11 Top Restaurants Along Steinway Street in Astoria | Eater NY

"How far can a bagel shop go in its pursuit of becoming a full restaurant? The number of bagel types and flavors of cream cheese — plus the salads like tuna or whitefish to be spread over the tops — is either thrilling or discouraging, depending on whether you’re a bagel purist or not. The bagels here tend to be big and doughy, making for very filling sandwiches. The coffee is good, and the seating ample inside and out, which is why many enjoy lingering here." - Robert Sietsema

Really good gluten free bagels! Like so good, I was actually questioning if it was gluten. But I survived, so they were in fact gluten free. I got the GF cinnamon raisin with cinnamon walnut tofu cream cheese. Highly recommend for gluten free and vegan options!

Google
Chunky bagel was my first thought. Unwrapped it like a christmas present. Everything bagel toasted with cream cheese. Wow what a portion of CC! So much its spilling out onto my finger, getting everywhere. I love it! Everything bagel is covered in.. everything. Both sides. They are definately not stingy. The lady at the counter was friendly and informative with a smile. She did get my order wrong though so I have to mention. My latte was supposed to have 1%, not skim. Believe me, it makes a difference in taste. The meal came out to $8.45. What a deal! Ok back to eating. Special mention for the holiday decorations.

Had to try an authentic New York Bagel. We had a toasted mini everything bagel with plain cream cheese as well as a toasted mini everything bagel with bacon, egg and avocado as well as a coffee and cappuccino. Mini’s are pretty big so be aware if you order the full size bagel! Both bagels were fresh and classically NY chewy. A bit pricy ($25 for the order) but you have to try it t least once.

Google
I love their bagels and their many tempting varieties. 😋😋 Normally I get what they call mini bagels, plain or cinnamon/ raisin that are more like generous regular size "European" bagels! 👍 Here they also have huge tempting muffins... that are truly delicious that are a real treat with a cup of coffee! 😊👍😊

Google
I was ordering breakfast this morning and wanted a waffle with bacon on the side but could not find a place on the delivery app to request the bacon. So, I called the restaurant and spoke to Christina who was very nice and helpful. She advised me how to request that side when I placed my order. I did so and sure enough it was delivered! I appreciate a restaurant that has someone helpful answer the phone. Thank you!

Google
Accessible bagel shop with huge selections from sandwiches, quiches, cakes to cookies. Food was overall ok but friendly prices for sure. I got a spinach quiche and a macadamia cookie. The quiche was slightly oily for me, and the cookie was too dry. Coffee was fine! The other day I had their 🥯bagel, outstanding of course!

Google
Spacious bagel shop with plenty of seats inside. They have many bagel flavors, and what I like is that they have three sizes of bagels: mini, flat, and regular. This way, you can choose how much bread you want! I got the flat bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese, and I like it a lot. Also, they have fresh OJ!

Google
We ordered it by Door Dash. The food was amazing. We had a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese. Amazing. We wanted a New York bagel and we were NOT disappointed at all. Coffee was also amazing. When I make it back to NY, I will definitely be ordering from here again. If you are visiting NY, you must eat here.

Yelp
When I'm craving a bagel, I end up here. I like that they have mini bagel sizes so I didn't have to commit to a full size. It's a decent breakfast/lunch spot with coffee, apple cider, and other beverage options. Space is big and but somehow feels cozy and warm, as if it's fall weather year round. Service is straightforward, no special treatment. The one down side is their one bathroom.

Yelp
Did you even visit NY if you didn't get an NYC bagel? NYCB&C is the real deal. The options for bagels and spreads are endless (including many vegan options). Everything I ate was phenomenal. The service was quick. We received our food just minutes after ordering. The interior was clean and welcoming. I got an egg everything bagel with egg salad. They really hook you up with the spread. They put enough on there to fill you up for a long while. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the Astoria area.

