I had no expectations going in, but I walked out genuinely happy that we had randomly decided to stop at New State Burgers & Spirits (NS B&S) for dinner.
So here's my beef (heh) with most of the burgers in town: 'round these parts, they generally tend to be the onion burger variety (which isn't bad, but more on that in a bit), or the gastropub variety. In the case of gastropub burgers, there isn't a decent gastropub in town, regardless of what other people tell you (if you know otherwise, be sure to tell me of the great local gastropub burger you've had, and I'll go try it, and then tell you how disappointing it was). In the case of onion burgers, there's a time and a place for them, but sometimes you want something... meaty... And an onion burger isn't meaty. Unless you get like... a double or a triple, and then... it's almost too meaty? I dunno, it's hard to explain. But NS B&S's "The Cheeseburger" was two-patty perfection (or nearly there).
NS B&S's cheeseburger was probably one of the best burgers I've had in OKC in quite some time. It was a hot, juicy, flavorful, greasy (in that good way, not the "my heart is hurting" way), meaty, but not-too-meaty burger. The only other (local) burger that I've enjoyed as much recently is probably MOB Grill. We got a side of fries too. They were good. But small as far as $3 side goes. We also got a couple cocktails. I'm blankin' on what it's called, but it was delightful; strong (enough) with flavors that I enjoyed at the time, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were now. Something with Grapefruit or a flower in it?
The only knock (but not enough of a knock for me to drop a star) was that it wasn't cheap: 2 Cheeseburgers + 2 Cocktails + 1 Side + Tax/Tip = $57.00. So if you're thinking of this place as a date night option, the menu prices don't match the vibe of the restaurant (not necessarily a problem, unless your guy/girl is bougie). Service was friendly though, and I was able to pay using Toast (which was nifty).
The name checks out. For both the burgers and the spirits.
Edit: HIBISCUS PALOMA! That was the cocktail. Thanks, Toast for the email receipt.
