The 12 Best Bagels In Philly

"Overbrook’s New York Bagel Bakery is one of our favorite places to go for a quick and casual bagel sandwich for breakfast or lunch. You can dress up the gorgeously crackly bagels with classic bacon, egg, and cheese, tuna salad and tomatoes, nova lox, or just go basic with a flavored cream cheese like apple cinnamon. They’re on the fuller side, which means if you go the sandwich route–which is the best way to eat them–be prepared for some mouth gymnastics and some super chewing. But with an ideal ratio of meat, cheese, and fluffy eggs, it’s the kind of exercise we actually look forward to.  " - candis mclean, alison kessler

Google
Their bagels are so fresh that I took some to freeze since I live in a different city. I froze them, and they taste just as good as fresh whenever I heat them up. Their cream cheese is out of this world. I’m also in love with their chocolate chip muffins they’re so moist and delicious. I highly recommend this place, and the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Google
So this place down the street like a mile from us makes bialys anytime as long as you give them enough time to make from scratch which is 20 minutes..unbelievable service..and the bagels and bialys and chocolate muffins are delicious..thank you thank you thank you…I hope that people just come by to see how you treat people and learn that yes you can be nice and successful at the same time

Google
I have been coming here for over 5 years because the bagels are the best in the city. Oh when they are warm even better. The customer service is always friendly and welcoming. Nick is the man, always check in to see how I am doing. They other Staff just as great! My favorite is the everything & the egg bagel. The cream is top tier. Please put garlic bagel on the menu as an evergreen bagel. Give this place a try, you wont regret it!

Google
Their bagels are so great, not like anything else around the Philly suburbs. I found New York Bagel Bakery by accident while shopping across the street for a cake at a bakery. These are the best bagels by far in this area. I plan to make a regular visit to try other menu items. Also, I didn't realize until after I left that they also bake bialies.

Emma Hart

Google
I only ever buy bagels and a container of cream cheese here to go. I never bought a prepared sandwich. But I am not sure what all these bad reviews are for. I bought a dozen bagels today and they were just as delicious as they always are. Honestly the best bagels I ever tasted and the workers are really friendly too.

Angela Parker

Google
Great bagels. I got the lox on the pumpernickel and plain bagel. Wow!!! Fantastic. I will be back. This is a takeout only joint.

Jeffrey Gavio

Google
Best bagel I've had in the Philly area and right up there with anything from NYC or Montreal or any other bagel haven. Classic NY style bagels, house blended cream cheeses, and all your typical accoutrements. Big fan of the everything with lox and scallion cream cheese. They aren't particularly cheap, but they are amazing. Zero seating so definitely plan to take out but you're better than me if you don't scran it down in your car in the parking lot.

Google
The new owner Rayyan is amazing! He’s so helpful and kind. The baker Jee is a literal superstar. Coming along with the other baker Fares has excellent customer service skills. The bagels are delicious and I always crave them. The cashier girl is the sweetest.

Yelp
Always enjoyed getting bagels here How ever recently noticed them to be very dry like they weren't right out of the oven Was wondering if it were me Pumpernickel smaller than usual everything very dry egg bagels as well Anyone else?? Service counter people are always great

Yelp
Have bought a few times to freeze. MUCH BETTER to eat FRESH and right away than to freeze and then eat. Totally different experience! These are soooo delicious fresh, that you dont need to put anything on them! Have to go very early to get exactly what you want. They are almost always out of most popular ones later in the day. Not sure why they dont just make more of the most popular.

Yelp
Great bagel and spread. Got the lox cream cheese and it was amazing! Workers were super patient as I was contemplating my order. Really friendly.

Yelp
I have to admit that I was hungry, and that I didn't realize that places charge for toasting bagels now, but it was delicious. This is the kind of bagel I look for; soft on the inside with that light crust experience on the outside. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel toasted with butter and sat outside on a bench to eat it even though it was a little bit chilly out. The shop itself is very small with only enough space to order, and a handful of fresh baked bagel options and muffins out on display. You can purchase specialty cream cheese or juice from a fridge, and they have a couple of options for bagel sandwiches, but a lot less than most places I'm used to. I had a toddler with me and they offered a free mini muffin. It had chocolate chips on the top and he enjoyed the heck out of it. My rating really reflects the quality of the bagel and the service, not so much the limited options for sandwiches.