Yelp
My Dr. Office is around the corner and I come in here every few weeks..it's a great spot! Delicious food, friendly people, and cool place for breakfast, lunch, or just a nice cup of coffee. Definitely stop in. ENJOY!

Yelp
The best bagel shop in the area with a great BEC. Food - The bagels are big and fresh. There are many options for cream cheese, but I typically do a BEC and theirs is great. The coffee is so so. Service - The place is typically busy so there is some waiting involved. Ambiance - The shop has a rustic feel with plenty of seating inside and outside.

Yelp
I had a problem with my husband's order and the gentleman on the phone was so kind and helpful. He made my morning! And the Banana muffins are "LIFE"!
google avatar

Dave A.

Yelp
Based on dozens of times coming here and frequent mistakes made on the order, best advise is to check your order before stepping out the door. Some staff aren't really friendly. Get short with you and scream behind the counter which isnt the type of morning vibe a lot of people are looking for. Prices are a bit higher than your run of the mill shop/ deli but the premium is worth if...if they get your order right.

Yelp
There are a ton of bagel places in the area, making the competition quite fierce for finding the right bagel in a place like Queens. The spot is particularly convenient given its ample seating, spacious lighting, and wide menu of options, including pastries, bagels, sandwiches, wraps, coffee, selection, and other options. The staff and friendly and serve you quickly, even if there's a long line. It's nice to sit at the bar tables and look out on the bustling street but the food isn't special and the prices aren't a steal. Above all there are so many great places to eat in Astoria that it's almost an unfair battle to compare this one to others in the local area. Overall a good place to pick up breakfast or lunch but not a sustainable "A-list" location.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday morning for some breakfast and to do some work and didn't leave disappointed! The place was busier than we would expect for a weekday, but we got our food and drinks relatively quickly. Service was also pretty kind. There's a ton of seating with several outlets available so there wasn't any concern for us in getting a seat and being able to access their wifi to do work. It was relatively calm and quiet minus a few other talking parties, but they weren't overly loud or obnoxious at all. The bagel was a little lighter than I would have preferred in terms of filling, but it was otherwise well-made - good texture and tasty cream cheese. The matcha drink I got wasn't too sweet and tasted very pleasant overall. The experience was pretty nice and I wouldn't mind coming back again in the future to try their other foods and drinks!

Yelp
Easy go to for a bagel in Astoria! I got a 2 eggs and meat on a French toast bagel and it was a hit. This was my first time trying a French toast bagel and I feel like it was the perfect combo with the eggs and sausage. It felt like I was eating a full breakfast in bagel/Sandwich form. The subtle sweetness of the bagel really complimented the saltiness of the eggs and sausage. The bagel was also very fresh. I do like that they have a variety of bagel options and there is a lot of space to sit inside as well!

Yelp
I came here for breakfast with family that was visiting from out of state and we loved it. The coffee (the most important part) is excellent and the bagels were delicious. They even had rainbow bagels for my little nieces. There are numerous flavored spreads for the bagels. Service was fast and accurate. You pick up your food & drinks from the counter and take them to your seats. The seating is very simple wood tables & chairs (very rustic), but quite comfortable. The place does get busy and finding a seat can be a bit challenging at times, but on a nice day there is also an outdoor seating option. I have gone back by myself a couple of times just for coffee and am never disappointed. If you're nearby, it's definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious bagels, and a terrific bacon, egg, and cheese. The quality of the sandwich is superior to their rival up the street, Brooklyn Bagel. Eggs were perfect, bacon was flavorful, and the cheese was melted to perfection.
google avatar

Yelp
Ideally, this is the spot for you if you are craving massive bagels with a generous amount of spread. They have non dairy cream cheese options, such as the tofu cream cheese. They have a wide selection of bagels and cream cheese in general, so the possibilities are endless. Their espresso drinks are good & they have pastries like muffins too! They are friendly and most definitely affordable and quick!

B T.

