The food is wonderful. The prices are very good. But a group of extremely loud chinese speakers create a very noisy atmosphere, which make it difficult for costumers who want to talk among themselves. We like this restaurant but we might never come back and we do not recommend it.

Worth waiting to get in! Very nice servers and very delicious food. We had the cold sesame noodles - an Upper West Side specialty - & the green onion pancakes, cashew chicken, tofu w brown sauce & Chinese broccoli, shrimp dumplings - all extremely tasty.

We visited New Cottage on our first night in NYC last week. The food, the service and the atmosphere were all top class. We thoroughly enjoyed the recommendations from our server and the experience as a whole. Fabulous, authentic food from start to finish.

The shredded pork with dried bean curd lunch special ($12.95 plus tax) had julienned celery which contrasted nicely with the bean curd. The steamed roast pork bun ($6.95) was ok. The corner location of New Cottage lets in lots of light, which is the best feature of its rather plain interior.

The meals were pretty underwhelming for me and my friends . It’s also more pricey than your average Chinese restaurant. I won’t really be coming back but the food was definitely fresh . Vegetables was not on the house as well. I’ll give the shrimp dumplings a 5/5 because it was fresh ! My House special lo mein was not wow, neither was my friend’s fried curry fish. It was a 2.8/5 experience

THE FOOD HERE IS PHENOMENAL!! It was so good I came here 3 days in a row to try their lunch specials and also their chef specials. Prices were affordable with quick and great customer service. Hands down one of my favorite traditional Chinese restaurants, let alone just the UWS. Their Szechuan style shrimp dumplings were so good I could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner. Everything I tasted here was so flavorful and not just another Chinese restaurant who overly salts their food. They also had outdoor seating which was great for me and my pup. Overall, there are many options for different taste palettes as well. I will definitely be back again.

The food here is delicious. Authentic Chinese food and very well priced. The service was great and the food was served quickly. Would highly recommend!

I was highly disappointed!! My girlfriend and I are a lesbian latina couple. As soon as we entered the restaurant we were completely ignored while waiting to be seated. Then the service was terrible, they were blatantly treating the other customers with so much attention and respect but was rude and dismissive to us as if we weren’t even there. The food was tasteless. We had to ask for our drinks to be refilled while other tables were actively getting refills. The servers were so friendly to everyone else. They didn’t even give us fortune cookies with our check which all the other tables got. They also left out the rice when packing our to go food. My partner and I worked is service for many years so being treated so poorly made us feel very bad. If you’re queer and/or POC, avoid this place! Also very pricey.

My good friend Jasmine introduced me to New Cottage and told me it was her favorite Chinese Restaurant. I know that she has always given really good recommendations and I trust her judgment so I went with her for lunch. Ever since then, I went with her whenever we were both available and in the mood. Most recently, I came with all of my girlfriends and we ordered a lot of food for the table to share. They were really great about one of my friends bringing her service dog into the restaurant and I know that can be hard sometimes. The food was really good and I enjoyed my meal. They know my friend at the restaurant because she's a frequent customer and she always goes with her mom. I'm surprised that I don't come in to order more often too because the food and the service is so good.

Had dinner there last night. Ordered several appetizers and two entrees to split between 2 people. The food was just ok, but would recommend not bother to get the orange beef since it was mostly barer and little beef.

The food is so Americanized that to call it a SZECHUAN restaurant is amusing. The dumplings in sesame and chili had no chili, the Maloney no Szechuan pepper or chili, only some fermented black beans. Whoever said this hits all marks has never had good Chinese food.

Fantastic! The food was so fresh and well prepared. Great flavor! Highly recommend the shrimp dumplings, pea shoots, szechuan shrimp and cumin beef. Can't wait to return!!!