Yelp
First, this place makes maybe the best bagels in the entire area. There may be places around Philly just as good but if there are, I'm not sure where they are. They aren't close by and bagels at places that have all the buzz lately, like Kismet, aren't anywhere nearly as good as the bagels here. The texture of and variety of bagels here are excellent. The issue I have with this place is cost for things that aren't bagels. In particular, their in-house spreads are very expensive to buy in a container and even on a to-go singular bagel. They don't let you use a credit card with out a fee for purchases under $20. So when I went in with five dollars to get one bagel with some cream cheese on it, I figured that would be enough to pay, including tax. I find it absurd that one bagel with some cream cheese is $5.36 with tax, at any place, let alone this place. The best way to enjoy this place, then, is to buy a bag of several bagels, half dozen, a dozen, etc. and avoid their spreads or prepared bagels. It's much more reasonable to buy bulk bagels here, alone.

Yelp
Literally the best bagel shop in all PA!!! Incomparable to any existing bagel shop and the staff is wonderful and helpful!! 7 stars!

Yelp
I finally found a place that knows how to make bagels. It is the kind of place where you don't toast the bagel because it actually has the crusty outside and the soft inside. You can ask for well done and Nick the owner (and bagel master) knows you are talking oven time not toaster time. It the kind of place where the cream cheese is what your tastebuds dream about. No little tubs of grocery store cream cheese here. Instead you get the real stuff that is rich and delicious. You can watch Nick slice your bagel and smear with cream cheese. He will add lox, tomato, onion and even cucumber (my fav). He wraps in paper rather than stuffs in a little paper sheath..and hands it to you to take wherever you plan to eat it. My unexpected stop at New York Bagel, spotted as I drove down Haverford, proved to be the absolute best decision I have made when it comes to one of my favorite bites. I know I will be back.

Yelp
Delicious! I ordered a bagel with lox, cream cheese, red onion and capers and it was great! Good quality and piled high.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Best bagels in Philadelphia! Always fresh and delicious! Also love their cream cheese!

Ankit P.

Yelp
One of Philadelphia's greatest bagels, and the service goes above and beyond what you would expect from a bagel restaurant.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
They're definitely in the "might be as good as anything in New York" conversation. They hit all the texture notes for me. Crusty, chewy, just a little sweet. This isn't a chain bagel. You can tell they know what they're doing.

Tay L.

Yelp
The bagels are solid and the best in the area. My only compliant is they frequently close without posting it online. Can you please begin updating your Google maps business hours so people don't come when you're closed.

Yelp
As a New Yorker born and raised from the Bronx, this spot has earned its right to have New York in its bagel title. All these other NY bagel spots are phony, this location is where it's at. This spot hands down has the best bagels on this side of the Schuylkill. People line up in droves on the weekends to get their hands on these bagels. Every single bagel is homemade, fresh, and plump. The crispness is just right and the bagels really shine when you have lox with them. If your lucky you can get your hands on some of the everything bagel sticks. The bagel sticks dipped in their cream cheese is FUEGO. I come here damn near every morning or every other morning. I apologized to the owner for going to Delancey on a Saturday. I never made that mistake again. Heads up that they are closed on Saturdays. It's mostly cash unless you plan to spend 20 bucks (which I recommend, just freeze the bagels to preserve them).
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
This is without question the best bagel bakery in the Philadelphia area. It's the place to go if you're looking to pick up a dozen bagels for brunch - they bake all the traditional varieties - but sometimes I'll just stop in to buy a "flat", a flat bagel drowning in a topping. It's kosher, so closed Saturdays. And it's pure takeout without a hint of seating.

Caroline E. C.

