"Nepenthe is always busy, but with one of the best wine lists in Big Sur, ample seating on their terrace, and stunning ocean views, it’s worth getting all dressed up and coming here after you’ve spent the day hiking or beach bumming. Nepenthe’s menu is short and sweet: choose between one of three steak options, the Jidori half-chicken, the Alaskan halibut, or the diver scallops, and know that you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes. Even for Big Sur, prices are on the high end (think $40-60 for mains), but there’s no better place for a romantic candlelit dinner to follow up the sunset." - team infatuation, allison green

"Perched high atop a peak in the Santa Lucia Mountains, just off the winding route of  California’s coast-hugging Cabrillo Highway, you’ll find a restaurant that provides visitors with a stunning panorama of rocky beaches and rugged oceanside landscape. Nepenthe is far more than a scenic overlook, though, with a history stretching back over half a century and involving the likes of Orson Welles, Elizabeth Taylor, and Henry Miller. Nepenthe was started in 1949 by Bill and Lolly Fassett, who purchased the land from Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth whose intentions to use the property as a vacation home had ultimately come to naught. The restaurant was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Rowan Maiden and was intended to become a seamless component of not only the physical landscape, but also the creative cultural landscape that was integral to life in Big Sur. As artists, writers, musicians, vagabonds, and new age monks moved into the area — attracted by the quietude, physical beauty, and presence of like-minded individuals — Nepenthe became central to this community, providing good food and drink, dancing and revelry. There was even a place to sleep or the possibility of trading work for food, should a person be in need. The restaurant’s name is a reference to Homer’s Odyssey, which described a drug of the same name that banished grief or trouble from a person’s mind. In the context of the restaurant, the name is often translated as “The House of No Sorrow.” Guests of Nepenthe from this era include actress Kim Novak and singer Joan Baez. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton frequented the restaurant while shooting their 1965 film The Sandpiper in Big Sur; the film includes a folk dancing scene that was shot on a sound stage replica of Nepenthe. Henry Miller was a Nepenthe regular from its opening till he moved from Big Sur in 1962 and reportedly played ping pong with Bill Hassett. The restaurant was mentioned in Miller’s 1957 memoir Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch. Nepenthe treats visitors to outdoor rail seating that overlooks Graves Canyon and a fifty-mile stretch of the Pacific coastline. Well-timed arrivals can enjoy a remarkable sunset view while they dine or drink. The redwoods and oaks making up the surrounding forest host a variety of bird species, who carry on playfully throughout the day and have been known to steal crackers and fries from the plates of surprised patrons. Know Before You Go Arrive just before sunset for spectacular views" - Zach Rapport, missdana74, RHyzer, ccesare

Perched on top of the mountain with breathtaking scenery. Choice of cozy indoor seating or airy outdoors. Extremely busy with approximately an hour wait to be seated. This could have been because I was there for lunch on a Sunday, on a holiday weekend. Lunch menu is very limited, which could also translate to easier choice between sandwich and a burger. Very good selection of local and imported wine ranging between $50 and $1,700. Dinner menu offers the same appetizers as lunch with main course being steak, chicken, scallops and halibut. Food and drink is a bit on the pricey end but the view more than makes up for the price. Service was slow, possibly because of how busy it was and also, our server seemed somewhat green. Although, he was a pleasant young chap. Great place to indulge in a bottle of fine wine and enjoy the sunset.

Wow. Amazing views ! One of the coolest experiences I’ve had dining out. Staff was very friendly and sweet and let you linger around to watch the sunset even after you’re done. Food was okay. Not bad but just standard, nothing to blow you out of the water, a bit pricy for what it was. Would 10000 percent recommend coming here.

Edit: Got food poisoning. :( Bad luck, but not a great experience for us. Views and atmosphere is very nice. Staff is nice too. Food is edible, but not the best. For the price and the trek, we were hoping for better. Cool architecture and grounds. I would probably just hit the cafe and enjoy the views there. Lots of pretty birds here!

We love the vibe of this very special place. It's very comfortable and enjoyed the Frank Lloyd Wright feel. The food was delicious! From the fresh beet salad, amazing smoked salmon and creamy cheese to the French dip (generous portion), which was tender and tasty. The best part was the banana cream pie. This was like a banana's foster with a custard filling, not some lazy whipped cream :). We will definitely be coming back as this was our first time ❤️

Google
The food is okay, I would say. Given the price they're asking, it definitely could be further improved. But I also understand that the view and the restaurant's investment are blended into the price. So given the epic view and the fantastic vibe, I still think it is worth 5 stars.

