Philly’s Best Barbecue Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater Philly

"Come to Nick’s Charcoal Pit in South Philly for the filet mignon sandwich (charbroiled, stuffed between a Sarcone’s roll with spinach and cheese) and stay for the barbecue. The ribs fall off the bone and the wings are charred hard and crisp." - Ernest Owens

I had the BBQ Chicken & Baby Back Ribs combo platter which consists of 6 ribs and 2 leg & thigh quarters, plus FFs and tasty cole slaw. Well cooked meats with ample amounts of bbq sauce. Do they offer other bbq sauces? I need to check next time. Need to try their fillet mignon sandwiches too. Good service, relatively quick (15min), and clean establishment. Definitely recommend.

DELICIOUS BBQ!!! I'm a person who is perfectly happy eating simple meals at home, but after trying Nicks one day when I was having a BBQ craving (also because a menu was put on my door. It worked fellas, lol). It was so good that I ordered again the very next day, which I have never done with any restaurant. Call the place for delivery before using a 3rd party service, its worth it. Great prices and the food has always arrived piping hot. Don't know how ya do it fellas, keep it up!

Alright, so, I come here, counter girl was super nice, gave my dog some bacon, me thinking "my dog don't like no bacon" she ate that, and when I open my cheese steak, it has real steak! It's delicious!! I will be returning soon!

Nicks BBQ I ordered thru Grubhub on 11/07/2020. The rib and wing combo was quite delish and delivered hot for $16.95. Be prepared to wait 1 hour and 30 mins. Their tasty meats were cooked and sauced perfectly. I prefer my bbq cooked like Nick does it, old school, but my bf prefers the extreme smoke with a dry rub. The rib was my fav, it brought back nostalgic memories of great fam backyard bbq’s. The wings were good but whole wings are not my fav and they were tiny. I suggest buying the next size up. To my surprise, the fries were still crispy but there was soo few, only about 13 fries? I want more fries next time, Nick! Also, their well-known filet mignon sandwichy was good. Keep in mind, filet mignon costs about $6 more a pound that great cheesesteak meat, therefore don’t expect the meat to overflow the lovely sarcone’s roll and you won’t be disappointed.

6/13/24…Nick’s was closed for awhile and I was happy to find out they are opened. Ordered a country salad with crispy chicken and a filet mignon sandwich with sweet peppers…so very good. Very nice customer service and fast delivery. 6/30...ordered a half rack of ribs, the country salad with crispy chicken and onion rings. Delivery was fast and food was delicious! One of my personal favorite sandwiches from Nick's Charcoal Pit is their Buffalo Chicken sandwich. The chicken is tender, it has the right amount of heat and blue cheese dressing. We also ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings and they were tasty! The burger was cooked just right, had a lot of flavor and the onion rings weren't greasy.

Just grabbed lunch here. LOVE the family vibes! I got a filet steak and it was phenomenal. My granddaughter got a rib platter and loved it! Highly recommended Nick's!

Everytime I come and get the FILET MIGNON SANDWICH on Italian bread It melts in my mouth ... always perfect.... The owner and staff and friendly and inviting....the cashier she's the best and last but not least the grill masters....I travel any where to get Nick's food.....TRUE FAN

Amazing food, even nicer people. This place is my go-to, i love the salads and the rib platters are so good

Yelp
I will occasionally eat seafood and enjoyed the flavorful shrimp sandwich w/o cheese. I did not see an option for "no cheese" at the third party delivery site. I called directly and spoke with Cierra who was great with answering questions about the menu and placing my order for delivery. My son absolutely loves the Filet Mignon sandwich. I would post a pic of his sandwich, but it was more stomach worthy. Lol

Yelp
The food years ago was unbelievable, they closed for a while.after just opening I decided to order. Besides after pre ordering and they arrived over 20 min late. And the prices went up! The food in no way resembles the food they once offered. Ribs were tuff, the Bq sauce was very acidic and thin. (Used to be thick and beautiful and rich) The salad was horrible. Even with ordering extra feta. I do not know if there is new owners or not!I do know it was not worth the crazy money that was soent. It use to be the best place ever, I am sad and annoyed it's not any longer .

