Google
Awesome market for Japanese and Asian goodies. The absolute best place if you want to stop for berto boxes, sushi, sashimi, and so much more. I loved stopping by here and felt welcomed and invited. This place is definitely where the locals go, I saw a ton of people in Japan town eating from their market and eventually walked to find it!

Google
The sushi is WAY better than Whole Foods / Safeway (unsurprisingly). Fish and rice both have fresher taste and texture, especially at lunch time. Lots of people pick up lunch here but it doesn’t get too crowded.

Google
Great Japanese market! They have everything niche like real hon-mirin and high end cooking sake. They have fresh produce and meats too. Will definitely be back.

We love this place and visit almost every time we come to san francisco . It's one of the few places we can find really good tenyo takeda mushrooms. They have everything to make sushi and already prepared meals. Lotsa Japanese products that my wife loves. I go for the chips and sodas. Sweet stuff can't normally be found here in the States. Love the cheetos with guilty cheese. A delicious snack. It can usually be packed during the day, but service is fast. Not expensive, either. So if looking for a little bit of everything it's a great market.

Google
Nijiya is my absolute favorite Japanese supermarket! The produce is always fresh, the store is spotless, and there’s such a quiet joy in discovering new products from Japan. I love coming here for both my everyday Japanese groceries and skincare must-haves. The ready-to-eat food is also delicious—Whether you’re stocking up or just exploring, Nijiya is a beautiful experience every time.

Google
Omg we wished we found out this place earlier, excellent bento 🍱 with affordable price. The only one let us down is the pork bowl, the pork was extremely dry but the rest was good. Highly recommended the sashimi seasonal special, delicious scallops and a lots of crab. Will definitely come back to try more bento and hopefully the pork Katsu will get improved.

Google
The store appear small when you first enter but it's actually a good size grocery store. They have a large selection of ready-made foods. They also have a pretty decent selection of sashimis. The prices are reasonable, especially for being located in SF. The validate parking but it's just discounted and not completely free. They are open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. the cashiers are always super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Nijiya Market, located across from the Japantown Center, is a compact yet well-stocked Japanese grocery store offering a wide variety of items, including frozen foods, pre-packaged ready-to-eat meals, fresh groceries, and unique snacks. One of the highlights is their affordable sushi, making it a great spot for a quick and budget-friendly meal. Though the store is relatively small and somewhat cramped, they efficiently utilize the space to pack in a diverse selection of products, much like a traditional Asian market. I didn't interact much with the staff beyond the cashier, but the checkout process was quick and seamless, despite the number of people shopping. During my visit, I picked up a fun "education candy" sushi-making kit for just $5, which was a great find. Overall, the prices here are reasonable, and it's a solid spot for Japanese groceries and convenient meals.

Yelp
Nijiya Market is an absolute gem in Japantown, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone looking for authentic Japanese groceries, snacks, and specialty items. My favorite go-to snack here is their baked rice cheese puffs because they areperfectly soft, crunchy, and cheesy (hard to explain hehe), they always hit the spot. The prices are fair for the area, especially given the quality and variety, and it's so convenient to be able to find everything I need here without having to make the trek to HMart. One of the best things about this location is its proximity to all the cool shops in Japantown. It's a great place to stop after visiting some of the nearby stores, and the added bonus of having a very convenient parking garage right next door makes the shopping experience that much easier. I never have to worry about finding parking, which is a huge plus in the city! Security is very nice! I love the lady working there at the front because she is attentive and has a nice sweet smile, making the entrance very welcoming even though being so crowded. Another highlight is their amazing selection of Japanese-specific alcohol. I love checking out their imported sakes and draft beers. There is always something new and exciting to try. My personal favorite is Asahi beer for its crisp, clean taste without any odd aftertastes. Whether you're a sake enthusiast or just want a refreshing beer, Nijiya has you covered. Their sales rotate frequently, which makes it easy to find great deals, and as a frugal shopper, I always feel like I'm getting good value for my money. Shopping here is like a curated experience, and I enjoy finding new products and trying different things. The prepared foods are another reason I keep coming back. Whether I'm in the mood for fresh sushi, a bento box, or a quick snack, everything is always made with care and tastes delicious. The produce and meats are also top-notch in terms of freshness and quality, which I really appreciate. Overall, Nijiya Market is a standout location in Japantown. Between its convenient location, great parking, rotating sales, and high-quality products, it's easily my favorite place to shop for Japanese goods. Highly recommend for anyone in the area!

