The Best Places to Eat and Drink on Haight Street in the Lower Haight Neighborhood | Eater SF

"If there’s one thing the Lower Haight is not lacking, it’s sports bars with trivia nights. Nickies stands out in the crowd, though, by also serving food. Sure, it’s your typical bar fare (burgers, wings, and nachos), but it’s reasonably priced, tasty, and just what you want when you’re drinking a beer and watching the game. Plus, there’s brunch on the weekends and a cocktail menu with lots of cheap options." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Nice local sports bar with a neighborhood feel. Everyone seems to know each other's names, just like on Cheers. 😊 Large selection of food, including typical pub fare and at least one healthier option like salad. TVs are set to different sports channels, with the sound off and music playing in the background. If they're not playing the game you want, just ask them to change the channel and they're more than happy to oblige. Bar is a bit chilly so you may want a jacket if you'll be hanging out for a while watching a game. Dog friendly.

These are cool people. We will be back. Onion rings and your ranch is the bomb, yo! Thanks Paulina.

Was here to watch the Champions League final. Wow! What a crew rubbing this place! Pub is filled to its edges, and the two ladies in the bar just power through in a tempo I've never seen at a bar before. In this chaos they manage to stay super friendly and nice to everyone. Extremely impressed with how this bar handled it! I hope the manager give these two ladies in the picture, the kitchen, and the guy running around serving the food a good raise.

Passively came to this bar to kill some time and ended up loving it! Migo was awesome and very cool to talk to. Food was good too! Great vibe and great staff.

A friend of mine and I were out last night trying to get into the holiday spirit, and that brought us here to Nickies. It felt like we were transported back to 1950. It was very clear we were not welcomed at all. The waitress and bar tender treated us horrible. Helping us last night, you can tell we were not welcomed or wanted in this establishment. Horrible Horrible service. We ordered wings horrible and fries. When the food came she never came back when it was time to leave I had to stand at the bar to get checked out. When I asked where the waitress she was at the end of the bar. The 2 women that was their last night were horrible and they did not want us sitting at their counter.

Can't think of a better place for breakfast and football every sunday. Friendly staff, good drink selection, reasonable prices.

Google
This individual is fraudulent. Initially, he provided a bill for $54 but ultimately charged me $84. Furthermore, his response was unsatisfactory, as if he implied that he offers complimentary alcohol. I only became aware of this discrepancy when I noticed that on another occasion, he charged me $64 when the bill should have been $54.

Fun atmosphere, exciting and hot bartender, and the owner Nikki is very welcoming and gorgeous.

Yelp
All the bar food was good, I particularly loved the onion rings! This is a very classic neighborhood bar, nothing fancy but a fine option for a drink. The others here seemed to be friends with the bartenders, so a good vibe!

Will P.

Yelp
The waitresses here are absolutely rude and unprofessional, amongst other negative traits. Stay far away. There are far too many nearby better options.

Yelp
Great atmosphere , burger was good , bartenders were great . But was really surprised to find blood on my pint of Guinness . Someone serving it must have cut their hand? Not sure but it was pretty gross. I don't usually leave reviews but that should never happen . The bartender was really nice though and got me another drink , so gotta be happy about that .

Yelp

Yelp
My buddy and I dropped in to catch the warriors game! Loved the big space and we grabbed a pitcher with some delicious nachos and FRICKLES!!! Definitely want to go back and try other foods!

Yelp
Sigh I hate to leave this review bc I absolutely love going to trivia nights here even though my team always does terrible. I came here with a few friends last week for trivia night and got the worst food poisoning of my life. We ordered chili cheese fries, wings that came with celery and carrots, and fried cauliflower. Everything tasted fine but later that evening, I began to feel queasy and started throwing up from 3am - 10am. The food poisoning has lasted a week and I even had to go to the ER at one point for stomach pain. I initially thought it was the chili cheese fries that got me but apparently everyone ate that. By process of elimination, we think it was actually the carrots and celery, since I ate most of it and the only other person who ate a few felt a bit nauseous. Tldr: I still love the vibes of nickies and trivia is p great. I have come to trivia here a few times and this is my first time dying so hence the 3 stars instead of 1. I'll still come back for trivia but probably just won't order food and will get a beer instead

