"Tucked away in an alley, this casual and bustling spot is the brainchild of owner-chef Lai, a Hongkonger trained in the U.S. The seafood-heavy menu has 20 tapas-style items on rotation, alongside large platters for sharing such as the famous salt-baked chicken rice with giblets and morels, and Hokkaido kinki paella. The daily seafood special is always a highlight – try their smoked fish in spices if available. Large platters need pre-ordering." - Michelin Inspector

"Rank: #17 "Despite sitting amid the flamboyant antique shops and art galleries of Hollywood Road, Neighborhood is as discreet as they come. Found in a little courtyard, this French-Italian restaurant comes courtesy of restaurateur David Lai and serves food that resonates with simplicity and style. The restaurant is Lai’s magnum opus."

"Chef David Lai is no stranger to local restaurant hounds, loved by local dining obsessives for bucking food trends and simply serving what he thinks is delicious. The French Laundry alum was one of the first chefs cooking non‐Chinese to shop daily at the city’s “wet” markets (fresh food markets). The menu changes weekly, and features whatever’s in season — be it local, from Japan, or from the south of France. It might be Japanese firefly squid one week, and local lobster the next, always cooked simply with a slight French accent. [$$$]" - Janice Leung Hayes

Tucked away on a quiet backstreet in Central, Neighbourhood is the kind of place that reminds you why dining out can be so special. From the moment you step into its understated, rustic space, you feel you’ve discovered a secret — and it’s one worth keeping. The vibe is intimate and unpretentious, with warm lighting, wooden tables, and shelves lined with wine bottles. There’s no flashy sign or over-the-top decor — just the comforting hum of happy diners and the aroma of something extraordinary coming from the kitchen. We opted for the chef’s selection, and it was the right call. Every dish was beautifully executed, showcasing bold flavours with impeccable balance and finesse. Highlights included the signature roast chicken — perfectly tender and juicy, with crispy skin that was nothing short of addictive — and the seasonal pastas, which were inventive yet deeply satisfying. The ingredients shone, and it was clear how much thought went into sourcing and preparation. The service was warm, knowledgeable, and unobtrusive, which perfectly matched the laid-back yet refined tone of the evening. The wine list is excellent as well, offering a wide range of options at fair prices, and the staff is happy to recommend pairings. Neighbourhood is not just a restaurant — it’s a love letter to good food done, without gimmicks, and to the joy of sharing it with friends. It’s no wonder it’s so highly regarded by chefs, locals, and visitors alike. If you’re lucky enough to score a reservation, go. Bring people you love, order the chef’s menu, and let yourself be surprised.

The server name Maple is amazing! She’s very amazing! The food we found some food to be ok and some s are delicious. We love the salt baked chicken/griblets/morel mushrooms so so much, the chicken is very tender and rice is so yummy. Also the buffaloes wing is not on the crispy side but the taste is nice for me. Also the Australian wagyu beef is pretty tender too. Over all the food was not bad but we were amazed by the service from Maple. 😆

Plates were mostly for sharing; ingredients tasted fresh and flavors were complex; we left the restaurant feeling satiated and satisfied. Every dish was packed with umami. The standout was the fish head, cooked in a rich tomato and potato broth. The baby squids were incredibly flavorful, and I couldn’t resist using bread to soak up every bit of the delicious sauce. The salt-baked chicken rice was a generous portion—even with just half a chicken, it was more than enough for us to share, though we couldn’t quite finish it despite how wonderful it was. While every dish was executed with skill and held complexity, everything also felt very homey and cozy. The atmosphere of this restaurant was comfortable with the exception of a single rude staff who spoke brashly and loud, and did not pour wine properly. Despite that, the food was excellent, and we left with full stomachs and happy taste buds.

The entrance is not from Hollywood Rd, as the address suggests but from a parallel sidewalk around the corner. The food is fantastic. The waitress was very caring and provided a nice service. The hostess was quite moody and unwelcoming when I came, however later on she became more polite.

We had the most delightful evening at Neighbourhood, and it wasn’t just because of the food (though, spoiler alert: the food was amazing). 😜 The real star of the night was Mable, our incredible waitress. She’s the kind of person who makes you feel like you’ve been friends forever—chatty, warm, and with just the right amount of personal anecdotes to keep you entertained. It was like having dinner with a friend who also happens to know the menu inside out. Her personalized recommendations were on point, and she kept the vibe fun and relaxed all night. 🎉 Honestly, Mable alone is worth the visit! Now, onto the food: we started with the Caesar salad, beee tartare, and squid—each dish was fresh, packed with flavor, and perfectly executed. If you’re a fan of Caesar salads, prepare to have your standards raised! For dessert, we couldn’t resist the chocolate mousse and French toast, and wow, they did not disappoint. The mousse was indulgent without being too sweet, and the French toast was the perfect balance of crispy and fluffy. 🤩 Pure dessert heaven! 💰 The best part? All of this culinary magic came at a very reasonable price, making it one of those rare places in Hong Kong where you feel like you’re getting more than your money’s worth. If you’re looking for a restaurant with great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a waitress like Mable who feels like the cherry on top of an already fantastic experience—Neighbourhood is the place to be. We’ll definitely be back, and next time, we’ll bring friends to share the magic. ✨

Tucked away in a secretive lane, Neighborhood is a hidden gem that’s garnered significant acclaim, boasting a Michelin Star and a spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. However, don’t expect flashy signage or a spacious dining area, with tables set side by side, privacy is limited, and the ambiance may not be ideal for those seeking a relaxing evening… The menu is a la carte, and the service staff are attentive and eager to recommend standout dishes. Among their suggestions, the lobster soup is comforting and, the grilled Sicilian baby squids boast a delightful charred flavor, and the daily special seafood—cod fish—was fresh and perfectly cooked. Each dish reflects an attention to detail and bold, flavorful seasoning. That said, by the end of the meal, we felt the seasoning leaned towards the salty side, which may not sit well with everyone.

