More Than 1000 Workers at Local Portland Grocery Store Chain New Seasons Market Are on Strike | Eater Portland

"Workers at 11 unionized locations of a local Portland grocery chain are on strike and participating in a work stoppage today, November 27, in response to alleged unfair labor practices and failing to reach a new deal with management. "We have made our best effort to offer the company numerous ways to avert a strike by ceasing their unfair labor practices and offering our members a deal that meets their needs, yet they refuse," says Ava Robins, co-chair of the labor union, in a press release. In a statement, a company spokesperson said, "[The market] staff are the heart of our business, and we respect the NSLU’s right to engage in this protected activity, which is common during collective bargaining. We remain focused on minimizing disruption so we can provide our customers with the service they’ve come to expect." According to the union press release, the strike was prompted by a recent management proposal that allegedly included a "a dismal increase" of 25 cents for new hires, a reduction in holiday pay, and increasing the hours necessary to receive benefits and paid time off from 24 to 30 hours a week; in a prior bargaining session management also allegedly proposed eliminating company-funded health insurance in exchange for a higher wage. The company notes that both parties have met at "mutually agreed-upon times" and have reached 16 tentative agreements, and a spokesperson added, "Throughout the collective bargaining process, our priority has been the well-being of our staff and customers. We remain committed to constructive negotiations, which we believe are the path to resolution." The union is also urging a holiday-season boycott: "We have always had support from our community in our fight for a fair contract, and the number one way that customers can support us now is by refusing to shop at [the market] this holiday season, and joining us on the picket line on Wednesday," says Jimbo Heiner, a chapter representative at the Sellwood location. New Seasons Labor Union, founded in 2022, represents over 1,000 workers across the Portland metro area and is organizing to raise the wage threshold to the living-wage minimum of $27.04 set by the MIT Economics department, push for cost-of-living raises, increased paid time off, permission for cashiers and other workers to sit during their shifts, premium pay for overnight work, and more. Currently the company offers a starting wage of $16.25 an hour, an automatic raise every six months, and benefits eligibility for employees working at least 24 hours per week; the Portland metro minimum wage is $15.95 an hour. In advance of the strike, the union has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board." - Rebecca Roland

Been shopping here for 5 years. Randomly this employee approaches me and insists I need to not use the bag I was shopping with, instead I should be using their awkward dirty carry basket. He wasn’t very kind about it either. I declined. My bag is lighter weight, it is brand new, super cute, new, open, shoppers bag from Hawaii. Wasn’t it yesterday, stores were encouraging us to bring our own bags?? Maybe this location really needs nickels & dimes! Plus it’s sad when someone must feel a lack of control in their own life that they have to exert it on people at work. There are other options out there that are ALL organic, friendlier, better prices. I guess Sellwood New Season’s doesn’t want my business any more.

New Seasons Market in Sellwood is my top choice for groceries, thanks to its excellent selection of fresh produce and unique items. The store is always clean, well-organized, and has a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is fantastic—friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to help, making every visit enjoyable. However, there are a couple of areas where improvement could enhance the shopping experience. The parking situation is challenging, especially during busy times. Expanding parking options or adding rooftop parking would be a great solution to alleviate this issue. Additionally, while the quality of the products is superb, the prices can be higher compared to other local markets. More frequent promotions or a loyalty program could make shopping here more affordable. Despite these minor issues, New Seasons Market - Sellwood remains my favorite place to shop. The quality of the products and the outstanding customer service make it a standout store. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great grocery shopping experience.

Google
This store is located at SE 13th and Tacoma in the historic Sellwood antique district. It opened in 2000, the second New Seasons Market. Employees call it "The little box that rocks". Great selection of produce, meat, pastry, deli and grocery. Good parking and disability access 👍

Google
Great selection of high quality produce, meats, cheese and pantry items. Beef short ribs, lamb shanks and other unusual cuts are available. There are prepared meals, a deli case and salad bar for take home dining options. For a small store, there is a well stocked wine and beer section. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Google
a lot of their front end staff at the cashier stations are extremely rude & unfriendly. Altho there are a few nice ones, but some openly stare at you with pity & are deeply unfriendly to you if you are in a wheelchair for example. They act like they are in a clique. again there are a few nice ones to be fair & other staff seemed nice like the janitorial staff is extremely nice & some of the folks who stock their produce. Peace

Cashiers usually never acknowledge me and one time snarkily laughed at me when I decided not to buy a single watermelon after it came to $25 after they weighed it. Today I dropped a plastic bag on the floor by the bins and an employee came by, picked it up off the floor and put it back on the shelf for the next person to use?? Then I bought a 12 dollar sandwich and the bread was sopping wet and tasted off… The prices are out of touch in general.