Yelp
Amazing food and great vibes for a neighborhood bar! Fresh juices for the drinks, the Sage Hey Kid is delicious

Yelp
Came by for trivia night, which happens on Tuesdays at 7pm. My friend made a reservation, which is recommended for trivia night. Nickie's is a cozy spot with an incredibly friendly staff. The menu offers typical bar drinks and bites- whether you're craving a strong drink or a light beer, a snack or a meal, you'll find something here. The trivia was well-organized and decently challenging. It wasn't as large or elaborate as other bar trivias I've been to, but it was a good time nonetheless!

Matthew K.

Yelp
You might read a review from a prior patron who was upset. Something about "blowing his nose." That was, in fact, the nose blower. As it often is. Don't be gross at the bar, dude, and you'll be fine. Also, bud - I'm not affiliated with the bar. Just happened to be in for a drink.

Yelp
Surprised I haven't written a review for this place, also surprised there are so many rave reviews. I mean, the place is solid - you get exactly what you expect - a dive-ish sports bar, lots of TVs and seating, etc. However, the food is super duper sub par and the bartenders aren't always the most friendly. Regardless, we'll continue to come here as long as we live in the area. Been here at least 3-4 times now. I've had the burger, chicken wings, cauliflower, and the bistec con papas. The Yucantan/Mexican food is not that great in my experience, at least not the bistec. Super flavorless. The burger was about the same, nothing special and over salted, not cooked as I requested. Wings were also whatever, but the buffalo cauliflower was good! Overall kind of what you expect from a place like this, nothing more nothing less.

Yelp
I work near Nickie's - but I come here more than every other day, not out of necessity or even though convenience (though obviously it's conveniently located for me) There are MANY reason to come here! Get here! #1 Staff -- from owner to bartenders to the chef -- kind, cool and knowledgeable and ready to help #2 Food -- any bar can pour a shot... but getting seriously consistent excellent food!! That's a challenge most bars don't rise to the occasion for. Nickie's chef makes it happen EVERY day with specials too! (Thank you clam chowder --inspiring this review as I wolf it down in Between words) So many great things it seems limited to list.. but grilled chicken FTW -- pulled pork torta and mole hiding on the menu as fabulous and unexpected! -- Turkey chili skillet and Caesar salad w grilled chicken to delight anytime -- and a Reuben not to be missed! #3 Cleanliness -- SO clean! Bar, restrooms, floors, kitchen (all open to view!) yay #4 Atmosphere -- excellent sports bar tv locations and selections, tons of seating, a couple outdoor spots for smoking inclined guests, cool people selecting cool music that can appeal to quite a few + everything has a place in this bar and makes sense and was done in excellent taste No photos because I inhale all food instantly here

Yelp
I just came by Nickie's for the first time since pre-Covid, and I think they have new management or something. They have a new Yucatán menu (on top of the normal bar food) that is really great! I came for the Tuesday 7:00 trivia, and it was a great vibe! The trivia was really fun, and the food was delicious! We had the bistec con papas and la cochinita - I highly recommend both!

Yelp
Nickies! Really solid sports bar in the Haight! Came here the other night, right around the shift change. It seemed like I arrived when it was regulars and people who work in the area grabbing a bite before their shift. I was totally ready for booze, and the staff didn't disappoint. They had multiple TV's up, playing various games. Really good bar to watch games and such. After a bit, I realized I should food up before more boozing. Responsible drinking is my middle name, if I had one. One of the staff highly recommended the fish sandwich. OMG. Seriously the biggest piece of fish ever. Basically they slapped a fish and chips in the middle of two buns and adding some tomatoes. The price to quantity ratio was spot on, and the fish was moist and yummy. After my friend arrived, we also had an order of the naked wings...which was just okay. Probably should get something tossed. Without the sauce, the wings were on the dry side. Also SHOUT OUT to the bartender, Mito! He had me happily drinking but never too much.