This was my first time at a Chinese restaurant on the upper west side. New Cottage is a tiny level up from your usual Chinese take out restaurant. It wasn't bad and it wasn't really good either. The eggplant with garlic sauce was literally just eggplant, no scallions or tasty garnish..just plain ole eggplant and garlic sauce that didn't have that garlic taste. The spicy diced chicken wasn't spicy, it was rather just very salty as if the chicken was soaked in salt overnight! It's okay but I wouldn't go back. Very simple, basic meals. It was busy for a Thursday lunch period. It's mediocre Chinese food with tables, a wait staff and tables with white tablecloth pleasing for the upper west side I suppose.

New Cottage is much better than it has any right to be. It's a humble establishment, but they put out really incredible food. They just get all the little things so right in ways you wouldn't expect from a Chinese restaurant in the upper west side, especially at a reasonable price point. It's hard to go wrong with the appetizers. The peanut sauce dumplings are spectacular (keep the sauce to soak up with your rice later). If you like to start with soup, a cup of the corn and egg drop soup is always welcome. We always order it and frequently pick it up to-go on chilly evenings. Feel like ordering a sauteed vegetable, like bok choi? They might tell you that the snow pea leaves are particularly good that day, and to get that instead. They'll be right - whatever they recommend will be particularly fresh and clear-flavored, with a burst of garlic to go with the bright flavor of the vegetable. Dishes out of the wok are generally terrific (like the beef with long peppers or scallion), with real wok char flavor while avoiding excessive grease. They also do things well beyond the classic dishes, like the cumin fish filet: powerfully spicy and cracklingly crisp, with a cumin taste that fills your mouth with a pleasurable burn. We've ventured around the menu a fair bit and found very few things we wouldn't repeat. On top of the food and the helpful, friendly service, the ambience is awesome. It really feels like a linchpin of the neighborhood dining scene. It's full a lot, but never seems uncomfortably loud or crowded. It's warm and welcoming, the kind of place that you could easily see yourself becoming a local at. If you're looking for excellent, unpretentious Chinese food, brought out quickly in a great environment, look no further. It's popular for a reason.

Maybe I'm just totally out of touch with prices. Lunch special was 12.95, so with tax it was $14.10. Portion was the expected small container of the lunch, plus ride and a soup. I get it's a better deal than dinner pricing but it did feel pricey.

If I said to you that I paid four dollars for an egg roll out of a $45 check and the best tasting food on my bill was the egg-roll!! this has got to be the worst Chinese food that I've ever had for the price that I paid for it is absolutely disgusting. I'm not sure why they're busy and I'm not sure why their rating is so high.

My wife and I live in Dallas, TX and come to NYC several times a year for the past 18 years UWS, we have been frequently eating at the old location and now new location of New Cottage, we love the food, fresh and great quality food, always excellent service and they treat us well every time we come in to eat! We look forward to returning soon! Thank you!

Szechuan lovers unite! This spot on the UWS is for us. I came in on a sleepy lunch hour on the weekend. Sadly missed the lunch specials, but got great service as the only one in. Finally enough rice for my order!! I got the Szechuan beef dish and jasmine tea. Perfect amount of heat but they of course had the GOOD chili oil if you needed. Food was great, portions perfect and as it filled up a great ambiance and dining experience. This neighborhood is so lucky to have this spot as a dine and local takeout.

Every time I have something to eat in this restaurant I'm so satisfied. I've been eating at the New Cottage for more then three years and it's always clean and the service is great. Good prices too. I love you eat here.

Try the duck...20 dollars for a 1/2 duck sliced to perfection...they sadly discontinued the Cantonese meats where you could chose from 1-3.. Calm seating looking out to the bustle of UWS Broadway.

Excellent, reasonably priced, large portions. Good service. Clean. Ever tried lotus blossom root? I have!! It's so good!!