Google
I work in the area and am constantly disappointed by their salad bar area. Half the time it's just closed and I'm not coming in at weird hours. Today I walked in at 11:45am and they were in the process of removing the salad bar items. When it is open, I have to pick through the lettuce varieties to avoid getting extra mushy pieces. There is no consistency with the toppings, which I could live with if everything else I mentioned wasn't an issue. I want to go here. But I am constantly walking in and then walking right back out. I'm guessing this is more of a management issue than their deli employees, as someone who has worked a grocery store. Disappointing because it feels like an easy fix!

Melanie Langlois

Google
Staff are friendly and helpful, and I used to love shopping here, but management has been regularly antagonistic toward the employee union. Not surprising considering this "neighborhood" store is owned by Good Food Holdings, a subsidiary of South Korean retail giant Emart. The New Seasons Labor Union has been calling for a customer boycott which I encourage folks to support!

Yelp
Stopped in for a late lunch and appreciated a decent deli selection for smaller version of store. Although a lil pricier than most grocery stores, it still beats most of the restaurants in this neighborhood if your just looking for a quick bite. Staff was pleasant and outdoor eating area was clean and inviting placed next to pretty floral area.

Yelp
Small neighborhood New Seasons that still manages to have all the regular departments, just smaller. The produce is always fresh, high quality and gorgeous. You know when it looks this good, it's going to taste fantastic. The flower department out front always catches my eye and I find myself stopping to snap pics before I even enter the store. Ready made bouquets or buy your own stems, either way they are beautiful! The deli and premade food is a great option when you want food that tastes like a homemade meal, but don't feel like cooking. However, you will pay for that service! The food is definitely on the pricy side. I was looking at the meatballs and at $7.99 each, it was a hard pass. Their breakfast rolls, a very hearty grain flour with raisins and nuts, is one of my favorite treats. Toasted and slathered with butter eaten along side a cup of coffee is a great way to start my day. The service is friendly and I appreciate that they now have self checkout. Unlike another Yelper who seems to feel this is contradictory to friendly service, I always like the convenience of self checkout, especially when I'm stopping in for just a few items. The parking lot is small and cramped, so be forewarned. it is what it is. Remember this store is in an established neighborhood where space is not widely available. If I hit the lottery, I'd shop at New Seasons, Zuppans and Providore exclusively. But since I don't have that kind of disposable cash, I come here for very specific items only and do my regular shopping elsewhere.

Yelp
The Crystal Geyser bottled water was a few degrees warmer than my preference. I would appreciate if they would stock it further back in the cooler, maybe 5 or 8 inches. One star, the floor is also boring.

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
High end food, higher end prices, bad customer service. The meat case always has great food even though it has high prices. Get ready for the folks behind the counter to package it terribly. Sometime literally destroying the food you just purchase and paid a lot for.
google avatar

Yelp
Very friendly, helpful workers. That said, they don't call it New Squeezins for nothing - every time you shop here, your pocketbook gets PINCHED.

