"The hotel’s famously lavish café presents a Disneyfied take on Belle Époque café society: ornate décor and theatrical presentation draw cruise-weary tourists who linger over goulash, pose for selfies, and indulge in an escapist, staged version of historic urban café life." - Chris Wallace Chris Wallace Chris Wallace is a New York-based writer and photographer. Over 125 years old, it was the nicest cafe in the world at the time it was built where artists and writers gathered. Nowadays, they have lots of foie gras on the menu. Bourdain ate: goose liver terrine, pork throttle stew. Lunch date: Peter Zilahy, poet and performing artist.

Absolutely stunning! Wow. We arrived early as recommended, so we hardly had to wait (after 8:30am the line gets very long and you can’t reserve in advance for mornings). There was a pianist playing lovely music, and the atmosphere was simply breathtaking. The food was quite nice, with delicious pastries. The staff were polite, though not exceptionally attentive. Still, overall it was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it!

I arrived at about 8:45am on a Tuesday. The very nice hostess told me if I waited for a short time, she’ll give me the first table to come available. I waited 10 minutes she got me a great table right at the window. It was just myself. I had just a cappuccino (I already ate breakfast) and sat to enjoy the live piano music. I liked it and the prices were very reasonable. Judging from the menu, I would say this draws it back from a very high level of opulence that it could have. The cuisine caters to tourists on a budget, versus a higher end experience (from what I could tell). This makes it more accessible for sure. The service was very good (especially the hostess), the ambience was perfect. It’s worth a visit.

A disappointing return to the New York Café – a tourist trap and not even a good one. What was meant to be a special evening in Budapest turned into a real disappointment. Having visited the New York Café several years ago and enjoying that experience, I was genuinely looking forward to returning. Unfortunately, tonight's visit fell far short of expectations. The service was abysmal—slow, inattentive, and unfriendly. To add insult to injury, we were charged twice for the service fee, resulting in an absurdly expensive bill for an experience that was anything but premium. The food was equally underwhelming—uninspired, bland, and definitely not worth the price tag. Even the atmosphere, which the café is supposedly famous for, failed to deliver. We were seated in a corner off to the side, far from the live music, so the charm and elegance the venue is known for were completely lost on us. As many other reviews have pointed out, this cafe is all style over substance, and not worth your time or money. Save both and spend them somewhere you’ll actually feel welcome and won’t leave regretting having visited. Even the famous décor isn’t worth popping in for a photo. A true letdown in an otherwise beautiful city.

had such a wonderful experience at New York Caffe! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a perfect blend of modern style and cozy charm. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel welcome from the very first moment. The coffee is rich and flavorful, and the selection of drinks and desserts is truly impressive. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy great service, and lose track of time in the best way. Definitely a spot I would recommend to anyone looking for a special café experience.

Unfortunately a tourist trap. Obviously a stunning interior and the musicians were incredible. Hence at least 2*. However, the food and drink is incredibly overcharged and underwhelming in quality. €11 for a coffee or lemonade. Pastrami Bagel was decent, but nothing I couldn’t make at home and it tasted weirdly similar to Burger King… certainly not worth the price. The cherry on top was the mandatory service charge, which doesn’t go to the staff so you then have to tip on top. Different staff told me different things. One told me it was Tax. One told me it pays for the building. I see other reviewers were told it pays for musicians. Either way, clearly a way of further ripping customers off. Walk in, get your photos, then go get a quality lunch from an honest cafe and support a local business instead.

The New York Café in Budapest is undeniably stunning — the décor is absolutely grand and feels like stepping into a palace. The ceilings, chandeliers, and overall atmosphere make it one of the most beautiful cafés I’ve ever seen. That said, the experience didn’t quite live up to the visual spectacle. The line to get in was a bit long, and once seated, the service was noticeably slow. For the price point (which is quite high), I expected more attentive service and better overall organization. The food and drinks were decent, but you’re definitely paying more for the ambiance than the culinary experience. Whether it’s “worth it” depends on what you’re looking for — if you’re into history, architecture, or photography, it’s a must-see. But if you’re just after a great coffee or meal, there are probably better options in Budapest. Worth seeing at least once, but manage your expectations.

Tourist trap mainly catering to older visitors looking to take photos. Food ranges from average to decent, but it’s not worth the overpriced menu. There are plenty of cafés with much better food, properly brewed coffee (not burnt or bitter), and — most importantly — better service. The waiters here seem completely uninterested in actually serving customers, which makes the whole experience disappointing. If all you want is a picture, you’re better off paying the small fee to visit the Opera House instead.

We only visited the restaurant. It is a beautiful cafe. The history is that it was the New York Insurance company building and they basically went all out on the construction. Totally stunning interior. We waited maximum 5 minutes but it was a bit later. We came for just dessert and coffee. I think they could offer better dessert options. They really didn't have a cake, which is what we wanted. The "cake" is a 1cm sponge with a bunch of mouse on top. It wasn't cake but it tasted okay. The price is high for most items. You are definitely paying to look at the interior of the building and take photos, which is what most people were doing - walking around taking photos and being in the servers way. Go one time and that's enough