Google
The view, the air and the serenity of the location are the things that make Nepenthe exceptional, however, the food was also great and the service was very friendly and chill - very much fitting to the atmosphere. We've been here many times every time we drive down Big Sur over the years. Each experience breathtaking. Our favorite time is to come before sunset and watch the sun set over the Pacific as we dine. If you come earlier in the day, check out Café Kevah on the lower deck. Sometimes overlooked on the way to it's neighbor restaurant Nepenthe, Café Kevah should not be missed as a great place for a morning coffee, juice and breakfast. The views are breathtaking, the service is very friendly and unassuming, and the made sitting there and soaking it all in all the more enjoyable.

We had a great visit to Nepenthe! We went on a Wednesday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. There was a very short wait, which went quickly. They have a nice seating area to hang out while you wait, with some water to grab! The food menu isn't huge, but the drink menu sure is! We waited a few extra minutes because we requested to sit where the view was the best. The entire staff was quick and super friendly, and the food was pretty good as well!

Google
Breath taking views of the Big Sur coastline. The food and service were amazing. No reservations first come first served. You have to wait for a table. Ordered the burger and shrimp club, and both were good. Extensive wine list, leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the views. There is plenty of outside seating, but you can't order food on the outside terrace, but you get drinks at the bar and bring them out. Order a bottle of wine and enjoy your afternoon.

Anna T.

Yelp
What an exceptional experience we had. The view is obviously the biggest allure to Nepenthe as it has the most fantastic vantage point of Big Sur. However, the staff and the food would have me go back again! We ordered cocktails, which were very expensive so don't be staggered by the price point, keep in mind you are paying tourist prices, looking at about $24 a cocktail. I will say though it was the most incredible lavender gin fizz I've ever had. The food was also great and the staff were very sweet. All in all would love to return.

Yelp
Three stars is a stretch but the views and Henry behind the bar was very knowledgeable and kind. It was recommended by a few people including my husband who'd been there in the past. I was far from impressed. We tried to eat there last time in the area and the restaurant was so inundated with black flies we had to leave. But this was weather related and not the restaurant's fault so gave it a second try. This time we arrived between lunch and dinner service and chose to wait for dinner (last seating of lunch was an option) and we were told we could get an appetizer but once committed to wait found we could only do so while seated at bar despite other seats available. The wine recommendation by Henry was decent thankfully. Then turns out they misprogrammed the buzzer for our reservation so ended up waiting longer and finally had to ask as table upon table of people who arrived after us were seated...views were beautiful however food was just ok - I had them smother my chicken with fresh ground pepper to give it some flavor ($42 for a half chicken that must've been the smallest chicken to have ever lived was nothing to write about despite being recommended by waiter as the better choice of the two pricey birds). Oh and the salad...lettuce with one tomato (what?!) They talked us into dessert (we had planned to go to Big Bear Lodge for their tried and true never to disappoint Beignets) and then, in a never before seen at a restaurant, they served the tasty apple pie cold....a local mentioned it's gone downhill over the years but continues to recommend for the view. For the price you'd think they would invest in nice chairs - it really felt like we were eating in a Cafeteria....just all around disappointing! I really did try!

Lisa T.

Yelp
What can I say about this epic cliffside eatery? Come before dinner and the prices are affordable! We sat overlooking the Pacific and had burgers, fries and berry pie. Warm and competent service as well.

Vicky R.

Yelp
A beautiful restaurant on Route 1. Every seat had a wonderful view. We didn't have to wait too long to get seated and you can just soak in the great views while you wait. The food was pricy which was expected but definitely worth it. I loved the smoked salmon appetizer, it was somewhat like a deconstructed bagel. The French dip sandwich was good as well and came with a delicious side salad

Andrea K.