Yelp
The Friendliest Store In Town just installed self checkout. This is the state of friendship in America. Corporations lying to your face their employees will treat you like a friend and then removing their employees altogether like a friend who doesn't return your calls. The deli is closed. The fresh sandwiches once offered gone and in their place prepackaged sandwiches. Everything is expensive in this store, if I wanted a pre packed sandwich I'd go to 711. I refuse to purchase the pre sliced lunch meat for the price they are offering. For the cost everything should be to order. They stock items I like then take them away. When I suggest an item, the employees always come back with the same excuse. "We have a small store, we can't stock everything". I didn't ask for everything, I asked for an alternative milk I've seen at other New Seasons. "We're too small" Maybe that's because you stocked 30 different kinds of almond milk. It took the employees here a year and a half to realize Pumpkin Salsa doesn't sell. I watched as the expiration date expired. Be careful here, they stock items haphazardly and can't be trusted to curate the stuff people will buy. At one point the butcher section was twice the size. I could reliably go in and find the meats I wanted to cook. During COVID they hastily scaled back the butcher in response to criticism people wanted meats quickly. Now we are free and clear of the pandemic, we are left with the most basic cuts of meat and fish. Sometimes the fishmonger is so lazy they refuse to break down the fish, offering it whole or with pin bones. When I asked if they ever got bone in ribeyes I had purchased there before and at other New Seasons year round the butcher told me they only get bone in rib eyes in summer and here we are in summertime but they still refuse to stock them. So much turnaround with employees. At once point they had good people, but only a few now. It's a shame because Sellwood deserves a good supermarket but all we get is an overpriced store with poor curation. At one point during the pandemic, my wife reached for some hand sanitizer and the dispenser came crashing down on her leg bruising her. The employees were so negligent they didn't maintain the base of the dispenser so it came loose. One time I was walking through the parking lot and a lady from Milwaukie backed into me with her car going full speed. I spent the next six months on disability and six more in physical therapy recovering from multiple broken bones. The parking lot is hazardous at best. People floor it passing through, it's small and the employees force you to walk in the lot sometimes as they receive shipments that take up the entire sidewalk. Which is great if you have PTSD from getting hit by a car in the parking lot. I am ashamed I've given them so much money. It was convenient to shop there but now we travel far out of our way for better food at lower prices. If you want to risk your life, be overcharged, and ignored when you ask for assistance, go here.

Yelp
This is a great little New Seasons. Excellent quality products (although the selection is a little less than the larger New Seasons stores) and really nice employees and a comfortable seating area. A very lovely place to shop.
google avatar

Senan D.

Yelp
A bit smaller than other New Seasons I've been to in the area. It is really tight in the aisles, so maybe avoid when super busy. An okay selection of goods. Love that they had multiple Gluten-free desserts. The staff was very polite and offered to help as needed. Much more like a small corner grocer over a major chain.
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
My least favorite new seasons in the area. It's expensive (more so than the others), it's smaller, and the parking sucks. They don't have a lot of what the other new seasons have because the size of this store is tiny. This new seasons is always over crowded. However for what they have they always have full shelves, and happy workers. They are always eager to help me find something I need.
google avatar

Kerrie D.

Yelp
Really nice local market. Ok, the prices are BONKERS, like $8.99 for an 8oz bag of peanut butter pretzels...WHAT!!! But on the other hand, they do have an excellent selection of anything and everything you might be looking for. The produce section is right inside the front entrance, and there was a big table of fresh local grapes; red, green and black. The grapes were fantastic, probably some of the best grapes i've ever eaten! Prepared food section was also fantastic, lots of fresh grilled meats, salads and vegetarian choices.

Yelp
The best New Seasons location! The staff is always beyond friendly and helpful. Never long lines, and there is always good stock of food.

Yelp
I've been going to the Sellwood New Seasons for years, ever since they closed the one in John's Landing. What they both have in common, is the funky neighborhood authentic ambiance, with old Sellwood building and layout. This used to be an old Thriftway, another great neighborhood place. So glad that New Seasons moved in here, and kept the interior and exterior charm. The main entrance, locals have to pass through the plants and fresh cut flowers, before moving through the fresh fruit, into the produce department. I love the local produce here. The cozy paths and conscious customers define the space where there is just enough of each fruit or vegetable, whose freshness screams of health. Customers here are so mindful, wearing their masks, and respecting social distancing, as they peer around the end caps of the aisles before deciding on their next destination. The fish and meat counter, is to scale for this shop. Customers stand in line, if need be, in separate aisles in the Vitamins & Supplements, which perfectly lead to the meat, poultry, and fish. Arrows are clearly marked on the floor towards the check out, winding through the fresh baked bread, bakery items, cheese, and fresh packaged food to go. It's so easy to find everything an New Seasons shopper wants, without having to walk a mile to find them. Some of us like quaint small neighborhood grocery stores. If this appeals to you, stop on by and enjoy the experience.

Yelp
I appreciate this store and the fabulous people who work here. I've been shopping here for six years and always enjoy: --the vibrant flowers at the entrance --the beautiful bouquets that have brightened my office, my home or helped me celebrate friends --fresh produce (especially the bountiful kale / carrot / purple cabbage bags --delightful body oils and candles --fresh deli foods --soy curls to help my son through a month long vegan assignment from school --adventurous parking--true for all New Seasons stores; it's grown on my --impeccable service --best coffee grinding section in town --$5 rewards--I work hard for those! Lots to love! Keep it coming!

