Niche Niche Review - Soho - New York - The Infatuation

"Admit it. When that one friend invites you over for a dinner party, a small wave of dread rolls over you. You text back “Can’t wait” as your mind flashes back to the last time, when the chicken was pink, the smoke alarm kept going off, and you drank wine that reminded you of Manischewitz, even if you’ve never actually tried Manischewitz. Every night at Niche Niche in Soho is a dinner party. But unlike at your friend’s apartment, the wine is always excellent, and the unexpected moments are what make you want to come back again and again. Niche Niche is the newest spot from the same team behind Tokyo Record Bar, Air’s Champagne Parlor, and a jazz bar downstairs called Special Club. These are all places where you don’t just go to eat or drink. You go for the experience. At Niche Niche, that experience begins the moment you step into the dining room, which is more like a living room, and you’re handed a Zalto wine glass before you can even sit down. Every weeknight, Niche Niche brings in a new specialist – typically a sommelier, winemaker, or importer – to curate the wine selection for the evening, which dictates what the kitchen cooks. The staff pours the four wines the wine boss has chosen, and the kitchen cooks a four-course set menu loosely based around them. Every time you visit, Niche Niche is a completely different restaurant, and you have absolutely no way of knowing what kind of restaurant that is until you arrive. We’ve been at Niche Niche for a Greek night, when assyrtiko was poured and oregano chicken was served. We’ve been on one night featuring all white wines, and another night featuring all-women winemakers, both of which were accompanied by very nice pieces of fish. Once it was a night of American wines, with a San Francisco-inspired cioppino to go with. There is always some sort of appetizer, a dessert, and a first snack course that includes focaccia straight out of the oven, which might be the best thing here. The food is sometimes great, occasionally just a little disappointing, and is generally simple stuff that feels like what would happen if your friend who likes to host dinner parties was actually good at cooking. But when you’re at Niche Niche, you’re not really thinking about the food. You’re too busy trying a wine you’ve never had before, chatting with the sommelier about what you’re drinking, singing along to David Bowie or The Flaming Lips or Missy Eliott turned up just a little too loud, eavesdropping on or joining the conversation at the table next to you, looking around for the closest staff member to silently convey - in the least greedy or needy way possible - that you’d like a little more of the third wine before you switch to the fourth, discovering that orange wine pairs extremely well with blueberry panna cotta. Oh, and having the realization that you are, in fact, a little tipsy for a Tuesday night at 7:15pm. That’s why you come to Niche Niche. It’s spontaneous, it’s exciting, it’s fun - and even if the last activity you did that could qualify as any of those adjectives was trying a new show on Netflix, Niche Niche will make you feel like you are all of those things too. The cost for wine and dinner is $80, and considering how regularly your glass is topped off, and how quickly this restaurant will make you forget about whatever terrible day you had at work, that seems like a very fair pricetag. It’s important to know that you can really only get the full Niche Niche experience Monday through Friday, two seatings per night. Late-night and on weekends, it turns into an a la carte restaurant, which is a lovely setting for wine and snacks, but doesn’t have nearly the same dinner party magic. That said - no matter what night you’re here, there’s no way to guarantee success at Niche Niche. You could show up on a night focused on a type of wine you don’t love, or kitchen might not be cooking something you’re particularly excited to eat. But those are risks we’re willing to take when the Niche Niche upside is a special combination of good luck, good wine, and a really, really good time. Food Rundown Wine-Focused Nightly Menu We can’t tell you what you’re going to eat at Niche Niche, because the menu changes every night, based around whatever the wine curator is pouring. You can expect a snack, an appetizer, an entree, and dessert. And you can expect that it will all pair very, very well with your wine." - Katherine Lewin

Had a great experience working with Niche. They were very responsive from the beginning and made the whole process easy. I needed some rental furniture to fill in while waiting for some of the longer lead time items, and they handled that quickly with pieces that fit in well and arrived super promptly. The custom pieces they designed turned out especially well. They worked with several furniture makers and woodworkers to get the details right and optimize for turnaround time, and the quality and finish really came through. Install days were simple and well coordinated. I barely had to do anything which made things stress free. Overall really happy with how everything turned out and would absolutely recommend them!!