Sometimes you wonder how a restaurant earned its “Michelin Star” - this is one of those places. The food isn’t bad, but it’s far from great, and your dishes arrive on a beat up IKEA plates. ⭐️? Be prepared to eat in a hurry, the staff rushes you through each course to make room for the next round of diners. Oh, and bring an umbrella, because the aircon drips water everywhere.

Google
Had high expectations of this place and was disappointed that it didn’t live up to expectations. Their star dish salt baked chicken was mediocre and did not impress. It lacked the wow factor and missing a key ingredient to elevate this dish. Preordered the beef and was just normal, didn’t live up to the hype. What a let down

Yelp
This restaurant is pretty good, all meals are fresh and delicious ! The place is small, and all the ingredients are freshly prepared on the day, so most of the menu will be determined the day before and purchased on the day. Their dinner is divided into two echelons, 6:30 or 8:30, be sure to make an appointment in advance to order dishes! Very relaxed environment, first-class service!

Yelp
Neighborhood is a bit tough to find but is well worth your trouble. Like most restaurants in HK, Neighborhood is a cozy place That seats 30 people. Ax. You will need to book in advance. The signature dishes also require pre-ordering so it's best to book at least a week in advance. Food: 4.5 stars Environment/service: 4 stars Value: 4 stars Recommendations: Pin Chuan chicken with morel mushrooms (whole chicken so best to share) The pin chuan chicken dish is a must order. It is baked in salt and served with mushrooms in a cream sauce over rice cooked in cast iron casserole dish. There isn't much description on the menu items so I would suggest taking some time to speak with the staff to understand what to order or to do some research ahead of time. I particularly enjoyed the frog legs, pasta dishes, and chocolate dessert.

Yelp
This place is a bit hard to find. The address is 31 Hollywood road, central but the restaurant is actually located in the little alley behind Hollywood road. Love the ambiance. It's a hidden spot but well decorated, simple, modern and homey. The menu is relative limited and they have exotic items like boar, deer, gooseneck, escargots, beef tripe, so be ready for it if you are up for some adventure. The menu also has steak, salads, paella, pastas, etc. Overall, food was good but not mind blowing. We had the beef/osyter tartare, beef trip gratin, pigeon eggs with escargot butter and finch toast with truffle with black truffle. Flavours are unique and complex but not mind blowing for me.

Yelp
You have so many Italian/French restaurants gems in HK, I would NOT be going to this place again. Sure you have a quaint location, decor. It's a good place to have a quiet dinner and catch up, seemed like there were a few tables on dates there, or bring your mistress here? Dim lighting so everyone is easy on the eyes. The service was horrible. We had the early 7pm seating and basically, they would remind us non-stop that they need the table back by 8:30 once our mains were on the table. Hello? You have empty tables in the backroom and you are already rushing us out? WTF? Presentation - clean. Nothing good nor bad. Your steak tartare - mediocre. We ordered truffles to make it better. Frog legs - over seasoned. Good batter but too salty for me. Your fish of the day - FISHY! Not even fresh. Now i see why you are rushing us out, we might get a bad tummy ache after this meal? Pasta with truffles - meh, I've had better in this city Chocolate cake dessert - hey, not bad! Pretty rich, we are happy the 3 of us shared it. Value for money sure, it's fine but why would I waste my calorie quota on this place again? Wait, I won't be coming back!

Yelp
Neighborhood is found down a side little alley off Peel Street where a few casual little bars reside. Small but nice ambience, and the French/italian menu changes every week. The dishes are small, which means we get to try a wider variety! My favorites were the daily roast - pigeon; garganelli with summer truffle; Black Forest white asparagus with morel and egg; and when you think Caesar salad can't get any better, it does! Special mention is the 36 mo Comte we finished the meal with. Yum.

Yelp
Really well done, simple and elegantly. Food, service, and atmosphere - all of this at reasonable price. Definitely will be back for date nights and small group gatherings.

Yelp
My friend and I arrived at 7 with reservation. A bit hard to find because it's off the road but the waitress was patiently told us the way to go on the phone. We sat down and the waitress started introducing their menu to us. It's interesting that their menu changes every week. We ordered frog leg, fish in soup paste, beef risotto, organic salad and daily meet. Every single dish is extraordinarily. Delicious frog leg, best taste with wine. Sour fish fillet. Daily meat was duck which taste so good. We did not order dessert but they served us their complimentary chocolate cake. Remember to ask them to serve slower. One dish by one dish. That way you would have a better experience.
