Where To Eat and Drink in South Waterfront | Eater Portland

"New Taste of India has been serving a menu of comforting classics since opening in 2002. Start the meal with some samosas and an order of paneer pakora before moving on to mains like saag, chicken tikka masala, and chana masala. Among the menu options, there is plenty for vegans and vegetarians to enjoy alongside meat-eaters." - Rebecca Roland

We went for lunch today and it was really delicious! My husband got the combination lunch platter for like $14 and it was a very good deal. He got a lot of food. I got the doll makhani and really enjoyed it. It was very creamy and well cooked. Tons of vegetarian options and great service. Would definitely come back.

I visited for midweek lunch. The lunch service is hot plate deli style, pre-made, served into a tin divided tray as the customer chooses from the available selections. The presentation is reminiscent of elementary cafeteria style. The staff that dished up the selected food was friendly and helpful. The restaurant furniture was basic and clean. The wall decor was haphazard, poorly hung, and thrift store/calendar page like. Looks like a 10 year old did the wall decor. The place would look better without the distracting bad wall decor. I am not sure what the "New" is regarding the restaurant's name. Nothing was new or innovative regarding this restaurant. It is quite basic. The price seemed $2 more than what I'd expect to pay for this style of lunch. The restaurant was mostly empty during my late lunch visit. The food tasted OK. This would not be my first choice, but I'd eat here again.

Google
Went here for lunch. They had a three choice thali platter with great meat and veggie choices. Rice, naan, and chai were available. Everything was so good, fast, and service was kind. Our 2yo ate everything and loved the Bollywood movie and murals. We will definitely be back!

Google
I love coming here! The food is so delicious and the staff are friendly. They have the best Sunday buffet deal. Just truly remarkable food!

This was the amount of food I received for $40. Small dishes. Not worth it.

Google
Takeout was good. Enough for dinner and lunch tomorrow. The tandoori chicken was perfect. The saag paneer is always a favorite in my house.

Google
I stop at the food cart in Rockaway Beach every time I am around that area. I was stoked to find out they had a brick and mortar location right here in Portland. I ate the Lamb Wrap (medium spicy) and a Veggie Samosa. It tasted even better than the food cart. And the size of the wrap was big enough for two meals! The staff were pleasant, patient, helpful, and kind. I enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the restaurant and appreciate that their carry out option is so easy and hassle free. If you want delicious Indian food, you need to stop in.

Google
The ladies were very polite and smiled the entire time. I was made welcome. That goes a long way in my book. we had three different dinners made for us. The Saag Paneer, Shahi Paneer, and the Aloo Matter(Vegan) all three were spot on. I would recommend this place and return. It is hard to find decent food at a fair price in the PNW. Do stop in if you feel in the need for decent Indian food. Thank you New Taste of India for a delightful meal.

Yelp
Consistently delicious Indian food! Some of my favorite dishes are the saag paneer, tikka masala, and the bhindi masala, but I've never had a dish from New Taste that I haven't enjoyed! I particularly appreciate that the food is not spicy and the service is quick.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
We had takeout so cannot comment on service/atmosphere. Chicken tikka masala: good Basmati: perfect Naan: good Aloo Gobi: good Saag paneer: good Overall, all good, not great. Takeout containers are single use (thin clamshell)

Jeni B.

Yelp
Best chicken tikka masala ever. So addicting! I like that they have a lunch combo plate and you can try multiple things. Good portions! Dwaraka is good too and has a similar taste but New taste is my favorite. All the other Indian restaurants I've tried in Portland aren't nearly as good. I just wish you could dine in for dinner.

Yelp
First thing: i have a severe peanut/treenut allergy so i very rarely get to go to indian restaurants, however this place doesnt use any peanuts/treenuts at all! very tasty and really inclusive/accommodating for a variety of dietary restrictions. the staff is super friendly too! i'll definitely be going back. i highly recommend the lunch menu, it's served in a style similar to chipotle where there's dishes prepared and you get to choose up to three as well as a side of rice and naan included. great if you're not super familiar with indian food like myself.

Yelp
This has been to go only since COVID but the food is always consistent and hot!! We get a family spread and all of the fan favs are alway on point- Vindaloo, Tandori, Byriani, Saag Paneer, Naan ect. I like spicy and if you order it hot, they deliver, the staff is friendly, but it's a hole in the wall. While consistent, it's not a creative place they are really the basics, which I appreciate.

K C.

Yelp
Perfect Indian takeout! Food was fantastic and served piping hot so it won't get cold on the way home. Great prices!

