Where To Eat Down The Shore: Atlantic Highlands To Seaside Heights - New York - The Infatuation

"So you decided to try to outsmart the shore traffic and take the ferry from Manhattan to the beach. Well played. What you didn't bank on was roasting in the sun for 40 minutes to find yourself reaching the shores of Jersey in a translucent sweat-drenched shirt. The good news is that you’re a few minutes from an ice cream therapy session at Nicholas Creamery. Nicholas is a name that for years was synonymous with seasonal fine dining in New Jersey, but now they’ve taken that same local ingredient sourcing approach to ice cream. Expect flavors like chocolate caramel pretzel, honey lavender, and brown sugar cookie dough, and enjoy them all in made-to-order waffle cones or as the centerpiece in their fantastic milkshakes. Me and my family love this place. I get that fatboy excitement when I see a Nicholas Creamery text come in, telling about what new flavor is in. Italian rainbow cookie, cannoli, and pineapple cake being my favorites in that order. However, as of late my pints have been light. Last time it was my cannoli pint, nowhere near full. Ok, 1 time no big deal. Their scoops are almost always healthy. Then today again. My favorite, Italian rainbow cookie is back. So, I got 2 pints. They got them from the back. I didnt check just rushed home so it wouldn't melt and so me and my family could enjoy. Again, nowhere near full. 😑 I feel cheated. Check the pics. That said, I'll still be back

From the reviews, I thought this was going to be a mind-blowing ice cream experience. Don't get me wrong, it was good, just not great. I've had ice cream in almost every state and this wouldn't be in my top 10. We had creme brulee, which would've been excellent minus the brulee topping, cookies and cream, which was okay and lastly not your cherries Garcia, which was the best of the 3. Also, the large, which I took the pic of, is everyone else's medium, although the $5.95 price is fair. Store decor is great and service is decent, albeit not fast.

Google
Love the location area and the staff was very nice! The flavors were unbelievably good and very reasonably priced! 11/10!

Google
Love the small batch, unique flavor combinations. The taste and quality make it worth a trip. OMG the carrot cake ice cream is incredible.

Google
Um, yum. Stopped by this place part on recommendation, part just looking for ice cream and it was sure worth it. Delicious, unique flavors, pleasant service, indoor seating and nice decor. Really great ice cream, highly recommend.

Google
Cash only here yet nothing but friendly staff! Ordered the peanut butter whiskey ice cream and let me just say it was delectable with great hints of whiskey! Will definitely return here!

Google
Absolutely delicious. The Millennial Chum and I stopped by this past Saturday afternoon on her recommendation after a nearby lunch. This is my kind of ice cream place - verging on hipster, with unique flavors that require an extra few minutes of hemming and hawing because there are tons of legit options. This was a rare instance where I was completely okay with there being a few customers in line ahead of us to give me more time to make a decision. There were a few strong contenders but I ultimately ordered one of their small batch options, Taliercio's Italian Cookie. I'd...make that a flavor year-round. I'm a big fan of Italian cookies in general (my favorite is probably the anisettes), and one of the main reasons is their emphasis on almond extract. I didn't notice or confirm any anisette cookies in there, but I'm pretty sure I spied and/or tasted a few rainbows and butter cookies. It's a great flavor, and the cookies tasted fresh. In my experience from getting, say, a cookie dough-type flavor, the only potential problem that can arise is if the cookies are stale or the consistency is off from the ice cream. Not here. Perfect and tasty. The Millennial Chum went with one of their "normal" flavors, coincidentally their version of the cookie dough with brown sugar, and was enormously pleased. One big caveat here - they ARE cash only and have an ATM on the premises. In fact, the initial reason we stopped here was because we planned to go to an estate sale and the Millennial Chum needed to use said ATM to ensure we had some viable legal tender for that event. We didn't end up even going to do that, but I'd say plan B was a lot better and more scrumptious.

Google
Went there on opening day. The ice cream was delicious , very creamy. It has a farmhouse look, very nice decor. The staff was friendly and quick. They offer vegan ice cream options. You can see all of the description on their website. The smell of waffles was in the air, as they baked fresh waffles cones !!! 🍦🍨

Yelp
So delicious! Specialty custom created flavors that change often. . Just so good! Lovely family owned business. Support local!
google avatar

Yelp
Heavenly, fresh made ice cream at heavenly prices. They also offer a few vegan flavors and they occassionally offer new and exciting flavors but my personal favorite is the Hudson Coffee Crunch. Grab a seating inside or outside on their bench as you enjoy the flavors. You can sign up for emails and they will send a discounted coupon.