I had a large home to design and remodel, a daunting assignment for someone who’d never tackled a project like this. I hired Niche Interiors, and Jennifer and her team went far beyond my expectations, not only in designing every inch of my new home, but in managing the entire project. Niche took measurements of everything and started visualizing the project right away, they got a thorough sense of both my design aesthetic and budget, and in a matter of weeks, provided options for paint, layouts, cabinets, and fixtures. And soon after that, they presented me with an array of possibilities for every room, from gorgeous chairs and tables manufactured by small companies to great one-of-a-kind custom pieces from local builders. They included budget items, too, so I could best decide how to allocate my budget. Niche also suggested some lovely hand-sewn rugs and unique upholstery fabrics, which further elevated every room. Considering all the great work Jennifer and her small team did, and how smoothly they did it, it felt like I'd hired a much larger company. The Niche team is either amazingly efficient or they've somehow adapted to surviving on two hours sleep a night. The bottom line, of course, is my home. Each room feels comfortable and organic but also perfectly in sync with an elegant Mid-century-modern aesthetic. All the lovely furniture, lighting, tiles, window treatments, the gorgeous upholstery, the custom shelving, even a custom iron book-rack for my library, make every room a delight. Niche not only saved me an incredible amount of time, they designed a home more attractive and stylish than I could have imagined. Jennifer and her team are both extremely talented and diligent, and I'm forever grateful to them.

Niche was an incredible partner in the complete redesign and remodel of our home. Jennifer and team were a pleasure to work with. They have amazing design expertise: elegant, simple, modern. And they take the headache out of an otherwise stressful process of home design and remodel. They communicate updates in an easy-to-digest format. I'd highly recommend them to anyone for both their design skills and customer service/project management.

Yelp
We hired Niche Interiors to help us furnish a new house. It's our first house that we've owned, so we were pretty much starting from scratch. Jennifer helped us with our son's bedroom, eat-in kitchen, family room, living room, and den as well as paint selection and window coverings for the entire house. She was also great about providing quick input (yay or nay) on other rooms that we had chosen to do ourselves to save budget. We absolutely love the results! One of her references had told us that their house 'feels like us, only better' and that's exactly how we feel. It doesn't feel like a decorator's house - it feels like our house, but done in a much nicer way than we could have pulled together on our own. Jen pushed us to take a few risks that we would have been nervous to do on our own - and they really elevate the look. Over a year later, we still love it. The thing we appreciated most about Jennifer is that she was very conscious of our budget and does an amazing job of mixing & matching mass produced items with more expensive custom pieces to achieve a custom look for a lot less. She also made the process very easy for us by giving us a very curated set of options that we could choose from for each major item - allowing us to make the decision ourselves, but very efficiently. She also found a way to incorporate some key pieces we already owned - but wasn't shy about telling us which things had to go. I guess the ultimate recommendation is that we later added a master suite to our house and asked her to help us again!

Yelp
We are so grateful to have found Jennifer Jones and Niche Interiors. Jennifer has been such a pleasure to work with. We have a small house with a challenging floor plan and we did not get the "gene" for home decorating. We are senior citizens who were living with a lot of clutter and rooms that didn't work well for us. Jennifer has designed beautiful rooms in keeping with our taste, values and budget. She is so professional, works efficiently, shows up on time. She gave us an image book to learn about our tastes, gave us nice options (for each item we needed) in three price ranges, and came in under budget. Jennifer also designed a beautiful built-in cabinet/ window seating area and found a skilled craftsman to build it. The built-in fits well with the original architectural details of the house, and looks as if it is original. Jennifer was very sensitive to my husband's needs as a disabled person; she was always considerate of feelings. I was afraid to work with a designer for fear of being looked down upon, but Jennifer is totally down to earth and never made us feel "taste challenged".

Yelp
I found Jennifer's ad on craigslist and decided to contact her from there. I had just purchased a condo in San Carlos and being a single male, I hadn't the slightest clue how to decorate or pick things that would match well. Jennifer and I met up and she asked questions about my tastes and budget. We then mapped out the costs and time line for the project. Throughout the next few weeks she emailed me options for all the different rooms including center pieces, curtains, art pieces, accents etc.. She was spot on on what I was looking for. She made this process very easy and everything she picked out looks great! I highly recommend her!!!