Yelp
I frequented this place pre-covid and it was a favorite lunch spot of mine. Close to work at the time. I went there again for lunch today and despite my trying not to compare pre-covid vs post-covid, I was still disappointed. Everything is served in to go boxes whether you are dining in or taking out. There is a small water station at the front of the restaurant where you can also grab napkins and plastic utensils. The food was decent, but at this point, having the dining room open during lunch seems moot to me. If you're just there for food and not the experience of a nice sit down restaurant type thing, then this is just fine. But if you dine in, expect the bare minimum.

Yelp
Came here from out of town and were surprised to find carry out only for dinner. Outside tables were available and we ordered dahl with chicken and also Chana Goa... both were hot and excellent. The food is great and the people helpful.
google avatar

Keely N.

Yelp
Ordered the vegan goa. Slightly confused that there was a piece of paneer but very creamy from the curry. Definitely an interesting flavor and texture with the rice filling wrapped like a burrito.

Bharti S.

Yelp
The food is great but they serve in takeout containers and paper plate if you eat in the restaurant for lunch . If I knew that before I would not have tipped them 20% . Covid is over and regular china would be appreciated if you allow eating inside . Food was great .

Yelp
Food was good, not great, but satisfied a craving for Indian food. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. Came for lunch and rather than a buffet, they offer a Thali Plate where you can choose three mains with rice and naan for $11.00. They serve you at the counter and you can take your platter and sit anywhere in the spacious dining room. For a restaurant that doesn't get a large crowd at lunchtime, this is a smart business move. We all agreed that the standout, by far, was the Chicken Tikka Masala. The tandoori cooked chicken was super moist and the butter tomato sauce creamy and flavorful. I mean, what's not to love about butter, tomato and cream?! Plenty of sauce for the rice and naan to soak up, and plenty of meat. Next time I will get two helpings of this! The Yogurt Curry, a vegetarian dish, was another standout. The yellow curry had a distinct tangy flavor from the yogurt and the roasted veggies were delicious. Large pieces of cauliflower, onion and other veggies plus the perfect blend of spice made this dish very satisfying. The Chicken Mutter, usually a favorite, was just ok. The chicken had a shredded texture and the tomato and pea sauce was salty. All three of us selected this as one of our mains and none of us finished it. Saag anything is my favorite. Usually I order with paneer but they didn't offer paneer dishes as an option, a disappointment, so I ordered Saag Chicken for one of my mains. The dish was so salty that I took a few bites and left the rest. The basmati rice was cooked perfectly and plentiful, enough to have some with all three sides. The naan was very thin and didn't have the buttery flavor I prefer. For $11.00, this was a lot of food, enough for two meals if you liked your selections. Next time I will double the chicken Masala and have the curry as my third main to round it out. Customer service was great. Since it is counter service at lunch time, our interaction was limited; however, the three of us had a lot of catching up to do so stayed well past their 2:30 closing time. Never once did they make us feel uncomfortable; they told us to stay as long as we wanted but let us know they would be running the vacuum! Since this restaurant is close to my home and I love Indian food, I will give it another try. Next time I will go for dinner when I can sample the Lamb Khorma and maybe some Samosa.

Yelp
Best Indian food I've ever had. The garlic naan is so flavorful but paired with the jal frazie omfg I was ready to go to the kitchen and propose to the cook I love this place! And the people are so kind

Yelp
Sorry, no pictures because I ALWAYS RUSH TO EAT THEIR FOOD. Authentic and consistent indian food that has been a take-out staple in our house. The menu at New Taste of India has the variety to satisfy all palates, without overwhelming. They do a good job of describing their dishes so you know what to expect, but each time you try something new you are blown away by the flavor. We have been ordering with them for some time now, which started with food delivery apps until we noticed that the restaurant was not very far away. When we starting taking food out from them, we got to find that they were a family business with a very helpful and caring family. When I talked to them about their food, they explained the dishes and how they should be prepared traditionally to maintain the flavor that should be in them; and that's what they do-- prepare food traditionally to maintain traditional flavors. Our go-to orders have been mild chicken khorma (girlfriend is sensitive to spice) and medium or spicy lamb bhuna. The chicken khorma is always flavorful and the creaminess is unmatched. The way it coats their seasoned rice is heaven and don't even get me started about eating it WITH THEIR NAAN. The lamb bhuna is VERY flavorful and that lends its hand to the mint chutney that they use. It is well seasoned and the flavor is carried throughout the dish. It is not creamy like the khorma or tikka masala, but it does work very well with rice and/or naan. I am a big fan of lamb because I like the richness of it, but if you're sensitive to its flavor, the chicken is cooked well every time.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in PDX for Indian food. It's a family-owned restaurant, the service is consistently good and the food is always tasty. Some of my favorite dishes are Chicken Vindaloo and Dahl.