Yelp
Yummy homemade ice cream. They have really unique and interesting flavors. I went with the Jersey sweet corn and it was delicious. They let you try multiple samples.
google avatar

Molly F.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever! They always have such a great selection of flavors and they give you taste tests too. They now have multiple locations down the Jersey shore which is awesome!
google avatar

Yelp
Terrific creamy texture, nice dairy flavor-it should, it's ice CREAM! (Not all does). Wide selection of choices, the line moves fast, and i love to visit Atlantic Highlands anyway,

Yelp
Was in the Atlantic highlands area and decided to stop for some ice cream.... so happy we did. The ice cream was to die for. Nicholas's creamy had so many options and you could definitely tell that the quality of the ice cream was top notch. The service was excellent and the location couldn't have been better. They even had some seating available, cute little ice cream shop. Thanks for making this night one to remember.

Yelp
Very good ice cream, creamy and delicious. Not too sweat and a lot of unique flavors. My friend got corn, and I got a goat cheese ice cream. The waffle cone looked super home made and was still warm. The one thing is there was a long hair baked into it so I didn't eat a whole part of the cone, other wise everything was great :) They are also cash only. Which is a little odd because they seem pretty legit and have other locations...

Yelp
Nicholas Creamery was another delightful find in Atlantic Highlands, a city which must be some sort of secret foodie's paradise that I'd never visited before. I tried the classic hot fudge sundae and it was fantastic. On the recommendation of the staff I had the NJ Blueberry and Brown Sugar flavors, both of which were distinct, flavorful, and creamy. I may not be back in Atlantic Highlands anytime soon, but if I do visit I know where I'm going for dessert.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream money can buy - the creme brûlée was awesome service was friendly!
google avatar

Yelp
I have had coffee ice cream in countless places, but the Hudson Coffee Crunch at this small batch ice cream parlor puts them all to shame. If you happen to be in Atlantic Highlands make sure to stop by this amazing creamery.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
This place just draws and looks like it makes good ice cream. I don't know if its the branding but it works. The ice cream is on point with it being nice and creamy without being too sweet. I also like that it was clean especially the topping area. They do a nice job here and you can taste that it is homemade. I forgot which ice cream I got but they were all good. We came after eating at Strada across the street. Try this out.

Yelp
My sister's, friend and I stumbled upon this cute shop while driving around Atlantic Highlands. So glad we did because their ice cream is delicious! We tried Strawberry shortcake, Jersey Berry, Hudson Cafe coffee crunch and Ooey Goey peanut butter shake.. so yummy! Will definitely come back to try the other flavors. FYI, this shop is CASH ONLY!
google avatar

Kanea M.

Yelp
I have tried their Goat cheese ice cream * seasonal, the great pumpkin * seasonal, the horchata, * seasonal the brown sugar cookie dough, the sweet cream and corn * seasonal Chocolate bourbon peacan Hudson cafe coffee crunch Cookies n cream Good ole fashioned chocolate So I like this place because the ice cream is made in small batches, but it's not a ton of sugar and an artificial after taste that I have experienced in my days of trying ice cream. The service is great, they generously serve the scoops! They have a super cute storefront, located in Atlantic Highlands. We have sat inside and outside on a bench with our dog. This place is cash only and offers and ATM.

Yelp
Tried the buttermilk lemon blueberry flavor last weekend, and I'm back here again this Saturday (I live 30 mins away and I like being lazy on weekends). It is that good. Also tried the Strawberries and Cream today and was equally amazed. Come eat here. No samples, cash only.

Yelp
Nicholas Creamery came highly recommended from locals and my Yelp friends. The ice cream is high quality, no 2 ways about it. My wife and kids selections were absolutely delicious. I was very unhappy with my choice, the Hudson cafe coffee crunch had great flavor but it had coffee grinds in it which was very unpleasant. I did not realize it until I started eating it. I have had coffee ice cream of all types from a 1000 different places and I have never experienced coffee grinds in the ice cream. I cannot see how that would be enjoyable. Buyers remorse. The flavors that my family chose were great. The peanut butter was my favorite. I will go back and try something different.
google avatar

Latrice S.