Yelp
The food selection here is very good. There are a lot of hard to find foods and things here. It is quite amazing. The service is ok. It could get busy here specially neat the bent boxes are. The fresh fish here is just too good.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
They have it all! I love their ready-made food, especially when I time it right and it's all fresh. Delicious and fun way to try new things out.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while bc I remember the food not being that fresh. Went back recently and boy was I surprised. I went kinda late in the day with a sushi craving and got all the rolls, hamachi, tuna, bimbim bop bowl, the age mochi...wow was I impressed! No wonder there so many people here. If you don't have time to go out for sushi this place is awesome. Fairly priced and popular. So try to get there early. Their fish is so fresh and I also tried their raw scallop and it so fresh you could taste its sweetness. Don't sleep on Nijiya. So good!

Yelp
This Japanese supermarket in Japantown is a gem! They have an amazing selection of authentic Japanese snacks, top-quality meat and seafood, making it a go-to for anyone craving the best ingredients. The ready-to-eat section is a standout, with beautifully prepared chirashi, sashimi, sushi rolls, nigiri, and bento boxes--all fresh and delicious. You'll also find a fantastic variety of imported produce and unique bottled beverages that add to the authentic experience. With such a diverse selection, this store has everything you need for a Japanese-inspired meal or snack. Definitely stop in!

Yelp
Nijya Market in Japantown boasts a wide selection of refrigerated premade meals - bento, sushi, katsu, and more at reasonable prices. The sushi is high quality, and if you prefer to make your own, you'll find premium sashimi grade cuts in the back of the store. On a weekend, they had an excellent variety, and I was pleasantly surprised to see fresh scallop (on sale!). Other goodies that caught my eye were single serve ice cream I haven't seen outside of Japan, fresh wasabi, a variety of mochi, fish cake soup kits, Japanese pickles, and a colorfully enticing snack aisle. The store itself can feel a bit cramped at times, but it's clean and well-organized. There's plenty of paid and street parking around the store. I wish their produce section and Japanese toothpaste selection were a tad more affordable and extensive, but for excellent premade meals and some fun finds, Nijya does it right!

Yelp
If you love Japanese treats and fresh affordable fish, come to this grocery in japantown. You won't regret it. They have everything that you need for sukiyaki, sushi, ramen and just all around fresh and great place for Japanese food grocery :)

Yelp
Standing strong on the corner amongst touristy shopping malls and restaurants, Nijiya Market provides a livable and residential feeling to it's block in San Francisco's Japantown. Only a 15 minute walk from my current home, it's a great place for me to quickly run in and grab whatever I need - nostalgic snacks, niche cooking ingredients, Japanese beers and sakes, foreign household products, and Asian beauty items. The produce tends to be pretty expensive - but the best deal is the daily-made bento boxes that range from raw fish sushi to katsu pork bowls. Honestly these bento boxes are not the tastiest food in the area, but they are a great cheap take-out dinner if you come within an hour from closing time when the leftovers are 20% off. They offer chopsticks as well as fresh packets of ginger and wasabi at the counter with your purchase. The store is very cramped with lots of skinny aisles, very reminiscent of other traditional independent Asian stores in & outside of the city. It can be INSANELY CROWDED around lunch and dinner time, especially on weekends, creating a really miserable shopping experience for when I just want to quickly run errands. I usually walk or take the bus here and avoid driving as parking is hard to come by. There is a paid parking lot directly next to the store as well as some paid street parking on the block. If driving, it's helpful to park closer to the residential areas and just walk but do be careful about car break-ins as there is a lot of foot traffic & tourists around the area. On the exit out toward the parking lot, there are lots of flyers promoting local cultural events and organizations. Definitely recommend always checking out what's happening even if you don't live in the area!