Yelp
I had a whole house to design: remodeling and furnishing over 3,000 square feet from floor to ceiling, a daunting assignment for someone who has never done more than order chain-store sofas over the Internet. Yelp
We hired Niche Interiors this past summer (June 2011) to design three rooms for us from scratch, in addition to paint selections for the rest of our flat, and floor plans for the bedrooms. I initially hesitated giving 5 stars, because everyone can improve. It seems every review on Yelp is either 5 star or 1 star. However, I can't fault the experience we had with Niche Interiors. Jennifer delivered exactly what we wanted, even though we had little idea of what we wanted at the beginning. Multiple conversations and viewing different design styles ensured we were all moving in the right direction each step of the way. We went in thinking we knew our design taste and realized our tastes are much broader than we originally thought. The design we agreed upon fit our taste and the style of the space perfectly. Jennifer knew we were budget conscious (who isn't these days), but that didn't throw her. She picked out at least three options at different prices for every piece. It allowed us to put our money towards the items that were important to us and save money on things that weren't, while still creating a cohesive design. The couple of times we had a miscommunication or a problem it was quickly addressed, taken seriously, and solved to our satisfaction. We have already recommended her services to multiple friends and look forward to working with her again! We have two bedrooms and a bathroom remodel with her name on it!

Yelp
I hired Jennifer late last year/early this year and was a bit disappointed. I really loved her style however, unfortunately, I had several issues with the process: 1) During our initial interview, I told her specifically what I liked about her style/portfolio. In the design meeting, she recommended the exact same pieces as displayed in photos in her portfolio of the Pacific Heights Edwardian - the same West Elm safari rug, INMOD Sputnik lamp, couch and Wisteria console. I was very disappointed that she did not go out of her way to individualize my condo. 2) In the paperwork that was signed/filled out at the initial interview, it outlined that the items recommended could be bought thru her at with her designer discount. This was not the case. 3) The final design did not include a tv stand. I had to email her to ask for recommendations. She replied, "the space is a really odd size and it might be difficult to find something that will fit. I would look into Room & Board's custom Hudson cabinets which are much more flexible." I thought that the point of hiring a designer was for them to help me find pieces that would fit my space both in terms of size and design. 4) In the initial interview, I made it clear (both verbally and in writing) that I wanted some direction on picking out some art/ pieces for the mantle/ pillows, etc - this was one of the primary reasons I hired her. During the interview, even though I mentioned it verbally and wrote it in the paperwork, I was not told this was not included in the budget package. When I inquired after our meeting, I was told to "pick what I like." 5) The couch that she recommended to me did not fit in my condo. She did not take appropriate measurements. Consequently, upon delivery, the delivery men were unable to get the Room and Board Hutton sofa into my condo. 6) Lastly, several of the pieces were already discontinued/no longer in production when I went to order them 3 weeks later.

Yelp
I tend to agree with Whitney S. There are dozen of interior designers who can do a better job with regard to style and budget. Niche in particular has the same style throughout after our initial consultation with them. They tend to design base on what they like instead of incorporate their ideas into the homeowner. There was no room for us to compromise. They also are not willing to work with the homeowner's budget as opposed to literally told us to look for some other designer flat out. This is poor business practice. I would not recommend niche to any of my current neighbors and friends in the city.

Yelp
Amazing. Incredible. Outstanding. Fantastic. Awesome. Marvelous. These are the adjectives to describe how pleased I am with the results that were delivered. I was lucky enough to stumble across Niche Interiors while searching the web in a last ditch effort to find the right fit. It was a long drawn out process, interviewing various firms and individuals but fortunately enough, the light at the end of the tunnel was found and it was burning bright. After browsing their website, reading the blog and viewing photos of past projects, I was impressed and about 50% sold that I had found the right designer. The last 50% was achieved during the first meeting. What I ultimately was looking for and found in Jennifer can be described in a few simple words; professional, reliable and talented. Throughout the entire process, from concept to procurement, it went flawlessly. All deliverables were met, timeline adhered to, budget maintained and most importantly, the understanding of what I was attempting to achieve in terms of the units style, was made an absolute priority. Coming from the construction industry, one of my companies internal goals is to make the experience, the journey of a project, one that our clients enjoy. Niche Interiors too, lives up this goal and transcends it as I cannot stress enough how happy I am and continue to be every night I come home and step foot into my place. If your looking for an interior design firm, look no further than Niche Interiors. You will not regret it!

Yelp
If I could give 10 stars to Niche Interiors I would. They are hands down the BEST San Francisco interior design team! This morning while writing this review, I am sitting in my new condo, drinking a cup of coffee (in my new comfy custom upholstery chair) and looking around at my newly designed space. It is just amazing. And the people responsible for this amazingly peaceful, contemporary and thoughtful design is the team at Niche Interiors. I found Jennifer on the internet and made the initial call. She promptly called me back and explained the process involved in working with her team. Yes, a process! I didn't know interior design teams followed a process and her process is efficient to say the least. We were on a tight schedule moving into our new space and needed the design to happen fast. Additionally, my partner and I were trying to combine our two different styles. We were worried the creativity and design would be lost while trying to make our deadlines. We were completely wrong! Jennifer helped us from to start to finish--individually asking us questions about our styles and interests, selecting paint colors, choosing furniture and creating a floor plan. We LOVED the options she presented! Jennifer has impeccable taste and it shines through on her projects. I would HIGHLY recommend Niche Interiors if you want someone who has a wonderful design eye, is professional, efficient, cost-effective and awesome to work with. And to top it off--she stays in budget!!! Awesome!

