Authentic Greek fare with famous gyros and Greek lasagna
"Most people have passed by Nick's, misinterpreting its character and depth as just another building in Grant Park. They couldn't be more mistaken. Nick's Food To Go is a family-run restaurant that's been around for more than 20 years. They serve authentic, fresh and beautiful Greek food and tzatziki sauce you'll want to bathe in. You order outside and eat on the park tables with a wonderful view of their garden and parking lot. Don't just drive by again. Stop and treat yourself to the gyro you deserve." - Matchstic
"Ben Skolnick (BoccaLupo) and Jared Warwick’s (Octopus Bar) rhyming pop-up started off as a joke, but their most recent project, the Blue Blood series, is more than enough proof that their collaboration has serious merit. Part supper club and part tasting menu, each Blue Blood course comes paired with a drink — think Parmesan frico, cheese soup, and broccolini paired with a mezcal pepper cocktail that provides an entirely different type of smokiness; arrabbiata pasta accompanied with fluffy lobster and dusted with a fine breadcrumb served with Riesling; romanesco and slightly gritty foie gras mousse served with Pinot Gris for a union of crucifer, richness and minerality. "Ben Skolnick (BoccaLupo) and Jared Warwick’s (Octopus Bar) pop-up supper club series pushes boundaries with both its multi-course food and drink pairings. Examples include Parmesan with mezcal, arrabbiata sauce with lobster and Riesling, and romanesco with foie gras mousse. If you get full halfway through, just let someone know — they’ve got plenty of containers on hand to take stuff home, and the courses so more than hold up the next day. The grapefruit sorbet, paired with warm brie and citrus, is a statement-making closer. Keep up with Wick and Nick’s, and all future events, on Instagram. $125 per person. Reservations required." - Beth McKibben, Sarra Sedghi
"Tucked on the corner of MLK and Hill Street near Oakland Cemetery, this family-owned-and-operated, shoebox-of-a-Greek counter-service joint opened in 1994 and built a loyal following among locals and people working near the Gold Dome for its gyros and Nick’s famous Greek lasagna. Nick Poulos and his wife Eleni started the spot; Poulos retired ten years ago and his wife and daughter now run the place with a small, tight-knit staff. The restaurant shifted during the pandemic from indoor counter service to a takeout window in the parking lot, and a recent parking lot renovation tied to construction of a mid-rise next door prompted a temporary July closure; a death in the family of an employee delayed the reopening and, per an Instagram post and a representative, “We are hoping to reopen in September.” Over the years the family and regulars have weathered repeated redevelopment threats—the building’s 2017 sale and another mid-rise announced four years later—but so far the tiny brick restaurant appears to have avoided redevelopment." - Beth McKibben
"Located on the corner of MLK and Hill Street on the edge of Grant Park, Greek sandwich shop Nick’s Food to Go features a takeout window on the side of the building in the parking lot. The 25-year old restaurant continues to serve some of the city’s best gyros, along with its famous “Greek lasagna.”" - Beth McKibben