Yelp
The vibes are amazing but DO NOT BE FOOLED the food is so mid and way overpriced. If you stop by, walk around the deck and maybe buy a drink, this will be a 5 star experience. The minute you wait in line (our wait for lunch for 3 on a random Wednesday was 45 minutes) and then order food and then eat that food and then PAY for that food your experience will go down. I got the French Dip sandwich which was $30 and was so tiny I could've eaten the whole thing in 6 bites. Flavors were very one dimensional--it needed some pickled red onions or something crunchy to break the monotony. My friends both got the Ambrosiaburger which was super disappointing and also very tiny. The overall disappointment in the Nepenthe is exacerbated because the drive up and the views and outside ambiance are amazing... this place has no business being a $$$ restaurant. I don't think we'll be coming here again.

Yelp
Come for the drinks and have a bite that you're going to pay a more for the setting and view! No reservations, and that's not Bourdain but their way. Weekends in the summer are surely busy and we waited over 30-45 minutes with a pager for a late lunch on Sat around 2. Downstairs is a cafe but we're glad to have seating, shaded areas, and the upstairs view. Service was excellent and friendly (thanks Laura!). We sat along the edge in a bar countertop outside. Watch for the birds who are scoping out the free fries! They're fast!! Compared to other reviews ... here's my take. Ambrosia burger ($26) with cheese was neither great nor bad and the bread not bun was nice. Add your condiments (poupon and ketchups table side). Fries had a nice crisp! I can see why the blue birds are on the hunt. Caprese ($20) had more cucumbers than tomatoes and good fresh mozzarella with balsamic. Add a beer ($13) and mule ($~20) that was superb I was told. All said, we could just hang out there! Expect to pay the price or just stop for a drink and move on...your call. Don't complain about the overpriced food and drinks, this isn't Michelin star but what did you expect at the side of natural beauty. Everything takes longer to get here, us included. Enjoy!

Yelp
Unparalleled views, amazing service, delicious food with a great wine selection. We stopped by on a sat afternoon after completing an 8 mile hike and were warmly greeted and seated within 15 mins! We enjoyed a bottle of chenin blanc, shared the filet dinner with garlic truffle mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus, and finished with apple pie a la mode. Chefs kiss!! Will definitely come back when I'm up here.

Yelp
Took a drive to Big Sur on a whim, due to the fact that Highway 1 finally opened back up. No plan, no destination; just a drive to see where we ended up. Pure spontaneity, and found this gem. Life is good. This restaurant is a beautiful place to stop. A definite must for the views alone... it is unassuming and nestled into the hillside, overlooking the ocean below. We sat outdoors due to the beautiful sunny day, but indoors also appeared quite lovely with the bay windows to take in the views. Nice menu, and outstanding wine list. A bit pricey, but you are also paying for the prime real estate that yours eyes are taking in. Very worth it in my opinion. Timing was not quite right for a full meal, but we opted to share a few bites. Everything was delicious from the goat cheese appetizer down to the banana cream pie that was the special dessert of the day. Very welcoming atmosphere upon arrival, and excellent service provided by Cassidy. We were sat right away at a beautiful bar top on the outside patio. Found this place simply by stopping at chance, and now adding to our favorites. Cannot wait to return. I disagree with the tourist trap statements of others, but we also visited at an in between meal time.

Yelp
Nepenthe is certainly an iconic restaurant in Big Sur but we were left less than impressed by the views, ambiance and food. We stopped by for a late lunch around 1:45pm on a Thursday hoping that the lunch crowd would have lessened by then and were lucky to be seated right away. For food we got the ambrosiaburger and prime rib french dip sandwiches. Food came out quickly and while the sandwiches were good, they both really needed sauce to add flavor. The burger was nice and juicy but lacked salt and we ended up using the au jus that came with the french dip for both sandwiches to add flavor. And of course, the view and ambiance - the atmosphere is very casual and if you're sitting outside on the patio, there are spots where there aren't umbrellas for shade. The views to be honest are just ok and the trees around the patio block much of the mountains. As we were staying at a resort in Big Sur with much better views we were disappointed by the promise of Nepenthe. Overall we paid over $60 for just 2 sandwiches and very average views and dining setting. Big Sur is pricey all around but I definitely wouldn't wait for a table here and we likely won't be coming back. Perhaps sunset is a better time to come but midday on a hot afternoon was not worth it.

Cindy R.

Yelp
What a beautiful view!! The food options were ok! Only 2 stars! But the view is where it's at! Perfect for drinks and to enjoy the view a bit overpriced and food was just ok for the price! Guess you're paying for the view! Service was excellent!