We stopped by with some friends for a quick snack and ended up getting: - Szechuan Dumplings $9: very flavorful with an interesting twist of peanut sauce; would definitely recommend as it was a favorite amongst us - Cold noodles with sesame $8: fresh cold noodles with sesame and a hint of peanut as well; pretty appetizing as well - Crispy Fresh Cucumber $8: this appetizer tastes very similar to Din Tai Fung's cucumber salad; would recommend if you like vinegary cucumbers - Crispy Fried Chicken $9: these wings were juicy and crisp and the skin was marinated in curry spices - Cumin seasoned beef with red chili peppers $17: a good portion of beef and veggies dunked in spicy sauce; not overwhelmingly spicy I would definitely recommend this spot for its Szechuan dumplings, crispy fresh cucumbers, and crispy fried chicken for appetizers!

Such a cute and quaint Cantonese restaurant in UWS. The food is absolutely AMAZING. The spicy Sezchuan dumplings are to die for. I also ordered brown rice and sautéed asparagus which I didn't get a picture of because that's how good the food was- I didn't even think twice. After the first bite I dove right in which tells you something. After I finished the dumplings I kept the sauce and dumped my brown rice and sautéed asparagus into the sauce & HONEY LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING... it was EVERYTHINGGG!!! I'm definitely going back. Service was great. The ladies there are funny. Ohhhh & the couple next to me (Ross & Meriden) shared their Lychee dessert... BOMBBB getting that next time too!

The Cottage is the best restaurant for Chinese food on the upper west side and one of the best in the city. The food is consistently fresh, beautifully presented and the service is good whether you are eating in or taking out. The restaurant is comfortable and perfect whether you are eating alone or with others. Love this restaurant.

I ordered sweet and sour chicken..to go..I would have rather thrown $20 in the garbage then to get home and open it..the chicken in strips in a separate container..blaned..tasteless and in a separate container orange sauce..like water with some peppers in it..not thick..so poured it onto the chicken..it was horrible..no reason to eat it ...no reason at all..I threw it out..if this is how they prepare it..unlike any other restaurant I have ever ordered it at which is a lot...they should at least let you know before you order it..I will NEVER order from this place again..which is a shame cause maybe some other dishes are good..if they let me know how it was cooked that would have been a plus..

Excellent Szechuan cuisine prepared by professional staff. This restaurant is the revival of the previous cottage restaurant on Amsterdam Avenue. They are now in their second year at this new location, and the restaurant is very busy every day. All of the dishes are very well prepared and authentic. All of the dumplings are made in house, and all of the food is prepared in house and not brought in frozen The revival of an institution !

This restaurant just opened on the corner of 78th and Broadway. We'd been looking for a good casual Chinese spot in the neighborhood, so we're thrilled to have this awesome addition. We ordered the following for a dinner for 2: - 2 Egg Rolls ($6.00+) - Large Wonton Soup ($6.50+) - Shrimp Lo Mein ($12.00+) - General Tso Chicken ($16.00+) We enjoyed everything we ordered, especially the Wonton Soup. It had great flavor and came with plenty of crispy wonton strips, which we loved. Until Nov 15, they are offering 20% off for dine-in and take-out, so I recommend you give it a try :)

Ordered delivery 1st time. It was really good. Went back a few days later and had lunch on the terrace. Excellent food and service. Prices are reasonable for the neighborhood.

Alright Chinese food. Seating and service are good. Dishes are on the expensive side for takeout quality food. Soups are worth it- especially the hot and sour soup. Beef and broccoli was good but pricey, not sure if we'd get it again. GET THE SZECHUAN DUMPLINGS. I've never had dumplings like that. Super saucy, peanut buttery, and absolutely my comfort food.

Really enjoyed! We got pork dumplings, sesame chicken, and beef lo mein, all of which were flavorful and cooked well. So glad to have found a new go-to spot in the neighborhood!

