Savoring the Flavors of Penang - AFAR

"A bustling nighttime hawker street known for classic local dishes like mee lemak (noodles in a coconut-milk-based curry) and rojak, a fruit-and-vegetable salad dressed with a sweet-and-sour sauce that blends Chinese and Malay ingredients—a fitting culinary conclusion to a visit celebrating the island's cultural diversity." - AFAR

The 17 Best Restaurants in George Town, Malaysia | Eater

"If you only have time to visit one hawker center while in George Town (note: you should make more time), make it Lorong Baru. Both in terms of its spread of dishes and its frenetic, open-air vibe, it’s the epitome of what’s fun and delicious about eating in this city. Standout dishes include otak-otak, fish curry steamed in banana leaf; smokey skewers of satay; char koay kak, rice cakes fried with egg, shrimp, bean sprouts, and chili paste; and chee cheong fun, rice noodle rolls drizzled with a savory shrimp paste-based dressing and sesame seeds. Dinner only. [$ - $$]" - Austin Bush

Good vibes. Great food stalls. It's not a very big one, but the location is central , next to the subway hotel. All the stalls we had tried here were tasty. Great value and clean. The q to the quey two cart was massive and I didn't bother to line up.

Interesting but a tad short lane to try out some of the local iconic dishes. Pick a stall, order their food, sit in the nearby cafe, order a drink or pay up some seating fee. I would suggest go early. Like, 5pm that kind of early. We got our food almost instantly.

Lots of great local food options! Unlike other night markets, almost every 'cart' has a unique specialty, so no redundant food options. Most of the sellers understand and speak english, so it's also tourist-friendly. Best to prepare cash for payment. The only downside for me is there are still cars passing thru within the market.

Tried the charcoal seafood char koay teow, pork satay and the curry mee. Only the curry mee was nice, the others are subpar and quite disappointing. Don’t think I would come here again.

One of our fav go-to place for Penang Char Keow Teow is this New Lane place. They start quite early at 5pm+ until 10pm+. It can be very crowded during peak hours and weekends. The famous Seafood Char Keow Teow always have long queue. We only tried once as we got there just before 5pm+ and was head of the queue! Other times we’re here, we just go for the Char Keow Teow at San Cafe… The other I must eat is the one Popiah stall which also sells Pai Tee. There are many variety of foods and drinks here. However, it’s not easy to get parking or table to sit, especially if you have a big crowd. It’s just that popular!!! 😂

Try this place at June 2025 when we visit George Town, Penang. We planning to look around at George town in the evening with Grab and we find it. Located near Komtar (Komplek Tun Abdul Razak) dan open at evening (maybe from 5 to 10/11 PM). Very easy to find from the crowd it created. We're here at 9 PM and still crowd. Its place very similiar to foodstall at Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur. You can find many variety of asian food such malay, chinese, peranakan etc. Price is very affordable and the place is cozy enough. One of the recommended place at George town Penang.

Nice to take a picture of how street food in Penang is like row and row arranged down the lane with varieties to pick from, grilled to steamed to braised, noodle and rice, proteins and vegetables, and durians too. But touristic place at it's best only for the view, food wise it depends on which stall you order, some good, some mediocre, some unfortunate leaves a bad taste and ruin the day. Rule of thumb… when you see others line up for a stall, don't follow it, no matter your curiosity tells you, it does kill cats