Shelby W.

Yelp
An amazing experience!!! Wow, this has to be one of my most favorite restaurants I've ever been to simply for how unique it is. It feels like it is a quaint place, that takes you out of California. The views are absolutely spectacular, and every person that we had the pleasure to talk to was beyond kind. We were lucky enough to finish a hike at 11:15, 15 minutes before they opened. We figured we'd head over and there were already people waiting to be seated. We were lucky to get a spot that we were eyeing, and although we only got beer and coffee, it was such an amazing place to sit and relax for a minute. The food around us looked amazing, and we had so many regrets about eating before! I'll remember these views and this experience for a long time. Definitely worth a stop.

Allie G.

Yelp
Nepenthe is one of those iconic restaurants that had been on my list for ages. Since they don't take reservations, our plan was to arrive right at 11:30, when they open for lunch. We walked in at 11:36, and were told it would be a 45 min to 1 hour wait, which means you really need to get there before opening to secure a table. They gave us a buzzer, and we were able to explore the Phoenix Shop in the meantime. We were seated after about 50 minutes at an indoor table, since the patio was closed. The ambiance was casual and cozy, and I loved the indoor fire pit. The views really were beautiful, even with the fog. I ordered a Super Cider (without the rum), which was tasty and nice for a cold day. For food, I got the The Famous Ambosiaburger with cheddar cheese. It came with a choice of garbanzo-kidney bean salad, crunchy coleslaw or tossed green salad, and I chose the green salad with blue cheese dressing. The burger was very juicy and filling, and somewhat messy to eat. It did hit the spot though. We also got a Basket of French Fries for the table, which was absolutely massive - way too much for the three of us. The texture of the fries was perfect though. Service was quick and decently friendly, and we definitely did not leave hungry. Not sure if I would brave the wait time in the future, but it was worth the visit!

Yelp
Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur is a gem that shines as brightly as the breathtaking views it offers. From the moment you arrive, the beauty of the surroundings sets the stage for an exceptional dining experience--and the food delivers in every way. The Ambrosia Hamburger is aptly named. A thick, juicy patty cooked to perfection, it's a mouthwatering blend of flavors that left me savoring every bite. The balance of savory beef with fresh, crisp toppings and that signature sauce is nothing short of divine. This is a burger that truly lives up to the legend of Nepenthe. The Special Turkey Club is a masterpiece in its own right. Layered with tender turkey, crispy bacon, and fresh vegetables, all nestled between slices of perfectly toasted bread, it's the kind of sandwich that redefines what a club sandwich should be. Every bite was a perfect blend of textures and flavors--simple yet elevated. For something on the lighter side, the Caprese Salad is a must-try. Fresh mozzarella, juicy tomatoes, thinly sliced onions, and fragrant micro basil are drizzled with just the right amount of balsamic glaze. It's a simple dish that lets the quality of the ingredients shine, making for a refreshing and satisfying start to the meal. No visit to Nepenthe is complete without indulging in the French fry baskets. These crispy, golden fries are the perfect side to any dish. We originally received the garlic ranch dressing with a side salad, but it was so delicious we had to ask for more to pair with the fries. Creamy, garlicky, and utterly addictive, it's the kind of dip that takes those fries to the next level. The service was great--attentive and welcoming, adding to the overall experience. As I enjoyed each bite, I couldn't help but hear the words of Chef Gusteau echoing in my mind: "Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell." At Nepenthe, every note was pitch-perfect, and every color, vibrant. It's the kind of place that would make even Gusteau proud.

Yelp
Beautiful views! Great food and amazing service our hostess was so nice and very accommodating, Alicia our server had great recommendations and was so sweet! We were here on vacation and had the best time. Will be back when we are in the area.

Alyson S.

Yelp
Gorgeous views, great service and amazing food! Small menu, but something to please even my sensitive stomach. What a beautiful place to enjoy a cocktail and/or lunch with a view. The gift shop on site is also perfect to pick up some souvenirs. It was a great way you end our day trip and drive to Big Sur.

Sarah H.

Yelp
A must stop driving around Big Sur, even just for the view! Perfect place to just grab a drink and check out the view on a Highway 1 road trip like we did!

