The Best Sandwich Spots In Atlanta - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"New York Sandwich Shop sits at the end of a small West End strip mall and touts their submarine sandwiches as being “famous world wide.” That's definitely a stretch, but we can confirm they’re good and the best in the neighborhood. There are about 20 sandwiches on the menu offered sandwich style (on sliced white bread, throwing it back to our cafeteria school days) or submarine (how we usually order ours). The New Yorker with ham and turkey is our fave—get it “all the way” with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions, and oil and vinegar. Just make sure you have paper money on you, ‘cause cards won’t jive with their cash register that looks like it's been going strong since the ’80s." - juli horsford, nina reeder

New York Sandwich Shop - Review - Westside - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"New York Sandwich Shop sits at the end of a small West End strip mall and touts their submarine sandwiches as being “famous world wide.” Points for hyperbole since you’ve probably driven past this small shop without noticing it, but we can attest that they’re good and the best on the block. Get the New Yorker with ham and turkey, ordered submarine style “all the way” (mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions, and oil and vinegar). We dig the old school looks of this grab-and-go spot. The staff behind the counter handwrites your order on a notepad, then makes your sandwich and meets you at the cash register that looks like it would be featured in an episode of Stranger Things. Oh, and it’s also cash-only, which only emphasizes the feeling of time travel." - Juli Horsford

Didn't get any food although I really wanted to. They only accepted cash. Didn't trust the area enough to go to the nearby atm. Not because of danger but because I don't trust random atms. I left and went to zaxbys. A very small mom and pop. Not suited for dine in. Get your food and go. Lady at the counter was e Sweet. But it's cash only. Very limiting and quite Inconvenient.

First off, don't listen to the haters. They're probably never satisfied with anything in their own lives, so nothing will make them happy. I'm so glad this place still exists. I haven't been there since I lived on that side of town before covid, and I'm glad they survived it. Don't expect frills of any kind... it's as old school as you can get. It's the food and the price that keeps them in business after all these years. And I'm talking ten year old prices... currently a little over $5 for their most expensive sandwich, and less than $7 for their most expensive sub. Hot dogs start at $1.69. Cash only! Do yourself a favor and get a potato salad with your meal... it's the best kind of deli potato salad, chunky and super thick and creamy. Their deli meats are top notch. Their pastrami is golden, and corned beef is equally good. You can even get them by the pound. Toppings are basic sub stuff, so don't expect garlic aioli or candied jalepenos...just lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, oil, vinigar, and your choice of yellow or white American cheese. That's it. The two little old Asian grandmas are sweet, in a stoic Asian grandma kind of way. You give them respect, they give you respect. She must have told me "thank you" a half dozen times just now, so for the people saying they're mean or ignorant, maybe YOU are. And yes, they heat up hot sandwiches in the microwave, but only the meat and cheese. They don't have a grill, so what do you expect? They DO use a steamer for the buns and hot dogs, so you could probably ask them to steam your meats instead, but I didn't bother. So, if you don't mind an old school kind of deli that just serves good sandwiches at a cheap price, and are comfortable going into the hood (it's pretty rachet around there), then give them a try.

Google
Hidden Gem, hole in the wall. Maybe 7-10 folks top. Can’t beat the prices, & they are tasty subs. Quick quick service, cash only though. Perfect quick bite for lunch. Location/atmosphere=3stars if you’re from Atl or lived here long enough, keep it on a swivel. However major changes in the last decade. Curious to see if they will last through the “changes.”

Google
Two very nice ladies waited on me. Ordered a Reuben and a Polish sausage and a bottle of water. The Reuben wasn't fancy but it wasn't 7-8 bucks either. It was good though. It started getting busy as I was leaving but I'd return to try some more items.

OhThatsOreo G

Google
I ordered a chilli slaw dog. The hot dog was definitely a beef hot dog, so it was good. The cole slaw was okay, but the chilli tasted fake. It tasted like it was straight out of a can.

