South Bend’s Best Restaurants for a Great Meal | Eater Chicago

"In the late 1800s, South Bend built a 19th-century Queen Anne-style firehouse on Portage Avenue to be the quarters for five firemen, a stable of horses, and a Studebaker wagon. Today, the firehouse is home to No.6 Scratch Kitchen, a modern fine dining establishment with a daily changing menu and extensive wine list. Customer highlights include vegetable risotto, filet with fresh fig, goat cheese and mashed potatoes, and a cauliflower burger." - Drew Mentock

10/10 100 % recommend. Hands down one of my favorite restaurants. The staff always go above and beyond. The chef is personably and speaks with customers. The menu changes daily and always has an assortment of fresh, local offerings. The ambiance is calm and modern. There was a local guitarist playing music quietly in the corner. The wait staff know anything you could possibly ask about the menu. One of my favorite things is that the menu is concious of dietary trends such as vegetarian options. Care went into every part of the design of this restaurant and it shows. There are even some local gifts that can be bought at the hostess station. I've been multiple times and I have never been let down. No matter what I am always able to find something I enjoy. Reservations are recommended.

Great atmosphere. Loved the building, decor, ambiance, and general vibe but poor parking situation. Once sat, we waited 17 mins to be greeted. Drinks took a bit too long to come out as well. Our server was VERY nice and did a great job taking our orders, but wasn’t very timely. My fiancé ordered a wine to pair with her steak and both our plates were almost empty by the time the order was even put in. Finally, the soup was amazing, as was our app and the wine selection, but while the filets were tender and juicy, they were thin, fatty, and even a bit under-seasoned. For a $54 filet I was very disappointed. I’ve had better cuts for $30. Two star for food is low. Would say 2.5 is much fairer, but not an option. Overall it was a good experience. There’s just some room for improvement given the price.

It was Latin Night, and the menu was really inspired! The chef came over to talk us through the options and told us the inspirations for each dish. The crab cakes were incredible- mo fillers and lots of flavor. We also had the chips and guac which was super fresh-though a few more chips would’ve helped. We also had the skirt steak w chimichurri sauce, asparagus, and rice. The steak could have used a little bit more seasoning but the chimichurri sauce was delicious. My drink was DELICIOUS as well- a take on a margarita w cucumber and spice. Would highly recommend !

No.6 Scratch Kitchen in South Bend stands out as a charming historic site that offers high-quality dining with a personal touch. During our visit, we opted for a lighter fare, sharing some appetizers and ordering beverages, and were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional quality of the food. One of the highlights of our experience was the staff's willingness and ability to customize a mocktail for my companion. This bespoke drink was not only a delightful surprise but also a testament to the restaurant's dedication to customer satisfaction and creativity. The menu at No.6 Scratch Kitchen changes daily, reflecting the kitchen's commitment to freshness and innovation. Each dish is made from scratch and to order, which ensures that every meal is crafted with care and attention to detail. While this approach to dining does reflect in the pricing, it's a worthwhile consideration for those looking for a unique and high-quality meal experience. Although we only stopped in for snacks and refreshments, the quality of the offerings has us eagerly anticipating a return visit for a full meal. The possibility of a brunch menu in the future adds another exciting reason to revisit. For diners who appreciate fresh, made-from-scratch meals in a setting full of historical charm, No.6 Scratch Kitchen is a top-notch choice in South Bend. Whether you're budget-conscious or looking to indulge, the culinary experience here is sure to impress.

The ambiance and service were top-notch. The parking situation is horrible. For the price of the food, you would expect better quality. I got the airline chicken; it was probably some of the toughest chicken I've ever eaten, and I could only get down 4 bites. The mashed potatoes were very runny and tasted like instant. My date got the New York strip, ordered it rare, and it came medium-well.

Food was 10/10. Service left a little to be desired. This restaurant has such an appreciation for gastronomy. Chef Amanda was amazing. Very personable while running the restaurant. I sat at the bar, eating the skirt steak and lemon blueberry bread pudding. The food was AMAZING; however, the bartender (not Judy) did not even acknowledge me for the second half of my meal. The first half of my meal, Judy checked in making sure everything was up to par. The second bartender who took over didn’t even acknowledge me. I had to ask Judy for my check otherwise it would’ve taken so long for me to close out my bill. The food here is quite expensive (which I don’t mind) but because of this, the service has to match. Once again, although the service seemed a bit chaotic, the food is so good that it’s worth a try.

Met friends out for my wife’s birthday and had an incredible meal. The atmosphere was reflective of the Halloween holiday but not over the top. The wait staff was amazing with the way they did a round Robin service with all there. They helped with wine selections and menu questions, which was definitely set up for people who know food and fine dining. A amazingly big shout out to Chef Vince who easily stole the show with his presentation of the food and flavor he was able to mingle into amazing dishes. I highly recommend all to go back multiple times to have a world class experience.

Husband and I visited before a concert at Notre Dame. Incredible food, service and atmosphere. Interior was gorgeous. The filet I ordered was perfectly cooked medium rare. Asparagus was warm but not mushy, mashed potatoes were seasoned and so tasty! Will be returning!
