New York Deli

Food was so amazing here! More than just a deli. They also have great hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. The cheesecake is made in-house and is the icing on the cake so to speak. The roof top is great when the weather is nice. My family and I were able to eat on the rooftop during our trip. Service as also fast and friendly. We will definitely be back!

We weren't greeted upon entry, so I wasn't sure if we should seat ourselves. Then, a man in a conversation seemed to offer help finding a seat. That was our first red flag. It took a long time for our food to arrive, and mine was cold. I ordered the street tacos, which were average. The server hovered over me while I paid, as if I might run off with the device. Please allow customers to check their bills privately without feeling pressured. The menu was disorganized, offering items from chicken and waffles to orange chicken and rice, to street tacos. We expected a variety like a New York Deli, which was misleading. I’m puzzled how the rating stayed so high. Service was mediocre, like the food. I do not recommend.

This feels like more of a bar than a restaurant/deli (and isn't really like a New York City deli at all), but overall we had a great time, thanks to friendly bar staff and great music. The chicken was a tad overfried-- was more crust than meat--but was still tasty. I'd return!

Good food and cute ambience inside! The onion rings were a favorite at our table. I need to come back and sit on the rooftop, we had to sit on the patio this time because we had our dog with us. Our waiter was very kind!

The food was delicious! We purchased the street tacos (two pulled pork, one shrimp) as well as a full size southwestern salad. The food came out quickly and the server was nice. Would recommend!

Got their Southwest salad and street tacos. The large salad was a generous portion. The tacos were good. I got both the shrimp and BBQ pulled pork. Definitely preferred the pulled pork.

This cute little deli is a delightful little lunch stop while you are shopping in Carytown. The wait staff is extremely polite and the food portions are quite large. Because it is on Cary Street you will need to find parking somewhere close and walk there. Lunch was two entrees and two drinks with tip it was $50.

Went here back in March 2025. Called during the week to ask about the rooftop patio availability for a Saturday lunch since we had a large party. They told me the rooftop opened at 12pm. We show up at 12pm, and they said an employee did not show up on time so it will be open at 12:30pm. We wait. At 12:30pm we check again and they said that the employee didn't show up so the rooftop will not be open. They offer us a table inside which is very dark and loud. The food is reasonably priced and tasted fine but we were annoyed we wasted 30 minutes waiting for the rooftop just to sit inside. We were not the only ones waiting for the rooftop and it never opened. I've been to Carytown on several occasions since then and have never seen the rooftop open. Maybe it is only open at night? Tldr: don't go expecting the rooftop to be open for lunch.

Stopped by this deli for brunch because galaxy diner was sadly closed, but we had a great time with heart food here. First, the mango milkshake is delicious, and we also tried the sunrise breakfast sandwich, which was hearty and perfect! My friend got a side of house made kimchi - don't skip out on this! And great value for the food

Great little deli. We stopped in during the watermelon festival. They had a limited menu but had some great items on the menu. We had the sailor sandwich and a Reuben and both were so tasty. Our waitress was very nice. Her service was efficient and helpful. The meal came out so fast and it really was very good. The room was electric with people talking and laughing. Great little deli. I will return to try other menu items.

Yes the food is good, they have a great menu with a lot of options. My daughter got a chicken ceasar wrap and fries. The bartender took our order, gave suggestions and was easy on the eyes too lol. It was mother's day and While we waited we looked around, considered the mother's Day specials and noticed how cozy and invite bar and restaurant was. The food was ready fairly quick and we took it to a picnic in Byrd park. I would highly recommend them.

First time to this place after living in Richmond for 3 years was mostly a success! We arrived around 1pm on a sunny, warm Saturday and there were still a couple of seats left on the rooftop, which was a great surprise. The service was slow to start, but once the server noticed us, the flow of food and drinks was quick and easy from there. The food is nothing to write home about at all, but it was okay for munching while enjoying the sunshine and drinks. The drinks were really good and fairly reasonably priced. This is definitely a place to come to hang out rather than to sit down for a good meal, but that's exactly the vibe I was looking for. Also... don't forget your sunscreen.