Yelp
My family and I get these bagels every Sunday. They have been a staple and still taste just as good as when I was a kid and would stand in line with my dad. They are always hot and fresh right out of the oven and don't let the line scare you those workers inside know how to keep a line going. Wait time is always less than 15-20 minutes
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
I wasn't that hungry, just a bit peckish. I'd meant to only eat half an everything bagel...but somehow, I couldn't stop eating and *poof* gone. Not only was the bagel fresh and soft, but the everything seasoning was perfection, not too salty and a bit toasty. The cream cheese is good, too. If you need a fresh bagel, this is the spot. My family says it's the best bagel spot in all of Philly, and I believe it!

Yelp
This is absolutely the best bagel place I have ever been to. Like by far. The guy who runs it, Nick, is a really nice guy. But honestly these bagels speak for themselves. Yes there is a long wait during peak times. Yes he may run out of certain things. Yes he doesn't always have muffins. But these bagels are soooo much better than anything else in the Philadelphia that it's absolutely worth it. Also the muffins are amazing too. If u have not been then this is a 100% must go and be patient. He is a small business and quality is the driver here not speed.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday morning and it was a small line, however expedited as there were plenty of employees to keep it going . Our first visit suggested by google and was not disappointed. We ordered a half dozen of blueberry and egg bagels and they were freshly baked, warm and delicious!! The lox cream cheese did not disappoint us. We are big foodies and this bagel bakery is a firm 5 stars!!

Grace T.

Yelp
Finally bagels worth eating! We used to live much closer to NYC and were shocked by the lack of decent bagels around here. So glad we found this place. They are closed Saturday for Sabbath -- yes, they are authentic!
google avatar

Bob G.

Yelp
I've been to most of the Philly bagelries that everyone is raving about (some because of the sandwiches the make with their bagels). But, if you grew up with real bagels, this is the only place to get them: the true shiny crust and soft chewy insides. Get there when the bagels are still warm and you're in for a treat. Sorry that they're not open Saturdays and other holidays, but it's a small price to pay.

Ron F.

Yelp
Coming here since childhood. I'm now 67. Best bagels period. Just bought bagels. They smell great!

Leigh C.

Yelp
Bagels. Old school. Takeout. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love these bagels.

Yelp
For a few years now, I've wanted to check out this place, even requesting coworkers coming from that direction to bring me bagels. It's never happened, until I was in Bala Cynwyd early one morning, with an hour to kill. Yelp told me that they opened at 6:30, but there weren't any hours posted on the door. I arrived around 6:10 and the place was dark, but there were people inside. No problem, I have time to kill, so I pop in the headphones and rock out for a bit. A few minutes later, I noticed the lights come in and a few minutes after that I noticed an open sign. I walked inside to the heavenly smell of fresh bagels. I was promptly assisted, but I inquired if any other flavors were coming. I opted to wait for the egg bagels to finish, but even if I didn't have time to kill, I'm sure I still would have waited for that. Once I ordered my baker's dozen of pretty much one of each, I left with the biggest smile on my face. These things were huge. Growing up, I was told a tale that the baker's dozen was an extra for the person delivering the food, by my grandfather who was a baker. He would always tell me that when he was selling baked goods, children would be sent to get the family order and he'd give them their choice to eat on the walk home. I've since learned that the baker's dozen really comes from medieval times of cheating customers, but this baker's dozen reminded me of my grandfather. I had to eat on right away in the car, by myself, right away, while it's so hot, no toppings, just gluttony. No regrets. This bagel was cheery, tasty, and so puffy. Slowly, I became so sad, knowing my wife was going to toast these bagels when we got home. You're only supposed to toast bad bagels in my opinion. Wait are there bad bagels? Sub-par maybe? She's going to ruin this beautiful texture, because that's how she eats bagels and I have to stop her. We can toast them tomorrow... Well, she did want them toasted, but we didn't do that. They were so good and even the next day they were still better than most, but we did toast them. Made a nice breakfast sandwich, which was toasty on the outside, but so soft on the inside. Very happy that I finally made it to this place.

Yelp
Best bagels in the Philly area! I periodically buy a baker's dozen and keep them in my freezer to eat over the course of 1-2 weeks.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands Down Best Bagel in Philly.! Hot and Fresh Daily Great lox and whitefish salad.
google avatar

Annie N.