Yelp
The items in the fridge near the entrance are fresh & delicious. Quality commiserates with the price. Enjoyed the negi hamachi rolls, inari & maki sushi. Queue can be long during events (Cherry Blossom, etc).

Yelp
When I visited Japan town with my best friend, we stopped by Nijiya Market to grab food on the go and look around. This market has a wide selection of takeout foods ranging from sushis/nigiris to rice plates and pastas! I got a rice plate which included fried fish over rice, a potato coquette, a piece of meat (not sure of what it was), and some veggies. This plate was under $10 and 100% worth it. I'm not sure if the meal was meant to be microwaved, but I ate it cold and it was still tasty. I also found natto at this market which is a popular japanese snack/breakfast consisting of fermented soybeans. To me, natto tastes a little similar to coffee and beans (it's difficult to explain). The flavor takes some getting used to because I initially didn't like it, but now I'm suddenly wishing I bought more!

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon! This is a great market to visit if you're around Japantown! They offer a large selection of sushi, which is fresh and high quality. They usually run out by the end of the day on Saturdays, so make sure to come a bit earlier! I got a Salmon Avocado Roll + Salmon Nigiri, which was good quality and delicious. Will definitely be back again soon!
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Nijiya Market has -20% off prepared food towards the end of the day. I like getting their yakisoba for $7.50. This time around, there were no more onigiri (Japanese rice balls) left. Excellent shrimp chips selection as well as other things like packaged ramen and alcohol. They don't have the Strong Zero 9% alcoholic drinks that I like though. I haven't been able to find that here in America.

Yelp
My home sweet home away from home. I feel like we are at Nijiya daily for their fresh sushi options and groceries. I am just so happy that they are so close to us. We are grateful that the prices have stayed so reasonable over the years. We tell all of our friends and family about this market. You must go on the early side to catch all the delicious fresh fish before they sell out and they do sell out, especially on the weekends. Go there, tell your brother, sister, auntie, uncle, amma, and agong to go there whenever they want some yummy food! I like that they stopped giving you hoards of sauces, ginger, and wasabi. I appreciate the staff being supremely friendly, when asking if we need condiments. Bring your shopping bags too!
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Always super excited to go to the store, there a big variety of Japanese food options, my favorite part is their sushi, quality is really decent and the price is acceptable.

Yelp
Love this market. It's such an authentic Asian market and has everything you need! We grabbed some bento boxes and they were all great -- everything $5-$15. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The store is a small/medium size and is pretty crowded most of the time. Everything in the store is usually really organized and clean. I always stop here when going to Japantown!
google avatar

Yelp
A full grocer in Japantown that carries a HUGE array of Japanese goods and imports. You can get lost in this big shop with amazing stuff crammed everywhere. There isn't many staff available to help though, so expect to spend some time to find help. But staff are knowledgeable and usually able to point you in the right direction. Price can be high - especially (and understandably) for the imported goods. But this is a great place to find all your Japanese cooking needs! Love their selection of ready-to-eat food and snack options as well.
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
The selection is excellent for a store its size. I think you could find almost anything you need for Japanese cooking or eating. Prices are high across the board and for staples you can do better at other international markets, but for convenience and location it's understandable. The grab and go options are delicious, and a great idea of you want to picnic at nearby Lafayette Park. I was at Nijaya most recently on a busy Saturday and the cashiers were both polite and incredibly efficient; the service really can't be beat. We ended up perching our the kids on the ledge outside and having a snack right there on Post St!

郑

Yelp
My experience here was very disappointing. A female cashier appeared to treat me unfairly, possibly due to racial bias, as she constantly wore a stern expression. When I asked her questions, she seemed unwilling to engage with me. While the food is good, that cashier's attitude was far from friendly. If you decide to visit, be mindful--it might ruin your mood for the day.