Food was great, good service too, and the atmosphere was very festive (went during Christmas). There was a minor issue, the egg from the the sailor sandwich was placed on the club sandwich, but they took care of it right away. Recommend!

Stopped in for a quick bite and had a great time! Everyone was so friendly, and the food came out so fast! We tried to get a seat on the new rooftop but unfortunately it was all taken up, but inside and the patio is very spacious.

We visited the location in Carytown and it was worth it! I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap with House chips and it was quite yummy. The homemade chips were so crispy but on the thick side which I loved. Service was on point and the ambiance was historic and lively!

The interior of the restaurant is very inviting and colorful. The pretzel with beer cheese was absolutely delicious and tasted homemade and fresh. The Italian was a bit messy, but the flavors went along brilliantly. And though it's a dollar upcharge, I highly reccomend the plantains as a side. Overall, a lovely restaurant in the heart of Carytown.

Spinach artichoke dip & the Sailor sandwich were both great. Service was friendly and speedy. I liked the ambiance too. Definitely will come back

This used to be a great hang out spot with simple food and a very fun night life. DJ, dancing, outside patio, and great vibes. Bartenders and servers always seemed like they were happy to work there. Now... They updated the menu to create more of an upscale vibe ever since the rooftop opened, but the quality of the food didn't really go up with the price. I used to think of it as the top choice to grab a bite to eat, or to go out with friends late on the weekends in Cary town but they really have gone downhill and it's sad to see. The most alarming part is there have recently been multiple fights, specifically drunk men have been assaulting women and actually punching them. I've seen with my own eyes security just letting it happen and it's gotten to the point where it was reported on the local news and the victims were interviewed... I also have a friend who I have seen first hand hand followed around by and hit on by one the security guards after she has told him to stop multiple times. She won't even go there anymore because it was so uncomfortable. It also used to be a very "Richmond" vibe of all races sexualities and ages which is why it was so enjoyable there. It's become very "fratty" and any sign of anything pride related has quietly been taken down... which for Cary town is very interesting... Get it together guys

I love the local vibes and great food at Deli. I appreciate that the staff remember me every time I visit. Braxton is my favorite server. She is friendly, efficient and has great customer service. This is a fun place to have brunch or have cocktails. It's my go to for meeting friends or a night out. Lots of fun themed events to enjoy as well like Karaoke or trivia night.

Wife and I went to carytown to meet up with some of her classmates. We got there early to eat. They all ended up being way late so we and drank and drank and drank. We split the sailor. I say split but it was probably more 80% me 20% for her. It was really good oh lord. The pastrami was fantastic and the sausage on top was juicy. They have the good fries which we really enjoyed. When the rest of our party got there, my wife got a sandwich for herself. She got the Cuban, which wasn't bad but not anything special. The service was great we were at the bar, then got a table when the gang got there, we had 8 soldiers and 1 civ (me) and the server was on it. Best thing I ate in Carytown!

This used to be the hangout spot when I was in college. Now I rarely ever go, but a friend suggested it for lunch today because we figured it would be quick enough to be done in time for a meeting later. Parking is usually terrible in Carytown, but I managed to find a spot on Cary Street a few feet away from NY Deli. My friend arrived shortly before me and ordered herself a Diet Coke, and a water for me. I ordered a club sandwich on white bread with fries when I arrived. My friend then ordered pastrami, scrambled eggs, and Swiss on an English muffin and fries. When the food arrived, since I never ordered a "real" drink from our waiter (it slipped my mind, and the waiter never asked), I asked the server (different person from our waiter) for a glass of pineapple juice which was delivered promptly. The fries were fantastic - battered and crispy. One side of my club's bread slice was burnt but hidden facedown. I don't mind visually dark bread if it tastes alright, but the flavor was burnt and bitter. It ruined my craving for the club, so I sent back the sandwich and opted for an order of pretzels instead. The beer cheese looked a bit weird and watery but was pretty good. I will caution that it's a strong, sharp cheese. The pretzels were soft, piping hot, and glistening with butter. Pretty tasty. When the waiter returned with the check, my friend had left for the restroom. I confirmed to the waiter that we wanted separate checks. He looked at my empty glass and asked, "What was this? Just an orange juice?" I responded that it was pineapple juice. He then asked, "And just the pretzels and the water?" I told him yes and then paid. Unfortunately, they have one of those mobile pay terminals where they read you your total and you immediately pay right there. I usually ask them to print out my tab before paying, but it was such a small order I decided to simply pay. The waiter then got to my friend to close out but tried to add the pineapple juice to her tab. He then turned to me with a snarky tone and said, "I JUST asked you if it was just the pretzels and the water and you said yes." I maintained my composure and reminded him that he asked me about the juice when preparing my tab and I didn't realize that (or understand why) he omitted it. My friend graciously put it on her tab and I reimbursed her. We all make mistakes and have misunderstandings, but the nasty tone was uncalled for. I'm glad a more patient version of me responded to this situation instead of college-age me because WHEW, tf?! Given the only saving grace today was the fries, I see no reason to return to NY Deli unless I'm hanging out with someone else who wants to go.