Yelp
Kind service, especially the employees that have worked there a while. Spacious with outdoor seating, music isn't too loud thankfully. A few items are quite good. The bagels are large. Unfortunately, the eggs here are so overcooked they have been grey inside the sandwich. Tried multiple times and kept happening. Unfortunately an important aspect for a bagel shop. Have also been given stale bakery items that you could tell were from the grocery store next door when they ran out of their usual items. This plus being very overpriced in comparison to all other bagel shops in the area (double the price in one case) make it an every-once-in-a-while place and for very specific 1-2 items only.

Yelp
My favorite everything bagel in the neighborhood! They make a great BEC and the coffee is also delicious!

Yelp
This is my favorite of the NYCBH chain in Astoria. They've always been quick and efficient on the line. No attitude or problems with service in my experience. I cannot speak for orders being messed up because I'm not one of those with complicated orders and I avoid peak times. What I love the most is the available tables and WiFi in a climate controlled space. To be fair I try to get settled after the lunch crowd leaves and I always order way more food/drinks than most. Places like Panera and Starbucks purposely crank up the A/C when it's freezing outside to make us as uncomfortable as possible. Screw them. I would rather give my money to an independently-owned business that provides an amazing variety of food and drinks. You can find an assortment of cakes, pies, muffins, croissants, cookies from Martha's Bakery. They have daily soup specials like New England Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque. Any type of eggs, bagels, cream cheese, sandwiches, coffees, smoothies you can imagine... even pancakes and waffles. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Yelp
I really liked this place and then was ready to write it off after they messed up my 2 egg sandwich twice (legit forgot the eggs both times...). So I decided to give them a call instead of bashing them to figure out why this had happened on two simultaneous occasions now. John (I assume the manager or owner of the place) was extremely nice and apologetic and even remade my sandwich and hand delivered it to me - I just wanted to note how much I appreciate this kind of service and accountability. I think it shows the store's character and I'll definitely be back again for that sandwich (well wrap) - thanks again John! :)

Yelp
For someone who gets the same Iced Latte every single time I knew the second I saw this that it was not what I ordered and once I tasted it , it was confirmed. This was a black cold brew with a drop of milk. Not even close to what I ordered. I ordered an iced French vanilla latte. At first I thought I got someone else's order but it had my name on it and it was labeled to be what I ordered. I tried to make the best of it but It was terrible regardless and ended up throwing it out. How does a business mess up an order of ONE drink. No excuse for that. Also - just to add, my fiancé who it an avid cold brew / black coffee drinker tasted this before I tossed it with hopes we can savor it and he said this was the worst coffee he's ever tasted.

Mauricio H.

Yelp
Such a nasty attitude! Don't be mad people are walking in right at 6:03am, door open, lights on and everything. Absolutely no reason for her to yell at the customer: "IM NOT READY YET!!" Lock the fucken door up and open once you are finally ready to start taking orders!!! The tip box looking at customers front and center is kinda funny after having witnessed this tho!

Connie L.

Yelp
Pro: a wide variety of creme cheese, delicious bagels, coffee and very fast Con: they charge an additional fee called "Operating Fee" of 4.3% of the subtotal not sure why?
google avatar

Michee C.

Yelp
Never been here till recently and it's a nice place. Spacious, good amount of tables, good service and it's fairly priced I would say. Ordered an egg, ham and spinach on a bialey and a whole wheat bagel with lox and onions. There was a good amount of lox inside with a heavy hand of cream cheese. They didn't skimp on ingredients, the ratio of bread to filling was done well, because other places like Brooklyn bagel and coffee company doesn't give enough lox. I would come back for more bagels and try their coffee and teas
google avatar

Sabrina G.