Yelp
Great cozy neighborhood market located in Sellwood. I was staying at a Airbnb not far from here and went in to stock up on my essential provisions... such as like Bottled Water, Ice cream and nummies for in case I got snacky. This place was clean, organized and the staff was helpful, cashiers quick. Great balance of vegetarian/vegan and carnivore selections so don't be intimidated. Plenty of parking and a good variety of organic wines and craft brews. You know me I always like places that lend's itself to possible picnic basket ensemble. Respectfully Reviewed

Yelp
What a magnificent jewel of a store! Are you just cooking for yourself? Come here! Perfectly sized portions of delicious foods, gluten and dairy free options, fresh produce, a cookie bar and deli with premade Little dishes perfect for one. Mediterranean and Keto diets are supported here! Looking for a rare item? It's likely here! The employees are super nice and friendly! Yummy!

Yelp
They are trying their best. Touted as the friendliest.. there is plenty to choose from.. A very fresh selection of produce and many, many vegan and vegetarian options I find new items every week!!

Yelp
I'm not fond with New Seasons, but when they are the ONLY market that sells 'stuff I need now', I have no choice but shop! With that said, hubby have been shopping here, when we are in the Sellwood area, while I'm at my events. He's pretty spoiled, I'm more frugal type of a person, but taste is more important than anything else. It doesn't matter how good the 'food' looks, I won't be buying it again, if it doesn't taste good! Since, this is my first time here, at this location, I'm ONLY reviewing my experience with the Deli and Bakery department. Hubby ordered the Flat-ironed steak, potato salad, & Oriental Chicken meatballs. The steak was delicious & tender, (he said), the potato salad was OK. I had the Salmon Patties, and the kale salad. (I thought, hubby made a better salmon patties! ) The salad, I can't figure out what it was marinated on, because I was a bit disappointed! I've had other kale salads (restaurants or other markets before), and craved for kale, but the dressing didn't suit me. I didn't care with too much anything on it! I want to be able to taste KALE. I probably wouldn't order those again! I did enjoyed the Tiramisu, who doesn't? If I had more time to shop, I was eyeing some produce and garden stuff!

Yelp
Sorry you really screwed up. We live in the neighborhood. We spent $ 500 plus a month and you decide to close the fresh deli counter and think giving pre made sandwiches is considered a high quality grocery store. It was a terrible decision. It becomes easier now to just drive a little longer to Trader Joe's or QFC. So disappointed.

Yelp
Huge shout out to New Seasons Market and their Instacart partner. For too long I have missed the opportunity to shine a light on how much Frontline workers - like Instacart and New Seasons staff - are making a huge difference in our communities. These amazing folks are carrying so much weight on their shoulders. They are making a difference in our society. They are really heroes. I can't say enough about how New Seasons Market, Instacart family and all the people that they have employed - are helping to shape a real public health response. As a public health physician, I know very well the impact of these small measurable community-based steps. And New Seasons Market is making huge steps in the community by making online shopping available, instituting aggressive policies to help in-store social distancing, and by easing the burden of shopping for people who right now are very fearful. This is a big shout-out of appreciation for New Seasons Markets and Instacart. They are doing amazing work.

Yelp
We were in the store today after being away from OR for some time, doing some veg acquisition for a family salad. To my amazement they offered no produce bags for purchases ! Instead they expect you to put the damp products into your cart ( who knows what or who was in that cart before) and then putting all the unprotected product on the check out stand - gross ! This is one of those store decisions that makes zero sense from the customer standpoint- rethink please !!
google avatar

Grace W.

Yelp
This is a cute neighborhood market. It felt very quaint to be inside. It didn't have a big chain market feel, which is a nice change. We came here a year before and they had wine tasting and delicious samples. This time around, we picked up a lot of fun items for our meals. I would say that prices are not cheap and more expensive. However, it is offset w the fun ambiance and kind staff members. The cashier offered our little girl a sticker.
google avatar

Scot N.