Yelp
Steak was overpriced and bland. Seafood cakes didn't taste like seafood. Only got 2 teaspoons of coleslaw. Ribs average and overpriced a lot. Dry chicken..

Yelp
I live down the street and have been ordering from Nick's Charcoal Pit for years. I always order the filet mignon special with an order of mozzarella sticks, both are delicious! They use Sarcone's second to none bread for their sandwiches which are a Philly staple and famous nationally. Kind service, and Joe will go out of his way to make sure your food is great. I'm glad to see they are open again, the place looks fresh and revitalized!

Yelp
While I can't really comment on most of trier menu items, I do really enjoy their file mingion steak sandwiches. The bread is always fresh and the meat is full of flavor. I hope they finish their renovations asap and reopen soon.

Yelp
Hardly ever disappointed!! Great food ribs sandwiches etc even fries are great bit pricy as cost has gone up but if done well.. well its worth it

Yelp
In terms of a sandwich I'd get again, I might consider Nick's for a filet mignon. The famous filet mignon sandwiches are pretty good with the meat quality and size, but overall, not too special for the price. 10 bucks acn get you a pretty tasty hoagie/sandwich/roll in these parts. The BLT was small, not really flavorful, and led me on a journey to satisfy my BLT craving- it turns out, you can easily make one better at home. Would love to try the BBQ here though. Maybe another type of sandwich as well.

Yelp
Not gonna lie this was a very good sandwich, but with all due respect I was a little bit too hype to try it. Granted the roll was amazing and spinach and cheese added a nice flavor, but it left something to be desired. I think the ratio of bread to meat may not have quite hit the spot for me, as well as the actual flavor of the meat. Somewhat of a charcoal cooked taste but it could have been a little bit more seasoned imo. That being said it was a tasty lunch and filled me up. Definitely would love to try something else from here another time..

Yelp
The Culinary Adventures of Tom Coghlan, FB I have been ordering From Nick's Charcoal Pit since he opened up at 13th and Jackson Sts. in the 90's. I became friendly with Nick and was a great fan of his business! I ordered from him regularly. After some success, Nick moved to 1242 Snyder Ave. After some time, Nick sold his successful business and trained the new owners well. The new owners have been continuing his legacy to the tee, down to Nicks savory house made BBQ Sauce! I basically order two items regularly from Nicks. The first Item I order is The Filet Mignon Sandwich with extra Provolone Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato and an order of Onion Rings on a round seeded Sarcone Roll. I put as many Onion Rings as I can comfortably fit onto the sandwich. The filets are trimmed well and cooked to perfection every time! The seeded Sarcone Round Roll is the coup de gras! SOOooo good! The second item I order are The Ribs! I believe Nick's cooks their ribs slowly in a marinate and grills them to order, rather that dry rubbing and smoking them for many hours. I like both methods and I Can't say I like one more than the other... I like to mix it up... The ribs are tender and juicy, and the meat falls off of the bone. The BBQ Sauce compliments then well!

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite places in south Philly for a great hot meal at home without cooking myself. We've eaten our way around the menu and always find great dishes at good prices. The counter girls are always lovely too. Outstanding meals include: filet sandwich, country chicken sandwich, and the chicken and rib combo. The salads and fries are very generous portions as well.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Great example of very good pieces not working great together. We got Nick's special filet mignon sandwich. Very good filet mignon. I guess for the price of $10.25 it was an appropriate amount. Very good sarcone roll but the roll kind of dominated the sandwich. Cheese, my kingdom for more cheese. Very good news for Mike Rant Sr., Kristen from The Inquirer has taken your title as world's guest eater. She commented that this was a very good sandwich but not a cheesesteak. Good overall experience.

