The Best African and West African Restaurants in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"The great thing about this southwest Atlanta spot is it also features a retail store chock-full of ingredients used to make the dishes for its restaurant, which also means people can replicate these dishes at home. The menu is generically defined as West African, so expect to find palate-pleasing options like palm fish stew, fish patties, peanut butter stew, and nanburu, a Gambian dessert akin to rice pudding." - Carolyn Desalu

What a great find on Google. The reviews are truly correct. Great food, good customer service and definitely authentic 👌 🙌 👍 😀 😉 . I had the Lamb Chebb , it was my first time and I was beyond well satisfied. Definitely recommended. Parking is tricky but once you get over that , then you can enjoy 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 yumminess.

The food was awesome. They even give samples out to make sure you like what you are ordering. My husband had chicken yassa, I had okra with fufu, my daughter had grilled snapper, and my son had the lamb. Everything was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was cordial to say the least. Not very welcoming. At least the young lady that took our order wasn’t rude. The location, I’m not sure of, we’re not from the area.. but my son was outside throwing something away and these two young men started running towards him from behind, and they stopped suddenly when they saw my husband walk outside towards my son. Thanks Nema for the food.

Food was absolutely amazing. Service was even better. All the ladies at the store explained what everything on the menu was and also blessed with the portion sizes

I just wanted to say I have found my favorite African restaurant I’ve been to many but this by far is the most delicious I’ve been twice this week I just discovered them Tuesday . I’ve gotten Orka stew with fufu and fish stew with white rice and both meals were amazing but my favorite is Orka Stew with fufu if I had to pick don’t walk run here you’ll be amazed.

They were fast and friendly. The okra stew was the best I've tasted but the future, I didn't care fore so much. It could be because I'm American so I'm not sure what is should taste like but I would get the rice with it instead next time.

I come here often. The okra soup is amazing. I brag about so much that last Saturday I paid for 4 orders with extra meat and fufu. My sister was there as well and she ordered the same thing. Normally adults are working but that day it was teenagers/young adults, so the service was horrible! The young lady working said it was not enough okra soup for all our orders and it will be 30 minutes until a new batch is ready. We paid and kindly left and came back to her saying another 20 minutes. We were irritated and hot, yet we waited. We weren't offered anything to drink for our wait nor did anymore people come in to help her on such a busy Saturday. Now it's over an hour and other customers are coming in yelling about the wait time as well. That was very uncomfortable to witness but we understood the anger. Our food is finally ready and our container were full of oil and not the extra meat that we paid for. The oil made a total mess. I asked the young lady where is the extra meat. She said I only can give you what I had. I said no ma'am, that's not how this works. Either give us what we paid for or refund us. We didn't wait all this time for a container of oil and fatty pieces with no meat on it! I said it should not be an argument. You should be more than accommodating since we were kindly waiting!. She went in the back and brought out what we thought was our extra meat. It was mostly bones. I was so pissed off i had to walk away. I couldn't really say what I wanted to because this is a child to me. We did not get my usually awesome okra soup full of orka and meat. I will call before I come back here to make sure some adults are working from now on.

I come here very often but some days the younger employees really are Messing up the orders and cheating the customers out of their money.. it literally looks like they chopped pieces of chicken up and threw it on my plate. Also the food was Luke warm not the chicken but the rice and sides . The last few times I have came my plate didn’t look like this at all. I do recommend this restaurant they do have great food but seems like every time the younger employees are there it’s like you don’t get the same service

First the grilled chicken was seasoned very well. As for the Okra Soup with the FuFu , it sit well with me! I took off some stars because of FuFu and we sense a little attitude when asking questions about the menu but The chicken was seasoned so good, we’ll go back just for that.

Yelp
My wife and I wanted something different. My stepson was also wanting something different as well. We decided on African food because we wanted to try Fufu. We arrived to Nema's to find it was in an unfavorable area. Nevertheless, we still decided to try the food. On this particular day, they did not offer FuFu so we decided on lamb, cabbage, Jill of rice and vegetables. It took a while to receive our food because they had to cook more lamb. After waiting 30 minutes, we finally received our food and took it home. There was a mound of jollof rice for each plate with lamb on top and a sheet or so of cabbage and several cut carrots. The jollof rice was flavorful but the lamb was dry. There was not enough vegetables for me, personally. This is one reason I'm giving 2 stars. The other reason is there were family members that came into the restaurant and went straight to the food on the line. I felt this was unprofessional and not a good look for the restaurant. I'd expect them to have someone else prepare the food for them. We may visit again to try the FuFu.

Yelp
Flavor galore. My son thought the fish was burned but it was seared, which is a burned look with flavor. Delectable! The plantain though was given to the dogs. It was tasty but burned. Friendly service.

Yelp
Wowwowwowwow! I'm not familiar with West African cuisine; I'm just always in search of delicious, humble, homemade eats. If you're in the airport area, check out this spot. It doesn't seem like much from the outside, but it is a bustling spot inside. Most people are getting food to carry out, but we ate inside. Go for the daily specials. By the way, chebb = tiny, glutinous, chubby and deliciously flavored rice. I made the mistake (or perhaps not) of ordering sides with the daily special, which is a ton of food. Got the cabbage and the plantains-both delicious. The plantains are crispy and not flimsy. Delicious food. Definitely will be back to try other dishes. One star off because everything comes in styrofoam...

Yelp
The peppa was good, the service is friendly and quick, if I went back would get okra instead of egusi, love egusi but this was done different to my taste. Tilapia wasn't bad but flavor little salty for my taste. Won't burn a West African restaurant unless rude but some things were prepared different and you can see I'm an expert in W. African cuisine.

Yelp
There was no other customer in the place. I walked in knowing exactly what I wanted to order. I was greeted by one lady but told someone else would take my order. I stood at the counter for 18 minutes. During that time the counter person was walking back and forth to the kitchen for no apparent reason. During this time she asked and I voiced my order three separate times. All three times she was half speaking to me and half speaking to someone on the phone. She finally walked away to the kitchen and never returned to finish my order. I drove 43 miles round trip specifically to eat at Nema because I was looking for fishball stew. I left with nothing. She had one job to do and failed miserably.

Yelp
Amazing real food, whenever I want some homemade feel food I hit the African spot up. If not Jamaican. I love their cous cous and whole snapper. Their fish pies are to die for. Non frozen, real food. My third time here and again I am pleased with my dish. My husband ordered the stew fish, he love it. Highly recommend.

Yelp
So sad :/ I might try it again because there's really good reviews on the food but mine was lacking so much. I got the fishball stew and it came with rice. The portion size was big! But the rice - idk how you can burn rice when it's coming from a rice cooker but it was burnt. The fish all stew had some cabbage in it. The cabbage was good. But the fish balls themselves. It was a no. They were dry and bready/cake like. And hard on the outside. Oh and the food wasn't hot. It was a little over room temp. Which probably is not up to code :/ so sad.

Yelp
Patronized this restaurant for the first time. Pleasantly surprised by the favor of the Chebb/Benachin Rice. Most African spots in the area struggle with keeping the authentic feel in the dishes. The grilled chicken definitely is not the typical Dibi style but more jerk Still it was not bad. Nema is priced fairly as well. Planning to go back to try other items in the future.

Yelp
The food here is great! Some of my favorites include Chicken Yassa, Domoda( Peanut Butter Stew), grilled lamb, beef patties, ebbeh( spicy seafood dish), okra stew, lamb stew, and benachin. The costumer service is excellent, everybody there is nice. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves tasty and healthy food at an affordable price.