Ordering dinner here has become a weekly ritual. So far I have only gotten the spicy stir fried shrimp and the Chinese broccoli and it's a symphony of flavors and textures and I look forward to it. Like clockwork. I call and it's ready in 10 minutes. Absolute GO TO. A+++

As soon as I finished eating, I felt like I was having a heart attack. Four hours of dizziness, almost passing out, heart palpitations...had to be MSG

One year ago I gave this place a 5 star review. This evening I ordered my usual - dumplings, green beans and lo mein chicken. And it all felt tired and old and sad. And afterwards I felt ill. I'm so sad to see and taste just a drastic decline in this place. What happened ? Why ? Really upsetting.

Great and delightful food. The restaurant just opened a few days ago, but already drew large crowds! I have passed by several times after work, and they have always been busy, even on a rainy day ! I went there for lunch today and ordered two appetizers: Szechuan Style Shrimp Dumplings with Peanut Butter Sauce (medium $9) & Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce($8), because they seemed like their most popular appetizers, so I gave them a try. And..... the dumplings were fantastically DELICIOUS (love the combination of spicy oil with peanut butter sauce), the cold noodles were very refreshing and tasty! Highly recommend ! Definitely will go again !

A very good Chinese food restaurant with a server who is talented at up selling you on wonderful dishes. We had a great appetizer based upon her recommendation. The food was wonderful. We had vegetable fried rice, shrimp and lobster sauce, sautéed mixed veggies and spicy cumin beef. Each dish was outstanding. The recommended shrimp sczheuan dumplings were worthy of a second trip.

I was super excited to have them back. Finally Chinese food is back and better but pricier! I ordered several dishes taking advantage of the 20% promo (this review is delayed). I definitely saw an improvement. The wonton soup had bean sprouts and I think spinach added. There pork fried rice used to be the worst, just pork and rice, and now they have egg and veggies added, as it should be served. Wasn't too much of a fan of the beef dish. Beef is always hit or miss at Chinese food restaurants. The only thing that's going to keep me from ordering often are the prices. They are definitely higher than before and higher than any other Chinese food I order. The prices with the 20% off are what we should pay normally.

I ordered 2 dishes to go, a crispy orange beef and shrimp with mixed vegetables. The service was courteous and it did not take long for the orders to come out. The shrimp were plump and fresh. The negatives are the vegetables were mostly wilted greens and the shrimp were in a brown sauce. My favorite eastside Chinese presents this dish with brightly colored pea pods, bok choy, carrots, corn, etc. in a white sauce. Much more appetizing and delicious. Hence, we were not impressed with this dish from New Cottage. Same for the little thin strips of beef in the crispy orange beef. At my east side Chinese, this dish consists of large chunks of steak with much more orange flavor and heat (spice). One last complaint, I had to purchase dinner portions which looked more like lunch sizes. My eastside Chinese has made dishes in lunch size portions even if not on the lunch menu. I gave 2 stars to New Cottage for the polite efficient service. Perhaps other items on their menu are better but based on the 2 items I purchased, I will not return.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while and am so glad I finally did. I live in the low 60s so not super close and had never seen them on any of the delivery apps. On a recent rainy evening I actually picked up the phone and called New Cottage (I know... right?!) and learned THEY DO OFFER DELIVERY. The friendly staff member helped me place my order over the phone, accepted my credit card for payment/tip, and my delivery was at my door in like 20 min. Most importantly, this was the freshest and most delicious Chinese takeout I've had on the UWS and I've lived here for over 10 years. tldr; you have to call for delivery but it's totally worth it. Do it.

If you were expecting a rebirth, unchanged, of the original Cottage in this new incarnation, you will be severely disappointed. While the ambience is brighter, the chefs here have missed the boat on flavor and pricing. On a recent afternoon, the scallion pancakes were soggy and tasteless, the sesame chicken was tough and buried in a sauce that defied definition, and a pot of tea now is a chargeable beverage instead of being a complimentary addition as it had been in the past. There is no reason to patronize this establishment--even the luncheon specials no longer are priced anything approaching special. Unless they up their game soon, go elsewhere.

