Nina Compton’s BABS Closes in the Bywater | Eater New Orleans

"An intimate, neighborhood-focused restaurant housed in the Rice Mill Lofts that began as a Bywater American Bistro in 2018 and was renamed in 2024; it offered a polished-casual vibe and a modern American menu with prominent nods to the chef’s Caribbean roots. The James Beard Award–winning chef and her husband, who live in the neighborhood, closed the restaurant with last service on May 31; their publicist stressed the decision was planned in advance and was not due to a seasonal slowdown. The couple said they are shifting focus to other projects, have no plans to reopen something new in the space, and expressed gratitude for seven successful years of service." - Beth D’Addono

Babs - Review - Bywater - New Orleans - The Infatuation

"New Orleans is full of elite neighborhood restaurants, but few of them are as good as Babs. The bistro, which is the sister restaurant to Compere Lapin, focuses its space and menu on warmth and big flavors. Blackened octopus, for example, might come atop a sweet potato coconut puree, or you might find andouille mixed in with the spaghetti carbonara. Regardless of what you order, the restaurant is perfect for almost any stage of your night. It's the place to catch up with a friend over a glass of wine at the bar, or to bring your parents when you want to introduce them to the best of the Bywater." - Chelsea Brasted

The 19 Best Restaurants & Bars In The Bywater & Marigny 2024

"Bab's (formerly Bywater American Bistro) does Cajun, Caribbean, Creole, and Southern dishes, and is just steps away from one of the best views in the city at Crescent Park. While you can’t go wrong with sitting inside the industrial-meets-cozy dining room, the best option is to grab a spot at the high top just outside the front door. From there, you can watch the world pass by while trying blackened octopus, arancini with paddlefish caviar, and wagyu beef lasagna. As the younger sister restaurant to the equally popular (but a little fancier) Compere Lapin, this place regularly fills up with both visitors from around the world and neighbors from down the block—all of whom will happily give you their personal recs of where to grab a few drinks after dinner." - team infatuation, megan braden perry

I’ve lived at Rice Mill Lofts for the past two years and truly enjoyed my time here. The building is beautiful, the amenities are great, and the rooftop views and pool are some of the best you’ll find. The community always felt welcoming and friendly, which made it an awesome place to call home. I especially want to shout out Sarah and Gregory — they do an outstanding job managing the day-to-day operations. Always helpful, always kind, and they constantly brought positive energy. Coming home after work and seeing their smiles really made a difference. I recently moved out due to life changes, otherwise I would have gladly stayed. I highly recommend Rice Mill Lofts to anyone looking for a great living experience in New Orleans.

I have been a resident of the Rice Mill Lofts for the past 4 years and have just resigned my lease. For anyone who is looking for beautiful views and lots amenities, this is the place for you. The rooftop seating, that over looks the river, is a perfect place to enjoy a great book and the view at night is stunning. The pool area is beautiful and if you enjoy swimming as a form of exercise this is a perfect lap pool. The maintenance team does a fantastic job of keeping the building and the grounds in pristine condition. The front office management is always very helpful with any questions and create a very happy environment. Lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance not to mention the suburb restaurant in the building itself. I am not one to write reviews but I thought after 4 years of living here and still so content it was time to write and let others know about this little gem in the Bywater.

The location (Bywater), the building (Rice Mill), and the apartments are as spectacular as described and, together with the pool area and the rooftop are a wonderful place to make a home. It is quiet, safe, and convenient with friendly neighbors and great staff. And it is the latter, the staff, that really complete the picture. There are many lovely looking apartment buildings in town that are not functionally good places to live. At Rice Mill, the apartments are lovely, to be sure, but the most important thing is that the property is well managed. Maintenance for the units is terrific and prompt and the common areas are clean and well cared for thanks to Gregory and Miguel. Tanya, the face of the building in the front office is welcoming and, should there be a problem, quick to respond and resolve issues on the spot. She and Gregory are also pro-active in those "soft" areas of management - the people-centered things - handling and avoiding problems with a light touch and gentle humor, while keeping things on track and maintaining the good order that benefits all. Highly recommended.