Kristin A.

Google
First thing I noticed soon as I walked in was CASH ONLY so don’t forget your cash like me. Luckily BOA is down the street. To my surprise the prices are super cheap and the bread may be the softest I’ve had at a sandwich shop. I got the polish sausage sub pretty good and filling to be less than $6! Looking forward to trying other sandwiches whenever I come back.

Google
First time visiting today. I live in the area and have driven past this location many times. This is one of those IYKYK spots. There was a short line inside(good sign). I asked the person in front of me her opinion of food, and she highly approved. The prices are surprisingly low. I got a corned beef sandwich it was decent. Didn't quite hit Lou's Deli deliciousness back in Detroit. I'll try a different sandwich on the next visit.

Chat P.

Google
Small sandwich shop. Great prices. It is cash only though. New Yorker sandwich was just ok. Nothing special. Chili dog wasn’t great.
google avatar

Tehillah-Yaa'el Y.

Yelp
They are courteous and friendly, make the best tuna sandwiches. Reasonable prices also.
google avatar

Solomon C.

Yelp
I thought about gate keeping this place but nah! Great old school sandwich shop run by little old Korean ladies. Cash only! I got a pastrami sub for $6.29 and it was fantastic! Technically It's half a sub but whatever! I'll be back! I wonder how long this place has been here?
google avatar

Shantai S.

Yelp
Tasted just like home. A nice and simple good ol NY deli sandwich. I will definitely return.
google avatar

Hangry V.

Yelp
Solid sandwiches and prices are reasonable. The ladies working there and super nice and the service is super fast. The inside is like a time capsule, we love it.
google avatar

Ling K.

Yelp
Employees grumpy but that's normal Atlanta behavior! Food bussin tho so it ain't really no issue for me best subs in the A!
google avatar

Shoshana R.

Yelp
It was very disappointing and people were rude on top of it being mediocre. Why are you called New York Sandwich Shop, when there is nothing NY about you..???
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
I had been craving a sandwich all weekend so I put my trust in yelp which led me here! I made the drive out for a corned beef sandwich and am glad I did. It's not far off the 20 in west end. You can tell has been around forever and it's currently run by two Asian mamas. The parking *terrain* is atrocious. Lots of holes, dips, and rips in the ground so drive slowly and carefully! It was my first time, but behind me came a handful of people which I could tell were all regulars cause they knew how to order. Pick your: 1. Meat 2. Bread: white or wheat 3. Cheese: white or yellow 4. Toppings: All the way, or customize Optional: somewhere in there, she asked if i wanted it hot/toasted I got a hot corned beef on wheat with white cheese, lettuce-mayo-mustard for under $6. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to raise their prices, but hopefully they keep enough steady business as it seems like they have! I'll definitely be coming back here anytime i want a quick hot sando!!
google avatar

Marquis C.

Yelp
After seeing the reviews, I had to check it out. This place did not disappoint. The simple old school menu layout made ordering a sub or sandwich so easy. I ordered a corned beef sandwich and a ham sub and the hoagie was exactly what I was looking for. The affordable prices make this a great alternative to main stream sub and sandwich shops. The service was great! Two friendly asian women that were smiling and making my order was great to see. The old school deli shop makes this a genuine hidden gem in west end , Atlanta. !!!!!!This is a cash only establishment! So hit a bank or family dollars in the shopping center before you arrive.

JC H.

Yelp
Certainly an up north/NY feel and fulfills the culinary nostalgia northerners crave! Great food and service is solid.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Everything could be better. Place was dirty, meat was substandard. The pastrami was nothing more that prepackaged deli meat.
google avatar

Tommie G.

