbage bun as an option. It was pretty good and the line moved quickly - they were pumping out buns quickly. The cabbage was good and bun was softer than most others - the texture was more like a bao. Honestly, not bad for 20NTD. You can get 5 for 1 which is a better deal and if you’re starving, I recommend this and skipping #3. Shan Nay Chicken - Another Michelin rated spot, #3 Shan Nay Chicken is famous for its cold chicken, broth, and rice. A tender and rice sets you back 120NTD. We were a bit confused how to eat it but saw that most people dipped their chicken in the broth then followed by rice. It was good, but my side of the chicken had quite a bit of bone in it and I didn’t appreciate the coldness much at all. The rice and sweet sauce they used was really good so I’d probably opt curry rice next time and skip the chicken. Unnamed Clay Oven - Another highly rated Michelin place that owns a current Bib Gourmand status but I honestly don’t know why. We waited ONE HOUR in line for this and got some baked dough with sesame seeds at the end of it. It’s operated by an elderly couple - the wife making the buns, the husband arranging it on the clay oven and handing them out, and the son cooking in the oven. The whole process is so slow and not efficient, unlike anything we’ve encountered in Taipei before. they make several at a time and hold the line until they have a decent amount to hand out but the problem is, 1 person buys like 10 in one go so the line hardly moves at all! By the time we got to the front, they ran out of the scallion. We got 3 of the red bean and 2 sugar. The red bean was good, although a little burnt/crispy on the outside. The sugar was hollow and sweet. If this place didn’t have an hour long wait, I’d honestly be less salty about the whole thing but I don’t think the wait is worth the end result in this case unless you’re buying 20+ pieces. They do run out pretty quickly and will close the stall early once they’re out of supplies. If you really want to try this, I recommend you get here BEFORE 5PM and get in line. Otherwise, I would pass.

If you are looking for traditional and variety of Taiwanese and other food. This is the place! Very nice to walk around try all kind of amazing food. Not so chaotic and well organize. Price are a lot cheaper than other night market. I came here 2 times for this trip.

The place was most crowded at around 9pm where you basically need to line up for every food store. The line gets better after 10pm and it is just more comfortable to wander around the streets. The food options offered here are some of the best in Taipei. It may not be the most popular among tourists but is definitely packed with locals.

Google
I really liked this one. I like the vibes, good variety of better products not just the simple stuff. I also like the signs they have posted at each vendor labeling each vendor with a title and a number. This one seems to be one of the more local night markets not directed at tourists with more food and less shopping.

Yelp
My first Taiwanese night market! We only had about 10 hours to spend in Taiwan for a layover but it was definitely worth it to visit this market. The food is so good and fresh and vendors are all friendly. There's a lot of food choices here, and it's a popular spot.

Yelp
One of the overlooked night markets in Taipei. It does have a lot to offer with maybe a slightly different taste, but on the good side. It is worth checkout for comparison purposes.

Yelp
Underrated night market with some good eats and user friendly signs and menus. It's not too big but has some interesting specialty dishes including steamed stinky tofu, shao bing, steamed chicken with rice, and sesame balls in sake/fermented rice soup.

Yelp
Small night market but full of good food vendors. Dumplings are hand made and cooked to order. Freshly juiced juice. Some shoe and clothing vendors.