Yelp
This place is great. They have a wide selection of items you may not normally find at the usual grocery store. The store is always clean. The employees are always helpful and friendly. There never seem to be that long of lines at the checkout. Are they the cheapest? No. But you know that when you go here. However, I have found that there are several items which are cheaper here than even at QFC. If you know what to look for, you will end up leaving with a couple of good deals.
google avatar

Grendel Z.

Yelp
Small grocery with great curation. They stock some of the best dark chocolate bars I've had (Rangers), great cheeses (including good local ones) and high quality stuff.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
This is a smaller location than most New Seasons stores. There is no seating area and there are fewer hot food options. The floor markings around social distancing are a bit difficult to follow. They are just orange dots with no text that loop around the store. It took my husband and I a minute to figure out that's where you're supposed to stand. On the plus side, they did a really great job when I came to pick up my Thanksgiving turkey that I preordered. I ordered it online. Pickup was outdoors. The pick up tent was highly visible. I gave the women at the tent my name, got my turkey as well as some coupons and left. It was all incredibly quick and easy and I appreciated the level of thought that was put into it.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Clean and simple, best for specials items. Their chocolate section is huge and their grab and go food section is easy and stocked. Finally found a hard kombucha that wasn't 2.5% and extremely expensive. They had a 6 pack for 11.99 and has as much alcohol as a white claw

Yelp
Oh my goodness - social overload. Let's just say I did not originate on the West Coast of the United States of America. It is very bizarre to have people talking to me at the cash register and making small talk. Sometimes, I am having a bad day. Lately, it's been a difficult couple of years, actually. It's not getting any better. Still, I need groceries, no? Sometimes, silence is the best gift you can share with someone. The constant chit-chat is really too much, just to purchase a couple of items. It's draining on my whole person. The place did have what I need, but I feel obliged to smile and 'share' when I just really want a Fiji water and a supplement I was out of. Oy~

Yelp
Chris (Female) really went above and beyond for my request. 3/4/20 This cornovirus stuff had my wife freaked- I have a 17 month old daughter...my wife has been asking me for hand sanitizer anywhere I go... New Seasons like everywhere else is sold out. No details needed but Chris made my wife extremely happy with what I brought home tonight. Thank you very much Chris & Tacoma New Season's. I am a few blocks away and am in the store daily every night. This is my first review for NS and Chris deserves A %100!!! Adam, Sara, & Baby Stone

Yelp
Hazzaaaahhh!!!!!! Okay so, I'm out on the town after a night of hi-jinks. I haven't eaten in 3 days and I can hardly see. So, I decide I need a sandwitch. I waddle my way up to the sandwitch counter and this guy Charlie ,well Charlie goes and makes me the best freaking sandwitch known to man. He knows how to properly arrange a sandwitch. None of that awkward placement of the tomato where it flops out the back when I bite down. He didn't make the rookie mistake of toasting the lettuce. No. Everything was perfect. After I had this sandwitch I got my life back in order. I returned all the souls I had been stealing. I replaced all the dirt I had been collecting and I made amends with the thousands of insects I had captured over the years!

Bob S.

Yelp
I would have given them a 5 star a few years ago, but $10 for a 14oz Haagen-Dazs is crazy. prices here rise faster than inflation and friendliness of the staff has nose dived. not sure if it is new management or just short staff.

Taylor L.

Yelp
Stopped in really quick to grab some groceries for my daughter after work. This is not my usual New Seasons. It was cute in there but after today I'm going to stick to my usual @ 7 corners. - I'm not used to how the line setup was and a man waived me to check out at the end register. I thought, that's nice. This cashier (bald? Didn't look at his nametag) is laughing really loud and I quietly look at him while he words vomits to me about how he just saw this girl's poorly thought out tattoo of a mermaid and her butt crack. He goes on and on and honestly I drowned out most of it because listening to someone talk shit on someone else is not my style. However, this guy was shit talking about MY tattoo to my face and didn't realize a damn thing. Real class act. This one star goes out to you.

