Forget supermarket fish counters, forget tiny "sashimi" cuts from Japanese markets at $36/lb, and forget going to Haymarket at 5am. New Deal Fish Market is second only to catching the damn thing yourself. Since going to New Deal a little over a year ago, I am *ruined* on other fish.
It's just so impressively fresh. Their usual selection includes two kinds of salmon, maguro tuna, swordfish, snapper, branzino (a bass), sole, skate, smelts, mussels, cherrystones, crab, shrimp, periwinkle, lobster and squid. However, the selection changes every day (as do the hand-drawn window signs and price list) as does the selection of fish from the docks. Sometimes I'll ask for a fish and they'll say, "Ahh, it didn't look so good, so we didn't get any today. We should have more on Thursday," or some variation which I can't argue with.
Some other seafood which makes an appearance includes scup, porgy, bream, stickleback (my new favorite for the grill), toro (fatty tuna belly), yellowfin and hake. There is also salt cod and the best tinned fish I've ever had, most of which is Portuguese. They sell six or seven kinds of olive oil, about the same number of Balsamic vinegars, and many other odds and ends like produce and assorted Portuguese/Japanese goods.
On top of all this, the shop is family operated they will answer any question you may have, suggest fish for you based on how you plan to prepare it, etc. They're great folks and they have the best fish in Boston at great prices. Anyone who buys fish elsewhere is losing!
