You can usually rate your stay at a hotel or in this case a ryokan, by its bed. Let’s face it, we all need a great night’s sleep when travelling and following long days sightseeing. |Although I would commend this Ryokan on its beautifully designed suites, a hard futon is unbearable and torturous. If you don’t like the sensation of sleeping on the floor, which is what this futon felt like, then it’s quite possibly a deal breaker for you too. |Of course you could overlook this if all attempts are made to solve the issue after a long sleepless night. When you are paying well-north of $1000 per night, expectations should be high. |The staff offered no solution and the day went by with no remedy. After some distress they remade the bed wedging two feather doonas between the futon and the fitted sheet. This made no impact and I endured another sleepless night. After two nights I was shattered and fragile and eager to leave. ||In regard to suite amenities, there is no body lotion or shower caps, possibly my two highly sought after needs when travelling. Is this penny pinching? No little treats waiting for you when you return from a long day out. Usually something a high end boutique stay would offer. |The restaurant is worthy of mention, the attention to detail with each dish is authentically Japanese and a total treat. This experience however can easily be enjoyed as an external guest for a fraction of the cost we committed to our stay. |Other side notes |- coffee very average|- welcome drink is green tea (no extras) hopefully you like green tea! |- location is at the end of an uninspiring street on the outskirts of Honmura, unlike Bennesse House which has stunning ocean views. |- The private onsen was a blessing to ease the muscles after a long night on the hard futon. |- The fire pit was a nice place to sit after dinner. |If I had my time again, I would not stay here but I would visit for the Sushi Kaiseki dinner. |I rarely write reviews but I really felt that this needed to be shared. I did request to speak with the manager however he was conveniently unavailable. |Buyer beware.