Yelp
Vegetarians and vegans beware. I ordered the vegan goa wrap (it says "vegan" in the name and is marked as vegan) and was dismayed to find a big hunk of meat inside. Having not eaten meat in decades, I'll spare the details of how upsetting this experience was. Suffice it to say: unacceptable! I was a repeat customer but I'll never eat here again.

Jordan T.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. My favorite dishes are the saag paneer, chana masala, and aloo gobi. The vegetable pakora is also amazing. I have celiac and really appreciate their thorough labeling of dishes as GF or non GF as well as their wide selection of vegetarian dishes. I've only gotten takeout and the food is always ready in a timely manner.

Julie C.

Yelp
I've been getting takeout from this place for a few years now. The naan is amazing, and they give you a ton of it. Everything is good. My kids are addicted to the mutter paneer. The tandoori chicken is incredible. Literally everything on the menu is good. And the owner is always so helpful and kind.

Yelp
I enjoyed my first time here. A good friend took me here. I ordered the lamb vibdaloo and it was delicious. Tender and spiced right. I will be back. Normally I don't give 5 stars but the customer service was excellent. The food is a solid 4 and I will update as try more of their dishes. The decor is nice and simple. A decent size parking lot but there are many businesses in this plaza. I didn't have any issues with parking. Excellent value for the affordable price. Next time I will bring my own tubberware as there is plenty of extras and bonus there is never ending chai refills.

Yelp
Why are the reviews so low here??? I just got "caterer" lunch (carter in quotes because they don't cater unless it's 20-25 but I bought enough for 13 at least I hope I did). I went in a figured because I wasn't going to stay for lunch that I would buy my own. The owner (?) very friendly Caucasian woman told me to sample anything, that the paneer is amazing. Which it TOTALLY is. Everything that I've tried so far is DELICIOUS, so so delicious. It's a bummer it's not buffet, but apparently they have new lunch specials everyday. They have a pretty big private parking lot which is nice. And I can't tell if the portions are generous but I can't wait to eat my lunch!

Marla Kleinman K.

Yelp
Excellent quality food and easy take out service. Wide variety of menu options. Easy parking at front

Yelp
Been coming here for the 3 years. We've been trying to find the best Indian restaurant and here it was!! Tried others around town but it just seemed the preparation in this restaurant had more thought to it as the flavors in the food is above most!!
google avatar

Jackie H.

Yelp
Our dinner started with complimentary papadum served with a daal-like sauce. It was a nice surprise but the papadum had a slightly leathery texture which could've been helped by popping it in the toaster oven for a minute or 2. I thought the food was a bit overpriced. $14 each for saag chicken and vegetable korma. Having said that the saag chicken was good. Chicken was moist and saag was creamy with a nice spice blend but it didn't have that subtle nuttiness. Vegetable korma was too sweet with a weird thick starchy consistency. Service was great. Ambience is nice. I may go back since it is hard to find Indian restaurants S of Portland but I would stay away from the kormas.
google avatar

Sylvia L.

Yelp
With not many options for Indian food around South Waterfront, New Taste of India is our go-to for Indian takeout. They are always great about having our food ready in 20 min or less. In terms of food from good to bad: The chicken curry with medium spice is great. Chicken Makhani is good too. Chicken tikka masala is decent but not the best I've had. The garlic naan is really doughy tasting but not terrible. I was not a fan of the chicken korma, and would not get that again.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
Delicious and well-priced Indian food. Their lunch special is really great...so much food for $11! Rice, naan, 2 sides and the day's dessert/3 sides and no dessert. For me, its enough for two meals. So yummy! Want a drink with it? Add $1. Also, their chai tea got me hooked on chai. Their dine-in dinner menu has a great selection of deliciousness. And if you're gluten free, the menu indicates the food that HAVE gluten instead...because so few of their items do. Definitely a GF friendly place. I'm also always thoroughly entertained by the random Bollywood movies showing on the TV.

Aaron F.

Yelp
Love the food here, always delicious and filling!

Samantha W.

Yelp
The best Indian i've had in Portland. I highly recommend this family run business. My husband grabbed us lunch yesterday and my gosh it was delicious. We had the Korma, Kofta and Samosas. We will be ordering from here again and again.