Yelp
Millertime Trivia at Nickies on Tuesdays. 100% original, unscripted, and entertaining. The Best.

Yelp
I don't ever write reviews but I felt unsafe and unwelcome at this bar. It's a very sketchy place and the bartender is insane, rude and probably drunk. The bartender's friends were the only ones there and they were also very drunk and aggressive. We went in because my friend had to use the bathroom and we got some beers because we didn't want to be rude. We left immediately because they turned up the music so loud that we couldn't talk. We realized walking back home that my friend left her purse on the chair at the bar and when we went back, they kept trying to kick us out and didn't help at all. One of them kept threatening us when we were waiting outside for the cops and the bartender didn't do anything about it considering that this person was his friend. After waiting for an hour, we finally left and got home and the bartender called us immediately and said he "found it" and gaslighted my friend into thinking she left it at a spot that none of us even knew existed because we only sat at the bar and we left immediately after ordering our beers. We will never be going back and would never recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Great place for warrior games Good food, friendly staff and the bathrooms were immaculate Will definitely be back for more games

Yelp
Time: 1:30PM Date: Tuesday 10/20/2020 Price: $$ Dishes ordered: Bistec con papas COVID safety: 4.5/5 Service: 5/5 Flavor: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Portion size: 3.5/5 Had lunch in the parklet right outside. The sun warmed me up perfectly as I waited for my food. Everything came out in plastic recyclable containers (with plastic utensils as well). No one else was out at the restaurant, which I loved, so COVID safety wasn't an issue. Waiter was very nice, nothing stood out. Rice and beans were phenomenal, but the cut of beef was unexpected given the description of "stew". It was a little salty but overall quite good. Though the dish looked small, I was much fuller than I had expected. Would definitely come again, but only if I happened to be in the area.

Asif K.

Yelp
It's a great neighborhood spot! Steph will definitely get your drinks with a smile or serve some of her specialty cocktails.. ( 5 *****) Excellent food! Fish and chips is my favourite. (5 *****) The only issue here is the ketchup! it is second grade.. no heinz. (1 *...) I hope they go back to HEINZ!HEINZ!HEINZ!

Yelp
We came here yesterday and loved it! Down to earth staff and really great energy. The chef was running behind so they gave us complimentary chips and salsa which was awesome. They were rocking indie hits and had both Irish and Mexican food. We tried the corned beef reuben and look forward to coming back for the pork plate. Great area with tons of character, would definitely recommend coming here then walking down Haight to the vintage shops.

Yelp
A good neighborhood bar if you're in the lower haight. Out of my way to get here but the food was really good and drinks as well. Good prices. Good amount of tables and chairs. A good hang out spot. Our server last night was a bit slow. Didn't really ask if we needed anything, we had to flag her down, sorry chased her down. That was a bummer. But lets go WARRIORS!

Yelp
I liked it so much I went twice - in one day! Around noon I wandered in looking to kill a bit of time while my tattoo artist finished up my sketch. I didn't want to drink before my tattoo but they had so many temptations it was a struggle to say no. They were offering an awesome brunch menu when we stumbled in and though I wasn't hungry there is no such thing as too much food when you get a tattoo. I opted for a pancake. The bartender was kind enough to tell me they were quite large so I opted for just one. Thank goodness because they were quite large. 1 was plenty for a "snack." When it arrived I cut it open and saw the yummy mascarpone inside. I added a tiny amount of maple syrup and bit into heaven. I get nervous about the first bit of any pancake - will it be mush, will it be crunchy, will it have flavor or just be weird batter. The mascarpone was great inside of the pancake. Great flavor. It was so good in fact I told my wife we should come by after my tattoo and try their dinner menu. Yes, there are plenty of options in the area but c'mon a slamming fancy pancake for brunch necessitates a return trip... within a few hours if possible - haha. Many hours later, after my tattoo was finished, we wandered back in for drinks and dinner. We rolled up to the bar and settled in on the comfortable barstools. Why do I mention they are comfortable? My wife has trouble sitting at bars because her feet never touch the floor or the barstool cross bar. These however had the perfect size cushion as well as a foot rest. I feel for everyone else on the short side height wise, this is a perk. I ordered the rib eye and wifey opted for the shrimp po' boy. The rib eye was delivered about halfway through my beer. I don't usually like brussels sprouts but apparently, once drowned in sugar and vinegar, I am a huge fan! The rib eye had good flavor but the flavoring was a bit strong by the time I was approaching the last few bites. The potatoes were great and had the skins mixed in which broke up the texture for a nice change. The wifey wanted more heat in her po' boy but aside from lacking the spice and heat she said the portion was nice. Overall, the vibe and food in this place are both awesome. Come in, watch a game, chat with some friends and enjoy this place.