Yelp
Where do you go after a long hot day on the beach... Nicholas Creamery of course! Not only are they a small local business, they have an awesome combination of flavored ice creams! For the first time ever, I tried a sweet corn flavored ice cream and it was one of the best flavors I have ever tasted! It literally tasted like sweet corn. I didn't think I would like it but I ended up LOVING it. Unfortunately, it's a seasonal flavor that they don't do often but I will say, all of their other flavors are amazing as well. Street parking only but it's located in the downtown area which is cute and filled with small town charm! By the way, they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. So make sure you have some or else you can use the atm that they have located inside their establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good ice cream in a very cute town. I'm not from the area so this icecream shop was recommended. The prices are reasonable and there was seating inside and out. I wish we had this on Long Island. I definitely recommended this charming shop

Yelp
You guys need to stop by this place if you're in town. OMG how delicious and creamy their ice creams are! The little down side is they don't give out samples, I mean I did ask and they said no but it's ok. Their ice creams are so creamy and delicious, you can taste the freshness right away. I got the muddy chocolate I believe that's the name and Tahitian Vanilla I believe, best choice for me and no regrets. Also, make sure you have cash handy because they're only taking cash and please don't forget your masks. The place have benches outside so you can enjoy your ice cream, the location is pretty nice and they place is super clean! Please consider stopping by and try them, I promise you you won't regret it. When it comes to ice cream, I sort of know lol.
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Hands down some of the best ice cream you'll find in NJ. All of their options are homemade and flavors seem to always change. I haven't had a flavor I didn't like however my favorite was the watermelon chunk...wish that was a flavor all year round. They're cash only but they have an atm inside.
google avatar

Tulshi P.

Yelp
The ice cream is so creamy and delicious! I tried peanut butter and toasted coconut and loved them both. I usually never try these flavors but decided to stick to something less unique during my first visit to Nicholas Creamery. The quantity is great for the price too! I would definitely visit again!
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Had a cookies and cream milkshake, and it was just how you would want it: thick enough to not be milky, thin enough to hoover up Oreo crunchies from the bottom of the cup. Five outta five stars all by itself. BONUS: took a pint home of cookies and cream, took it straight out of the freezer the next day, and it was still as buttery soft and super creamy as if it were straight out the frozen cow. That's how you get ice cream, right?
google avatar

Eugene A.

Yelp
Fun and creative flavors made in small batches. We tried the blueberry and brownie batter. The blueberry was light but flavorful and the brownie was rich and heavy. Both really good.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
I definitely have to update my review to a well deserved 5 stars! When I first tried their ice cream I didn't care for it. Multiple people told me to come back and try it again that their ice cream is is excellent. The ice cream tastes totally different from when they first opened. It's FANTASTIC now! It's definitely in my top 3 picks for best ice cream in NJ, and believe me I just about tried almost everywhere! The ice cream was nice and creamy, and it had no artificial taste whatsoever. You can tell it's made with premium ingredients. Today I had the pumpkin cheesecake, peanut butter palooza, and chocolate brownie bake flavors. All 3 flavors were mind blowing good! I have one regret and that's ordering the large and not the pint! Nicholas Creamery is totally worth the drive and the calories! I highly recommend Nicholas Creamery in Atlantic Highlands!
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
Came here during COVID. There's a table at the entrance so you can get close to where the employees stand behind the counter. There's a sign in the store with the ice cream flavors. Everything is to-go. The ice cream was good. It melted pretty quickly. There seemed a be a good amount of activity on a weekend day. Glad to see homemade ice cream places in the area.
google avatar

Helene L.

Yelp
wow a really great, unique local ice cream spot! All of there flavors are hand made in small batches and their flavors change frequently. I went with some family and though you can't sit inside they had several benches outside for people to sit. I was happy to see they had a vegan option made from coconut milk. It was a black raspberry flavor that I tried and was absolutely delicious! I also tried Peaches N cream and was surprised at the chunks of real peach in it. The ice cream was very creamy and delicious I was super impressed! my friend who's son has a few allergies was also able to find a flavor for his dietary needs and he also loved it. If I go again i'm definitely going to get the ice cream flight so I can try as many flavors as possible. It was 6 flavors for around $8 which is a pretty good deal. Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area!
google avatar

Ruth G.