Sophia H.

Yelp
absolutely the best Indian food in Portland, staff is amazing
google avatar

Aubrey S.

Yelp
Really delicious! Fresh spices and vegetables. Didn't feel heavy, and hit the spot (well done Indian food can make you feel like you've really been somewhere). The naan wasn't the overly puffed kind, it was dense and perfectly grilled. The samosas weren't too salty (a common pitfall), and the vegetarian filling was very tasty. Aloo Mutter, Aloo Gobi, all the Aloos we ordered were yummy!! I think Indian food is special because of the collision of spices, and overwhelming the veggies with spices can be just as unsatisfying as underwhelming them. This was balanced to me. Their to-go operation hit all the marks. On-time, well wrapped and containered food. We'll be back to try some more!
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Very clean, lots of traditional items, friendly service. The tandoori chicken was perfectly seasoned and the mint chutney was perfection.
google avatar

Dianne S.

Yelp
The chicken tikka masala is so buttery, creamy, rich, and flavorful! My boyfriend and I kept commenting every time we took a bite. It is especially great for dipping in the garlic naan bread. The garlic naan was also very flavorful and crisp, just how I like it. Overall, great service, was easy to order over the phone and pick up on time. We definitely will be going back for more!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
The husband and I travel 40 minutes one way to come here. The place is absolutely amazing and i just now realized that i have not reviewed this place until now. By no means do i consider myself an expert on Indian food but i do know this.... this is dam good food. The tikka masala is rich and creamy with soft perfectly cooked pieces of chicken that they make sure you get plenty of. Finally was able to try the lamb curry and it is everything i expected, seasoned to perfection with lamb that was cooked with an attitude. The price is extremely reasonable for a Sunday, three choices, Rice, Naan & a drink for $12.

N K.

Yelp
Have tried multiple dishes here, from their samosas (which are delicious) to their wraps. All mouth watering!
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Solid 3.5 stars. Came here for lunch and tried out their interesting concept where you could choose 3 out of 6 different dishes to be on a platter for $11. Came with naan and unlimited rice. Our party got a couple platters so we could try everything A couple of the dishes I really liked...there was a coconut cream (butter checken-like) dish and a veggie korma with cauliflower. The others I didn't care for as much. The naan was a bit too flat. Atmosphere was nice and staff were super friendly. Mango lassi was $4, which seemed a bit steep. But I'd come back to try more dishes.
google avatar

Annie O.

Yelp
I went to the restaurant as I had before with my well behaved, clean, trained service dog. The gentleman behind the counter said NO as I walked in. It was my birthday so I was in a great mood and I did explain to him politely that federal law demands he allow my service dog in. He did not change his answer. He just crossed his arms and said NO again and again until we left. I can walk, but many people with service animals would have a harder time than I relocating to another restaurant as we had to. It is federal law for a reason. So that people who don't understand what it means to be disabled or how your dog helps you cant make your life more difficult than it needs to be.
google avatar

Obadiah E.

Yelp
If you're considering delivery, I would say don't waste your time. We put together a substantial order, waited for our food, and they just cancelled it, offering no reason for the cancellation. Cut to the chase and order from someone else to start with.
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
THIS is great Indian food. The thali plate is a great deal and they always have a great selection. The lemon chicken is really flavorful, as is the chili chicken. My son loves the garlic naan. The staff is friendly and helpful. There aren't many Indian restaurants in SW Portland so I'm really happy there's a good one.
google avatar

Bahareh K.

Yelp
This place has delicious food and we get a big order of take out every week because we wanted to support our local restaurant in hard times. Twice now they have forgotten to put something in the bag. That's fine mistakes happen- husband had to call them and then drive all the way back to get the item. When he gets there they give him a hard time and insinuate that he is lying about the missing item. They make him show them a copy of the receipt, then they say that because it is checked off it means they put it in the bag. The guy in the kitchen then insinuates that my husband is lying and sarcastically says "well I guess if they say they didn't get it the. I guess the customer's always right." So disappointing and extremely rude.

Rosalinda D.

Yelp
NOT HYGIENIC!! Went in there today for lunch, the girl who was working the cash registered who had no gloves on serving food, FLICKED RICE OFF HER HAND INTO THE BUFFET RICE she was serving out of! Ok, I'm starving so I thought, lets hope she washed her hands. So I start eating my food and I found a big piece of plastic in my chicken tikka masala! As far as flavors, I've been to India and there are restaurants in the US which are just as good as the authentic food in India, this was blan, lacking flavor, you can tell the quality of ingredients is cheap. I will never go here again.
google avatar

Neil B.