Yelp
The Japanese market in the city that's the new go to just so we can cook at home meals... we miss Japan more than you know! Nijiya Market has tons of Japanese groceries from snacks, seasonings, meats, and to skin care things. (A few items I had bought in Tokyo for skin care are sold here!! And I swear by them. HOLY GRAILS) This spot also has hot foods available but I haven't tried it yet since I mostly come for groceries. This market is located in Japantown so you know how parking goes... Good luck for street parking or there is optional parking garage. A bit pricey since it is SF and it is Japantown but worth with their selection of things!
google avatar

Gloria H.

Yelp
I visited Nijiya last summer to get ingredients for sushi at my friend's house -- photos are of our spread at home! Overall they had a really great selection of sashimi-grade fish and I thought the prices were reasonable given the quality. I would definitely recommend the salmon, fatty tuna, and salmon eggs. Those were all very fresh, tender, and delicious. The sockeye salmon eggs were good but a bit too salty. The squid was quite gooey -- we got one that was cut into noodles. Maybe the ones that's cut into flat pieces with some ribbing would taste better. The scallop was pretty good but not my favorite. The seaweed salad was pretty decent as well. If Nijiya was in my area I would definitely be delighted to get sushi ingredients there!

Yelp
Dear Nijiya market, Get yourselves updated on what is actual law about alcoholic purchases from grocery stores and carding laws. In California, only the person purchasing alcohol in a grocery store is required by law to show an ID. Since consumption doesn't happen on premises, as long as a person is carded, then liability ends at your duty to card. I repeat, there is no specific law requiring grocery stores to card all individuals in a group, including minors, when selling alcohol to an adult 21 years or older. By your logic, if I came with a hypothetical 17 year old son, who is not allowed to drink and wouldn't drink because that's the law, I cannot legally purchase any alcoholic beverages from your establishment. You embarrassed me with your ridiculous policy; I provided a valid ID and form of payment and was ready to spend $200 in your store until you chose to question my friend. Given the products we were purchasing it was obvious we were not going to consume any alcohol anywhere in public, and as a 40 year old to have my friend provide ID despite them not purchasing alcohol is ridiculous just because we went in the store together. I will permanently be taking my business elsewhere until you stop such asinine actions and properly update yourselves on what California law actually says.
google avatar

Margie L.

Yelp
I usually just buy some Japanese snacks here. The pre made food looks ok. Fun to see all the different items they carry and recently looks like there are some sales on chocolates and stuff for the holidays.
google avatar

Mimi E.

Yelp
This place has one of the BEST take out sushi- restaurant quality fish but a grocery take out price! They were almost all out of take out items when we arrived Sunday around 5pm. We got poke bowl and sushi combo (surprisingly the poke was better because the rice at bottom of sushi had already begun to get hard. Service is friendly. Place is clean but so crowded it was hard to walk.
google avatar

Rose T.

Yelp
I always love stopping by this market whenever I'm in Japantown! They have lots of products I don't see elsewhere and it doesn't feel overpriced.
google avatar

Soroosh P.

Yelp
Extensive selection. In terms of atmosphere this place is your authentic Japan town grocery store. Prices are a little on the higher end, but the fresh food and good quality make up for it. The selection is deceivingly large as the storefront seems small but goes in deep.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been shopping at this Nijiya Market here in SF Japantown for well over thirty years , going way back to the 1980s when it was still called Maruwa Market. This has been my to go place for all the Japanese food and household products from Japan for myself and my family. The promotions they have had there have been very memorable including when they had cigarette girls peddling and promoting Mild Seven cigarettes. As of late however, I'm not very fond of some of the new cashiers they have hired there. Particularly this young Latino boy who speaks to the Asian patrons there in a very disrespectful tone. Mind you, it is a very busy market with long lines there especially on the weekends, but nonetheless I don't like the way he call us out with a very condescending "Next!" like we are cattle. I will be finding out this young punk's name soon and bring this to the management's attention.

