Nica on 4th - Review - Downtown Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"West 4th Street is the new jazz hot spot—this cocktail lounge is located right next to Parker Jazz Club. Its theme is “Prohibition," which means dangling Edison bulbs and lots of Old Fashioneds and martinis. They’ll have live jazz performances every day they’re open (Tuesday-Sunday) from 6pm-1am." - Nicolai McCrary

A Jazz-Age Cocktail Bar Is Opening Downtown This Month | Eater Austin

"Opening September 18 in downtown Austin, this Prohibition-inspired lounge and cocktail bar from jazz-scene vets Kris Kimura and Aaron Frescas aims to conjure the spirit of the Jazz Age with throwback décor, live music in the vein of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, and a stronger focus on cocktails than Parker Jazz Club and the Elephant Room. Located right next to Parker, it’s a 100-seat venue with moody Edison bulb lighting, black leather seating, and wood tables, with subtle nods to its namesake, Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, from cat-themed wallpaper to a moth emblem woven into the logo. The cocktail list features the Toronto (a rye-based old fashioned with amaro), the Coronation No. 2 (a cognac cocktail with crème de menthe, citrus, and peach bitters), the Hanky Panky (a sweet martini known for its punch of Fernet-Branca), and the “Martini” Martin (a strong drink made with aged cognac, wine, and an absinthe rinse), plus wine, beer, and nonalcoholic options. According to the founders, the goal is a space where live jazz, good cocktails, and great service carry equal weight, with hours Tuesday through Saturday after opening." - H. Drew Blackburn

Live jazz music from real jazz musicians (curated by and from Parker Jazz Club / Elephant Room) in a relaxed, but elegant, environment. This isn’t a jazz show like it is at Parker, it’s a jazz lounge. Classic cocktails and wine to accompany a lovely evening. If you want to see the full jazz band, you’ll need to wait until they’re done playing whatever show is happening next door at Parker Jazz Club.

1st time at Nica and the atmosphere and musicians were great. Cool vibe to the room and the seating was pretty comfortable. Listened to 2 bands and both were fun and played great jazz music. The upscale relaxing vibe was good and the intimate size of the place was great. In my opinion, Downside, the drinks were weak! I rarely drink so anything with alcohol I can feel pretty quickly and when I drank my old fashion, I felt nothing, the flavor was really good but they clearly used more simple syrup to dilute and made it weaker.. They have a business attire dress code mention on their reservation site,, which we were excited about. Getting dressed up and being around the same is great but sadly they don't enforce it. Some people were wearing t-shirts, longhorn hoodies and riped jeans, don't have a dress code on your reservation site if you're not going to hold people to it. One of the waitresses was extremely pushy and kept insisting we get shots because it's "Saturday night", we aren't at a crappy bar on dirty 6th, we're in a Jazz Club. Will we be back, probably but ......

Went during the opening weekend when it was still 100% walk-in (reservations now open). Had a great experience with good cocktails and live music! Staff was very friendly and service was quick. There is a cover charge that is added on to your bill, but they let you know that upon entrance.

I made a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday, and we loved it so much we came back the next night with friends! Everyone was so wonderful, the performers were incredible. The seating was comfortable, drinks were well made and thoughtful, and the acoustics of the space made it easy to enjoy the music or conversation at your table. We will be back!

Google
Cool new spot with really good live music, but felt misled. There was no mention anywhere of a cover fee and I only found out when the bartender closed my tab. Beware!! The bartender and doorman blamed each other for the miscommunication. When I made the reservation a week earlier (with a cc on file) there was no mention of a cover either, just a $10 fee if we didn’t show up. The vibe was great.. and the bartender and doorman very friendly but a shame. Just be upfront with guests and get whatever facts straight.

Excellent venue, perfect for the kind of group outing I’m planning with friends! I came on opening night, and while the place was packed (always a great sign), the staff was kind, gracious, and attentive. Once a space opened up, I was seated in a cozy booth corner with a perfect view of both the band and the bar. I sipped on a delicious old fashioned while soaking in the atmosphere: high ceilings, open design, and thoughtful details throughout. What impressed me most, though, was the balance: lively energy with music and style, yet still comfortable for great conversation. Exactly what I was hoping for in a date-night, after-dinner spot. I’ll definitely be back soon, and I can’t wait to introduce some fellow speakeasy lovers to this gem. Thank you for making my night special and exceeding my expectations. — Gisel

Google
This is such a fun new spot, such a great place to get dressed up for a date night. The drinks were great and pretty strong, and not too expensive for the experience that goes along with them. The services was amazing, and the music was great all night long. Will definitely be returning frequently

Drinks and beer selection were very good, ambience was great but the music was spectacular. The music went from good, to great, to absolutely incredible as musicians changed around several times throughout the night. We had a wonderful time at Nica and can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
TLDR; $10 *per person* charge for your table before ordering drinks, great music, excellent acoustics, good waitstaff. This is a great in between option for jazz lovers who want less structure than Parker Jazz club and more formality than Elephant Room. We spotted an instagram ad for this new jazz bar and so were excited to check it out. It's downstairs on 4th street. The vibe is so good here. They really nailed it. It's filled with small tables and yet you never feel cramped. The acoustics are amazing, because somehow you simultaneously hear every note from the musicians clearly *and* you can carry on a conversation with your table *and* you don't really hear other tables' chatter much. And the musicians. They're great and very talented. They played a wide variety of different artists, taking a second to explain what they're playing next, and mixing in some great improvisation. Now on the downside, this place is pricey. Walking in they tell you there's a $10 "table charge" but you really need to think about it as a $10 cover charge per person that comes with your drink bill. This math is important, because that means you pay tax on the cover, and when your waitress gives you the card reader to tip, (and it's automatically set to 18-20-22% as the defaults), you're also tipping them for the table charges (which are *per person* not per table). So we sat for about 90 minutes and enjoyed some excellent jazz. We had one drink each, and I don't drink alcohol (I had soda), and the total cost with tax and tip was over $50. (All alcoholic drinks are $15-$19 each) So we will be back, but it will be a special treat at that price.

Yelp
My partner and I did a staycation downtown and decided to stop by Nica for some live jazz. There's a $10 cover charge per person. As soon as we arrived, the piano player went on break and so we listened to the jazz playlist that was on the speakers for the majority of the time. I asked our server if they could do mocktails and she confirmed then asked what types of flavors I like. I told her that I wanted something citrusy and that I like grapefruit and lime. She asked if I liked simple syrup, to which I responded no. The drink that she brought me was awful and tasted like the bartender just put in club soda with a squeeze of lime, and there was a lime and grapefruit garnish. When I told the server I wasn't a fan of the drink, she said "Well when you order a drink with citrus and no simple syrup, it's not going to be very good", which is a crazy response. I've had plenty of mocktails where simple syrup isn't used, but still tasted great. My partner's drink wasn't very good either. The table of girls next to us were also having issues with the same server since she couldn't explain why there were so many extra charges on their bill. A girl had ordered a simple martini but there were 3 separate charges for that one drink. They asked for a manager since the server couldn't explain the charges, and it sounded like the manager was having a hard time explaining them as well, and he ended up comping the drink. By the time, the pianist came back, we were pretty put off by what we experienced and decided to leave.

Yelp
Great drinks and a cute atmosphere, though the service was just okay. I'd come back to catch the live music!
