1946 Cua Bac

"The signature dish of this conspicuous restaurant, located in a brightly coloured yellow and green house, is the fried crab and rice porridge hotpot. Served in small bowls at the table, the crab, pigeon, beef balls and vegetables combine in a naturally sweet medley of flavours. The staff have only a smattering of English, but English menus are available with an enticing range of authentic Vietnamese dishes. Book in advance to make sure of a seat." - Michelin Inspector

"Hanoian Flavours, Hanoian Charm For an authentic taste of Hanoi , the best places to go are usually humble street stalls or even bia hois. This little venue in Ba Dinh District, however, is a real hit with locals who want to go upscale in their surroundings without compromising on the provenance of the food. Sample local and regional dishes such as crab hot pot and grilled dragon fish in a scuffed but convivial setting."

We were staying just around the corner and jumped at the chance to drop in. Despite not having a booking, the team kindly found us a spot – no small feat given it was a bustling Tuesday lunch with both upstairs and downstairs packed. The service was great, with the manager recommending several dishes that really delivered. We had the fried vegetables with egg and garlic, steamed-then-fried chicken with fish sauce and salt, and the deconstructed rice rolls – all full of flavour and served quickly. The place is fun and full of colour – in the food, the people, and the energy. A great spot for an authentic, lively Hanoi dining experience.

I really enjoyed my meal here of which I was actually looking for a cafe but this alleyway caught my eye and the design and beautiful yellow of the building plus colorful pinwheels were spellbinding. The Michelin star sign was a plus so I walked in and was initially seated in a corner seat at the back of the room but I asked to change to the window seat as it felt too stifling cold further in. The 2nd floor dining area seemed busy / full with groups. I enjoyed having the first floor entirely to myself while I dined. Thought the music was too loud at first but they obliged when I asked them to turn it down a bit The dishes are meat heavy but they do have a few vegetarian dishes like sweet potato and tofu and steamed vegetables. I ordered tea which was lightly sweet, iced, and paired very well with the dishes I ordered. Overall the dishes I ordered were tasty, and loved being tucked away in a calm yet visually stimulating setting. I tend to be a slower eater preferring to take my time so ambience is very important to me to feel like I want to linger. Beautiful dishware. Love the quality. At one point a woman with mangosteens on a cart walked by and waved at me through the window. Such great timing. I LOVE mangosteen and went out to purchase a handful which I enjoyed there in the restaurant as a bit of dessert. Excellent dining experience and setting / location that would not have otherwise stood out it to me had I just seen it on Google maps. Was def serendipitous how I wandered here and the elements that drew me in when I happened to be in the area.

We discovered this place by chance as it was adjacent to our BnB, and it turned out to be a really good find. The portions are quite big so we could only order 2 dishes, and they were both quite amazing. The Fried Pork Ribs with Salt & Chilli was one of our top dishes in the entire trip. The pricing is slightly on the higher side compared to other restaurants that we had been to but it was worth the money. I was only a little shocked when they charged us for the wet towel as well, which is usually given free everywhere.

Dined at Nhà hàng 1946 Cửa Bắc, and it truly lives up to its Michelin recognition (2023–2024). The prawn hot pot was rich, flavourful, and perfect for sharing, while the fried tofu with green onions was simple yet incredibly tasty. Authentic Vietnamese cuisine at its best – satisfying, well-priced, and ideal for groups. A must-visit for anyone seeking a true local dining experience. #NhaHang1946 #HanoiEats #VietnameseCuisine #MichelinGuide #PrawnHotPot #TofuDelight #FoodieVietnam #GroupDining #AuthenticFlavours

Grilled eel in bamboo tube 9/10 Morning glory 9/10 Fried frog legs 3/10 (my friend rates it 8.5/10) Herbal tea with pineapple leaves 8.5/10 Grilled eel was so tender and delicious. The herbal tea was very fragrant and tasted like taro milk tea even though there’s no milk in it. Very smooth. Frog legs tasted like straight up oil and desperately needed salt or some type of seasoning. The crispy skin was very flavourful though, and my friend liked the frog legs a lot and ate all of it. He gives the food 5/5 stars as well. Great service from the staff!

Good local restaurant, my Vietnamese friend helped to order and all dishes are delicious, vegetables here is very fresh and i like this vegetables salad the most. I tried this soup the first time but it's nice, a little bit sour but make you feel refreshing.

A Timeless Taste of Authentic Vietnam Stepping into 1946 Cửa Bắc feels like walking into a warm memory—where every dish tells a story and every flavour sings of home. This charming Hanoi gem delivers authentic Vietnamese cuisine with a proud nod to the past. The atmosphere is delightfully nostalgic, echoing post-war Vietnam with rustic décor and the inviting aroma of simmering broths and sizzling woks. Standouts include the snail meatball a michelin dish , served just as it should be—“thịt rang cháy cạnh” pork perfectly cooked, . The canh cua mung tơi is soul-soothing, brimming with delicate crab and earthy jute leaves. Every bite reminds you why traditional cooking still reigns supreme. This is not just a meal; it’s a tribute to the enduring spirit of Vietnamese culinary heritage. 1946 Cửa Bắc isn’t just worth visiting—it’s worth remembering.

Food was below average. We ordered the stir fried morning glory, stir fried beef with pickled vegetables and the grilled eel. The morning glory was normal, the beef was too chewy and the eel was bland. Atmosphere is nice and staff are nice but will not visit again for the food.