Yelp
Omggg that shepherds pie!! Ridiculous. I am very particular and picky and it was on point. It is made with beef not lamb but packed with flavor and def from scratch. Also.. I love my ranch but I am particular and will not touch hidden valley or any anything that tastes processed. Ranch is house made. Last.. those Brussel sprouts! Also on point. I was here in the day and was very quiet but great atmosphere and the bartender was so sweet and gave me a bunch of good places to visit in the city. Def a place to check out for good food and relaxing atmosphere

Yelp
Went here last night, Monday 3/20 at 10pm. We looked at the hours on Yelp and it stated the bar closes at 12. We walked in and were immediately told they were closing but they will serve one drink. We decided to sit down and we could tell we weren't welcome. We were treated extremely rude. I get it people have bad days but wow. Please don't visit this place. There are so many other great places to support. Don't bother coming here. Rude service.

Ellis B.

Yelp
Had an incredibly bad experience with the bartender who was being very sketchy/rude and I wouldn't recommend this place. Stay away!

Yelp
This place was great, I ordered takeout steak nachos and bar nachos never seem to disappoint me‼ The cook got down and the meat was season and tender to perfection. I loved how the pico de Gallo tasted. Just maybe extra sour cream next time lol if though you have to pay for it. It was still excellent I will be back. I work right across the street. Love the setup will be back to watch a game and chill!

Yelp
Oh Nickies, why don't I visit you more often? I need to trek outside the 'Divisadero Corridor' and check out the gems that Lower Haight has to offer. Nickies is one of them. Nickies is a solid and well maintained Irish joint with TVs throughout the bar area, and even a DJ booth. When my friends and I stopped by a few weeks ago, the DJ was playing some digalicious old and modern beats. Thankfully, the music wasn't too loud so we could actually hear each other. Nickies is stocked with your standard spirits and plenty of beer on tap. Can you say HO? HO HO HO (Tis the season, hee hee)! Yup, they have my beloved Hoegaarden on tap! Awesomeness! Not many bars have this gorgeous white and refreshing Belgian beer on tap, so I didn't think twice about what my drink of choice would be for the evening. It doesn't always have to be about the Grey Goose for me, as I like to mix it up. AnywHOoters, I had to have a few rounds of the HO, ya know? Will need to return to NIckies to maybe check out their Monday Trivia Night, but most definitely to try their food, and to get more HO on tap! Cheers!

Yelp
I love this place - it has a weird home town feel in the middle of San Francisco. The food is amazing, get the Ruben, and the bartenders and staff are all incredibly nice. Giving the 5th star because one of the bartenders (Chris? Tall bald guy) poured out half full water glasses and ice cube into the street trees because of the drought. I loved that and I'll keep going back.

John B.

Yelp
Dive bar/Sports bar. Great bartenders. Decent food. TVs everywhere for the game. Great crowd on game days.

Dave M.

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in San Francisco! Great food; Love their fish and chips! Prefect spot to meet with up with friends and watch a game. Chris is great, love him to death!