Yelp
My husband and I recently moved to San Francisco from Cleveland. We had to downsize from a house to a condo in the city. I needed help. We moved into a new condo and we had a blank slate. We still had a mixture of furniture - some old, some new, some borrowed, some cheap! I am at that age where I wanted HELP and do it RIGHT. I met Jen and we exchanged information. I decided to interview her (and 2 others). I was SO impressed with Jen. She is extremely professional, organized, showed up to our first 'consultation' on time and with her business information. She has a great website so I was able to look at some of her work on-line. Jen was not offended at all when I asked for references. Plus, she was extremely reasonable (compared to the other designers I interviewed). Jen is very easy to get along with and is open to many different ideas. She gave us a homework assignment - she needed to know what we both liked and wanted to get to know our own styles. We gave her a budget and a priority list. We hit our design full speed. After 5 months, my husband and I are so happy with our home. We aren't done yet and we will be calling Jen again soon to finish up the rest of the rooms. She has a great list of contractors she works with; she has a great sense of paint color; she is willing to listen to us and liked a few of our items we decided to go with . She doesn't get offended if we ask her to 'keep looking'. I can't say enough. Jen has started a blog and now a monthly newsletter that contain wonderful decorating ideas along with names of furniture places to check out. She is worth every cent!!

Yelp
Jennifer and her talented team take home design to a new level. Their hands-on, creative and collaborative approach set us and our mutual client at ease. We worked in tandem with their team on a complicated renovation and move project on Telegraph Hill, and I can't speak more highly to the level of skill and professionalism with which they delivered. Our client was beyond thrilled with their work, and for us as a sub-contractor, they made the project turnkey. Niche combines effective design project management with a modern, livable and sustainable product.

Yelp
Jen at Niche Interiors has help us on numerous occasions with design decisions. She is a total pleasure to work with and a great listener. She seeks to understand fully and offers on-point solutions that's both practical and beautiful! Having someone with so much experience and knowledge really saved us time and money!

Yelp
Ok, so I've never done the Yelp review thing before. But Jennifer is worth raving about and I owe to her the coziness of my home, so the least I can do is sign up and gush a bit. Long story short, I became a proud homeowner last July and wanted to leave behind my Ikea roots along with my disintegrating Mission apartment. But I'm fundamentally clueless when it comes to all things aesthetic and hadn't the faintest idea where to start. I "borrowed" Jennifer from a friend of mine who knows a lot more about these things than I do and had rave reviews of Jennifer's work . . . and, sure enough, working with Jennifer was absolutely the BEST decision I could have made. She 100% professional and will take as heavy or as light a hand in the design process as is wanted/needed (a pretty heavy hand for me since swatches make me crazy). She even designed a couple pieces of furniture herself (not to mention my fireplace) and found, interviewed, and hired some expert contractors to take care of the custom building. Hiring a designer isn't cheap, but I'll end up keeping for years everything we picked out together, so I'm guessing I've saved (probably quite a bit) in the end. And I've been getting showered with compliments from my friends Who Know About These Things, which is always a good sign. Another very, very important thing: Jennifer is phenomenally insightful about personal preferences and what it takes to make each individual comfortable in his or her own space. Very nerve wracking, the idea of having someone else take the lead in picking out your stuff, and I was terrified of a home that would feel disturbingly like someone else's house. Nope--she knows me better than I do. Oh, and she knows every cool vintage furniture store in the City. And isn't afraid to use Ebay. I could go on . . . . .

Yelp
Jennifer is an amazing designer. She understood our aesthetic very quickly and was able to blend the slightly different tastes that my husband and I have. She helped us with paint colors as well as furniture selection and now we absolutely love our place! Highly recommend her. She's fast, creative, and professional.

Yelp
I had been looking for someone to help with our master bedroom and living room for a while, and happened across the Niche site. I am so glad that I found Jennifer - months later, these rooms are completely transformed and are places where I love spending time. Jennifer was great to work with, and has a great process for gleaning the styles & colors that you love. Her approach was very flexible and pragmatic, giving us a range of choices for each piece, fabric and paint. I highly recommend her and would work again with her in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Jen and I have collaborated on several Eco Friendly Custom Cabinet projects. (I am a custom furniture and cabinet maker here in SF).She has a style and sophistication that is truly unique. Her attention to detail and follow up makes it very easy to work with her. I enjoy her lightheartedness and do recommend her to anyone wanting Eco Friendly Design.