Yelp
There's not a Publix nearby but it doesn't matter anymore cause this place has the better sandwiches. New York Sandwich Shop is an experience. If you're in need of a good sandwich? NYSS has got you covered. This spot is simple. Honestly one of the most simple spots I've ever run across before. I was searching around and saw a menu on here from 2014. They are CASH ONLY so keep that in mind too. That menu has not changed. Prices are about a dollar more bringing everything to about $3-4 and for what you get you can't beat it. And the food is good! The Ruben and Broadway are my favorites - and the potato salad is New York style so don't come in expecting the southern sweet. All in all, for a quick - and I do mean quick, most times my food is ready within 7 minutes and that's with me ordering multiple things with a line already inside and cheap meal? You can't go wrong. Now when you're passing by, bring me a Ruben - thanks!
google avatar

Cynthia G.

Yelp
I've tried dinning here twice. Both times the sign said open but they were closed. I've been looking for an authentic hoagie and was super excited to try them out. I'm not sure how they run a business like that.
google avatar

Tiffany G.

Yelp
HIDDEN HOOD GEM: I tried this place yesterday for the first time and I'm back again today. Super affordable subs and sandwiches. Everything taste very fresh and honestly I prefer these over a Publix sub. I order the thinly sliced Turkey on wheat, " all the way" ( mayo, tomato, lettuce, vinegar) a bag of chips and a sweet tea/ lemon aid mix, $9.50!!! You can't beat that This place is cash only, also the business hours listed are not accurate. They typically close at 4pm

Miesha O.

Yelp
Local shop in the hood, but they are good and fast... only takes cash though. I love the sandwiches but people be sleeping on them chili dogs lol...they are the bomb! And I wish they stayed open later than they do. Hey close at 3 pm. I like the little Chinese ladies though.

Shawn J.

Yelp
Great sandwiches simple and plain Remember to bring cash and a lil patience ....
google avatar

Airiel J.

Yelp
I will be here once or twice a week from here on out! This Turkey submarine was everything I needed it to be. They only take cash so come prepared for that.
google avatar

Dontrell H.

Yelp
Reasonable Prices, Friendly People, Fast Service and Tasty Food Sounds like a W to me Yes I will return. No Doubt
google avatar

Wendy W.

Yelp
Delicious my husband ordered the pastrami sandwich!! Delicious and as you can see from the picture a good amount of meat.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
I was highly disgusted. The sandwiches here was horrible!! Old turkey meat , it smells really bad in the inside and it's dirty. Please if you don't want to get sick please go to another place
google avatar

Ck L.

Yelp
Whoa! This is best sandwich in town. I can't believe I waited years to visit here especially since it's only a 10 minute drive from home. The sandwich comes with mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar. I decided to go "all-the-way". I couldn't believe how well balanced all the flavors were. I was able to taste and distinguish each ingredients and the bread and meat in every bite! I have searched for good corned beef for long in Atlanta. And I finally found one that is both lean and fresh! Mission accomplished. The potato salad. THE POTATO SALAD!!! It is like a blend between potato salad and egg salad. If you love both, you will be in heaven! I may need to go back tomorrow! Or dinner tonight.
google avatar

Toby K.

Yelp
Coming from New York this place is gem for cheap good eats. Corned beef sub is the greatest. And it's under $6. Cash only to keep prices low.

Opulent ..

Yelp
Pick and choose when to open. It's inconsiderate when people drive 30+ minutes to get there
google avatar

Ayanna R.

Yelp
If you love sandwiches then you'll love this place. They make best sandwiches ever! Highly recommended! They've been in business for a very long time & the quality & service is still great! Must try.
google avatar

Jamal W.

Yelp
Just do yourself a huge favor and go get a sandwich expeditiously lol! I am a sandwich connoisseur & when I say this place is the 1 & the 2.. BELIEVE ME! You will not be disappointed.. so far they have nailed it every time and I will most definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Lexi S.

Yelp
I came here and ordered a turkey samdwhich I came here bc of the reviews. I took a bite of my sandwich and instantly spit it out the turkey was old and disgusting. Y'all should be ashamed to say your a New York deli no you are not. This is just sad

Derek B.

