"Hidden between a muffler shop and a strip mall, this wooden-cabin taqueria announces itself with the aromas of asada and al pastor from the grill and a trompo set up out front. Owner Isaac Jauregui captures the surreal charm of a Mexican taqueria—heartfelt hospitality and charcoal-kissed flavors—in a small corner of Chicago, and the place has rightly been abuzz since opening in May 2025. The short menu includes steak, al pastor, and veggie tacos. Start with thinly sliced al pastor in a lightly fried, chewy tortilla; charcoal char around the edges adds texture and flavor—order con todo for all the garnishes, including pineapple. The asada is good quality, tender, and well-seasoned, finished with a slice of avocado, with limes standard. Both salsas deliver, a green that skews orangy from its time over charcoal and a red, and while there are steak and al pastor burritos plus a breakfast option with egg and ham, you’re here for the tacos. Drinks include horchata and coffee, and an unlisted but now available atole in different flavors. The vibe is part taco stand, part garage party, with one coveted first-come table for four in back against a turf-green backdrop and a view of both the grill and the muffler shop. Best for al pastor fans and anyone chasing a quick bite—solo, late-night, or pre/post-party—with hours until 11 p.m. most nights.