Yelp
I do not usually write reviews for these type of business. I try to stick with restaurants rather than service or just retail business. However when a place goes above and beyond to provide exceptional service, I try to take the opposite approach of our current social environment. When someone gives me a bad experience I tend to change my behavior. IE I don't go there any more. When someone or a store gives me this kind of experience I feel like it should be shown appreciation and recognized as more than just a purveyor of food or groceries. It should be recognized as a part of the community. A piece of your neighborhood, the very essence of your extended family. Sometimes we want to go where everybody knows your new and their always glad you came. I don't go to this location for the prices. OK? I go there because people recognize me. They ask me how am I doing. Sometimes I even go there just to talk because I know someone will engage me. It didn't start out that way as I was a new shopper. But the treatment was the same. Ask a question about a product and they are willing to answer the question. Sometimes even say here sample the product on me let us know what you think. I can't say any other store locations I have been to that are so welcoming. So steady a staff. Recognizing that people like working there. They stay. I am pleased to highly recommend this location not only as having some unique and high quality selections but also having some of the friendliest staff. Just makes you want to go back. Thanks New Seasons Staff for welcoming me.

Martez C.

Yelp
TWO instances in the past 2 months: One: bought sausage and the male counter person in the meat department reached into the case WITH HIS BARE HANDS to retrieve them. Two: I went in to give them another try a week ago and bought the Al Pastor sausage...I baked one of them and the result is shown in the picture below. The sausage casing disintegrated and the contents were the texture of porridge. NEVER again!

Yelp
Not as good as other New Seasons, plus the people around there are not very friendly, are neurotic or are afflicted with chronic cranial anal inversion. I'll never spend money at this location again for the comparative reason that I avoid business plagued with mentally disturbed homeless zombies! Maybe you clowns should learn to mind your own freaking business and keep your narrow backsides out of other people's parades.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok....one of the biggest, best, and cleanest NS. Not inexpensive but awesome meat, and a huge beer and wine selection.
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
I love New Seasons, in general. Their good to their employees and customers, friendly customer service, always coming out with the free samples, and their chip readers are the fastest I've ever seen. This location is no exception. Except that it's the worst location. It definitely fits all of the criteria above 100%, but both the store itself and the parking lot are extremely cramped. Seriously, try getting in and out of that parking lot. And good luck finding a spot, but if you do, and actually make it into the store, you'll realize their selection is about half of what all the other New Seasons have to offer. They should call it New Seasons Express, except that implies a quick experience. That parking lot gives you anything but. As such, I avoid it like the plague. On the rare occasions I'm forced to go, I get street parking and scoff at everyone fumbling around the parking lot. Suckers.
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
I live in Sellwood and this New Seasons is my market of choice in the neighborhood. It's smaller than other New Seasons Markets, but they manage to fill it with most everything I need regardless. The produce is reliably fresh and has lots of in-season items, awesome because l subscribe to Eating Well and the recipes almost always make use of produce available only certain times of the year. It keeps my menu interesting and New Seasons hasn't let me down in terms of ingredient availability. The deli is full of goodness, especially the premade salads. They change frequently and I often make a weekday meal out of them. You can couple them with the delicious rotisserie chicken (which they will split for you if you don't want a whole one). The beer selection is actually pretty good too. There is a nice variety of tasty staple beers, but the beautiful thing is that they manage to pack in quite a few seasonal brews--a bonus if you're into that kind of thing (I am). The dry goods are impressive mostly because NS stocks a lot of local brands, which I am incredibly appreciative of. And while this sometimes translates to a steeper price tag, New Season's stocks the generic Western Family brand to keep me on budget when needed. There is a great little flower section out front that offers everything from single stems for a dollar fifty and bunches for five bucks, to beautifully done bouquets. They also have succulents and air plants for reasonable prices. Don't be afraid to ask them to wrap your stems in tissue or pot a succulent--they do it with a smile and often at no charge. The staff here is great--super friendly and incredibly adept at maintaining the village-like feel prevalent in Sellwood. It's not unusual for members of the staff to remember you and inquire about whatever tidbit you revealed the last time you strolled through the checkout. They're awesome like that. The one complaint I have about this store is that items I fall in love with routinely go out of stock. It's frustrating when this happens but it's a byproduct of stocking local, and often emerging, products. Sometimes it's difficult for the suppliers to keep up with demand when they earn a spot on the shelf.

Yelp
As My general impression of all new seasons is the food is most the time organic and fresh and very pricey but the customer service is always been a little sketch. Sometime you run into Amazing People but other customer service People make you feel dumb if you forget to take your food out of your cart or your basket put it on the counter for them to ring up and put baskets underneath counter. Thankfully I don't typically shop at these stores because for the price the customer service should be a lot better. You shouldn't have to know new seasons processes to feel comfortable shopping there.