Yelp
Got the corned beef and steak and cheese they tasted fresh and so good. Def gonna become one of my regular spots for lunch

Akenti R.

Yelp
Terrible service. I ordered a Reuben and I was informed that they did not have any rye bread which I accepted because I drove there just to try it because of all of the good reviews. Only to get my food and my sandwich was not hot at all, not grilled at all, no thousand island dressing at all and no Swiss cheese, all of which makes a Reuben a Reuben. There was literally nothing but yellow mustard, turkey meat and sauerkraut on the bread that I could've made at home. I asked the Asian lady where's the thousand island? And I was rudely told that THEIR customers don't like thousand island dressing (as if I wasn't also a customer). So I said that's not a Reuben, that's just a turkey sandwich and and the Asian lady rudely responded by tossing my sandwich onto a nearby dirty cart. I let them know that I never said I don't want the sandwich but simply that it isn't a Reuben sandwich so why was my sandwich thrown on a cart?! And the two Asian women kept repeating "no thousand island, no thousand island". I no longer wanted the sandwich after they just threw my food to the side and I was so shocked and appalled at the level of terrible customer service I had received so I just walked away. Oh and this was after coming back from a trip to go get cash because like many others, we walked in surprised to learn that this place is cash only. We will NEVER be back. Those two Asian women have no regard for customer service. The best in the city Reuben's Deli was closed today and that's the only reason why I tried this place. Don't end up regretting trying this place like me!!

Lynn R.

Yelp
Very good little sandwich shop. They have an assortment of subs and sandwiches. They are not stingy with the amount of deli meat they out on your sandwich. Very reasonable prices. Mostly to go. Nice and quick.
google avatar

Tif R.

Yelp
Best sandwiches ever at a great price. Tops Publix deli and Subway! They're cash only and sometimes close a little earlier than the hours say so call first.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
It may not look like much from the outside, but inside is a lot of good. They make each sandwich fresh with great meats, fresh bread, and your typical toppings. It is a very simple place with solid food.

Madison P.

Yelp
I got the corned beef sandwich with all the toppings and it was amazing! The perfect food for a day on the river. The ladies working were so nice and gave the customers great service. I was in and out in under 10 minutes. I visit ATL quite often and am so happy I found this place because the prices are unbeatable and sandwiches are fresh.
google avatar

Gerald N.

Yelp
I been passing by this spot for a minute on my way to pay my Georgia power bill. I couldn't take it any longer and I had to stop by and give it a try. I got the pastrami sub on wheat wit mustard onions lettuce tomato and American cheese. The pastrami is thin sliced and pretty good. They have cheap ass sandwiches with a good quality that feels like you are getting value for your money. I think this spot cool. Great prices. Good lemonade.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Pretty good subs, smaller type style little corner sub shop. Very ummm, local lol. Inexpensive. Cash only. All subs one size, kinda medium sized. Oh and the food associate/servers aren't New Yorkers lol
google avatar

Ethan P.

Yelp
What a gem. If you want a unique Atlanta experience head to this place. Cash only. Cheaper than cheap. Very solid food. These kind of places are disappearing fast as yuppies swallow the entire city.
google avatar

S L.

Yelp
Simply the best sandwich in the world!!! Also they are open on Saturday. Hot Steak and Cheese is my favorite!! AAAAAAAA++++++++

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. I got at least once a week. They're cash only which is a slight downside but it's worth it!
google avatar

Cathy B.

Yelp
Was in the area on business and needed a fast lunch with some co-workers. Yelp told me there was a sandwich shop nearby -- what could be faster than sandwiches? When we found the place, I believe I received some raised eyebrows from my coworkers -- parking in a kind of run-down parking lot, entering a shop with burglar bars everywhere, and a very quiet, very low-key interior restaurant. But, swear to God, the sandwiches were terrific, cheap, and much appreciated. We gave 3 sandwich orders to the woman behind the counter, each sandwich customized. She didn't write anything down, and all of our orders were 100% correct. Plus, we got out of there for less than $5 per person. I would have willingly paid more than that for the same sandwich in another city (probably in another part of town, 'cuz the rent would drive the prices). Would totally go again.
google avatar

Adrienne T.