After a day viewing exhibits at VMFA, we came here for a quick lunch. Finding parking on Cary was easier than expected and we dropped in about noon, with plenty of seating. They filled up fast though and were full by 1245. I had the sailor sandwich with fries and Nancy the Reuben with potato salad. Great potato salad! I liked the sailor knock worst and grilled corn beef and Swiss. Nancy thought her Ruben had too much fat. Service was top notch with water refills and asking what else we needed. Only disappointment were the fries. I got about 12-15 for the $1 extra and they weren't hot. Setting is typical upscale bar with a separate table area. Yes I'd recommend to a friend and do plan on coming back.

This place may not look like much when you step in, but honestly we were pleasantly surprised! Very dive bar-ey in appearance, but looks can be deceiving! Their claim to fame is being the first restaurant in Richmond - which already made it feel special, and honestly the place has some solid character. Felt obligated to order what they are known for: "The Sailor Sandwich" (pictured) which, despite its ingredients, tasted quite luxurious. Think high end hot dog meets a pastrami melt - and it just WORKED. My partner loved the fish and chips too - quite a generous helping. Fries were the icing on the cake - perfectly crispy and dangerously addicting. Service was quick - our waitress was super attentive and food took maybe 10-15 minutes to come out. Reasonably priced too!

Food was ok, I had the buffalo chicken wings and crab croquettes. Maybe I should have gotten a sandwich ! The buffalo wings were nothing to write home about,, not crispy not really flavorful. croquettes were good but not great. Maybe needing a little more flavor. Service was good, fun bartenders. Would go again and try options that they are more known for. Hope to review again!

Ive finally got the chance to try New York Deli. I went on a Saturday afternoon, wasn't too busy. We immediately went to the the rooftop Tiki bar, great addition might I add. It's so cute and aesthetic. I have a food page if you want to see more (javellgoodeats). The rooftop gives you full access to the Food menu as well as drink menu. Their drink menu is extremely small and a bit lack luster. They only had beer and cider on there. If you wanted a margarita or anything else then you'd basically have to tell them. Instead of picking drinks from a set menu. I was expecting more on themed drinks to match the whole "rock away beach" theme. We got drinks in these basic plastic cups. Idk if it's cause we were on the rooftop why more effort wasn't put into the drinks. After that, I just opted for ciders and beer. Those were pretty affordable anyway. Now, the vibes of the rooftop was immaculate, it gets pretty busy after 8. They could have a better music selection. First it was good when we just got there and then it drastically went down. The food was pretty good, I got the classic club and that comes with fries. The portion was huge and I appreciated that. I can't remember what my partner got. I also know sometimes they have a DJ. Sometimes they have karaoke. Different events there so if you are looking for something to do and it's patio season, I definitely recommend NYD.