Yelp
Their bagels are very good, the taste is amazing! I tried a chocolate muffin and it was pretty good too. But their coffee tastes TERRIBLE! I don't know what it is, but to me it tastes nasty as hell. I tried the cappuccino, I tried latte, I tried americano and also espresso. Woody taste with butter and moldy aftertaste. Idk. They have a lot of tables, so you can sit and work on your computer if you want, there's a lot of space. Service is okay, nothing too special to say about who works there, they're fast as they can and rarely mess up their orders
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
Meh! Standard NYC Bagel-fare in a vibrant Queens neighborhood. They have all the bagels and cream cheese flavors. Coffee is average. Could have gotten another star if the server had gotten my pretty simple buttered bagel order right.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Wow! Who would of known that this place could slip from a 5 star review 9 months ago to a 2 star review today. I ordered a poppy seed bagel with lox and cream cheese ( $14 ) and what I got was a stale bagel with a very skimpy portion of lox. But don't take my word for it, look at the pictures.

Yelp
One of my goals in life is to try every bagel new york has to offer and the best cafes to study and get work done at. Fortunately, a friend recommended this place for a work date so I didn't have to look too hard. The store is massive with many tables and outlets and free wifi, which made it super convenient to stay and get work done. Their selection of food is also quite extensive with breakfast items to lunch items. Even if the food doesn't suit your taste, they also had so many drinks to choose from. I arrived super early around 8AM and there was already a rather decent line for food. Finding seating is usually not a problem because they're are so many tables, unless of course you're a large group. I ordered the iced americano (4/5) which is pretty decent. The espresso wasn't too butter or sour but it was definitely watered down, im guessing the espresso to water ratio was off. I also ordered a bacon, egg, and mozzarella cheese on a everything bagel (4/5). Rule 1: dont swap the classic American cheese out for mozzarella, because I couldn't even taste it. I could see that the cheese was there and that was my only clue that I ordered it with cheese otherwise it tasted just like eggs and bacon. The bagel was pretty dry and a bit rubbery so it was a bit hard to bite through. Otherwise, the eggs were great and the bacon was salty but not too much, and I would definitely get it again. Overall, though this cafe is a bit out of the way, the great food and the abundance of outlets makes this the perfect spot to get together with friends and work (all day) since they have good and reliable food options and a strong wifi connection :). Definitely recommend stopping by, would try their dessert options next time for sure.

Yelp
Bagel was decent but so little tuna. Nearby locations seems more generous with portions with better prices.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
My favorite bagel place! The bagels are so good and I am never disappointed with any of the orders I've made at this location.
google avatar

Nadia A.

Yelp
Very tasty cream cheese, extra creamy. They have a lot of flavors but I do find the prices very expensive. Over $6 for a bagel and cream cheese. The bagels are big but the taste is average. I got the rainbow bagel and it was quite sweet, they said it would taste like a plain bagel but I found it to be on the sweet aside
google avatar

CJ R.

Yelp
Given that I am from New York and have, they said so many wonderful, amazing bagel places this New York City bagel one in Astoria is hit or miss. Their cranberry chicken salad sandwich tasteless. It feels like it needed more salt and pepper and some Cajun seasoning. The coffee OMG it's horrible I mean where can you get a coffee like that felt like it's just disgusting especially if you're in a rush on a Monday morning.
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
Wish I saw another comment that said to check your order before you leave... I ordered and paid for a regular plain bagel, if they didn't have any it would've been nice if they just told me. Instead they give me a small ass bagel. It wasn't even that busy for there to be a mix-up like that This place is overpriced and overrated
google avatar

Chuck K.

Yelp
To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the bagels here. I find them to be way too thick, which becomes problematic if you get cream cheese or a bacon, egg & cheese. However, I am a HUGE fan of the muffins, which are my go-tos. I highly recommend the cranberry/orange, pistachio, and cappuccino muffins. The inside of the eatery is beautiful and always decorated festively for the season.
google avatar

Barbara F.

Yelp
I'm in town visiting my son, daughter-in-law and grandkids and we started the tradition of getting a rainbow bagel the last time I visited. However we to another bagel shop across the street. My son switched to this one because he said the one across the street had had too many unsatisfactory visits and they decided to give this one a try; and now it's their new favorite. We each got a french toast bagel with lox, capers, tomato, onion and cream cheese. It was absolutely delicious! And big enough for both breakfast and lunch! We also got the traditional rainbow bagel of which I provided a picture. The bagels are pretty big - they seem much bigger than bagel in the Indianapolis, IN area.

