Everyone turns into a cheesecake person at Nash Bakes - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"As with chocolate chip cookies, what makes cheesecake great depends entirely on who you ask. But no matter where you fall on the cheesecake spectrum, Nash Bakes in the Ferry Building does the job. The versions are smooth and creamy while still putting up a fight with your fork. (Be forewarned, though, that crumbly crust loyalists should look elsewhere.) Prioritize the traditional and passionfruit above all others, and skip the lemon poppy and black sesame, which can be a bit dry. If you’re interested in trying a savory cheesecake, there’s always the capers and lox flavor, complete with a bagel crust and smoked salmon on top. It’s fun once for the novelty, but you’re better off eating an actual bagel. One more note: some slices are sold frozen, so we suggest checking with the staff if you plan on digging in immediately on one of the nearby benches. video credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Nash Bakes: Lemon Poppyseed and Salmon Lox Cheesecakes Hit the Ferry Building | Eater SF

"Owner Jared Nash, a Pacific Northwest–raised pastry chef who baked at Northern California restaurants, including now-closed Julia’s Kitchen and Orson, has opened a cheesecake-focused kiosk inside the Ferry Building. He grew up outside of Portland, worked in commercial bakeries at grocers including Fred Meyer, attended culinary school, interned at the Hyatt in Lake Tahoe, spent eight years crisscrossing the lake’s food scene and worked as pastry chef under San Francisco pastry wiz Nicole Plue at Napa’s Julia’s Kitchen, then at Orson, then under Arnold Eric Wong (executive chef of E&O Trading Company), and also worked under celebrity chef Elizabeth Faulkner. The operation—visually likened to the Ocean Malasada outpost that debuted in July 2024 near Gott’s Roadside—will be open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; the kiosk debuts on Wednesday, July 23 with a quiet launch before a later grand-opening announcement on social media. Unlike many cheesecake spots, the menu spans classics and adventurous flavors: classics include raspberry swirl and salted caramel (six-inch pies going for $30), there’s a gluten-free vanilla bean and a lemon poppyseed, and farther afield is a salmon lox caper-dill cheesecake atop a toasted bagel crust with the salmon, capers, and pickled onion flowering from the center like a fishy bouquet. Reflecting his cheffed-up background, Nash offers seasonal, fine-dining-leaning options—light purple mulberry cheesecakes when the fruit is ripe in summer, a margarita cheesecake on a pretzel crust for Cinco de Mayo, a malted Easter egg for Easter—and the initial launch menu will focus on vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, lemon poppy, raspberry swirl, passionfruit, black sesame, and the salmon lox, with other one-offs (peanut butter and mint chip, for instance) to come. He’s been selling at Peninsula farmers’ markets (popping up at the San Carlos Farmers Market and Robert’s Market on Woodside Road) and typically works out of commissary kitchens, which he says can be almost turnkey with the green light from city officials. "This is an opportunity for me to get things moving on a regular basis," Nash says. "Let's give it a year or two and see where it goes, let the Ferry Building lead me a bit." - Paolo Bicchieri

The cheese cake is about average in taste. The one I tried was the traditional. I didn’t think it was anything special. The size of the slice is incredibly small. Next time I was by the ferry building, I mentioned that to the gentleman. He said that was an accident and gave me another slice, which was generous of him. That second slice was small as well.

The best cheesecake I’ve had in the Bay Area. I was missing good cheesecake after living in NYC, but the ones here have lovely texture and taste. I tried the traditional one and the holiday peppermint one

Bought a whole passion fruit cheesecake for a dinner party and it was a huge hit! Multiple people mentioned it was the best cheesecake they’d ever had. Looking forward to coming back and trying more flavors!

Yelp
Brand new cheesecake stand in the Ferry Building, filling the void of the old cheesecake stand. You can buy it by the slice or the whole cake. The slices look kinda small, compared to like Cheesecake Factory size, but they're rich and filling. Passionfruit Cheesecake: Love the contrast of rich dense cheesecake again tangy fresh passionfruit. They even left the seeds in, for a nice crunch. A good flavorful crust too. Probably my favorite here! Cookies & Cream Cheesecake: A really fun cheesecake. Reminded me of the ice cream, but not frozen. Loved how the crust was made from cookies too. Cookie Monster would definitely approve. Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake: Once again, I love the contrast of fruit and cheesecake. The swirl is more subtle than topping, so the cheesecake is the dominant flavor. But still a nice subtle medley. Salted Caramel Cheesecake: I was kinda expecting this to be more caramel intense. Like why not add some caramel swirls? It was sweeter than regular cheesecake and had a hint of caramel. Probably the least memorable. Black Sesame Cheesecake: This looked like something Wednesday Addams would totally approve of. It also had a not-that-sweet and kinda tahini-like taste. I enjoyed the uniqueness. Savory Salmon Cheesecake: Had to try this just to say I did. It wasn't as horrible as you'd think. The cheesecake is not sweet, so it kinda tasted like an oversized spread of dill cream cheese. The bagel crust is really crumbly. The salmon kinda gets overpowered by all the cheese. The capers and pickled onion add a nice contrast. Glad I tried, but not something I'd go for again.

