Where to Eat Cajun and Creole Food in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Gumbo is an essential component of any good Cajun meal and Nita’s version is the real deal. It’s a zesty stew loaded with popcorn shrimp, scallops, crab meat, chicken, and Andouille sausage with a perfect amount of spice. Even better, the takeout-only restaurant tosses whole chicken wings in the savory roux to make tasty gumbo wings." - Ashok Selvam

Google
I ordered the signature bowl gumbo for the first time and loved it. It was ready quickly and just the right temperature. They have a neat and clean lobby but nowhere to sit and wait for your order to.

Chanel Gayles

Google
Getchu some good gumbo and more from Nita’s. Hands down some of the best gumbo in the City! Fresh and super flavorful and generous portions. Great packaging, travels well too! You will not be disappointed.

Google
Nita's gumbo wings are dangerously addictive, I cook and am very critical of food but I'll be Damned if the wings aren't fresh as ever cooked to order and the gumbo sauce is a unique mixture of perfection to be reckoned with and although the gumbo rice is a bit bland it's perfect with a bite of sauced up chicken... my mom was born in Louisiana and I know what it's supposed to taste like... they don't open until 4:pm either so they know what they are doing, don't need much time for a master piece to make its money. Please don't switch up, and people please don't miss out!

Google
This is the worst place ever I mean be honest when perparing someone’s food I just spent my money now I have to email to get a refund this is just sad

Chelisa Wilkins

Google
Just ordered the large shrimp gumbo, VERY UNIMPRESSED, this was my first time ordering from here, this is basically a roux with meat and let me be clear the shrimp were not large, this is soup not gumbo

Google
Good food! Note: This review is for the carryout place in Stoney Island! Just have to be patient when ordering, especially ordering online - you're better off just come in and order at the window. It is a carry-out only place. I'm adding photos so you can see the menu and prices. Although their prices have increased by about $0.50 for each items. They don't do full orders anymore. Which is fine by me because their half orders are plenty.

Nichole Michelle Jackson

Google
The vegetables in the gumbo (celery, green peppers and onions) were not cooked AT ALL. It’s like they were an afterthought. Large and crunchy. The roux is watery and lacks flavor. Very disappointing.

Chentey Morris

Google
They're always helpful even when very busy. I come from way North to purchase the gumbo. It is the closest I've found to my own. Plus if u buy it in half gallon you can doctor it up with some of your own items.

Yelp
This place is small and unassuming and far from my home and has no seating, but they make a very good gumbo. I like that they package the soup, crab meat, and rice separately, so you can assemble the gumbo at home. It was worth the trip there and back.

Yelp
Nitas gumbo on 81st stony island just disappointed me so bad. The Gumba was extremely salty , crab meat was more like noodles, and the shrimp was barely done. i recommend a new chef or new recipe ...that gumbo is terrible.

Diamond M.

Yelp
Doesn't even taste like gumbo. It's literally just roux and meat. I would not recommend. I am very disappointed.

Yelp
Heard about this place a long while ago and decided to give them a try recently. Their gumbo here is the alleged "showstopper ". The interior is small so you might want to order ahead. I ordered the Nitas Special which was supposed to come with crab, shrimp, chicken, and sausage. The roux/sauce base was very flavorful and I got everything that was included except for....the crab. Not one leg, piece of meat....NOTHING. So me being me, when I got home and noticed the discrepancy, I cooked a crab cluster I had in the freezer, and I added the meat to my supposed seafood gumbo. VOILA!!!! .....long story short, if crab is no longer included, don't charge for it and let the customer know. Other than that, the gumbo was very flavorful and hearty.

Yelp
Sorry to report that the food is terribly inconsistent here. I've tried it several times, many dishes from the gumbo to the sandwhiches. You could order the same dish and each time end up with something different. I always phone in and pick up. One positive is the person at the front bagging orders is always nice enough. ‍

Janess W.

Yelp
I came a couple weeks ago, food was wonderful and fast ! The customer service was the best the young lady greeted me with the biggest smile . I came from advertisement and was not disappointed

Christopher J.

Yelp
Horribly bad service also I'm going to have the city department of health come there to check out your kitchen bc there should be a reason I only get 3 shrimps 3 slices of of sausage and barely any chicken and just a pick of crab meat for the price point I paid for don't worry Better business bureau will be looking into this they are a fuck fraud don't even fucking deal with your business with them I'm going in...