Yelp
2021 My girls and I were in Philly for the weekend and decided to come here to grab a quick bite to eat. I ordered the chicken tenders and fries along with a hot dog. The hot dog was really good but it was so tiny. Before you knew it, I was finished with it in like 2 seconds. lol. My chicken tenders were regular. I honestly should've gotten a burger. I will try that next time. Overall, my food was OK.

Yelp
The problem with this particular Restaurant is not the food so much.... but the prices! God Bless these people if they can get the money that they charge for the food and serving portions that they offer. $9 for a Tossed Salad, $9.25 for a Chicken Breast Sandwich on a KAISER ROLL! $10 for a Sausage Sandwich This my friends are prices Restaurants charge for maybe eating in... but delivery and slightly warm at best. Save your money Eat a bowl of cereal, you'll thank me for it!

Omari T.

Yelp
The idea of the Swordfish Steak sandwich is well put but there's a problem. It has no flavor like at all. Not an ounce of seasoning was there. Please try to revise the menu on putting seasoning on your meats because having a bland sandwich isn't satisfactory at all. If I lick the ground it'll have more seasoning than the sandwiches.
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
This place use to be good the last two times I ordered From here I ordered the tuna steak and both times they gave me swordfish I know my fish being an employee at Samuel and Sons Maybe next I'll try a burger hopefully it all beef

Yelp
This hole-in-the-wall near Broad and Snyder in South Philly is famous for its filet mignon sandwich. This is another one of Philly's incredibly diverse sandwich offerings. I tried one on a Kaiser roll and found it tasty. I did not find it quite as delicious or as large as the filet mignon sandwich I raved about at a similarly named (but unrelated) place in Paoli, but still it's a sandwich hard not to like. You can eat-in or take-out but if you want to add to your sandwich, def order it to-go as there are minimal condiments on offer at this shop.
google avatar

Alexandra G.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place during one of my lunchtime walks in South Philadelphia. The sign said they specialize in Filet Mignon sandwiches- I was sold. I tried the quintessential Nicks sandwich- "Nicks Special" Filet Mignon Char-broiled with Sauteed Spinach and Provolone Cheese. Yum!! The Filet was prepared well-done and was piled on the sandwich. The cheese was melted and stringy and the spinach had excellent flavor. The combo made for a very delicious sandwich. The sandwich comes alone, but you can also make it into a platter with fries and coleslaw. There is only 7 seats in the small dining area. I would suggest you get your order to-go. The people who work here were super friendly and welcoming. My food was ordered and I was rung up and out the door in 5 minutes. Very quick, great service! I will definitely be back again.
google avatar

Denise W.

Yelp
You ever eat a sandwich and don't stop eating it when you are full because it was that good? Yeah, that just happened. I am stuffed. I wish I had a picture of the sandwich. But I ate it. I guess you are going to have to get your own so you can post a picture. The owner did the delivery because they were that busy. It is good to get food from a guy that is willing to do the work along with his people. Pride of ownership shows. I had the filet with spinach on a long roll. I'd eat that again. I am going to have to split it next time, to save myself from my own tastebuds.

Yelp
Tried to order through Grubhub and when delivery was 40 minutes past due I called the restaurant. The woman was very rude and blamed me. She claimed my phone number was wrong and the driver tried contacting me. She confirmed that my instructions were to leave the order and call the number listed. When I explained that I have a camera that would alert me to the arrival before the driver texted me she told me she was too busy and hung up on me. I wanted to support this local business but I will never order from this place again
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Absolutely disgusting and an incomplete order. Probably the only thing that was palatable would have been the soda, which wasn't delivered. Despite our offer of returning the entire order, they tried to bargain themselves our of the situation by offering me $10 off an inedible meal?!?!?! The sad part is, we used to order from these guys when our group worked overtime at Packer Marine Terminal quite frequently. Back in the day, it was always tip-top. What they served tonight and coupled with their response, was a war crime. BE WARNED! THIS IS NOT THE SAME NICK'S YOU'VE ORDERED FROM IN THE PAST!!!
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
The menu has wings, burgers, ribs, and chicken sandwiches but who was I to say no to their signature: filet mignon on a sandwich. In a city where bread is often piled with chopped steak or brisket and pulled or sliced pork - having a sandwich featuring thick slices of steak is a nice change. I got mine on the seeded Sarcone's bread with tomato, onions, and cheese (a bit over $10 after tax). The steak was simply seasoned, but not lacking flavor and cooked well so that it wasn't hard to manage inside the sandwich. If I were to return to Nick's, I would head straight back to this guy and not even bother trying anything else. Nick's is mostly a takeout spot and my sandwich was ready pretty quickly