Yelp
Wanted to check out a new place for brunch and bottomless mimosas. Found Nickies on Yelp and definitely thought we should try it out! First off, if you are trying to find a place that is a crazy, fun, a place with loud music, etc. this is not the place to go. My group and I weren't trying to find a place like that, but thought of something more mellow but the same kind of vibes. Nickies was more of a calm place as a whole. The bottomless mimosas in particular were pretty good, not the best I've ever had, but they got the job done. At one point, we asked the server if we could just have the carafe they were using rather so we could fill them up ourselves. The food was really good too, definitely not something we were expecting. I got the breakfast burrito with the hash brown casserole. It was delicious! The pricing for food was what you would normally pay in San Francisco for brunch, so we were not surprised.
google avatar

Daniel Z.

Yelp
Came here to watch the warriors on a weekday night. Good vibes, lively bar. The bartender was nice too.
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great happy hour spot after work, that also serves great food - Nickies is your spot. Happy hour goes until 7, so there is plenty of time for dollar off pints and $5 wells. The whiskey BBQ wings and the shrimp tacos were so good. Left very full & happy.
google avatar

Dorothy M.

Yelp
Came in to watch the rest of the Huskies game because we needed a bar with hard liquor!!! It was a late night the kitchen was closing but the bar was still open. We ordered devil eggs and wings. The devil eggs are AMAZING!!!!!!!! The best devil eggs I have ever had and that is saying a lot because my sister can put her foot in some devil eggs. So DEVIL EGGS are a WINNER!! The wings: the Guinness wings are to dieeee for!!!! Like I couldn't stop eating them! The sauce is amazing!!!!! You can't go wrong with the Guinness wings. It's like a smoky BBQ flavor!! I be back for these as well.
google avatar

Huey N.

Yelp
This is definately a locals spot. People walking in and out all seem to know each other. The drinks are darn cheap - at least the whiskey gingers. I ordered food for the first time today. The mahi tacos I got were pretty spot on. I scarfed them down immediately. The fish was cooked well and had a lot of flavor. They have two types of Yucateco hot sauce!
google avatar

Bridget H.

Yelp
The drinks and the ambiance were fine, our bartender got to us quickly, although she seemed annoyed with having to serve us. The food tasted okay but it was very clear that it was prepared using a microwave (not only by the look and feel but also because we watched the guy in the kitchen). Clearly the microwaved plate was so hot that they had to put it on another plate in order to serve it to customers. In other words, definitely go for the reasonably priced drinks, quick service, and great atmosphere, but if you're looking for a decent bite to eat, head elsewhere. There are several great options in the area.

Yelp
I was visiting San Francisco for work and had about 6 hours to explore the city on my last day. It was Sunday and I was craving eggs or french toast, because I'm predictable. A little after 11am, there wasn't much open in the area and I found a sports bar with a high rating show up on my brunch search -- Nickies. A little timid, I decided to check it out. An unassuming bar with surprisingly good food. There weren't many people in the establishment yet, but a couple of ladies at the bar with DOGS, and I was living. Anyway, they let me seat myself anywhere so I took a booth near the window where I could people watch and also watch soccer on the TVs. The bar itself is large, with lots of seating, especially toward the back. Bathrooms are also clean, which I think says a lot about how you run a restaurant/bar. They don't have a huge menu, for good reason, so when my server came around, I was set on the breakfast burrito, which comes with a free side, so I ordered the hash browns. I waited maybe less than 10 minutes for the food to arrive. For a sports bar, the presentation was beautiful and burrito was even better. I loved that they included little potato slices inside the burrito. A+. Also came with a side of pico. Hash browns were also hot and delicious, and a larger portion than I expected. Prices are what you'd expect -- around $13 for an entree, but honestly, life is too short to eat shitty food. From my perspective, Nickies seems to be a consistent, reliable go-to for no frills brunch food. I'd love to come back and try out that mimosa special next time.
google avatar

Lillian B.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for games and it's never been overly crowded, but still with enough people around so that it didn't feel barren! The onion rings and fish tacos were some of my favorite food buys from Nickies. Another honorable mention is their chicken wings, which are smaller and what I prefer. Plenty of options on tap and there is a weekday happy hour. They have a lot of TVs, making it a solid spot for sports.
google avatar

Jana M.

Yelp
Nickies is my living room outside of my living room!! Stef, James, and Paulina are amazing, and I love that Stefani makes custom cocktails she's passionate about! so fresh and classic! Also... those nachos!!