Christopher J.

Yelp
Hey if you going to make some gumbo and jumbalya please do it right bc this shit taste like damn Zatarines and please don't have your children or Menials sale this shit bc it's a turn the fuck off overpricing for shit that my child can make for them own self no wonder why you didn't survive at you other location fucking over chicagoans you be moving soon... Sadly

Yelp
I been going to this restaurant for a couple of months now,I went up there last week to get some food and when I went to go place a order the person they have up front is not good with service and need more training on how to communicate I was asking her a question about the menu and she just looked at me like what I asked for stupid,I asked if the other front person was here so I can Ask her the question and maybe she can help me better.i was informed that she no longer works there so I just walked out and went somewhere else.i always enjoy their food and service but they need a little more help on their service,I probably won't be back soon.

Missy W.

Yelp
Food is ALWAYS good! Will go back any day! They season it with love and authenticity because I feel like I'm in Louisiana when I get the gumbo. Love it!

Yelp
Nita's is takeout only. If you want to dine in and with a larger menu, you can try their restaurant in Country Club Hills. Their customer service was great and even called me by name when I arrived. I ordered their five piece gumbo wings, and two of their Nitas Signature Gumbo bowls. Their gumbo wings, were tasty and even had a kick. It even came with gumbo rice which was also tasty. The Gumbo entree came with rice on the side as well as the crab meat. The bowl itself came with shrimp, chicken, and chicken andouille sausage. These bowls are pretty pricy, but you do get filled up. The roux for the gumbo was full of flavor but did taste a little salty for my taste. Overall the food was good, but just too damn far away to say I would come here often. I'll try and look for gumbo closer to home, and compare then.

Yelp
I have had them bookmarked for 2yrs. Everytime I think about coming they're closed. FINALLY on the south side, at a decent hour I stopped by. I ordered the gumbo wings and classic Anita gumbo. Took about 15-20mins to prepare my food. There are no tables to dine in. So I ate mine in my car. Gumbo wings are different. Basically it's a smothered gumbo chicken wing. Really unique find. I've never heard of anything like this. They came in a mild or spicy, I requested spicy, but i think I was given mild. I was glad I was feeling daring and tried them. The gumbo was good and flavorful, but it didn't stand up to the price tag. I would go back, but probably just for the gumbo wings.

Yelp
I called in an order to go after the lunch rush. I was told the order would be ready approximately 15 minutes after the time of my call. I didn't have to ask for a total. The guy who took my order politely asked me to let him calculate the total. Why don't most places do this? Everyone wants to know how much before they arrive, right? My order was ready when I got there, but there were two people ahead of me. Even still, the wait time wasn't long. I was surprised that this isn't a dine-in restaurant, as the online menu advertises for dine-in options. The other location (farther south) must be dine-in. It would be nice to note the difference online. I'm sure some first-timers have been thrown off before. The staff is friendly. It threw me off guard when I saw a flash from the back. Yes, a male worker came and took my picture. I was a little creeped out, but all wasn't lost. I got to pick as many drinks as I wanted, not because of the weird picture scenario but the mostly-male staff was definitely flirting (too bad I mostly drink water). The food was good. Check out the different daily specials! I'll be back to try more.

Yelp
Hello and hey y'all!!! Well I managed to make it to one of my favorite places in Chicago today. While I was in the area I decided to let yelp pick what I wanted to eat. First thing that popped up was Nita's Gumbo. So I am not one to comment on a neighborhood and I don't call certain areas "tha hood". But back to the food...... I walked in and was greeted with a smile from a young lady and she said could she helped me. I told her I was from out of town but was looking for some good food. She offered her suggestions and I decided to get what she recommended. I got the 2pc Gumbo Wings. Well I wish I had got 4 instead of 2. It was delicious very delicious. No very very very delicious. The chicken wings are fried and then a sauce is added over the top. The sauce was not like a smothered type deal it was just enough for each wing. I chose the hot sauce and yes it was hot but it was good. The wings also came with rice, kinda like a dirty rice and it was good as well. Please do yourself a favor and visit this spot, it's in a safe location on Stony Island. The food is simply ummm ummm good!