Yelp
Over the past few months I've been trekking up (really just walking and sometimes running) from Sunnyside on Saturday mornings to get my bagel fix in. For the past many-a-times, it ended up being Brooklyn Bagel as that was the first bagel place. However, this past weekend the line around 11am was out the door and didn't feel like waiting 15-20 minutes, potentially in brisk weather, outside for bagels. Therefore, I trekked down here. Living in Astoria between 2017-18, I was always wondering what would come up as the commercial space beneath the Astor Broadway apartments. I was delighted to see this bagel shop open up last year, but never bothered to come till now because either the subways were not running on the weekend (facts) or worse off the subway station itself was closed. So lo and behold, I made it here. Unlike Brooklyn Bagel (which I still love), the lines don't extend out the door because the space itself is huge. Tons of seating and tons of room for lines to form. This particular morning, the line wasn't terribly long so it moved quickly. Very organized, efficient, and a few cashiers to expedite the long lines. I ordered my traditional egg and cheddar on an everything bagel. I've mixed in the mini everything recently, but those weren't available when I was in line and didn't feel like waiting very long for them to come out. Surprisingly, the bagel came out quickly. Waited maybe less than a couple minutes. I was pleased. The bagel itself tasted pretty damn good too. Good job! Like I said, there's plenty of space to sit here if you like. It was pretty full when I was there, but the people shift in and out. The bagel is $5, but you gotta expect it'll be somewhere between $4-5 anywhere from here to even in NJ where I grew up at. I do recommend coming here (especially if Brooklyn Bagel's lines are out the door)

Yelp
New Yorkers always rave about their bagels and how bagels in other places are not up to the standard, so I decided to check out New York City Bagel and see what the whole "NYC bagel" thing was all about. This location is in the heard of Astoria in a bustling neighborhood and has plenty of comfortable tables and space to hang out. The space is modern, clean and filled with natural light which makes it really attractive and hip. AS advertised, the main attractions are the bagels , there are a lot of bagels (small and regular in size) that span multiple flavors and toppings. They even have a gluten free bagel!. The cream cheese selection is also varied and offers too many flavoring and options to remember, all in low fat and full fat varieties. I went with the toasted everything bagel and chose a Chipotle cream cheese to go with it and it did not disappoint. It was really filling and delicious and it was an excellent way to start the day.
google avatar

Susanna M.

Yelp
Really relaxed atmosphere and constant traffic in and out. You can tell this is a popular bagel spot in the neighborhood and I can see why. The bagels are great and we'll priced. I got a mini whole wheat with Lox spread and my friend got a large garlic with. Flavored cream cheese. Both were tasty. The coffee is fresh and they make an actually good chai which can be hard to find. Service is fast and you can usually find a spot to sit.
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
I've had bagels and coffee here twice, and they provide a great chocolate croissant as well. Balanced iced lattes, friendly staff, and bagel sandwiches that can be split into multiple meals.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
If you are looking for gluten free, I wouldn't recommend here. The staff is nice and fast but they be gluten free bagels are kept in a bun under & in between all of the other bagels. There is no way to keep them decontaminated. On top of that, they don't cook the bagels through fully when making them so it's like raw dough on the inside. If you get it toasted, its burnt to a crisp. So it's definitely not guaranteed gluten free, undercooked yet burnt. Go for anything other than those that need a gluten free bagel. I was so excited to have a nearby place with gluten free bagels but seeing the way they are kept, will ensure I never return. Brooklyn Bagel is the best in Astoria for gluten free. Go there instead.
google avatar

Vanessa W.