Yelp
Early on a Saturday morning ... no one in the checkout lines; cashiers just waiting for customers ... my basket had three items ... the cashier refused to take my items out and gave me a little attitude about how I needed to take the items out and put my basket down below. When I tried to put my basket away, the baskets were in a cluttered area with merchandise hanging in the way. I get that I it helps the cashiers to de-basket items, but this seemed slightly ridiculous. I was having a bad start to the day, and this was really not what I needed.

Yelp
A great store when it opened 20 years ago, but not quite as good now. Very high prices on almost everything, so you have to search for good deals. In the past six months especially, our family has noticed a consistent mismatch between the advertised price, and the price you're actually paying in the checkout line. How bad is it? In six out of the last 8 trips, a particular kind of produce has been listed at, say, $1.99 per pound, and at checkout you're charged the regular price at $2.49 per pound. And it's ALWAYS in the store's favor. I'm not suggesting it's intentional, but it seems to be of no particular concern to them.

Yelp
Love the New Season in Happy Valley and in SE Portland (Division and Hawthorne)! But this one...the staff is so rude, the parking is really crowded and the selection for the to go food/deli is very small.

Yelp
There are many things I like about new seasons. First, thanks for making a delicious fruit tart it was a great birthday treat. They have ala cart herbs so you don't have to buy a big bulk for when you're cooking. I actually think they should teach a class on how to keel your organic food just as fresh when you take it home since my cilantro turned real quick. Their chip selection is great. Same with their soups and salad dressings. I love their organic meat options. They always make my recipes take that much better with doing it French style. Walking up to the grocery store - buying your food - cooking it that night. Fresh to table. Overall other than the price I enjoy coming here if I can't make it to another big store. I can't buy in bulk here. But one option if you're going to spend $60 or more is that you can get free delivery for your grocery shopping with Amazon prime. So that's pretty cool.

Yelp
You do know who I am don't you? I'm the mother loving (I mean serious hard core, rated x, full penetration mother lovin') Duke of this here joint. Why else would the guy behind the deli counter happily accommodate my whim for a not on the menu Reuben by making Thousand Island dressing on the spot and slicing fresh corned beef? Would the meat department offer to cut up 3 lbs. of chicken wings for just a regular guy? Or offer to throw that piece of flank steak through the tenderizer a few times to any commoner? I think not! And the cute check out girls? You (yes you, pedestrian) probably won't see it, but they are always flashing me a flirtatious smile and have that special sparkle in their eyes that is only reserved for royalty. You know they all be itching to be my Kate Middleton. Even the dude checkers go out of their way to compliment my selection in beer, laugh at my "observations" and be extremely nice. Granted, they haven't gotten around to creating a reserved parking spot for me in their oh too tiny parking lot, but I'm sure it is just an oversight. So while I can't recommend them specifically for the non-blue bloods, if you are a baron, king, queen, earl, prince, princess, pharaoh, czar, emperor or any other royal bad ass with cheese, make this your grocery shopping palace of choice.

Yelp
Not impressed. Prices are very high and services where it counts are limited. The fruit and vegetables are terrible in quality at this location. I just began getting my fruit and veggies from Fred Meyer or the New Seasons in Happy Valley. This location is filthy and the staff do not appear to care. The inside looks dingy, dirty and on its way out. Staff at registers are amazing, courteous and overwhelmingly engaging. Meat department not so much. If you care about this location you may want to invest in cleaning and train the staff that are not directly supervised or in an area with other staff. I agree with Steve B that the cashiers are great, the others seem angry about being there. I think there are better places to spend my money.

Yelp
New Seasons Sellwood - Likely the smallest of the bunch, but still packs quite a punch. This little southern outpost of Portland's favorite grocer has served me well over the years. It used to be the closest to my house when I lived over in John's Landing, but I couldn't afford to shop there too often back in those days. Now it's in a pretty out-of-the-way spot, but I still stop in when I'm in the area because, well, you know... it's a New Seasons! This NS has a similar setup as most others, just much smaller. It's a lot like the newer Hawthorne location, but I think smaller again. You know, they say size doesn't matter... and this little New Seasons definitely has the same confidence as its well-appointed brethren. No Extenze necessary, thanks Jimmy Johnson. Decent produce section, the same great dry-goods offerings, a small-er-ish deli, bulk, meat, you name it, they have it. And a lot of it is local and organic. It's a great combination for healthy, guilt-free shopping (if you're prone to concern about being what you eat). Plus, these guys pretty much always have what I'm looking for when I'm in the area, be it coconut water, a healthy snack, or those critical supplies. Love it.