Johanna G.

Yelp
The views are gorgeous! Best views in Big Sur. We didn't eat there because the wait list was long and he were driving to Yosemite. They have a nice cafe on the side and we got hot chocolate for the kids and wine for us. They also have a nice craft gift shop with fashioned souvenirs. It is definitely a MUST DO when you are in the area.

Ziad A.

Yelp
The location is beautiful hands down, amazing outdoor seating with heater options too. Good indoor seating too. The food options are very limited thats a negative, we went for lunch and the menu was limited. Way more drinks available than food options (i dont drink alcohol), The service was good and helpful no doubt. Also this place is pricey as heck for limited food options. Basket of fries was like $14... Drove by this place for like 10 years and went inside today, but prolly last time cuz not much to eat (also since i only eat halal meat too , veggie options were limited. We did try the salmon and the quantity was so little Pink lemonade wasnt that great tbh either. The shrimp was unfortunately mixed with bacon so couldnt order that. Recommendations: have shrimp option without mixing with bacon, maybe get some of the meats from Australia or new zealand from restaurant depot as options for steaks and burgers etc. and also have bfast option as well

Grace P.

Yelp
You're definitely here for the view! The view is INCREDIBLE and honestly, one of the only restaurants along Highway 1 where you can enjoy it. The food is okay! My partner and I both got ambrosiaburgers and we were not disappointed, but not amazed either. The staff is super friendly. Expect a wait, but you're waiting in paradise (and can get drinks at the bar!) so it's not a huge deal.

Yelp R.

Yelp
Great view, 5 star view without a doubt. If I were to judge by the view and service, it's easily a 5 star. The down side is that the food is of low quality. The food doesn't match it's price, but then again, I believe that you go to this place for the VIEW and not the actual food.

Sayra E.

Yelp
Dined twice at our weekend trip in Big Sur from Friday - Tuesday. We had a small wedding ceremony and decided to come here for dinner on a Monday night! The staff was great and accommodating. We were a party of 13 and everyone was satisfied with the service & food! Most of us ordered the steak frites, or the chicken & mash potato and everything was cooked to perfection. You really come here for the views. The views from the restaurant are absolutely breathtaking! If you enjoy drinking wine, I also recommend coming!

Jacob F.

Yelp
We came here in November 2023 and I'm just getting around to write my review. A friend recommended we drive down here for dinner while on our vacation in Monterey and it was so worth it. For one the drive is gorgeous. Parking is a bit tight but just be patient and something will open up. The food and drinks are great we got a burger and fries and split a glass of wine. Service was very good and we had to wait a while but there's plenty of great views to walk around and see so that's no problem. And of course the view! I don't think there's any better seating in the world. Bring some friends or a good book and watch the sunset it's a once in a lifetime type of thing! After dinner we wandered down to the shop below and loved that too we bought a puzzle we love and had a fun time just perusing all the different items. A great place to visit and a must stop for anyone on a road trip in the area.

Keila P.

Yelp
Popular spot for the area, lovely view and quick service. There was already a queue when we walked up before they opened but they work quickly here. Ambiance is great for socializing and I really liked the garlic and goat cheese appetizers. Thank you!

Tony C.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to trying this place after seeing so many good reviews. So we made a special trip to check it out. The place looked amazing. Beautiful location, phenomenal views and a nice open feel with lots of outdoor seating. We go there and was told there was a 20 minute wait but we got after about ten minutes. That's about the end of the good stuff. We waited about another ten minutes to have a waitress come by and we immediately gave our order for their special Ambrosia Burger medium well, with a side of fries, and a couple of diet cokes. After another 20+minutes our burger came out, undercooked and without the fries. My wife and I split the burger which was pretty tasty and the coleslaw was good, but the fries weren't there. We were told they were coming soon. So I asked for a refill of my Diet Coke. The server said there are no refills but she could bring another one for an additional $4. WTF??? I can understand that I have to pay $24 for a cheeseburger but $4 for a 20 ounce glass of soda? Then I checked the menu. $7.25 for an iced tea! Are you kidding me? Don't go here thirsty! Well, I drank the water (thank goodness they didn't charge for that!) And we finally got our side of fries- 15 minutes after we finished the burger. This could have easily been a five star review but take off one for the cost of cokes, one for the undercooked meat and one for fries being delivered after we were finished eating. It's a 2