Yelp
Coming from an Indian who has had a lot of Indian food , this food is not authentic. Adding sugar to chicken dishes , literal teaspoons of white sugar is not standard. The spice complexity is also very low, it's very basic bland food. and not cheap. Tandoori Chicken was good however
google avatar

Jenna B.

Yelp
We've ordered takeout from here several times and it is consistently good! We've tried a bit of everything, meat and vegetarian dishes, and all are very good! Would highly recommend the garlic naan and mango lassi! The servings are substantial and are enough for two meals.
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
Delicious! The staff recommended the shrimp korma to me and it was so flavorful and amazing. Definitely satisfied the craving. Their chicken tikka masala is also delicious. Both go perfectly with garlic naan.
google avatar

Angelica P.

Yelp
We had been outside all morning and we're chilled to the bone. The food at this place was perfect for warming us up. Food was delicious and service was great (very nice people). Definitely recommend this place and will be coming back.
google avatar

Wayne C.

Yelp
Really good stuff. Point blank. What's not to like about good Indian food. The New Taste of India delivers. The menu is extensive and includes enough variety (vegetarian, meat/protein options, etc.) to satisfy any eater. The rice dishes are super tasty. A word of caution for the non-spicey foodies - NTI is not shy about their flavors. The dishes can run on the spicy hot side. As such, order accordingly. We found the medium spice Biryani is to just right. Add in an order of vegetable Samosa and Pakoras and some Tandoori breads and you've got the perfect meal. The fact that they offer takeout and dine-in options - makes NTI a great go-to meal for a busy Tuesday night on the drive home.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
The food tastes like it was quality ingredients but the flavors were not what I was expecting. Chicken Korma was really sweet and saag paneer tasted like steamed spinach. The garlic naan was fine but i probably wouldn't order it again. The vegetable samosa was good and generous portion. I really loved the mint chutney that came with it
google avatar

Kritin G.

Yelp
Our server did not know what a "roti" was.. This is not an authentic place, avoid if possible! The service was bad too! Our server did not return after the food arrived despite several attempts to get attention. The food was sub average, dal Makani was yellow in color - which was a first time for us to ever see! We were disappointed overall with this experience and don't plan to return.
google avatar

Chan C.

Yelp
Removing a star: Ate here a 2nd time, everything was crazy salty! Ate here a 3rd time boring at best. Terrible naan. Original review: Very good! A bite suprise by the non-traditional buffet. They don't have a buffet that you help yourself to. It's a Thalia lunch special you pick two cirrus. Comes with rice naan, raita, rice pudding. The star curry was the lamb khari - so good!!! Rice pudding was nothing special, but everything else was delish! All for $9, $10 if you want soda included.
google avatar

Bill J.

Yelp
I love the lunch special here for $11, $13 with two drinks. I usually get another entree instead of a dessert. Easily enough for two people eating a light lunch. Nice crew. Fun to watch some of the Indian movies playing. Bill
google avatar

Morris W.

Yelp
This was the wife's and my first visit. We had all the usuals, service was just fine... but the food was JUST FAIR. We had it prepared "medium hot", but it just did not have enough Indian flavor zip for us. Just not flavorful enough that you would expect from Indian food. It may be a better lunch stop than dinner. Sorry, you will need to make your own final decision on this place. Enjoy (maybe) West-Morry
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
I've gotten take out here about 30 or more times. I've eaten in the restaurant maybe 2-3 times. I always order the same thing: -Chicken Tikka Masala - medium spice -Saag Paneer add Lamb - medium spice -Vegetable Korma - medium spice I highly recommend eating here. Personally, I think this is more of a take-out place than a dine-in place, but the food is amazing. I have had great customer service 90% of the time. They will also prepare something if it is not on the menu. They made a vegetable panner dish for me that I ordered on accident but it was delicious lol. If you go to NW Growlers nearby for a beer, they will also walk your order over there for take out. To me its like 4.5 stars, but I have ordered here so many times with so many great meals and the food is always consistently good, they get rounded up to 5 ! One of the reviews said they ordered Lamb Saag that tasted like beef, I order the Lamb Saag every time and it is always delicious lamb... for the record.

Yelp
This restaurant is one of my favorites in all of Portland. They always take excellent care of us and most importantly there food is phenomenal. Best Indian restaurant in Portland in my opinion.