Whitney S.

Yelp
I think Jennifer is a fine choice for anyone who is looking for a designer that makes all the decisions for you. However, if you are someone who has your own ideas and sense of style, Jennifer is definitely not the way to go. She takes it very personal if you do not like her suggestions and is quick to shoot your ideas down. After working with her and reviewing her website, it is clear that Jennifer prefers and specializes in one particular style and has little ability to expand beyond that. So, if you do not really care how your place ends up looking you should hire her. If your home and design is important to you and yours, I would recommend a designer who is willing to meet your needs and appreciates your input.

Julie S.

Yelp
After disappointing experiences with two other interior design firms, I learned that Niche was available to help me decorate our house. I was more than ready to start the process of making my house livable, and Jen and Lynn jumped on my project immediately. They were extremely responsive, respectful, and well-organized. They really listened to what I wanted and this made for a very smooth and efficient process. They gave me excellent options for each of the pieces I needed and gave good guidance when I was having trouble making up my mind. They were also very mindful of our budget, giving us good advice on where to splurge and where to save. Also, I was quite specific about our needs as a growing family, and Jen and her team had a great sense for how to make the house kid-friendly but still beautiful and interesting. I also really appreciated that they weren't afraid to give me candid suggestions. For example, I initially would have stuck to all neutrals, but they helped give me new perspective on adding a bit of color here and there, and I now see how right they were about it! I couldn't be happier with the end result. I feel like our house truly reflects our personal style without sacrificing any functionality. They are extremely professional and are a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Niche for any project, large or small!

Carrie S.

Yelp
I highly recommend Jennifer at Niche Interiors. My husband and I have different tastes and finding furniture and accessories we can both agree on can be a challenge. Jennifer was very insightful at determining where our tastes intersected and provided us with options we could both love. She was great at working with us on a tight budget and helped us get the most bang for our buck. In the long run working with a designer can save you time, money and regret so investing in hiring Jennifer was money well spent. I only wish we had found her sooner!

Yelp
Jennifer and her team were a dream to work with. We were finished with our home in May of 2014. My husband had past experiences with other interior designers, but this was my first time and I feel so lucky that it was with Niche Interiors. They were professional, warm and fun to work with. They made it easy and exciting! It was such a fun experience for the both of us. There are a number of things that stand out in my mind but I will share two of what I consider the most important: 1. My husband and I have different styles and just picking out a piece of art or an object to display can take some time until we agree. They were able to blend our two esthetics beautifully and painlessly. Of course there was plenty of conversations that my husband and I had, but the decisions were made pretty easily. 2. They are so organized in their entire approach. There are detailed budgets, pictures, binders, etc. I never felt like I didn't know what was going on at anytime. I would highly recommend (and have!) Niche Interiors- they have great style and so much fun to work with!

Sonia Q.

Yelp
Jennifer is extremely professional and took the time to listen, understand, and respond to our ideas and desires. My husband and I have different decorating styles so she worked with us to find common ground. Her turn around time was also expedient; we had requested a color palette, plans regarding how to best lay out the different rooms, as well as furniture and window treatment suggestions. All of her suggestions were helpful and not only motivated us to move forward but provided viable, affordable options to make our condo look and feel great!

Kristine W.

Yelp
WE LOVE JENNIFER! We found Niche Interiors on Craigslist and when we met Jennifer, she was so put together that my first thought was "I want her to be my personal shopper." Happily, she's also very down to earth. This is our first time working with a designer and she never makes us feel incompetent or intimidated. She's listened to us from day one on what we like/don't like, our (low) budget, etc. She comes up with 3-4 choices in various price ranges for each item, and she always includes one that's exactly what we'd have chosen ourselves and one that makes us think. She's opened our eyes to the world of color and texture, and we now sit in our living room every night because we love it so much--it's very us but way better. She's also good with scale and figuring out how big/tall/small something should be in relation to the room. She doesn't mind when we ask her for more choices or find something that's different from what she recommended, and encourages us to get out and look at things to see what we like. We're almost finished with the living room and dining room and now she's working on the master bedroom. It'll take a while but we'd like her to help us with our whole house. I recommended her to two of my friends who have different taste than we do and she did a great job for them as well. Seriously can't say enough positive things about our experience with her!