The first three times my Steve and I went here everything was great. I tried the hamburger, the Rachel sandwich and the Swiss a tastey sandwich served with either turkey, knockwurst, corned beef or pastrami. Sides are great too. Veggies, Cesar salad, onion rings fries etc. My Steve tried the Rachel, the burger, and the Swiss too. Wonderful service, Jimmy, and Jules couldn't have been nicer. Prices are not that expensive and the atmosphere while not as charming as other eateries does have tables by the window. Yesterday July 5, 2025 made my husband and I decide never to frequent this restaurant again. We ordered Steve got a basket of fries, I opted for a portabella Reuben with a side of onion rings. My Steve had to run an unexpected totally necessary errand. When he returned, I politely asked Hudson our waiter if we could have our food reheated. I said I know it's not your fault but my husband had to run an errand. Our food got cold. I politely asked our waiter Hudson If our food could be reheated. I said I know it's not your fault, my husband had to run an errand and our food got cold. Could you please reheat it. Hudson is a pleasant kind young man and a good waiter. He said he would ask his kitchen manager. He came back and told us our food couldn't be reheated as it's illegal in Richmond for for restaurant staff to reheat food. My husband and I were basically told that they don't have a microwave because it's not healthy. But he did say the staff had one but it broke down four months ago. I did research and discovered that there is no law against Richmond Virginia restaurants indeed in the entire country stating restaurants can't have microwaves on their premises. The Richmond Board Of Health has strict safety regulations regarding how they are to be used. There is a law in Richmond Virginia called Chapter 421 stating that restaurant employees can reheat food but The Richmond Board Of Health along with Chapter 421 have specific regulations outlining specific times and temperatures for reheating. But there is no law prohibiting restaurants from reheating food. Restaurants in Richmond are not prohibited from reheating food. From Steve The bartender I spoke to also indicated that microwave use isn't healthy. The cook from the kitchen told me roughly the same thing and he told me it isn't safe to reheat food. But according to Richmond law itself it is safe if following specific safety protocols. Kitchens that don't have microwaves could use an fryer. The chef could have made my wife another portabella no regulation regarding that. We are against wasting food because there are hungry and homeless people but if you will not reheat remake. The rudeness and the lie about Richmond law was upsetting. Maybe the staff isn't aware of the law but they had no call to speak to us so rudely. It's not just what you say it's tone how you say something. They need only to look up the section on microwaves to get the truth about microwaves. Maybe restaurant staff servers etc., could ask the customer who order food anything that could require reheating, if they can handle larger portions of food otherwise if they leave it some uneaten at their table the staff has to throw it out unless they're willing to take it home if they don't reheat. Customers should be told when they order if a restaurant doesn't reheat food. This would be a good way to reduce food waste. Or smaller portions could be available.

This place isn't just great for a good time out on the town or a night with friends out drinking but this place is also great for lunch and or dinner. I came here with my boyfriend on a Sunday for lunch and receive the chicken wrap. it was so good. I also had a side of the broccoli cheddar soup. Also super delicious because it was cheesy. Another time I came here for dinner and drinks and ordered the salmon entrée meal. That was also very light delicious and refreshing. I was impressed with the quality of the fish.

The tenders are to DIE for. Literally the best tenders i've ever had, came out crisp and flavorful. Don't get me started on those loaded fries those things were bomb and so worth the drive downtown!

Went here for a late lunch back in August and it was fantastic. The food was tasty and portions decent and the price point was fine. I'm a sucker for some decent fries and these knocked it out of the park. Crispy outside and tender inside. The chicken wrap was bursting with seasoned chicken and the perfect amount of crisp lettuce and yummy ceasar dressing. The island bowl hit the spot for our pescatarian in the group and the cheddar jalapeno waffle with chicken and an egg was tasty and filling. The best gem about this restaurant is the unique roof top bar with large seating area that is perfect to eat outside and get some fresh air. In the evenings I can easily envision just chilling there with friends as a great way to unwind after work. Employees were attentive and friendly, prices were reasonable, portions were perfect. We had a great visit and can't wait to go back.

This is the best Buffalo chicken wrap you will find in all of Richmond. I am a Buffalo chicken wrap connoisseur and have been on the hunt to find one singular good Buffalo chicken wrap since I moved her. Well, New York Deli has it folks! Their wrap was delicious, and pretty big. I get it with no tomato's and ranch on the side for dipping, and it's to die for. The wrap is a little bit loose, I wish it were a tad tighter so none of my chicken fell out as I was eating. My fries were a little soggy which was disappointing bc I think they would've been really crunchy and delicious if they weren't, but I think it's just from the to-go container! Besides with a wrap this good, to have fries this great with them as well is rare. From a taste standpoint, this is a delicious wrap and by far the best of Richmond and possible all of Virginia!