Yelp
This is my new favorite store. It is really amazing. The quality is just as good if not better than Whole Foods and it is a lot less expensive. We got a bunch of fun stuff the other day and I loved everything. The egg salad was fresh and I loved the spices that were in it. I also tried this artichoke salad that was quite good but there was too much dressing on it. Paul tried the chipotle turkey which he really liked! We both loved the fresh sourdough bread that we got, so good! Such a great store....so many healthy and organic options. I will be going back there very soon.

Yelp
Let it be known that generally I am a devotee of New Seasons. The Insterstate store has always been my haunt and I never had a bad experience with any employee there. But the last few times I've been into the Sellwood location I've had some awful experiences. I witnessed a checker scoff loudly at a larger woman in front of me as she scanned her cupcake puchase. Whaaaaaa just happened, I thought to myself. Next time I came in it was my turn. I had to run and get something I'd forgotten and when I came back the female checker was making fun of my chocolate bar purchase with another employee!! Yoinks! Apparently we are no longer able to purchase very expensive fair trade chocolate for a dinner party without judgement. The NEXT time I came in there was a woman whispering to her coworker something very rude about a customer that I'm sure she didn't mean for me to overhear. This store has some serious problems 'tude-wise. I recommend some chocolate. It puts everyone in a better mind state.

Yelp
The branch that started it all for me, this unlikely, mid-life fling w/high end grocerios... This former QFC building, owing mainly to its proximity to the Sellwood library and several local favorite eateries (Bellagios, Mike's, El Palenque a Japanese/Chinese drive through that used to be right behind Mikes, etc....and now, since last year, CHOWDAH! I don't include a Cena outright b/c I did not discover A Cena until after I moved away from the area, through the power o' Yelp), caught my suspicious eye, and won my very reluctant heart through QUALITY. I have never yet seen a "sale" at New Seasons worth mentioning, as in "OMG, .99 cents for any Killer Dave's loaves---- until they're gone!!!" Nope. Let's shut down any hysteria from false rumors right now. What keeps you coming back is that every thing they offer there is just so dang much better than the competition.... Much of what I wrote concerning two other N.S. branches (on NE 33rd, and N. Interstate) came from my discoveries and blossoming love found at the store out on Tacoma. I just love their Deli, and their butcher's corner! I love their abundant investment in Dave's Killer Bread, their commitment to excellence providing diverse beers and sakes, I am completely sold on their veganaise (strange but completely true). They even offer the extremely-rare Ginger Altoids! Those are worth a trip all by themselves! There is so much more to write and to love about this spendy little chain, but I don't wanna hog the mike.... take in what other Yeeps in review have to say, and of course, go see for yourself....New Seasons is definitely no more than an occasional treat, but man when it's time again, what a treat it is....!

Yelp
Why aren't more businesses run like this? They go out of their way to make things happen for you. Even right now, in the depth of the pandemic, customer service thrives at this market. I'm a big fan of New Seasons in general, but the Sellwood store in particular is my favorite. They have a smallish feel but they optimize every square foot of the store. Everything important is still on the shelves, great bulk department (pandemic notwithstanding) and meat department. The only imperfection that occurs to me is that other stores have cheese departments that are a little bigger. But all the obscure things that I buy (ume plum vinegar, canned pimientos, odd root vegetables, to name a few) are here, as well as all the standard things. As other reviewers have pointed out, many things are more expensive here than their Fred Meyer counterparts, but the difference is not as huge as you might think. In general, highly recommended.

Yelp
My 100th review. Fitting because I'm here once or twice a week, and I am always satisfied. I won't speak to the prices, we all know, we all still go. The staff is so helpful, smiley, ready to help me find random foodstuffs. The meat counter is well stocked though slightly small. The fish is fresh and appropriately fish smelly. I love the size of this New Seasons, it's big enough to have all the items you need, and small enough to not entice you into buying $150 worth of weird things. There are free samples all the time, and a cheese case can make you zone out for a minute or so. One beware - the sandwich counter, in all my attempts there is a net total of gross.