Yelp
Been wanting to try this gumbo and today Was The day. Size: for $13.00 The gumbo had big chunks of sea scallops, shrimp and they give You a small cup of crab(very small) to add, shrimp and plenty andouille sausage and chicken. Taste: The roux is executed perfect I Was missing thyme and okra otherwise The flava Was good not GREAT...and there Was no trinity But worth trying, oh and it wasn't spicy to me as I added Tabasco hehehe...

Yelp
South side? Craving cajun cuisine? Then stop by Nita's. I have only tried the special wings and the signature gumbo but I have been multiple times now. The gumbo wings were ok. Not my forte but the gumbo itself was on point, full of flavor. Comes with rice and a small container of crab. Prices are reasonable. There is limited parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty yummy and flavorful food. My fiancé came home with a shrimp pi boy sandwich and some gumbo!! It was pretty tasty. The gumbo was a little on the salty side but we added white rice to help with that. The poboy was not dry and had plenty of sauce. Yummy
google avatar

Chesley M.

Yelp
Disappointing to say the least. I was expecting more from this place and was highly let down. The gumbo seemed more like jambalaya and had little meat and lacked flavor. Being that there signature dish is Gumbo I was more than certain that cornbread was on their menu, especially since they have boxes of Jiffy displayed in the front window. I must say I was extremely taken a back when I received my order and my cornbread was pre packaged. I paid extra for the Cajun fries which were slightly soggy and again disappointing. The Choice of fry selection not the best and the season was a no for me. Overall I'd give an E for effort but I've had better boxed Zarterain's Gumbo than what was served to me.

Yelp
So, I'm from New Orleans and I love cajun food. I go here a lot because my nail shop is right next door. The first time I ever had the gumbo my guy bought some home after work. Being from New Orleans and growing up eating gumbo I would say it's ok. Heaven on Seven's gumbo is better too me. My favorite item from here is definitely the shrimp po-boy that's all I get. The shrimp aren't that big tho. I pretty much go here because it's a convenient location for me, but Surf's Up shrimp po-boy has BIGGER shrimp! Check out the pic and review I left on their page. They are legit. All in all, this is not a bad spot. I wish my grama was back there making the gumbo tho. Customer service is always great as well, so aside from the convenience of going after I get my nails done I'll also return because everyone is always very nice. They give out free samples of the gumbo if you want to taste before you buy. They are very professional.
google avatar

Ike I.

Yelp
I only tried their gumbo and it was definitely on point not the best but definitely good for it being in Chicago I suggest you try there gumbo wings as well
google avatar

Khari A.

Yelp
I've only given this place two stars mainly because of recent experience. I ordered the spicy carribean gumbo which should have prompted me to ask questions. For everyone else please do not order this item unless you are a fan of black beans. The order was literally 90% black beans while the description gives a totally different image in my opinion. My dissatisfaction continued after calling to find out if my order was wrong. The guy who answered and the cook who he consulted were dismissive and lacked any customer service skills. I'll come back to order something else but will ask questions next time and hope for the best.
google avatar

Redd P.

Yelp
They're gumbo could have been better and they should not just use gumbo sauce to season they're wings ....a little salt etc goes a long way.
google avatar

Cee Cee G.

Yelp
I'm giving 2 stars. Only because the rules are totally unreasonable. I Ordered a gumbo, I was told it would be a 2$ fee to warm it up.. but this is what you serve... I have to pay you to warm up something that should already be warm???? Makes no since black businesses kill they own self. Gumbo is supposed to be warm... if you feel that way smart thing is to just add in the price and not tell people to pay to warm food up from a hot food restaurant. Smh!
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
While I'd love to give this restaurant five stars I can not. The young lady that answered the phone after I was nothing but professional and inquiring about an order that was to be delivered to me over half and hour ago. I'm truly disappointed. It's always within our communities that we have to deal with such ignorance by being hung up on while patronizing a black owned business. After today, I won't patronize this restaurant anymore. Not until there's a change to the ignorance of the young lady that answers the calls for orders. I'll spend my monies further away from now on without the added attitude. Oh and there have been other complaints of being hung up on, read all reviews patrons.
google avatar

Kristian R.

Yelp
I am very picky about the ingredients in food. Let's just say I have a sensitive stomach. Nita's Gumbo has an excellent taste & although my family cooks it different, this is a great alternative. I would suggest the signature bowl. They have specials as well, just ask. P.S. If you love rice tell them to add more inside the signature bowl.
google avatar

S F.