Yelp
Simply the best everything bagel ever! I specially make a trip here just for the bagels. Wish there was one closer to center city! Nice staff! There's a parking lot!
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
I'm in here at least once a week and look forward to it every time. Didn't know bagels can be as good as they are here.
google avatar

G W.

Yelp
Best bagels in the city! Always fresh out of the oven. Cream cheese is great too. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
This as close to a bagel from NYC as I can get. Oddly, it's in an area off street. you might not even find it. the staff were quick for a Sunday morning. This was my first egg bagel (get there early they sell out fast on the weekends). I was kind of surprised I could find a bagel this good in that area, but then again you gotta stop and take a look around I guess.

Nancy H.

Yelp
Everything is delicious. I always enjoy it. They make the best bagels in Philadelphia!
google avatar

Marlene F.

Yelp
Legit bagels!!!!! I'll be a regular here for sure! They have all the spreads too. You can purchase to take home or het it on your bagel. The bagels are big, soft and comparable to NYC. Glad I found this place!

Mark S M.

Yelp
Preordered 2 doz bagels for 7:15am pickup. Long line when I got there at 7:30. No problem. Figured they were super busy because it was Mother's Day. When we opened the bag at home, found some bagels ordered were not included, got way too many of others, and it was hard to tell which were suppose to be the flats. BUT, the biggest disappointment was that about 6 of the bagels were burned beyond being edible. That's 25% of our order. Why someone thought it was acceptable to include those is beyond me. We won't be back soon if ever.

Yelp
My husband went and grabbed a dozen bagels from here while he was waiting for me. The bagels had good flavor, they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were a pretty good size too. I don't know how my husband ate like 5 of them in like a 3 hour period, I ate 2 and was full. They just had all the basic flavors. I like getting a couple weird specialty flavors like French toast, pumpkin etc. but they didn't have anything like that here. The most interesting bagel I got here was Cinnamon raisin. I was hoping to at least get a blueberry but they didn't have it. There wasn't much cream cheese selection either. My husband said the options were either plain or strawberry cream cheese, so he got a tub of plain. Unless he was lying to me, cause he hates flavored cream cheese. Anyway the bagels were pretty good, but it's a no frills bagel place. My husband really enjoyed it. If we're ever in the area early in the morning again, I'm sure he will want to come by again.

Yelp
When it comes to a bagel spot New York bagel is unmatched. As you enter you a greeted by the delicious smell of fresh bagels wafting through the air and the friendly face of nick and the employees. Their tuna is the best out there and their prices and phenomenal bagels are the best. The fish can be pricey but they are always sure to give you a heaving slab of tuna or lox which makes up for it. The awesome experience at New York bagel leaves little to improve earning them five stars.

Larry F.

Yelp
I knew the former owners of the NY Bagel Bakery, the Leibowitzes, for many years while growing up in the Bronx, NY. I used to visit my friend, Howie, when he moved to Philly to open up a bagel bakery in North Wales. I knew his parents and his brothers, Melvin and Alan, as well as his wife, Susan. I used to help out whenever I visited and often sampled the finished product of the delicious bagels being baked there. Unfortunately, my friend Howie passed away many years ago and of course I haven't been back to Haverford Avenue since. I guess the bakery now has many more things to offer besides bagels. I still remember the hot sesame and poppy and pumpernickel bagels coming out of the oven when they were finished. Now that I'm older, I think back to my friend, Howie and his wife, Susan; and, of course, the NY Bagel Bakery on Haverford Avenue in North Wales.
google avatar

Syreeta B.

Yelp
I discovered this bagel shop about a year ago. It is a no frills don't expect a lot bagel shop. They do what they need to do really well...make a really good bagel. They also bake, sell and close. That simple, so after a certain time in the afternoon you can be sure that they may actually be sold out. I get the same thing most times I visit, an everything bagel and whitefish salad. They make all of their spreads in house and the whitefish salad is my absolute favorite. I have also had the egg and plain bagel from here which are really good as well. The prices are reasonable and the gentleman and ladies at the counter are always helpful. I am also happy that now they take debit cards. From what I see they also do catering trays if you call ahead.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Some of the best you can find!! My kids love the chop chop mini muffin they give too :)

Ron H.

