OMG??? Maybe there IS good sushi in SF!!! When I first moved to the Bay area I figured that a coastal city would have an abundant showcase of seafood and sushi and yet the sushi that I've had thus far has been sad, overpriced, and miniscule in portion! I'm sure if I went for omakase I would be presented with the most amazing cuts available on the west coast, even Aji Kiji, the affordable box version of Omakase, convinced me that if I laid down the money I could achieve fish heaven. Frankly speaking though, I feel that my favorite sushi experience is AYCE or humble, casual joints that have big cuts of nigiri or generously stuffed rolls for reasonable prices. It doesn't have to be the fanciest thing in the world! I just want the best bang for my buck! For better or for worse my benchmark is Sushi Taku in Chicago, the best AYCE sushi ever. For under $40 you can have as many of the thickest, most glorious cuts of salmon nigiri you want. It is incredibly challenging to beat that level of value and because I've experienced that high it's hard for me to imagine dropping cash on 3+ rolls and 4+ nigiri and 3+ hand rolls to measure up to fulfilling meal.
My partner and I were looking for a dinner place after climbing at Benchmark on Van Ness and we saw that Nara had a happy hour deal for hand rolls. We haven't had huge success finding fairly priced and delicious sushi thus far and so our expectations were already middling. Nara completely blew us out of the water and after our first bite we were literally flabbergasted. The first thing that came out of our mouths was, "this is the best sushi place in SF." Obviously most people with a more refined palette would scoff at the idea of a casual sushi restaurant being the best sushi in SF, but here's the deal, Nara checked all the boxes for me. The fish tasted so fresh, the cuts were so generous, the rolls were absolutely stuffed, the menu had flair (I mean there is an appetizer literally called Shrek????), and the vibe was cozy and not stuffy at all. We started with the garlic edamame and it tasted like if BWW garlic Parmesan sauce was a dry rub on edamame. Each bean pod was salty, the parsley was bright, I was SLURPING AND SUCKING the favor off every single pod, it was that good. We also ordered the Shrek, a heaping pile of spicy tuna, crab, and shrimp tempura, all topped off with a dome of avocado. It tasted exactly how you would expect it to taste, and it was fantastic. We also ordered the big boss roll which was stuffed with three kinds of fish cucumber and avocado. Because there was so much fish the fish to rice ratio was PERFECT! Honestly the picture doesn't do it justice but there was so much salmon, tuna, and hamaci spilling out the sides!! Finally I think we got 9 handrollls in total, bc it was happy hour each hand roll was like $5-7 . Each one was cute and perfect, the flavor was absolutely satisfying and SO worth the happy hour deal! Will be BACK!!