Let me start by saying that La Caridad, the previous restaurant in this space, was one of my all-time favorite establishments. My nephew lived next door in the Apthorp for many years and we ate countless meals there together over the years. Of all the places in NY that closed due to the pandemic, La Caridad was probably the one that hit closest to home for me. Anyway, after a long walk around the park with the aforementioned nephew, we finally got around to trying this new place. He's a strict vegan so when we dine together, I become a vegan as well so we can share everything. The walk must've made us even hungrier than usual because we ordered a lot of food for a party of two- a few veggie dumplings, some noodles, different types of tofu. I admit that I might be evaluating this place more harshly because of its location, but while there was certainly nothing that was off-putting or unenjoyable, the food on the whole was very nondescript. I found the dumplings in particular to be disappointing. The staff were very nice- welcoming, friendly, and very attentive. The space itself has also been rearranged and spruced up (La Caridad wasn't going to win any beauty contests). My nephew wasn't too enamored with the sappy sounds of Delilah that were playing, but I'm a romantic at heart so they didn't bother me. On the whole, it's not a bad addition to the neighborhood and your enjoyment will very possibly increase if you don't think too much about what used to be here.

The food here was really amazing. Our expectations were not very high to begin with since we generally don't know what to expect from places offering a blend of cuisine - Cantonese & Szechuan. But, we were genuinely pleased. We had fare from both camps and enjoyed it. We ordered shrimp dumplings, chicken fried rice, pancake, chicken and cashew, and more.

Walked in and ordered takeout. Friendly and pretty fast. 3 regular main dishes (nothing fancy, no seafood, etc) plus 2 egg rolls came to $86 with tip. One main dish tasted fine (hunan beef). One was bland, and the third (sweet and sour chicken) came minus the sauce. So it was bland unseasoned fried chicken with no sauce. Egg rolls were good. I understand that rent is outrageous and food prices are high. But this was a waste of money. My main dish that tasted good was rejected by my body 20 minutes after eating. Enough said. Would not return.

I went to this place just trying to get something quick before a comedy show across the street. the food was delicious,fresh and I couldn't believe how big the prawns were and how many were in the dish. Best of all ... the service!! The people were so warm, friendly and helpful. They were patient and kind as we went over and over what we wanted. I don't frequent the city often but it will definitely be a place I visit when I'm in the area.

We are floodies and this restaurant was delicious. I knew to try it because it was always busy. It was better than we anticipated! Great food and perfect potions.

Very disappointed with my order. Shrinkflation is very obvious here! Beef and broccoli was mostly broccoli and little beef, barely enough for one person. The kicker was, pieces of chicken, with the beef. WHAT don't you clean off the wok between dishes? Or do you store you your beef and chicken together? Gross Scallion Pancake, besides being very basic, were served with a Peanut-butter sauce that spilled all over the pancakes, instead of thea soy sauce and vinegar based dipping sauce. They tasted awful. The worse part is we have a peanut allergy in the house and we're freaking out. Huge mistake!!!!!!! Pan Fried Dumplings had some red meat as filler?? Definitely not pork and it the taste was no enjoyable. Corn soup as very bland. Brown rice was the best of the whole dish. It's so sad that you can't seem to get quality food that is made with care anymore.

I just came in from the cold to discover that my take out wonton soup was sweet and sour which I hate. This is the second time that they have gotten a simple order wrong. They are incompetent and I won't be back.

When you order for delivery over the phone they shake you down for more tip before even providing the food and they may even add a $1 or $2 on their own! They are not on grubhub and I understand from grubhub there is a reason....

Oh My goodness. I just ordered to go to try this place out for the first time. Benny or Bennie (not sure about the spelling) but he was so patient with me with figuring out what I wanted to order. I got the Fishball and wonton noodle soup. It is sooo delicious. Some would say this soup is basic and it is, but it was really flavorful and the dumplings, they were really good! Declared my Chinese go to place has now changed to New Cottage.