Yelp
We had to drive up to Philadelphia from Dallas. FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS A STOP AT NICKS for 6 chicken sandwiches on Italian bread, provolone and hot sauce! Damn right we are eating them all the way home to Dallas!!!!
google avatar

Shenanigator X.

Yelp
This place was a bit of a let down for me. Boneless Chicken were flattened pieces of chicken over cooked and very bland. The sause was meh almost like it came out of the bottle. The salmon was again very bland. My brothers order the ribs as well(not pictured) and overcooked, very tough and once again BLAND w/ no seasoning at all. The hot dog. I'd expected it to be on a hot dog bun. Not cut it half and put on a roll. For the prices they charge, I expected alot more from here.

Rich T.

Yelp
My experience here was... OK. I had a rib and chicken combo. Both were smothered in bbq sauce, way more than was necessary and the sauce detracted from the enjoyment of the meat. The ribs were a bit overdone, also. The chicken was better but also overwhelmed with sauce. Fries were not bad but the cole slaw had an "off"'taste to it and I didn't finish it. If I come back, I'll definitely try the filet mignon sandwich. I suspect that's the best way to go here.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite take out places in South Philly. The signature sandwiches here are great, and come out with a very short wait time. Definitely go for the spinach over the standard toppings; you're here for meat, but picking spinach over lettuce makes a huge difference. It's a small location with very limited seating, and definitely not a sit-down spot. Probably not a date night place, unless you're really into hoagies. All the barbecue here is fantastic and affordable.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
I order the full wings, fries and a ceaser. The Caesar salad was the best out of the three. The dressing was very good! The wings and fries were okay. They were not seasoned at all and were extremely bland. The wings were very tiny. I gave this place the benefit of the doubt but I ended up have the same experience as the many other reviewers.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
I'm almost hesitant to review Nick's because I don't want them to blow up - but it's too good not to share with others, and I want these guys to shine. To start, all of their sandwiches are served on Sarcone's kaiser or long rolls. They're already on a roll......(bad joke, I know). You can choose from any number of meats on a sandwich, order some ribs, wings, fries, etc. I decided to branch out a bit when I saw they were serving a swordfish sandwich for a mere $6.75. The lady who took our order over the phone was incredibly nice, and when I inquired as to what "Nick's Special Sauce" was like, she confidently replied, "You'll love it." And that I did. The swordfish was surprisingly fresh and delicious, served on the kaiser roll. And the Special Sauce? It's the kind of sauce that complements any kind of Mediterranean seafood dish well - olive oil, lemon, garlic, and plenty of spices. My boyfriend ordered the country chicken sandwich (chicken, bacon, provolone, honey mustard) on a long roll, which was definitely enough for two meals. I think we'll definitely be ordering some of the ribs for future baseball or football parties. I don't know who you are Nick, but your food rules.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Every time I go to this place the food is better than I remembered. It's truly a hole in the wall with only two tables and a small counter so eating-in here isn't the most ideal but it's the best takeout barbecue I've had in this region. Their ribs are something special, they're so crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside. They offer some unique sandwiches like country chicken and A-1 filet mignon. You can get most of their sandwiches either on a Kaiser roll or the best Philly bread there is, a nice seeded roll from Sarcone's. I ordered take out yesterday but had my dog with me, so they kindly ran it out to the car for me. At this point I've tried most things on their menu and I've never been less than extremely satisfied.
google avatar

Gus S.