Yelp
Best sandwich shop in town. Meats are always fresh, sandwiches are "old school" (liverwurst-my mother used to eat that, whatever it is; bologna, etc); along with modern day classics. Turkey and cheese sub on white will make you knock someone out-woo! Potato salad is absolutely out of this world. The younger lady is more friendly than the older lady, but both are very kind. You get the energy and vibe you give. CASH ONLY, and they close really EARLY.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Venue: New York Sandwich Shop Decor: Hole in the Wall Service: Decent, Neutral (not great, not bad..just aighhtttttt) Environment: Take out, almost deli style Food: Sammiches, Sammiches and more sammiches Prices: Cheap, low Huge Pros: The prices Debbie Downers: Conclusion: I was not impressed. I understand what the place was trying to execute. Very good sandwiches at low cost prices. Well they got the low cost correct but as far as the sandwich as being very good - not so much. I am a Reuben Sammich fan. It was probably one of the worse Reuben sammiches I ever had. I can make a better reuben than that. Damn, I'm taking this review personal! When you throw the sammich in the microwave to melt the Swiss - that's a no no in the Reuben world. They have club sandwiches, Cubans, club sandwiches and more in which I think are all maybe good but from what I had, it wasn't all that. Overall: D
google avatar

Markeisha P.

Yelp
Every time I'm in the area stopping here is a must! The New Yorker all the way and a Chilli Dog is my jam!!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I only lived in NY for about 18 years, so I'm no expert authority on NY Sandwich shops, but this place does not remind me anything of the many sandwich shops I've been to from NYC to Long Island to central NY and the Capital District to the southern tier to Upstate and western NY. Yes, I've been to sandwich shops in all of those areas. "New York" Sandwich Shop in Atlanta's West End was ok, but if you are from or are familiar with NY, don't go to this place expecting the same options. First clue for me should have been when I asked what my cheese options were and she said, "white or yellow." (American cheese? ugh!!!) The staff was nice and my sandwich was fixed quickly and with the bag of chips it was a convenient relatively inexpensive lunch.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
It's simple, check it. These Chinese chickens chuckin budget subs out the West End wreck it. It's basic, let's face it, This ain't no bougie Buckhead designer 'have it your way' sh!t. It's legit, the subs hit. Cash only Son, so grab a sub, drop a Lincoln and split.
google avatar

Richaun F.

Yelp
The chicken salad sub is horrible I threw it way it was so nasty and full of eggs the store is not that clean
google avatar

Mick S.

Yelp
Batter Up! One of the top sandwich places in the area. Bread is always fresh and soft, quality meats, and priced fairly. I like the Broadway with a pack of chips....a perfect lunch for a big ol' grunt like me!
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
The Good 1. The polish was delicious and the service was fast. 2. The women who work there are really sweet. It's a family business that has been around for about 30 years, so they seem to know how to run a business successfully. They have excellent customer service and are loyal to new and regular customers. 3. They also have homemade bundt cake, which was amazing. 4. It's a very low key and casual place. It's a hole in the wall located near the west end mall.
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
Seriously the freshest and tastiest subs ever. They are known for their Corn Beef Sub. Try it with extra meat for only $1 buck to make it extra meaty! I drive all the way from midtown to go to this neighborhood gem! The Slaw dogs are bomb too!

Wave N.

Yelp
Turkey sub was horrible. They used cheap meat. Took one bite, threw it in the trash.

Fatima D.

Yelp
Been going here since I was a toddler. Very nice people. Food is wonderful and is very inexpensive. They can do no wrong in my eyes.
google avatar

Chavonne S.

Yelp
Cash Only! Great sandwich shop. Reminds me of getting a sandwich at a bodega in New York.