Yelp
Friendly staff and plenty of options! I'm a fan of their egg everything and standard everything bagels - they're not overwhelmingly salty as some places. They also have some other unique flavors like their French toast bagel. I really like that you can customize your meat, egg, and cheese sandwiches with various cheese and meats other than just ham and bacon, like prosciutto and pastrami! The shrimp and crab meat salad is delicious and refreshing. And the white fish salad is flavorful. Can't wait to try more combinations of flavors!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Went here right after my ramen stop. I ordered a toasted cinnamon raisin with lox spread. They got my order wrong and were quick to rectify the mistake but I didn't like the fact when they told me that the receipt said sesame as if they were implying it was MY mistake, not a cool move. The bagel was good, though it wasnt fully toasted, just half way in my opinion. The lox spread could be a tad bit saltier as it was slightly bland but overall still a good spread. Not a bad spot, I like their menu options. They have freaking Belgian waffles!
google avatar

Tara W.

Yelp
This is an amazing market place literally a block away from broadway subway! We have been waiting for them to open up and now they finally opened up and it is clean and spacious I just love the coffee and their muffins- toasted in butter. They are open for take out and thank you for opening In a time like this.
google avatar

Yasmine A.

Yelp
I come here often for coffee which is good but I was disappointed to find a hair and a random scrap of food in my eggs for the price I pay I don't expect these kind of mess ups ...definitely turned me off
google avatar

Kristi F.

Yelp
This was the first bagel that I ate in the NYC area and I was very impressed. The shrimp salad was suggested to me and I was highly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. There are a million shrimp in that spread and it kept me full all day. Their veggie cream cheese is my second pick on a sesame bagel. Good bagels, good coffee and friendly staff!
google avatar

Aliberk U.

Yelp
Think twice or check carefully your order in this place. I saw rotten blueberry on my pie.
google avatar

Ella R.

Yelp
Perfect schmear to bagel ratio. Efficient service. Strong coffee. What more is there to say?
google avatar

Kristine N.

Yelp
Big bagels, generous amount of cream cheese, prompt service: pretty much all I want for a Sunday morning breakfast. They have tofu cinnamon raisin cream cheese which I haven't seen anywhere else, along with the standard veggie ones. They make a good chai tea latte with oat milk as well. Besides the bagels there's also a cabinet with desserts like cake, cookies, muffins, and crumb cake.

Caleb B.

Yelp
I haven't been here in awhile but this morning at 8:47 AM on station 2 for order 135, when I went to pick up some bagels for my boss and coworkers I was charged $22.41 for 2 bagels and 1 medium cream cheese. I was shocked at how much it was (I don't make a lot of money so it's a blow to my bank account, however I love my colleagues). I thought "hey this is New York and we live in America where prices are just shooting up." I get to work, open it up and miss P. Rena must have needed another cup of coffee or more sleep because she charged my for this jumbo sized container of BUTTER for TWO bagels!!!!????? LIKE WTF? What was going through her head? I'd like some bagels with my butter? Please watch out for them overcharging you like that. New York is expensive but not THAT expensive. I used to take my family here when they would visit but I will be going to Brooklyn Bagels from now on.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
I really like this place. It's warm and inviting with so much seating. They have regular sized bagels (I feel like they're bigger than average) and the mini sized bagels (slightly smaller than the average bagel). They have a wide assortment of cream cheese (they have tropical mango cream cheese- never saw it anywhere else). Their staff are quite friendly and the place is clean. They also offer a wide selection of espresso drinks including Greek frap! If you've travelled to Greece, you've definitely had a Greek frap.
google avatar

Ritesh B.

Yelp
Very good bagels but they just increased the price so almost $6 for a bagel with cream cheese. Definitely won't be going as often as I used to.
google avatar

Suzumi A.

Yelp
It was a pretty good bagel shop. So many options of bagels and cream cheese. Everything bagel was a bit too salty, but other than that, garlic bagel was good, so as lox spread.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
The best and kindest bagel place with the best atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor seating great music, quick and friendly service. This place is such a treat!
