Yelp
Whoa! Incredulous, bizarre experience. After I sat down, the owner came over and said in a confrontational way, "I know you. You wrote a Yelp review." Uh-oh, and all I wanted was a quiet, peaceful lunch.
I was lost for a moment. He said, "You said Indians like cash." {Benefit of doubt: The things that were said to me perhaps don't register here as being offensive and inappropriate. Like his parting shot when I tried to pay for my lunch, "I don't want your money." Most people would take that as an insult. A lot of things were said that in today's world would be labelled with incendiary, often political descriptors. I hope what I experienced today is not what the owner(s) think of their customers and our society at large.}
WTF????? I indicated I was leaving and made clear that I would never make such a remark. Then he said something like, "It was about your credit card."
Then I recalled and blurted out, "That was 5 years ago." Didn't faze him in the least. He needed to show me how wrong I was 6 + (as it turns out) years ago. He repeated the slur about Indians. I got up and thought best to go, but then asked him if he thought people think that or maybe it was his thinking (projection), and shook his hand and asked if he intended to poison me. I filled a buffet plate at his asking.
I looked up the review and called him over. He read it with care and still felt I had said something about the Indian people, which I would never do - just for starters. He eventually said maybe he confused it, but nonetheless still seemed upset with me and clearly unapologetic for either today or years back; unclear the point he was trying to make - maybe to him as well.
I pointed out that I had called my bank for him unnecessarily and he had said she was lying. He said today, not you lying, the bank! I said that he said the woman at my credit card company was a liar.
Then he began to explain why he was right - now understand, it's 6 years later!!!! - and he still thinks she was lying even though my card went through. Yikes! What was the point he was trying to make? And much more so, why????
He then harped on the fact that I said he had embarrassed me by yelling across the restaurant from his machine many times, while now he was still trying to pretend that none of this happened or he was somehow justified then. But what about today's behavior?
Double Yikes! What was I doing here?, I thought. This is too f-in weird to have happened - again; 6 years - nearly 7 - later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do yourself and the owner a favor if you are a discerning diner and sensible person. Go to Akbar, Divani, Taj, Tadoor-A or many other choices. I know great food in and around Beverly Hills, too.
BTW - If you read my old reviews you will see that I and my family supported this place for many years. And you could read the review about him trying to reject my credit card, not realizing even today that his behavior was wrong then and even more wrong today. How can you own a restaurant and behave this way? And now, I know a bit about Indian food; this is quite ordinary stuff, if not better labeled 'Americanized Indian style', but palatable mostly. I think one time many years back I became ill.