Had "lost" our food when we showed up, remade it but made it wrong. Very nice service, but food was not worth the hassle and being made incorrectly.

Love going to the rooftop on a night out. Andrew does a fantastic job every time making sure it doesn't get too crowded and overall improves the experience. I am sure it isn't easy having to tell people no, but he manages it well. Great guy, 5 stars for Andrew!!!

We visited NY Deli rooftop bar for a drag bunch and it was too much fun! NY Deli is RVA's oldest restaurant with the rooftop bar being a new addition and it is super nice! We had mimosa's which consisted of a pitcher of OJ and a bottle of champagne so you can mix them to your satisfaction. My daughter and I split the breakfast burrito and instantly regretted not getting one each because it was to die for! The sausage gravy on top was packed with flavor and I don't even eat it normally. The servers are lovely and the energy here is amazing! It's a great spot to visit if you're looking for delicious food, friendly people and good times!

Got the buffalo chicken wrap and seasonal brussel sprouts. Both were delicious, just a little pricey. Great vibes and I liked the new roof top.

Love the new roof top but you never know if it's open or not, we have stopped by for dinner 3 times this year and was told the roof top isn't open due to staff shortages

Went here with the family and didn't realize how long NY Deli has been here, my grandpa used to go 40+ years ago. I came in with low expectations, but boy was I wrong! The pretzel sticks and the beer cheese app were the best I have ever had. I would also rate their sailor sandwhich as the #2 in town (very close call), right behind Chioccas, and just in front of Boychiks. The beer selection was strong and the service was great. The relaxed atomosphere and clean space made for a great experience. We will definitely be coming back!

I love this place. It's like a New York deli but in Richmond. A cute thing named Braxton served us and everything was so good. I recommend the chicken caesar wrap!

Came here today for brunch and it was a pretty solid experience. Walked in at 11am on a Sunday and they weren't too busy. Our server, Tiffany, was very sweet and attentive. I got the avocado toast which was tasty - the grape tomatoes and mango pineapple salsa compliment it nicely. I was disappointed with the jalopeno cheddar grits, they were just OK. I wish they had more cheese and more of a jalopeno flavor.

The food was good to average. Sailor sandwich and Lox and bagel. Both were overpriced. The lox were not good. Service was great! There were swarms of flies all over our table. We were eating inside. It is hard to enjoy your food while swatting at flies. The back door is left open for people to go upstairs -- maybe the reason for the flies. Used to love the NY Deli many years ago -- before the ownership changed. We will not be going back anytime soon.

It's a popular place so be prepared for a wait, but it's well worth it. I have been several times; and have had several different sandwiches and haven't been disappointed yet. Today I had the Sailor and it was . I highly recommend this place

3:40pm Saturday 5/29 My first time at New York Deli. I came in to try The Ruben but after seeing the menu I decided on the crabcake sandwich and french fries. It had to have been the best crabcake sandwich I've ever eaten. The bread , the Crabcake with no filter, the remoulade, all was was very tasty. I left feeling satisfied and not overly full. I will definitely order this again. The beer battered French Fries We're probably the best French Fries I've had. ‍ i'm not a big french fry person but these were really good. My waitress was great, helpful and attentive. I'll definitely be returning. ---------------------------------- New York Deli Sunday 5/30 @8:11pm Woke up hungry from a three hour nap so I decided to hit the New York Deli again. Yesterday when I was here I couldn't decide on the Ruben or Crab Cake sandwich. So I came back today, tastebuds ready for my Ruben and some more of those delicious beer batter French Fries. Didn't wait long at the hostess desk today. The bar wasn't as packed probably because it's Sunday. I got my same great waitress from yesterday, yay! Unfortunately I was devastated to hear they didn't have any fries, onion rings or kettle chips. Yes! Devastated! I settled on potato salad. Received my soda with no straw but not by my waitress, someone else brought it. I had to wait for a straw. I'm not a fan of drinking out community glasses. The Ruben was definitely good but as you can see you have to eat it with a knife and fork. I think it could've used a little more sauerkraut. Definitely not a deal breaker. The potato salad was also very good . The taste of it isn't your typical southern potato salad but more of a bougie potato salad but still very tasteful. I still prefer the french fries. Another really good visit. I'll be back.