Yelp
I absolutely love that this creamery has many different flavor options than other typical ice cream shops. There waffle cones are home made and was baked fresh when we arrived. My sister and I ordered a medium cone which allowed for 2 flavors and it was enormous! Definitely picture worthy! I ordered the tiramisu and tres leches flavor. Taste was right on! I also loved that they offered a vegan option ice cream made from coconut milk. My vegan friend said that the coconut flavor was strong over powering the really flavor that she chose. Staff is super nice and there is few seating options. Huge parking lot so no need to worry about finding parking.

Brutus W.

Yelp
terrible. I went in to get a milkshake at a quarter to eight with the place closing at 9. and some long greasy haired teen with glasses was bickering with me and didn't even end up making the milkshake for my girlfreind. place is a disgrace! never coming back.

Allison R.

Yelp
While I hadn't been to the area in years, stopping here was 100% in our plans. Drive - fly - jump - swim - whatever. Just get here. Hands down the most amazing ice cream we've had in years !!!! Only wish there were a location in ocean county too
google avatar

Harry P.

Yelp
Great little local Ice Cream joint. They have a great selection of homemade ice cream. The inside has a great feel, very clean, nice atmosphere for the kids. I got 2 scoops one of espresso and one of mint chocolate chip (my 2 favs). I got to say this is some of the highest quality Ice cream I have had in a long time. The mint packed a punch, so stay away if you aren't a mint lover, for me it was a perfect balance, cooling for a humid summer day. The espresso was like drinking a latte, not overly sweet, with a good balance of bitterness from the coffee flavor. If I lived in the area I would gain 100lbs from this place!

Yelp
We went opening day and I was surprised how quickly they got thru the line without any major hiccups. Been back once since then. Overall, I am giving 3.5 but rounded up because I am always glad to see new businesses in town. The ice cream is very good, the GOAT may sound weird but it's delicious as well as the bourbon ice cream. I will say the ice cream is very soft, and does melt quickly, not sure that this is a reason to give a place one star. I don't know how they make the ice cream but maybe that's because of the natural, farm-to-table ingredients. But, it could be the freezer is off a few degrees. So, I wouldn't walk around town on a hot day with a cone, there wouldn't be much left. But it is delicious to scarf down anyway. Where they lose the 1.5 stars is cash only, it's 2018, opening a new cash only business is absurd. Most new businesses are going cashless, the only people who carry a lot of cash are guidos and grandparents. It's the cost of doing business. This is a barrier for me coming, I don't want an errand to have to enjoy ice cream. So if you have a family of 4, having to get cash out is a pain. It's really disappointing. But, yeah if I have cash I will definitely stop by.
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
So happy this opened! Best ice cream, so fresh and great ingredients! The Hudson coffee is unreal!! The chocolate is amazing too. Can't wait to go again and again!
google avatar

Brendan B.

Yelp
The best I've cream around! They make all of their ice cream in small batches with local ingredients. They always have at least 8 different flavors to choose from, sometimes more! A few of the fan favorite ice creams stick around for a while but they usually have new seasonal flavors coming out a few times a month. Friendly staff and the place is always clean with a bright atmosphere. It's basically "craft" ice cream!
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
idk who but one of the workers there was SO rude. I went there with a kid I was babysitting and I was ONE DOLLAR short. She would not give us our ice cream. We will not be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
A gourmet artisan ice cream parlor in the heart of Atlantic Highlands. Owner of Nicholas restaurant in Middletown. Traditional and creative flavors served, fully organic ice cream and several vegan flavors. Farm to spoon as their T-shirts say. This is not a typical ice cream place, however they offer toppings, homemade waffle cones and milk shakes too. The ice cream is delicious, creamy and flavorful. You can tell it is homemade by first taste. I love different so I needed to try the Basil cocoa nib, which was amazing. The Jersey Blueberry was also fantastic and what I liked the most about it, that it wasn't overly sweet. The perfect amount of sweet with fresh blueberries. The chocolate chip mint is truly for mint fans, which I am. A pure delight. A treat for adults as the ice cream to me is well worth the experience. I would definitely opt to skip dessert at a local restaurant and enjoy a chief inspired creation here.

