Celebrated an early Valentine's dinner here on Saturday (2/3) . . . my honey's FAVORITE meal ever is Cacio e Pepe so when we were researching places for dinner and we saw that they create it table-side, we knew this was the place we had to check out. We had reservations and were seated promptly at a very small and quite low table - which made it a little difficult to feel comfortable, but as long as the service/food are excellent, certainly something one can tolerate. We were also sat right next to the stairs where there was a loud party happening in the downstairs - BOOMING loud music, so be prepared that this isn't a calm/quiet dining experience. Thankfully that party left about 20min later and we could finally carry on a conversation . . . Also, it seems that the only bathroom is downstairs, just an FYI for anyone who has issues with stairs.
Starting note: When we were first seated, I couldn't take my jacket off fast enough. It was swelteringly hot - and I typically LOVE to be warm, so for me to comment on this meant it was H-O-T. I looked at the split units they have, it said 75 degrees and in a restaurant filled with people like sardines in a can. I had to start fanning myself - and I think someone noticed because it started to cool off a little and I saw that the temp had been lowered by someone to 63 . . . so props to them for noticing and taking action because it was uncomfortable for sure.
Ok, so here's the thing: For the prices that are being charged, and the ambiance I think they're trying to go for, I do think they are missing the mark on some things. Our server was friendly, but let dirty dishes sit on our table for a considerable length of time considering he was mostly standing back against the wall watching the restaurant (I assume watching his tables for any needs of assistance). And when the table is quite small to begin with, when you have plates building up that could be whisked away, it effects the feel of your dining experience.
The complimentary bread was tasty enough, with oil/balsamic for dipping and we were starving so we were grateful to have that. Once we were ready to order, we ordered the Burrata/Prosciutto appetizer, then the table-side Cacio e Pepper for him and the Lobster ravioli for me:
The Burrata/Prosciutto app had wonderful potential, but was lacking a bread or crostini component. It had one ball of Burrata, a few pieces of ruffled Prosciutto, and confit tomatoes - drizzled with olive oil, Balsamic reduction, and some pesto. It was really yummy - but seemed that with all of the loose/liquid aspects of it (including the creamy inside of the Burrata) it seemed strange to have nothing to sop up all of that deliciousness with. Additionally, a bread/crostini component would also make it easier to eat because all of that liquid gold was impossible to fork up. Lastly, and we can't quite figure this one out, the confit grape tomatoes - they tasted. . . fizzy. They had a strange fizzy snap to them, almost as if they had slightly fermented?? We couldn't figure it out but it was strange and off-putting.
The table-side Cacio e Pepe isn't made completely table-side, it should be noted. The server uses a spoon to scrape up some fresh parm from the wheel, then adds the pasta (that was already done up in the kitchen as Cacio e Pepe, sauce and everything) into the wheel and mixes it around more. It's twirled onto your plate with some additional pepper, olive oil, and cheese on top. So it's more like it's dressed table-side. That being said, my boyfriend said it's the best Cacio e Pepe he's had since he was in Italy. So that's a big kudos for them.
My lobster ravioli dish was just ok. It was lobster ravioli in a slightly spicy sauce that was just average at best. I ate it, but wouldn't say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was just meh.
Over all, a decent enough place - but with some missed potential. The Devil's in the details, ya know? Give them a try if you want to enjoy really good Cacio e Pepe.
Oh, one last thing . . . someone was experiencing a birthday (right behind us actually) and apparently when that happens, they suddenly BLAST a party song incredibly loud. It was so loud that I jumped out of my seat a little. They also put a little strobe light thingy on the birthday person's table for a few minutes . . . that was really obnoxious, to be honest. Plus, problematic potentially if anyone dining there has epilepsy and could be triggered by the flashing strobe lights. I'm all for enjoying a fun occasion, but the way they choose to celebrate birthday's here just doesn't seem to fit the rest of what's going on. Or who knows, maybe it does.