Yelp
If you are looking for a make your own sushi night, look no further! This market has all the sashimi and ingredients you need. They also have an extensive collection of ramens that I'm a huge fan of, as well as various ice creams, treats, snacks, sauces, etc. The selection is huge, and really allows you to try things delicious things that aren't found at your local Trader Joe's. Highly recommend shopping here!

Jen B.

Yelp
Best rice cakes/crackers (low sodium, crunchy) in the U.S. are here. Look no further.

Yelp
I love love love this market. Fresh sashimi, seafood, meat, Japanese treats, and ramen selections. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Nijiya Market is my go to Japanese market in the city, especially for sushi grade products. In fact, that was the mission of this grocery haul. When I arrived, I went straight to the back where all the sushi grade fish is located. I love that. They have a diverse selection with options, like salmon, tuna, yellowtail, Octopus, squid, Uni, sardines, mackerel, unagi, and much more. If you're doing a sushi night like I was, you can obviously also find nori sheets, short grain sushi rice, rice vinegar, and any other necessary essentials. I've been going to this market for over seven years and every time I've bought raw sushi fish, I've never ever had any issues. it always looks and tastes good quality and I'm always excited when I'm in the area and have a chance to swing by for my Japanese grocery store needs.
google avatar

P P.

Yelp
They need to train their employees on how to BAG groceries. Ignorant young woman who bagged my groceries today did a crappy job & created a mess in my bag (which I PAID for and ended up NOT being a reusable bag) The prepared food items were set on top & leaked all over my groceries. What a mess! It's her job to make sure groceries packed correctly. Basic grocery store training. Which I guess is missing here. The one star that I'm required to give is for the great selection of items to be found here. But the service is crap!!
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
This place was super crowded during the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, but was the lowest wait time option for food...and even then still it took about 40 minutes to get inside and wait heat up my food. My friend and I came here to snag some bento boxes (yakisoba and beef bowl) and some drinks, which made for a really affordable, easy lunch since we didn't want to stand in line and waste time waiting for the other food vendors. The food was average and didn't wow me. This place has a nice selection of drink and snack options that I would have perused if I hadn't felt so cramped in there.
google avatar

Regina C.

Yelp
First time ever going to a Japanese market! Loved the selection of goodies. Came here specifically to get some fish cakes for ramen night and loved how they also had the naruto fish cake. I also came and got myself grape soda! Will be going again to try their different flavors :)
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Awesome grocery store with many assorted foods and goodies! Brought back memories of our Tokyo trip and more aware of Japanese food and this market is remarkable. Should we need/crave for Japanese products this store is worth the drive to SF.
google avatar

Thien H.

Yelp
This Japanese market has some hit and misses. I don't like the sashimi. I've eaten it at least twice because friends wanted to try it. It's 3 stars for me. The sashimi tastes water logged and is stringy half the time. The veggie area is sometimes okay, but please look carefully as I've seen quite a few vegetables with mold. They like to seal a lot of vegetables in wasteful foam trays and plastic wrap, which I think is causing a lot of the stuff to grow mold faster. I honestly don't know why they sell "fresh" wasabi, most of the time it's moldy. I bought some short grain rice I really like from here. They were having a sale on cooking oil and it was excellent. Know your prices because some stuff is reasonably priced and sometimes it's way higher than you would pay at markets on Clement or Irving. I like that it's kind of a small market, but you can find most everything you need to cook a Japanese meal and maybe 50% of the stuff you need for other Asian meals.
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
I shop here a lot for years to buy groceries and get food. Just I didn't like one of the cashier. (Probably new worker) dude got so mad at me because I didn't "speak loudly" which got him to yelled at me. When asking for chopsticks and napkins. I haven't had that problem with other cashiers before. Having that nasty attitude will make customers upset.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
5/5 Dec 2023 A must when in Japantown! When in Japantown, I love stopping by Nijiya Market. I usually get their salmon avocado roll, unagi nigiri, chirashi bowl, and onigiri! Prices are reasonable: salmon avo roll is $8.99 unagi nigiri (5 pieces) is $10.99 salmon onigiri is $2.79. They even have a microwave for use if you buy something that needs to be reheated such as katsu! There's a parking garage and plenty of street parking. I'll continue coming back to Nijiya Market to satisfy my cravings.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
Ever wanted to try making sushi at home? You have found just the place! All you need is some ingredients from Nijiya (sushi grade fish, wasabi, soy sauce, nori, short grain rice, rice vinegar) and you are ready to rumble! The market is easy to navigate and we were able to have our own all you can eat sushi for under $20 a person. Wowie!
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
Must-try: their premade dishes like sushi, bentos, etc are awesome and a fair price Why visit? You can find most Asian ingredients you might be looking for, with a larger selection than the nearby Korean Woori market! Protip: Show up early to enjoy the hot food
google avatar