Yelp
Stand inside the middle of the ferry building selling slices and whole cheesecakes! I got the black sesame slice and it was good! I appreciated the thick layer of crust at the bottom which is a ratio I prefer. Crust itself was nice and crumbly. Flavor wasn't as strong, interested to try the others!

Yelp
It's always nice to see shops and stands opening in the Ferry Building. Watching a local TV news broadcast , I learned about this new stand opening as they interviewed the young lady who manned this shop located by the right entrance door under the clock tower as you face the building. After finishing my Tuesday farmer's market shopping, I stopped here for a look. Looking at their signs, display case, and offerings, I asked for her recommendations, and she mentioned a few flavors. I decided to start off with two slices. The 1st one that I tried at home was the passion fruit cheesecake slice (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=NHsAtlZVAssy83NldRXmxA); it was packed very nicely and very eye catching. It was tasty and not overly rich, dense, or sweet, but the passion fruit flavor was mild. Perhaps my palate is too demanding for that 'wow' factor. I also tried the black sesame cheesecake slice (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=iTPW2HiCYJf4zOOkiLvBSg), less attractive, but my favorite of the two. Unlike the other one, the flavors here were bold and defined and I really enjoyed the crust that they paired with the cake. I will get this again. Thank you, Courtney, for describing the different flavors and sharing the background of your company. As I am watching my sweets, I am pacing myself in stopping here. I will try the Salted Caramel cheesecake next time I stop by and perhaps get another black sesame.

Yelp
3.5 STARS Salmon Lox Cheesecake?! As a lactose intolerant, it's worth the bubble guts to find out! Soft opening in the Ferry Building this week, Nash Bakes offers sweet and savory cheesecakes. The owner started selling cheesecakes in San Carlos and San Mateo, and this is his first permanent space (kiosk). Hours of operation: Open everyday, 10:30 am - 6:30 pm. M E N U Slices: $7 + 6 inch cheesecakes: $30 Current flavors: Vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream, lemon poppy, raspberry swirl, passionfruit, black sesame, salted caramel, and salmon lox. Highly recommend buying a slice (small palm sized) to taste test before buying a whole cheesecake. * Salmon Lox Cheesecake Slice ($7 x2) Inspired by a salmon lox bagel, the tough bagel crust is layered with very dry crumbly cream cheese with a briny, citrus flavor from the capers and dill. Crowned with buttery, silky smooth cured lox (fav part). The gentleman said, it was baked fresh this morning and to eat it asap (we did) so not sure why the cream cheese was as dry as a scone. * Vanilla Cheesecake Slice ($7) The original fared better but was just ok, dense with a thick, sweet cookie crust. I prefer cheesecakes with a softer, creamy texture. Overall, I was disappointed with the cheesecakes' (2.5 stars) but it's soft opening for a small business so giving them grace. With Basuku and Zanze's gone (I know the latter is available frozen at Little Original Joe's but I miss the charm of their storefront), Nash Bakes may be welcome addition to the city.

Yelp
Salmon Lox Cheesecake? That's something new this year! Might buy and bite next time. Just had to buy the Black Sesame Cheesecake instead! One of the specials before the seasonal changes. I should never forget to check on a one-man service where the atmosphere inside the Ferry Building was amazing as ever. Nash Bakes was as good as Cheesequakes!

Yelp
Delicious Vanilla cheesecake. A whole cheesecake can serve 4-8. It's not too heavy and the crust is just perfect and not dried out. Would love to devour this weekly, but i'd have to take out a 2nd line of credit.

Yelp
Delicious cheesecake! I got the passion fruit for $7 a slice and it was a nice blend of tangy sweet cheesy flavor. They have a lot of other interesting flavors as well! The owner is also very sweet :) Please stop by if you're in the area! It's located inside the Ferry Building closer to the middle section
