Necco Review - West LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"When you live in a city the size of LA, you become familiar with the in-between areas. They’re those quiet stretches of town where neighborhoods end and new ones haven’t quite started yet, and almost everyone is on their way to someplace else. West LA is one of this city’s quintessential in-betweens. Sandwiched between Santa Monica, Culver City, Century City, and Westwood, it’s where everybody ends up eventually, yet few know what to do once they get there. Here’s a tip - go eat at Necco, a casual Japanese restaurant serving some of our favorite meals in the area. Necco has been open since 2014, but unless you live in the neighborhood surrounding Westwood Blvd., chances are you’ve never heard of it. And that’s part of the allure - it feels like a secret. Its tiny, sparsely decorated space (there’s about eight tables to go around) exudes a Zen-like energy that’s ideal for waiting out rush hour traffic or clearing your head during UCLA midterms. But when the food starts hitting the table, you realize Necco is much more than just a relaxing sanctuary. This is some of the best Japanese food for the price on the Westside. photo credit: Jakob Layman Necco is technically a small plates/tapas restaurant, and depending on when you’re there, you’ll be handed anywhere from 3-5 different menus as soon as you sit down. There’s the daily specials, a la carte tapas, a full list of their big platters, and a page describing all their different omusubi (Japanese rice balls). Needless to say, it’s tough to know which direction you’re supposed to head in. Here’s what you do - get the “Best In One” combo. It’s a $30 platter featuring 10 different Japanese tapas, plus two omusubi balls, that also happen to be the 10 best things on the menu. You’ll get a perfectly marinated miso salmon, deep-fried lotus root, and some of our favorite jidori fried chicken in LA. The thick slices of mozzarella cheese sitting around the edge of the platter might be a surprise, but after tasting how fresh they are - and how well they go with the tempura vegetables - you’ll quickly be asking for more. It’s a lot of food, but if you come hungry, you can definitely handle it as a solo lunch. If you’re with a group, put it in the center of the table for everybody to pick at, then add in other tapas or more fried chicken (because the first order was eaten too quickly). When a restaurant is as full of good food as Necco is, it’s important to sit back and enjoy it. After all, if you’re here, you’re probably on your way to somewhere else. But now that you have a good reason to stop and hang out for a bit, that destination can wait. Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman Best In One You can go to Necco and order as much a la carte tapas as you want, or you can make your life easier and get this combo platter instead. Deep-fried lotus root, Japanese roast beef, karaage chicken, marinated salmon, goma ae (sesame marinated kale and nori), fresh vegetables, tofu, mozzarella, miso soup, and two omusubi of your choice. For $30, it’s a tremendous value and also a great way to try the best things that Necco serves. Whether you’re with a group or by yourself, this has to hit the table. photo credit: Jakob Layman Kale Nori Goma Ae This remarkably simple dish (boiled kale in a sesame and seaweed sauce) appears on the Best In One, but if you’re with a group, it’s not nearly enough for everybody - especially because it’ll be everybody’s favorite. So order this big version as well. Actually, go ahead and order two of them. photo credit: Jakob Layman Jidori Chicken Karaage Deep-fried in potato starch and marinated in a dashi broth with ginger, this plate of chicken is aromatic, savory, and full-out addicting. And at $9, it’s an excellent solo lunch option if you aren’t in the mood to fully commit to the Best In One." - Brant Cox

"Health-conscious Necco serves super fresh small Japanese dishes, with an emphasis on tasty root vegetables like ginger, daiko, lotus root, and carrot. The dishes are prepared in satisfyingly innovative ways, and the restaurant's clean, minimalist décor suits perfectly."

Really awesome lunch at Necco. Wish we would have come here sooner during our LA trip then we can return for another meal. Tried their Best in one meal set with added uni chawan mushi. Also had all of their regular omusubi except the kinpari. We like the goma omusubi and the miso eggplant omusubi the best. The salmon was super tender and paired nicely with the Mayo based topping. Chicken was nicely marinade and perfectly grilled. The lotus root stuffed with shrimp was so lovely that even my mom who is not a fan of any fried food was enjoying it lots. Definitely one of the highlights meal of our trip, thank you so much Necco :) we will be back when we return to LA next time.