Yelp
This place has solid take out and delivery. Their charbroiled wings and ribs are very tasty. They have different sauces for the wings. Their garlic sauce is my favorite. The portions are pretty good. They have a big menu with a wide variety of selections, from fried shrimp to pulled pork. I've also had their sandwiches, including the country chicken (with bacon, provolone and honey mustard) and bbq rib sandwich, and they are a good size and delicious. The delivery is always quick too. This spot is definitely one of my favorites delivery spots in Philly!

Yelp
I was a major fan for this restaurant, near my house in South Philly, great prices, good food, fast delivery UNTIL the owner/manager or whomever manages this place screwed me over. I ordered through Grubhub on Saturday, 5/21/16 and my total was $30 something and I thought that I selected to pay cash on the app but instead it charged my debit card but when the delivery driver came I gave him the total amount for the order and a $5 tip. On Monday, 5/23/16 or Tuesday, 5/24/16, I was just reviewing my bank account and I noticed that I was charged for my order. I immediately called Grubhub and they said that they would dispute the charges and would get back to me. Another day or two later, I made a call to Grubhub and they informed me that the restaurant had disputed my claim stating that why would I wait three days to notice this? Pretty much Nick's Charcoal Pit did not believe me and thought I was pulling a scam on them. May I tell you, I have been ordering from this place for over 5 years. I called Nick's Charcoal Pit and left a voicemail requesting to be called back. I informed them that I paid twice for an order for $30 something. I told them that I don't check my account everyday, I'm not rich but a $30+ order will not clear out my checking out. I never got a call from anyone in that restaurant, I repeated my phone number twice on the voicemail so that's no excuse. As a business, you have a responsibility to your customers and to be fair. You profited from me one last time. You could have had continuous business from me because I really did love your food but that's all gone. Treat your customers better because they are the ones that keeps your door open. Thank you! Dave

Thien T.

Yelp
Was expecting better. Will give this another try next time. I ordered the spicy boneless chicken platter. For some reason I thought it was a sandwich? The chicken were thinly sliced with the spicy chicken sauce on it (spicy!). Chicken tasted dry and over cooked. Fries were good. Nice crispy and salted just right. Coleslaw was okay.
google avatar

Myrna M.

Yelp
I've tried everything on the menu here and a few of their items are solid: BBQ chicken, ribs and wings. But they do tend to overcook their meat to the point of it being on the dry side. Occasionally, way too dry. The items I'm never disappointed with: French fries and Greek salad.
google avatar

Dawn R.

Yelp
Quick pick up as usual, delicious filet mignon sandwich and salad!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Rainy Saturday decided to get delivery. Considering the weather, the deliver was really fast. I got a rack of ribs which were pretty good, no complaints on the sauce either. French fries came with platter and were very good as well. The girl got a chicken caesar salad. She didn't have any really complains about it. A little of the pricy side for a salad, something like $12-13. All things considered really solid place.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
My husband loves the country chicken sandwich and I love their always fresh and delicious coleslaw! I dont know what it is but the fries and the coleslaw go so good together! My tuna steak is always perfect!
google avatar

Joele W.

Yelp
I ordered from here tonight, I had the steak platter it was very good cooked perfectly my daughter got the filet mignon platter that was also good and my other daughter got the flounder platter no complaints from her. They delivered in a sufficient manner. I would recommend it highly. I also got the rib and chicken platter to take to work tomorrow and the portions are huge which is good being that I'm on a 16hr shift. Thanks for the great food.

Monty A.

Yelp
I need to start off by saying that my food had zero seasoning. I wish I was lying. I didn't even taste salt on my chicken. I order the chicken wings platter with the garlic hot sauce. I thought the sauce would be something garlicky and flavorful. It was that cheap red hot sauce that everybody has a bottle of because it's not even hot, like franks red hot sauce. I am very disappointed. I gave 2 stars because I didn't have to wait long for my order and at least the meat was fully cooked. Don't even get me started on the coleslaw. The best thing was the fries and even those had no salt. I am definitely never going back.

David B.