SF A.

Yelp
I love this place! The selection of boxed lunches cannot be beat! This store has been a staple for years and I will continue to patron this business. It's very clean, well-stocked shelves and their sushi boxes are almost always sold-out during the weekend. The cashiers are very efficient and provide good customer service. Don't miss out on the seafood choices at the back of the store! The only downside is street parking can be a challenge.
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
Security racially profiles people who walk into the store. I walked in different directions with my partner to see if we were being followed and it confirmed my suspicions because at every turn they would show up to spy on us when we were clearly using the store basket and none of us had a large purse or bag. They do this every time to people who aren't of lighter complexion.

Yelp
Nijiya is definitely one of my favorite Japanese grocery stores in the city. How lucky are we to have a place that sells fresh sushi bowls and many Japanese goodies and snacks? I've always come here since I was a kid, but ever since I've gotten into asian cooking, I always come here probably once a week just to pick up some Japanese ingredients. I recommend coming here earlier if you want first dibs to snag some of their sushi! It's better if you come in the morning because they will have their shelves stocked up with all their food and trust me, they have a lot to offer! It's so convenient if you want a quick bite for lunch or dinner and the bowls are quite affordable. I always love getting their salmon sushi/bowls/chirashi but everything else is delicious too. They also have tuna, mackerel, futomaki, unagi, gyudon, and more. You name it. It can get crowded during lunch/after work hours so the lines might get long, but it's really not too bad. There was a month in February where they actually brought strawberries to the market internationally from Japan! In my photos I have the amaou and awakyuki strawberries. And my god were they so good! Honestly, it's so expensive but when am I ever going to experience trying these fruits any time soon? The Awayuki (Pink) were my favorite! It's soooo soft and the fruit itself is just so sweet and light. It does not taste like your ordinary strawberry at all and it was very delightful. And the amaou strawberry has a softer smoother texture in comparison to our strawberries in the US. This makes me so eager to go to Japan in the future!

Yelp
This little market is one of my fave places to visit in Japantown!! You can pick yourself up some fresh onigiri or sushi and be sure to pick up some cute snacks and blind boxes! The service is always amazing when I visit as the employees are always ready to help. It can get very busy so please have patience!

Yelp
Nijiya Market is my go-to for all things Japanese (or Asian) when I am in San Francisco. They have drinks, snacks, alcohol, frozen and fresh ingredients, condiments/sauces, premade sushi/sashimi bentos that often get discounted after a certain time, and any other groceries you may need. There is a security guard by the door (should that help you feel safer) and several cash registers for a speedier checkout. It does get a little cramped though, given the aisles are tight, so keep that in mind during busy hours! Still worth a visit though!

Yelp
Compared to other Nijiya market, this is on the smaller side but sufficient to get what you need. However, due to how compact the market is, there may be some varieties of items not found here which is understandable.

Yelp
great for groceries but the convenience meals were mid. I think I've been spoiled by japan or I got the wrong things... the salmon onigiri was so bland and the scant filling was suffocated into a corner. the takoyaki was overly dense. heard that the sushi and bowls are decent so maybe I'll try those next. but otherwise grocery shopping here is amazing!

Yelp
Nijiya is super reliable if you're just trying to grab a meal to go. Very fresh quality sushi and sashimi, and great beverage selection. We got the hamachi and salmon this day as a pregame for a sushi dinner. Hamachi was out of this world!!!