Yelp
Okay so I have been craving gumbo and majority of places fix with pork or seafood only. Which sucks when you no longer eat those things. So I searched on Google and came across this place. First I called to see what they fixed their gumbo with and the lady in the phone was beyond amazing and helpful. So I drove over a hour to give this place a try. And it was WELL WORTH IT! SOOOOO GOOD, I LITERALLY ATE THE WHOLE BOWL OF CHICKEN GUMBO. And I'm picky. So needless to say I plan on becoming a regular. Worth the drive and love the non seafood and pork options.
google avatar

Natosha S.

Yelp
Great lunch option for the price and taste when you want more of a homemade fast food. I had the 4 wing with gumbo rice lunch special. Mild. Flavoring was great and food was hot. Parking is limited so plan ahead or take someone with you if you can. If you dont tend to eat out may be on the salty side but for others its probably just right.
google avatar

F. L.

Yelp
I saw the reviews for here and took the bus down from Hyde Park, and liked it enough to take the bus down a second time. The gumbo has a very rich flavor, and every element in it is cooked to just the right texture. The seasoning is salty enough that my mouth always feels a bit dry for the rest of the day, but it's probably worth it. On the whole, very solid gumbo, great balance of flavors. There's no proper seating area, but the two times I've been, I've just sat down on the bench and put the food in my lap. It gets the job done.
google avatar

Lizzie B.

Yelp
The last time I visited this gumbo spot I felt it was too liquidity and not enough ingredients (crab meat, shrimp chicken okra ,etc). I also remember it having a slight sour taste . I guess that really has kept me from returning since last year but I decided to give it another try just because . After eating from here last Saturday , and getting so sick to the point I could barely stand or function for a week --- I have vowed to never eat their Gumbo again. It had to have been an old batch of Gumbo I was sold because the very next morning I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen area( I was perfectly fine prior to, riding around enjoying summer time Chi & All). The worst feeling ever! I would really like to know how often Nita's Gumbo serves fresh Gumbo. Or everyone please never purchase Gumbo close to the restaurant close time #eek
google avatar

Brittney M.

Yelp
I stopped in Anita's Gumbo this evening after salivating thinking about delicious gumbo! I'm so glad I was determined to stop in because it was absolutely AMAZING! I ordered the Signature Gumbo and buttermilk wings! The Gumbo: nice kick of spice! Delicious roux! Nice amount of crab, shrimp, chicken and sausage! The wings: Delish! I didn't get the wings with the roux on top since I figured it was pretty much the gumbo I had on the side. The customer service was excellent! Everyone was friendly, the owner was very personable as well! Thank you for bringing delicious Gumbo to Chicago! I'll be spreading the word and will also return!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I would pass this spot often and would see large crowds during the lunch hour. I stopped in during the late afternoon and did not have to wait at all. I got the signature gumbo and it had great flavor. I think it could've had a few more bits of seafood considering the $10 price tag, but I was not too disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
I am 100% about supporting new businesses in our neighborhoods. the food here is amazing. However, i called in an order tuesday, approx 3pm..8100 s. stoney island location..A young lady answered, i gave her my order and asked what is my total. It got quiet, and she asked me do I have one of their menus. In essence she was telling me to add it up myself. Really????... I went to pick up the food and saw Miss Mary Sunshine, i dont think she was even 20yrs old. However, it was obvious that she did not want to be there, she looked miserable, unwelcoming,etc...Whoever is in charge of hiring, needs to fire her before they lose customers. let her sit at home and snapchat, facebook and instagram..i won't be back to this location!!! Yelpers, stop spending your money where you don't get good customer service!!!!!!

Yelp
Delivery was quicker than I thought, gumbo is good, Shrimp Po Boy had too much mayonnaise and could have been better.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
I love their gumbo. It is richly flavorful and excellent. I consider it a treat!
google avatar

Ravyn S.

Yelp
O my Gwad! Have had this nagging hankering for gumbo and this place was everything. The flavor was perfect, service was friendly and fast and the food was fresh and appears that quality ingredients were used.