Yelp
This review is based on one pandemic Grubhub delivery and I only ordered chicken, boneless and wings. Presentation and packing were satisfactory but mediocre. the food itself was pretty mediocre. If I had ordered pork or beef would my meal have been better? I can't say. Mozzarella sticks were poorly packed as an afterthought and nondescript (in fairness I haven't found a place that makes these special). Maybe I ordered the wrong things or caught them in an off-epidemic?

JP J.

Yelp
No actual BBQ, charcoal, or pit. Just a Burger King style "flame broiled grill". Can do better at home.
google avatar

Candy D.

Yelp
Ordered from here twice, have had ribs, burgers chicken and everything has been really well cooked and so flavorful. Fast delivery, never any issue with my order, or placing my order, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you are getting. Really delicious, definitely recommend if you enjoy ribs or a really flavorful cooked outdoors tasting burger. So good.
google avatar

Wayne S.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Nick's when I was still living in True South Philly (below Tasker) . I was riding my bike up 13th one day and I smelled the most wonderful aroma of chicken on the grill. My nose brought me to Nick's steps and I pretty much pressed my face on the glass before I instantly decided to go inside. I ordered some bbq wings just to try them out along with a side of fries. I anxiously went back to my apartment and opened the bag and whoa momma did it still smell wonderful. Each bite of the chicken was just filled with flavor and the fries were just right. Nick's is great for just a little extra for lunch and I highly recommend it. However, opt to pick up your food rather than have it delivered, as it seems to take forever and you risk getting a cold meal instead of the masterpiece it should be.
google avatar

Brad P.

Yelp
Nick's Charcoal Pit is OK. There is nothing particularly overwhelming or underwhelming about this establishment...except for the hot wings(underwhelming). Now it is relevant to say I've only tried the ribs and the hot wings. Many of these reviews focus on their sandwiches and perhaps I should have gone with one of them. Anyhow, the wings were really small with a very OK sauce and they make you pay 50 cents for your own bleu cheese and don't come with any carrots or celery and that's that. If you've had Moriarty's hot wings and still think that these are the best wings in Philadelphia then I just don't know what to do. The ribs are OK. Their sauce is good, but it doesn't help Nick's differentiate itself from other rib places in the city. There's nothing particularly unique or creative about it. They don't have a ton of meat on them but they have enough to satisfy your craving for ribs if you are in the area. Based on the high reviews for the sandwiches, I will return to try them the next time I am in the area.

Yelp
First, I'll say that I want to give this place a second chance. But I'm very hesitant. Last night was the first time that my husband and I ordered from Nick's, but we've always thought the prices were pretty reasonable and how bad could it really be? I wish I read comments on yelp first (rather than just judging by how many stars it had). I ordered the boneless rib sandwich, expecting from a "BBQ Pit" to get rib meat right off the bone in a sandwich. I was so excited for rib meat, because I was craving it last night -- I didn't get ribs because we are on a tight budget. Unfortunately, when we got home and I unwrapped my sandwich, I was extremely disappointed to find four processed-meat McRib patties. This is good if you're hungry and don't care about eating processed meats because it is a good price... But I would expect to get real whole meat from a place that sells itself as a BBQ pit. It casts a shadow over my impression of the rest of the menu, despite reviews. The meat sat like a rock in my stomach, and I regretted eating just over half -- I gave the rest to my husband because I was so sad I was eating it. He got a chicken sandwich for himself and seemed to enjoy it (it was a whole piece of chicken breast). I didn't get a chance to taste it for myself. I really wish we went to Dave's BBQ instead, over on Columbus, even if it is more expensive. We also tossed around splitting something from Percy Street BBQ on South Street. I will say that the broccoli bites that we also got were pretty good, nice and cheesy.