Hank W.

Yelp
sketchy and horrible, rude wait staff. find the closest place that serves alcohol that's not this place and go there instead, it will will be worth your time.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Been coming here infrequently for a few years. Was a good place. Not sure what changed recently but some new direction of management changes and severe staffing shortage have created problems with service, especially with the food.
google avatar

Luci H.

Yelp
I've been told this neighborhood is called Lower Haight, well there's nothing to Haight about this place.. get it? Puns aside, the food here is surprisingly good. You'd think a sports bar in a nondescript location would be questionable, but everything we had was great. That included the Deviled Eggs, Fries, and Bruschetta (thanks to the previous reviews). I ordered the Fries with the Lemon Aoili and I can't recommend the combo enough. Fancy mayo should be sold in bulk. The last notable thing was the service. Our waitress and the bartender, too were friendly and engaging. She definitely made someone like me surrounded by sports fans comfortable. Top notch.

Jj J.

Yelp
Classic neighborhood bar with above average pub food (highly recommend the burger). Bartenders are friendly and unlike some establishments are willing to tune into that obscure game--Raptors vs. Heat anyone? Reasonable prices too. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

E J.

Yelp
As the Duke of Nickies I must say it is one of the finest parts of my kingdom. Monday's are the best with the double threat of WWE RAW hosted by SFWWC and Brainstormers Trivia after. I will grant any serf a full days leave to visit this event. Positive: Open to big groups and events, clean bathrooms, brunch, and great service. Negative: no temp control (hot on hot days cold on cold days), no tap cleaning, no fun events.
google avatar

Yelp
Had an Amazing time at this new Chelsea Fc Bar. The supporters are so motivated and loud! Let's go Chelsea Definitely coming back. Great food and drinks. And they open early for all the matches. Also they are a Chelsea Fc Certified official Bar. This is awesome! No better place to watch the games in the Bay. Nickies Bar has my vote!! Had an awesome time!
google avatar

Curtis L.

Yelp
Just had the grilled chicken sandwich which is wonderful and also came with French fries and we all got a free beer that comes with meals!! Will be back very soon thank you Yuri for helping make it a great lunch!!
google avatar

Oscar T.

Yelp
I like coming here on Sundays for all the football games. Julien, the bartender, is always friendly and on top of things. I just wish he had some support behind the bar or to run food orders. Seems that most Sundays he's on his own and it can delay things. Order the famous Kezar buffalo wings and Breakfast is delicious too, especially the chorizo scramble.
google avatar

Janice C.

Yelp
I have to be in the mood for beer. (Yeah, so sorry to disappoint, I guess I can never be just one of the guys with a snap of a finger.) Unfortunately for me, a lot of the pubs/bars we passed by within one block radius of Memphis Minnies didn't have a full bar. Except for Nickies. Nickies is clean and roomy with a curved long bar near the entrance and lots of banquets and tables to one side. I went with my standard G&T. I also spied lots of brown sugar on the shelf including Knob's Creek and Maker's Mark. Draft beer lovers will be happy to know that Trumer Pils and Hoegaarden are on tap. The prices weren't absurd so we were happy about that. I'll keep this place in mind when I'm in the area since they have a full kitchen as well. Trivia night is every Monday.

Yelp
Sports bars aren't really my thing, but if you're just getting drinks you could do worse. They have Shiner Bock on tap which is always appreciated and the barstaff/waitresses are all awesome. Unfortunately the kitchen has failed me one too many times. My last three meals here have consisted of 1) An $8 blt on untoasted bread cut into four pieces with so little bacon on it that one of the pieces didn't have ANY bacon it it. That's right, it was a lettuce and tomato sandwich. 2) Irish bacon and cabbage that was COLD and the cabbage was horribly undercooked 3) Fried chicken that was so overcooked and dry that it was nearly black served with cold mash Add too this the ripoff appetizer prices and you have a sports bar where ordering anything that isn't in liquid form is a bad idea. Which is a damned shame because otherwise it's a pretty cool joint.