Yelp
Best bagels I've ever had. Selection can be limited in the afternoon. Good to check count, as I've gotten home to find I'm one bagel short.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Yum, delicious! Didn't realize that I could access NY quality bagel outside of NY!! Their bagels have a nice shell with soft soft soft, chewy inside that's just absolute perfection. The best ones in terms of bagel texture has to be the egg and everything! So fluffy on the inside. Their cream cheese is also a must -- I tried the sun-dried tomato and vegetable, and sun-dried tomato was my favorite.
google avatar

Emme C.

Yelp
The best bagels in Philly! We first got these bagels on our wedding morning and they were so fresh. They are reasonably priced and the staff are extremely friendly. We recommend the everything and the salt bagels.
google avatar

Todd Z.

Yelp
Best bagels around, and closest thing you'll find in the area to an actual NY bagel. This is from someone raised on NY bagels, so I consider myself an expert on the subject. I always enjoy these!!
google avatar

Regina M.

Yelp
Seriously, the best bagels in Philadelphia, hands down. New York Bagel Bakery has been in business for a very long time. As in, back when I was a teenager I remember getting bagels there. There's a reason for that: They do one thing, and they do it exceptionally and consistently well. This is a bagel bakery, plain and simple. There's a counter, racks with many varieties of bagels & some muffins, a refrigerated cooler with varieties of cream cheese. A robust community bulletin board. Behind the counter and racks, the baking operation. No cakes, pies, cookies, donuts. The only wedding cake you're getting here is one made of bagels...which isn't a bad idea. Insider tip: If you're someone who likes to toast their bagels, and/or you eat them fast, check out the day-old bagels, bagged on a front shelf for you to select from. Half dozen for $1.50 and they are very good. Bakery is open 6 days a week - closed on Saturdays - starting at 6:30 AM. They're tucked into an old strip center behind the McDonald's on Haverford Ave at City Line Ave. Center has a very visible entrance on Haverford and a slightly more hidden but marked entrance on City Line - in between office type buildings. Easy free parking in their lot.

Francesco R.

Yelp
absolutely terrific bagels. about every other month I randomly swing through here on a Sunday morning to grab a baker's dozen. it will set you back a decent penny that's why I only come occasionally but they are definitely good bagels
google avatar

Kathryn A.

Yelp
These are some of the softest, tastiest bagels I've had. They are quite delicious. The prices are a little higher than I'm used to, but I guess you can charge a premium for being one of the only bagel shops in the area. I got a bagel and cream cheese which I thoroughly enjoyed. They do not have a large selection of bagels and they don't offer breakfast sandwiches per se, but if you are willing to overlook that or you just want a good bagel, give this place a try.

David H.

Yelp
The name don't lie: this is as close to a NY bagel as you can get in Philly. Well worth the drive.
google avatar

Mary O.

Yelp
Good bagels, closest to a true New York bagel. The bagels have a nice chew but crusty exterior. I usually get a white fish salad on a whole wheat bagel and it's very filling. The line varies but I usually call my order in. Only 2 cons is that they don't do meats like a bacon, egg, and cheese, and they can be pricey.
google avatar

Jill B.

Yelp
Was in town from Chicago and craving a good bagel. My friend stumbled upon this place on Yelp, and I'm so glad she did. She had a Lox bagel that was delicious. I had an everything bagel with Lox cream cheese that was equally good. The bagels were fresh and had just the right amount of crunch on the outside. The lox was great too. I would definitely be a regular if I lived in the area so that I could try all of the other things on the menu (hello whitefish!).
google avatar

Dan P.

Yelp
It's all about the bagels. They have the real New York flavor. Traditional varieties only- no cheddar jalapeño or asiago kiwi here. Gives the place a feel of purity.

Julie P.

Yelp
The bagels here are so good that any others only disappoint- they are just far superior in taste and texture. Service is friendly. We even send them to our kid at college!