I had the necco buffalo cauliflower, deep fried. It had the traditional taste of buffalo wings, but felt relatively light. The spicy tuna bites were good, but I would have preferred a more traditional roll which wasn't marinated by the chef. Otherwise, it is rather expensive. Ordering more than just a couple of tapas adds up. However, the staff are kind and friendly.

Great food and amazing service. Can't wait to try the meat dishes as I came here with my vegan sister. The miso zucchini eggplant aioli was perfect. They had yamaimo tempura - crispy on the outside and gooey in the inside! Parking is next door that's validated ($2) and plenty of free street parking close by. The highlight for me is in the desserts. Vegan cheesecake with currants is made with tofu and oatmeal. Great taste and texture. Raw cocoa tiramisu with coconut and cashew cream is another favorite. Really smooth and rich. Looking forward to trying the vegan okonomiyaki (only served for dinner)

I was looking for a vegan place after work one night and I've come across this tiny spot in West LA. I honestly would not recognize it without looking it up, but I saw some good reviews so I gave it a try. The ambiance was okay - I get that Japanese resto vibe. Staff and chef were really nice. I got the full attention since I was the only person there at the time, which was a bit shocking considering its great reviews. Their okonomiyaki is nothing from what I'm used to but it was not bad. It has brown rice and a lot of edamame beans topped with the typical katsu sauce and vegenaise. The taste was good but the portion was not satisfying. Then after I had their tiramisu. I was honestly expecting a slice of the cake but they have their own twist and put it in a shot glass with fresh fruits on the side. I appreciate the creativity but portion again was unsatisfactory. Now I think, because of that, the $30 meal was a bit unsatisfactory. But I will be forgiving because I got a great service.

Casual, healthy comfort and izakaya style Japanese cuisine. I sat at the chef's counter and saw the Japanese chefs prepare the dishes. The head chef is from Tokyo, but has adapted the taste for SoCal so it's not too salty or spicy. I tried an array of items including organic tofu, Japanese house pickles; sesame kale; lotus root and rice fried croquettes; balsamic shoyu beef; grilled miso salmon; Chirashi sushi. For dessert I had a green tea ice cream sandwich. The sake selection was very good for a small restaurant. I sampled three kinds and my favorite was the Nigori style sake from Gifu, Japan (smooth, creamy, but not overly sweet). Service was efficient and all staff were fluent in English.

High quality Japanese food. Great variety and everything was delicious. Definitely want to come back and try the bento box or come during dinner for all the tapas.

Fantastic, fresh food. We both got the first lunch special option for $16 (includes two rice balls) which included soup and a beautiful presentation of veggies, rice balls, and lightly fried chicken. I was impressed by the quality of ingredients used for the veggie sides and the chicken. The soup was also one of the best miso type soups that I've ever had. We tried three out of the four rice ball options, which were all good. Out of the three, the salmon rice ball was good but not really what I expected, and I think the other options actually were a bit more tasty. The three pieces of chicken were spectacular and perfectly cooked. The proportions of this meal left me feeling satisfied but not overly full or weighted down. The server was very nice and friendly, however after we got here it took about 25 min after we ordered for our food to arrive. I'm not sure why this was the case since we came for Wednesday lunch and there were only 1-2 other parties here as the same time as us. Since I had plans afterwards and didn't think it was going to take this long, I felt a bit rushed while eating and wish I had budgeted more time to take my time enjoying each of the things on my plate. In any case, I would definitely come back again and try their dinner selection. Come if you want a beautiful and delicious meal (assuming you like veggies as much as I do), but don't come if you're looking for something fast.

This is a great find! All of the vegan options I tried were so delicious and had wonderfully traditional flavors. The staff are lovely and accommodating and made me feel very welcome. It is a small space, so if you have a large party I would call ahead for reservations. And definitely try their dessert!