Yelp
So on the menu it says they dont use pork or beef right? Um u do know andouille sausage is pork right? Yeah and it tastes like pork also. Definition: Andouille is a spicy sausage made from smoked pork. Andouille sausage originated in France, where it was traditionally made with the stomach and intestines of the pig. In the United States, andouille sausage is characteristic of Cajun cuisine, where it is featured in traditional dishes such as gumbo and jambalaya. Cajun andouille is spicier than the French version, and it is made with pork butt. Wtf do u all think ur fooling? And it's not all that good either, mostly sauce, barely any meat in some bowls. Save your money. And u non pork eaters are EATING PORK.
google avatar

Maiesha T.

Yelp
The gumbo wings were not my thing. It was a wet fried wing. ‍ Not for me. I didn't like the flavor. It was too expensive for a gravied fried wing. I had the shrimp poboy. It was delicious. I would definitely order that again. I'm also not a big fan of their fries.

Kenneth T.

Yelp
I order for pickup through Uber Eats and when got there the order wasn't ready. I was told five more minutes then that turned into 10 more minutes. After waiting for ten minutes I was told my order was never received. When I asked if a manager was on the premises I was ignored. I was upset and a lady came from the back and said my order was never processed. Not mentioned I was hung up on when trying to place an order initially.
google avatar

Bernice G.

Yelp
Perfect for me I loved everything about that chicken omg it was fire hopefully I get some tomorrow morning before work because baby and the gumbo rice is to die for I love love love it

Ben T.

Yelp
Excellent po boys and gumbo wings. Po boys are the best in the city. They're a good size and they don't skimp on shrimp. Shrimp is juicy and still crisp with delivery. Fresh lettuce and tomatoes with good remoulade sauce. All-around excellent. Gumbo wings are soaked in delicious spicy sauce but still crispy. Highly recommended
google avatar

Joanna S.

Yelp
I enjoyed this place. It's small and quaint! The gumbo is good! It's not what you get at home in terms of thickness but it satisfies a itch if you're looking for gumbo! Flavor is amazing! Price point for the size is a little high but it's seafood so I get it. Overall I'd go here again.
google avatar

Estella B.

Yelp
You're better off making your own gumbo at home if you really want some lol. I came here last weekend and the service was great but my food wasn't the best. Yes it was full of flavor BUT my gumbo wings were trash. A worker recommended them to me and he obviously doesn't have good taste buds. I got the signature bowl and it was okay but I was expecting the crab to look like the picture on their advertisement. I barely got any crab. They put it on the side in little salad dressing to go cup. That made me very disappointed. I'll just make me some at home next time I'm craving some.
google avatar

Carla W.

Yelp
Ok, I have to admit that I haven't tried the gumbo YET, I'm very particular and usually only eat my sisters version. However, the shrimp PoBoy!!!!! Ohhhh yassssss!!!! The shrimp is perfectly fried and seasoned overflowing from the deliciously perfectly bread. The fries are definitely worth the calories so don't skip um. Now, they carry sweet potato pie slices too. OhhhhhhhMG. Provided by Jimmy Jams Sweet Potato cafe, are the best ever. My favorite is the banana bourbon sweet potato pie. Strictly carry out. Great customer service from enthusiastic people. They're proud of the food and they should be !
google avatar

Gene H.

Yelp
I literally just left here and I Order the 2 piece buttermilk wings which were too little but they were good... the signature gumbo tho is misleading because the amount of crab meat u get you hardly even can taste it... it says it has scallops but that's a lie also!!.. I mean it's tasteful but at the same time at those prices I expect to get wats on the menu!!..
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Really had a taste for the gumbo wings. I bragged about them to my girlfriend. I was very hungry and they are closed at 4:45 when the sign says they are open until 9. Very disappointing and unprofessional
google avatar

Fatha S.

Yelp
The food is great!!!! I'll only giving them 1 star because of the service.. the guy by the name Maurice is VERY RUDE

Yelp
I love this place. I have a seafood allergy but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy delicious gumbo. My first dish here was the Caribbean and I've been hooked since. Doesn't help that it's literally right around the corner-less than a 2 minute walk. The desserts are wonderful, the mac n cheese is great, and the wings are perfection. Check out Anita's Big Chase-it's $27.99 for shrimp gumbolaya, chicken gumbolaya, 2 liter pop, 6 gumbo wings and 6 buttermilk wings. I can feed my family of 5 with leftovers.