Food was great! But the linens/napkins they give with silverware are made of cotton and got all over my hand when I was eating, was super grossed out. But the service was fantastic and I had the Polynesian sandwich which was awesome. Maybe just ask for paper napkins when you sit down.

Pretty decent deli! Our food was good and we got a good portion. Prices were reasonable. Inside was nice, there was good seating options. Only complaint was that we were brought the wrong item from one at our table.

Don't trust that 25 dollar charge they say goes away. They charge you for it and on top of your tab and then still charge you your tab. I am paying twice and then the 25 dollars that was said to not be charged to me.​

A friend and I came here on a Sunday around brunch time. This is the 4th time I have come to experience the rooftop, however there is always a conflict. On this day the rooftop doesn't open until one pm. I think we arrived a little after noon. We sat at the bar, which was fine, bc I was more hungry then anything. I think the bartender's name was Chris ( I may be mistaken) whomever he was, he was VERY friendly and helpful with menu items, and his mood all around was very enjoyable. I wasn't sure what I wanted to order, so he told me what NOT to get and was is never good on the menu, lol. I ordered the classic egg Benedict with ham with hash brown patties. I added Lox to my benedict and extra capers. The benedict was delicious, especially with adding the lox and the extra tang from the capers. The hash browns were just round tater tots in my opinion, and they were over cooked. Very crispy/crunchy, which made me sop up some of the hollandaise sauce with the tots to soften it a bit. This place gives me irish bar vibes, I don't know why. I think because of the large bar and all the wood makes it feel like a legit pub. All around I will go back, as I have never had a bad experience here, and the food is always a little bit better than good. I hope to go and make it up to the roof top one day. Great drinks and a cool drinking atmosphere.

There's literally so many restaurants in Carytown and we decided to try New York Deli. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience by any means. It's just that the food didn't really blow me away. I got the Falafel with fries, and honestly the fries were really good. The Falafel just didn't land for me, it's like it was missing something. If it just had something more, I don't know what, I think it could've been good. That being said, the rest of the menu did look pretty good, so it's definitely worth another shot. The staff was very friendly also. It'll probably be a while before I do, but I'd definitely try out some of the other menu items there. They also have little events like karaoke, and that would be fun to go to.

Food was good and the staff were polite and attentive. They have a great selection of appetizers. You must try the pretzels and cheese dip. I could eat that all day!

Italian sub was delicious the first time I tried this place and the onion rings were the perfect crisp. I visited this restaurant a second time as I was craving the sandwich. This time the restaurant was a little dirtier. They had crumbs and trash all over the floor. And my sandwich was a little overcooked and the onion more crispier than before. This experience couldn't beat the first time I ate here. However the staff was super friendly on both trips. The other thing I don't like is cloth napkins. And they are the good quality kind. More like a t-shirt material. Aside from that the food here is pretty dang tasty.

At the nearby barber today and stopped in here for lunch, A very nice laid back old school vibe here...at least during lunch. Kayla was behind the bar and she was able to give me a quick run down on the specials and the favorites. I opted to go with the Boulevard which was the special, nice fresh and tasty roast beef on a kaiser roll with a side of apple cole slaw. It was very tasty and a good meal for $6 bucks. Has to believe this place has been open since 1926. It has stood the test of time and it seems they do a good job at all times with all their meals. They have won the Style Magazine award for Best Bartenders with Reese and Kayla and best Trivia for Tuesday night. Easy to find, right beside the Byrd theater. They also have a back patio.

I was very impressed with this place. My buffalo chicken wrap was among the best I've ever had. The patio has a nice atmosphere.

Just walking around the city after finals and went to get a little lunch after having a gym buddy recommended it, I'd say it was a great recommendation! Loved the fish and chips wish I could've tried the cream soda.