Yelp
I decided to check out Nepenthe for my friend's birthday, hoping to treat her to somewhere nice and special with a great view. The ocean and mountain scenery were truly breathtaking, and the ambiance was fantastic. Although they don't take reservations, they were able to accommodate our table of 5 when we walked in. We requested a table with a view, but were told it would be a 45-minute wait. Strangely, there were open tables with a view, but we were told, "we aren't seating anyone at those specific tables today." This was odd, especially since people were seated right next to them and the hostess gave no explanation. We settled for the table we were given. Our server was excellent, promptly taking our orders, informing us of the specials, and bringing out our drinks and salads. However, the salad was underwhelming--a simple spring mix with one cherry tomato and blue cheese vinaigrette. For an upscale, pricey restaurant, I expected more than something I could whip up at home in under 3 minutes. I ordered the Nepenthe Steak with garlic mashed potatoes, portobello mushrooms, and blue cheese. The steak was just okay, nothing special. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box, and the mushrooms felt out of place. While I finished my meal, it was far from memorable. Worse, I experienced intense stomach pain shortly after and spent over 20 minutes in the bathroom, vomiting the entire meal. My friend's Ambrosia burger with fries was no better--the fries were cold, and the burger was mediocre. Overall, we won't be returning to Nepenthe. The food and drinks were overpriced and overrated. After driving over 4 hours to dine here and hoping for an amazing birthday celebration, I was deeply disappointed.

Joy F.

Yelp
View is not to be missed. Gorgeous winter day with the sun out and no fog - got lucky!! Got there right after it opened on a Sunday, and there were still plenty of seats both inside and out. The infamous Ambrosia burger is what most of our party got. The price has gone over the years, but that is to be expected. Still good. With a basket of fries and homemade ranch, such perfect pairing. The view never gets old nor does burger. 'Til next time, Nepenthe. Our server was also wonderful. Almost forgot we got the decadent 4 layer cake with ganache made in house. Yummy!

Jen D.

Yelp
Food is decent, nothing extraordinary. Service was great! The place is typically crowded. Popular with tourists and some locals. This place, with bigger outdoor dining area than indoor, has breathtaking view. I'm curious how it is to eat here in the winter time as I've only gone here in the summer time.

Juliann T.

Yelp
You come for the view, sadly It was a bit overcast when we came But luckily, I have been before so know just how amazing the view is. The burger was good, and service was very attentive.

Jamie Heewon L.

Yelp
This place has a truly breathtaking view. As soon as we arrived, the food honestly didn't matter. The view was so majestic and beautiful that it was worth every penny just to experience it. But surprisingly the food was pretty good (especially their speial burger) and the service was incredibly friendly too. A must-visit if you are in the area!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Pains me to write this but - aside from the view this place was just OK! The food was average (my husband thought worse of it than I did) and overall it was an expensive disappointment. We got the goat cheese app, burgers and the pie for dessert (it tasted store bought!) The only good item was the fries :/ Dont think we'll be back.

Jennifer V.

Yelp
You must go here for the experience alone. If you're able to, grab a seat outdoors under the umbrellas. My husband and I arrived around 12 on a Sunday. It was already busy, but not packed. Luckily, we were seated right away. The view is SPECTACULAR in this beautiful restaurant. It's a wonderful place to stop along the drive on highway 1 for a casual lunch. Full disclosure, the food is ridiculously expensive for mediocre fare. The sodas are also priced PER cup without refills. We ordered their famous ambrosia sandwich, shrimp BLT with the three bean salad and the garden salad. If you're a fan of blue cheese, try the blue cheese vinaigrette. Fries are not an option as a side, so we ordered a half basket, which was plenty. Because fries with a view just hits differently! The food was good but not worth the price point. You are definitely paying for the entire experience of Nepenthe. You also have to consider how they get goods to that location. It's quite a trek so it's not a huge surprise the prices are so inflated. Our server was also super friendly even though service was a bit slow and our drinks remained empty for a while. We had to ask for refills on water and order another soda. I still highly recommend a visit here! There's also a cafe on site opened for breakfast options if you'd rather have that. Don't forget to check out the cute little shop (Phoenix) on site as well. We loved our experience here and am already planning our next trip.

