After reading reviews, and several passings of this establishment I took a chance on Nishiki Ramen with great expectations of fulfilling my inner desire for a HOT, tasty bowl of delicious ramen. Our group of 6 was comprised of two native Japanese, two second generation Japanese, and two Americans that have lived many years in Japan.
After reviewing the menu, everyone carefully picked their desired variations, due to the numerous options available, and patiently awaited its arrival.
#1 - Smoke Bomb Black
#7 - Gyokai Tonkotsu
#3 - Akuma
and three Nishiki Original Ramen bowls without egg.
At first glance all of the meals were visually appealing, and their aroma was extremely inviting. My first slurp of the broth was truly Tonkotsu, and I was very happy going in, but the temperature of the broth was not the correct temperature for ramen, being lukewarm, which all parties involved agreed upon. Ramen is one of those meals that taste best on a cold, rainy day because it brings warmth to your body like a cup of tea. In addition, the texture of the noodles fell short.
All in all, the food was tasty, and the customer service was great, but my journey to find a Ramen joint that makes the cut, continues.
Ramen is a simple inexpensive meal in Japan, and when you are knocking on the door of $20 dollars for a small bowl of broth with a small amount of ramen noodles, and several different flavors, you are in the mediocre market. Traditional Ramen-ya's have only a few offerings from their stock broth and not every variation (Chinese, Japanese, etc.) under one roof.
Each establishment is the owner's original broth and recipe, and not a franchised experience.
I know this is America and not Japan but stay true to the craft. Ramen is an art, and served piping hot which requires slurping!