Yelp
Bro just do ur taste buds a favor and go. Apparently I need more characters so... hi and goodbye

Yelp
Let me start off by saying I love ice cream. Some people love pizza, others love steak or bbq, but I love ice cream. When I used to live in Manhattan, I would go out of my way to go find ice cream from local, small-batch ice cream shops. That was a good time. So when I saw that Nicholas Creamery opened in Atlantic Highlands, boy was I excited to try it out. So imagine me prancing down the street hoping to get a scoop of what appears to be the best thing since sliced bread in the area, judging from the constant stream of people lining up for it. I get there, I patiently deal with the attitude from high school kids who work there because who cares, I'm here for the ice cream and I want my delicious cold dessert, dammit! I take my first bite and.... I find that the ice cream is truly mediocre. My eyes are tearing up as I'm overwhelmed with a deluge of righteous pity, misery and just overall disappointment at how people would actually line up for this nonsense. Y'all never have had ice cream before, obviously. Ramblings aside, save your money and go buy a full quart of Breyers from the Foodtown down the street for about the same price. It'll taste better. Seriously. The people saying this is 5 star worthy ice cream need to have the ice cream gods open their eyes and try other things. I'm not saying you have low standards, but you probably shouldn't be judging ice cream, honestly. Go back to judging steak. or burgers.
google avatar

Cydney B.

Yelp
This is a great ice cream shop! Small batch focus with thoughtful flavors. Had the coffee crunch (omg tasted like straight up espresso) and coconut Carmel. Gets busy, cash only. Line moves fast!
google avatar

jeanne b.

Yelp
They have great dairy free options. The vegan coconut cherry was delicious. Its clean, staffed properly and the icecream and toppings are great. Go!

Robert J.

Yelp
Best homemade ice cream and hot fudge around. Creative flavors. Price and portions are very fair.
google avatar

Jane C.

Yelp
Butter pecan ice cream here is on point! No seating because of covid :/ I will go back!
google avatar

Alyson P.

Yelp
Cash only. Flavors on the website were not all in person. Gingerbread flavor had odd candied ginger chunks and eggnog flavor tasted iced. Workers were friendly and extremely helpful!
google avatar

Gabby C.

Yelp
I love this ice cream place, it is so good. Waffle cones amazballs! Pb ice cream can marry me wife me up! Its so fricken good i reccomend evryone to eat here. 11/10

Michael H.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite ice cream in NJ! Whether you go to the Atlantic Highlands or Fair Haven store / you will always get fast and very friendly service. The prices and portions are extremely reasonable. Flavors change as they have them and seasonal - always a tough decision to choose as they are all fantastic. I do not live anywhere near either location - I go out of my way to satisfy my craving for extremely fresh and tasty ice cream! This ice cream never bothers my stomach as they use nothing but the freshest ingredients. Over 20x visited so far and never disappointed. I met the owner when Atlantic Highlands store first opened. It is no surprise to me that these stores have been successful! I look forward to continuing to get awesome ice cream and to also try the updated restaurant soon. Thank you!

Jim M.

Yelp
The place is nice looking. People friendly. Flavors are creative. They use local product which is great. Everything is amazing. Except the ice cream. It is full of air and not creamy at all. I would expect dense creamy home made ice cream. I got airy light icy stuff. I don't get it.
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
I totally lucked out coming here today. After a day at the beach, I was jonesing for some soft serve and Nicholas Creamery was close by. I feel very dumb now but when I walked in I was disappointed that they didn't have soft serve. I read the reviews after I housed my waffle cone and realized my good fortune in coming in the late afternoon. According to other reviews, the place is very popular at night. I tasted several flavors before deciding on two in my medium waffle cone: butter pecan and strawberry shortcake. The Kentucky Pig was a close third: bacon and bourbon.
google avatar

A B.

Yelp
Although it has unique flavors and small batch, small town charm. The ice cream itself isn't that creamy at all. It's actually quite icy. I suggest the owners go try Torico or ample hills in Jersey city. Then go back to your test kitchen. This place has a lot of potential but needs to prefect the recipes!

Nick S.

Yelp
First off, cash only, I absolutely hate places like this. It just screams, "I'm greedy and want to make as much as possible, while lying to the IRS." Then when I realized this is the same Nicholas from the Middletown restaurant, it all made sense. $16.00 for 2 milkshakes that tasted like a glass of whole milk, with no taste of ice cream whatsoever? No thanks, won't be returning.
google avatar

Christel N.

Yelp
Delicious homemade style ice-cream in original flavors like country day cannoli and carrot cake. Homemade waffle cones and bowls are an added bonus for a little extra crunch. Highly recommended!