Yelp
Nepenthe is strategically situated on the PCH highway overlooking the ocean. This place is well known for the amazing views out from the patio (as evidenced by the photos posted online) and it should come as no surprise that this garners attention from people everywhere, me included, lol! This restaurant has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, but my recommendation would definitely be to grab a seat outdoors because the views are just captivating. The endless stretch of ocean gives a sense of calm and rejuvenates your mind. Let's talk about the food since this is a sit down restaurant at the end of the day; they have the usual american menu and for drinks they offer a blend of expensive, market available wines along with local wine selection. We had a couple of burgers and fries and tried some of their local wines. The wine was fantastic, the food tasted good, nothing out of the ordinary, the portion size was plenty but the prices were on the higher end of the spectrum. I'd recommend booking a reservation since the wait times can be long, expecially if you're short on time. We had to wait for about 45 minutes or so and they suggested us to try out the gift shop downstairs to pass time. They have an outdoor patio area to click pictures and check out the views with a drink (all of this can be done before you are seated if you don't want to visit the gift shop). Nepenthe scores big for the terrific views it offers. Usually places like these underperform in terms of food and drinks but this restaurant delivers on that front, albeit it doesn't score that highly. Overall, I have no hesitation to recommend this place to anyone wanting to enjoy their time with their companion or family & friends.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I've re-reviewed Nepenthe. Not much has changed when it comes to the business of the restaurant on weekends but my experience was total opposite of the last time I posted a review. The service was outstanding. I didn't go with my gal group this time. I was with my husband and son. The server was just so sweet. We did have a wait but it was about 30 minutes and not chaotic as it was in the past. Everything we ate was marvelous. On a whim we ordered the banana creme pie at the recommendation of our server. We aren't really fans of that type of dessert but that slice of pie was out of this world good. I look forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Very lovely wait stafff. Intense and beautiful views. Very small menu and the food is ok. You are paying for the view. Had the veggie burger and bean salad. Was not bad. Enjoy the vibes.

Yelp
Great dinner spot for the views and vibes!! Food was average/so so but the place is worth the stop. You are right over the ocean and get to enjoy the sunset, ambiance dark lighting with candles and a super friendly staff. It's one of the better spots to eat just because of the view sitting right off the coast. Outdoor seating had better views but inside also was a beaut.

Yelp
Service:9/10 Curry apple soup so good . Green salad simple yet fresh crisp. View:10/10

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday 2pm and the wait was insane (30-40mins) given how big the place is. But I get it, the place has a killer view. Menu was somehow limited but food was very generously portioned.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous view! We had a 40 min wait, however we were able to grab a drink from the bartender who graciously suggested the open view seating outside while we wait. The ocean through the trees was phenomenal. After enjoying the sun, view, and drinks we were able to check out the gift shop downstairs. We were then sat behind the host stand, which is a little less appealing, however the waitress was knowledgeable and friendly and the food was delightful. We were impressed with the flavor every dish!! It was on the expensive side, however totally worth it. The grilled chicken blew my mind!! Melted cheese, seasoned sauces, roasted flavors. Bread was soft and crisp. My mouth is watering writing this review. The burger was juicy and satisfying. We added a 1/2 side of fries to share between 4 people and it was perfect. 100% would go again

Yelp
Great views , great customer service, massive wait times for an ok food experience (exorbitant prices in the name of beautiful views) and a few scrub jays trying to grab a bite or two from your plate quite sums up our visit to Nepenthe. Parking can be a tough one though we got lucky as when we got into the parking lot there was someone who was about to head out and we got their spot right after their exit. Climbing a couple of flights of stairs we got to the welcome desk where they took our details and gave us a restaurant pager and informed us that we were probably looking at around 40-45 minutes of wait time which got increased to about an hour or more as we requested to be seated in the section that's close to the perimeter facing the ocean. We ordered a coffee in the meanwhile which was just ok for the price that was paid for the same. Finally after a grueling wait, the pager started buzzing and we got seated in the section that we had requested for. The hosts/server were great. Shoutout to Ben (Benjamin) who served our table and did a wonderful job in letting us know the chef's special and as well about the items that we eventually ordered. He was prompt in his service and definitely made sure that our questions/asks were answered. Coming to the food we ordered a vegetarian burger and a Beet salad. The burger was decent though nowhere near good. The only thing good that stood about it was the veggie patty. The beat salad was overly sprinkled with candied walnuts and was just average when it came to taste. We definitely enjoyed the views and had a few run ins with the scrub jays trying to steal food from our and neighbor's plate though that seemed to be one thing that could be guaranteed while choosing one of those prime spots up close to the perimeter.