Yelp
Nick's Charcoal Pit is saved in my phone. This place is a great find. Im in love. I wish I lived closer to this place. I know now to just keep that menu in my car and phone ahead my order since it's a small, popular place and they grill everything to order. Oh, but it's worth the wait. Nick's Special filet mignon sandwich with cheese and spinach is divine and probably feeds two adults if they are not two pig adults like me. The grilled chicken with bacon and smoky cheddar is delicious. I'll get back to you after Ive been there a few more times and reminisce about all the other food-gasms I have. My only suggestion here is maybe have that menu as a bigger image on yelp. SO GOOD.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
I was really shocked how incredible the barbecue is here. Well worth the price! Incredible variety to get excited over. Every delivery I get gets better and better with the more of their menu that I try.

Yelp
Guess what, y'all? I lost like 5 or 6 pounds recently. I feel thinner, I can fit into more pants...it's awesome. Except for one tiny thing - I have no food in my house and decided to order lunch from this place. Whoops, there goes my weight loss. Nick's rules, hands-down. I love really good BBQ and although I've yet to try their platters everything that I've tasted was awesome. I'm not the biggest cheesesteak fan but I seriously order the Nick's special sandwich (filet, sauteed spinach, provolone on a Sarcone's roll) every single time because it's divine. In case you couldn't gather from the name, everything they cook is char-broiled (except for like fries, etc...you can't really grill those) so it feels a lot healthier than a typical cheesesteak. The filet is really tender, the spinach is seasoned perfectly, and the cheese isn't overwhelmingly sharp. It's just super good. Huge, and I did eat almost all of it (oops). The wings get a lot of flack but you know what? They're grilled. They aren't deep fried pieces of artery-clogging heaven. Don't compare them to deep fried wings because you can't. I've never had a grilled wing before but for what they are, they are good and the wings retain a lot of flavor. If you go in expecting your typical wing then yeah, you probably won't like them. But if you're ready to try them prepared a new way then there is a chance Nick's Charcoal Pit may make a convert out of you. Awesome onion rings, too. I usually get delivery so I can't comment on the decor but I know they have a large delivery radius, including Bella Vista. Since things are grilled and not fried it takes slightly longer than some places but it is well worth the wait.

Yelp
I tried Nick's Charcoal Pit today after a few positive recommendations The filet sandwich was off the hook. Hunks of filet mignon, sautéed spinach and garlicky butter with provolone on a sarcone's roll. The place is tiny so it's not a place you want to sit down and eat. You could if you wanted to but it seems strictly take out to me. Anyway, it was great. The only criticism I would have is that it needed a little salt and pepper. Even a bit of mayo with a little horseradish would be good, too. Service is very nice and swift. They said they deliver as far as South Street so that means I'm SOL. Probably a blessing in disguise.

Yelp
I will never have any other establishments' whiz wit again!!! Nick's style of a Philly classic is even better than the original with their delicious filet mignon. I'm sorry I didn't upload a pic, I was too busy eating every bite.

Yelp
In my opinion Nicks is the best place in the city of Philadelphia for bbq, from their ribs to their filet mignon sandwhich. Everything is always fresh and cooked to perfection. My personal favorite is the fire spice chicken sandwich which is grilled chicken on a long italian seeded roll with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and fire spices topped off with their house made jerk sauce which is one of the best jerk sauces I have ever had. Inside its a very clean place and The staff is super friendly. May not look like a gem from the outside but the food says otherwise. If you are ever looking for a great place to grab a sandwich or some charcol bbq chicken or ribs, nicks is the place to go. I highly recommend everyone trys this place out!

Yelp
What I had hoped from moving back to South Philly was that I would be eating out less and creating more meals at home. While that HAS happened, I also noticed that I was ordering take out more often. Out of guilt, I try not to seek out takeout joints, instead relying on the power of advertising. As if by miracle, a menu for Nick's appeared on my mailbox. Fast forward to 3 orders later and I have crowned Nick's my favorite place to order a sandwich. My first order was a boneless rib sandwich which was tasty, but not very warm and I prefer my sauce slopped on so I was disappointed when I saw BBQ sauce was minimal. The second order I tried their special (filet mignon, spinach, provolone on roll, $8.45 iirc) and onion rings for the first time. It was SO good I ordered it the next time. I hope the next order I will try their other sandwiches. The people who took my order were very clear and nice. They deliver within an hour.