Yelp
To be honest the food was average and the menu was pretty limited, but clearly the star of the show here is the view. It truly can't be beat, worth a visit for view alone. All that said, if I'm ever in the area again I will return.

Yelp
To be so honest i was not expecting the best food for such a fantastic view, however the ambrosia burger was down in like a minute flat. It was incredible! Almost as incredible as our service from Avalon and Adrian. Avalon made sure we had plenty of sun and helped us celebrate our birthdays while Adrian offered fantastic recommendations and great conversation. My mother and I will certainly be back to big sur, if for nothing else than to come back to nepenthe We also had their specialty soup of celery root, apple, and some other yummy ingredients along with some roasted garlic and goat cheese with crostini. Everything was delicious!!

Yelp
Come for the ambience!! The service was great and the views were absolutely stunning but the food was 6/10

Yelp
Incredible views. Friendly staff. Burger is simple but so flavorful. For anyone who has been debating going, just go. I will 100% be returning. Ordered medium and it was cooked with a little pink, exactly what I want. Cousin opted for medium well and there was no pink. I wish they had a little more of a selection of wines by the glass, but the bottle selection was insane.

Yelp
The spot for this place is amazing. The view alone is worth you stopping by to enjoy their drinks and food. Service was ok...we stopped by on a Monday and was really busy so maybe it is just a busy season. Their menu has a good amount of options and they also offer a kids menu and desserts. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Pretty laid back spot, great stop if you are visiting big sur.

Yelp
We'll this is still the hottest tourist location. Props for great views of the Pacific Ocean. I highly recommend their back patio area. It is away from most of the public and great views of humpbacks in the ocean. Nepenthe is know for their ambrosia burger and I highly recommend getting it medium a rare and a half basket of fries. They have a great wine list and several beers on draft. Our waitress was attentive and let us know to take our time and chill and enjoy the beauty weather. Ambrosia burger is at market rate ($25) as of 2023, the cocktail menu looked like something I would need in future. The views are amazing and I would recommend sitting outside. If you're on a budget, check out Cafe Kevah, located a level down from the main restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the view and the food. The goat cheese and garlic with crackers was perfect. We also really enjoyed our caprese salad. If you order a pot of tea, you get free hot water refills, highly recommend. I think we got a good 6 cups of tea out of our pot with full flavor, we did the gunpowder green. The wait was about 10 minutes on Friday afternoon, they'll take your name and give you a buzzer. The bar was open seating if we didn't feel like waiting. Our servers were nice and our food came out fast.

Yelp
We went to Nepenthe for lunch. We were seated with a view of the ocean, 10/10 view while enjoying lunch but you can get similar views all along the big sur coast. The food was definitely overpriced, as expected. The beef and barley soup (2.7/5.0) was good, nothing too special . The Famous Ambrosiaburger (3.9/5.0) bread had the perfect amount of crispyness while still being soft on the inside, the flavor was good but had to add ketchup. I chose the garbanzo-kidney bean salad (3.8/5.0) as the side which paired well with the burger and was well seasoned. The Caprese salad (2.5/5.0) had cucumber and tomatoes that were not bite sized which made it semi-awkward to eat different ingredients together. The flavor was also bland. Overall, we didn't think it was worth the price but it was worth the experience of being inside a giant tree house by the coast. It was a basic burger for $25 dollars which wasn't very filling. The menu is very limited. The food took ~40 minutes, which was admittedly longer than it took for some of the other people who where seated later than us but received their food before us.

Yelp
This restaurant is a serious gem and a MUST STOP on this road. It's like a tree house in Neverland but with a bar and great food attached. We arrived at about 1pm on a Friday (weekend before Christmas 2023) and there was a short wait only about 20 minutes but the waiting areas seating and views were worth any wait - especially since we could get drinks at the full bar. The landscaping is unreal and the food and service is awesome to match. This place is amazing but watch the birds if you're eating outside!
