The Best Places to Eat and Drink in the Lower Haight

"To truly understand Noc Noc, you need to actually experience it. "Quirky," "funky," and "Tim Burton-esque" all start to get at the grungy vibe, but you need to sit in a nook painted with what can best be described as caveman art in order to really get that you're in one of SF's most unusual bars. There's no liquor — just beer, wine, and sake — but the beer list is pretty extensive (no Budweiser, Coors, or PBR), with strong happy hour options." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Dive Bars in San Francisco

"Come early to secure yourself one of the creepy-cozy nooks that make Noc Noc one of the best bars in the Bay Area to pass an hour or nine in. There’s no liquor here, but the excellent beer and sake selection, plus the otherworldly decor, are enough of a trip on their own." - Lena Park, Garrett Schlichte

"Take a plane, crash it into a psychedelic beer cave, and you have Noc Noc. Or as one bartender here described it - the Flintstones on acid. This is the place to go if you’re looking to stray from the hip and trendy. Black lights and eclectic cave paintings mix well with a solid beer selection, including some extra ciders and sour beers, too. Google
One of my favorite bars, especially for sour beers. Haven’t been here since pre-pandemic and was actually worried that it would be gone. But they made it through and it was bustling tonight! Bartender was pretty cool!

My husband loves sours, so he was stoked we stumbled across this trippy little spot! The owner was super chill and friendly, and the cider I had was crisp and ice cold. We had a blast hanging out and planning the rest of our evening here!

Google
Vibey bar with a great owner/bartender. Dark lighting and aboriginal art vibes. Good beer selection both in cans and on draft. Wine and sake also. Happy hour specials til 7 pm

Google
The closest bar experience to a great acid trip with no anxiety :), and with an incredible beer list and the most congenial and welcoming owner ever to boot. My go-to 1st date spot and favorite bar in SF.

Google
This place is SO weird like really out there. Smelled like burning. No liquor only beer wine cider etc. Theme is schizophrenic Fred Flintstone. They were blasting BigBootieMix Vol. 14 while I was there for someone’s 29th birthday. If I’m having my 29th b day there, shoot me…

Aaron Nile

Google
Friendly owner, interesting atmosphere, good beer selection. Will come again.

Rahmat was an amazing host, it was an absolute pleasure to grab a few drinks and hang out!

Google
Very cool eclectic little place. That's maybe not such a big thing for San Francisco, but I really enjoyed this bar. Right next to Toronado which is touted as a great beer bar, I enjoyed Noc Noc far more. The beer list may be smaller, but there were still excellent selections available. Great service.

Yelp
I visited about 30 minutes before closing, so it was pretty empty. The lighting and decor gave me the feeling of being aboard an alien spaceship.
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
This place is one of a kind, from the drinks to the decor. Their tagline is "Lower Haight's Most Unusual Bar" and they MEAN it (in the best way). I recommend giving their speciality drinks a try, like the "Snake Bite" (a half mix of Pilsner and cider - don't "noc" it til you try it lol). But seriously, great place to catch up with friends without the messy large crowds of other bars. Maybe it's because the hardest thing they serve here is sake so people aren't as rowdy; regardless, highly recommend!

Yelp
Visited Noc Noc with friends and had an incredible time. The atmosphere is eclectic and vibrant, reminiscent of a vintage sci-fi dive bar with unique chairs and colorful lighting. The selection of sake and beer is excellent, especially the sake bombs which are a must-try. The bar has a chill, islandy vibe that's perfect for a relaxed night out. Service is friendly and attentive, with staff making the experience memorable. Although parking can be a challenge, the overall experience is definitely worth it. Highly recommend for a fun and unique night out!

Yelp
A very almost vintage sci-fi feel of a dive bar with unique chairs and colorful lighting across the area. We kept it simple and got a beer, but the pour was done well and came out smoothly from the tap. Overall I'd say check this spot out if you want a chiller vibe yet still keeping some cool artwork all around to check out as you sip away.
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Came here with a meetup group on a Friday night. To be honest I'm pretty sure it was busy because of the size of our group. They only sell wine or beer or (randomly) sake. I started with Pinot noir. Then proceeded to do 4 sale bombs (be bombs are $6 each!!). I definitely will come back for the sake bombs they were so good! $10 minimum for credit cards so bring cash since most single drinks are less than $10 The ambience is pretty vibey and Islandy maybe? And dimly light. I really really enjoyed this spot and the company was great too

Yelp
Vibes: 11/10! Location and parking: Location 9/10 - limited street parking 5/10 Price: 8/10 Cleanliness: 7/10 Seating: 9/10 Noc Noc is a charming neighborhood sake bar with a unique and vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of psychedelic Keith Haring art. Rahmat, the owner, is an incredibly lovely person! His warm welcome and vast knowledge truly make you feel at home. They offer a wide selection of sake and beer, although they do not serve liquor. The bar often features live DJs for entertainment. Noc Noc occasionally hosts private parties, so please be aware that they may not always be open to the public. Despite its cozy size, Noc Noc provides various seating options in different areas, catering to both intimate gatherings and larger groups. The presence of a tranquil water fountain at the back adds to the overall ambiance. It's definitely a bar worth experiencing!

Yelp
Greats vibes and lovely ownership! A perfect dive bar if you're looking to grab just drinks

Yelp
Wow! Such an amazing place, went on a walkabout in the city of SF, stopping only at bars, Travis was the only kind bartender. Every bar we were the only people at the bar, but Travis made it such a memorable experience compared to others! The decor and ambiance!

Yelp
Fantastic people in a great neighborhood. International beer selection too! No food, but bring it in if you're hungry.

Yelp
I've loved this bar since I first wandered in 3 years ago. It has psychedelic cave vibes. That's all I will say about the inside--you have to go experience it for yourself. There's no other bar like this in SF. I love the chill vibes here and the fact that you can actually hear what other people are saying vs. scream over people and music. I love their Sour options and love the fact that they have Sake. I don't know how to spell her name, but Jeanile? Janeal?--was super awesome! Great conversation, giggles, and vibes. She definitely made our night there exponentially better!
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
I'm glad this place still exists. It feels like a dive that's been lost by time. It's still decorated in the fashion of a downed plane, and the joint is still cash only. Graffiti lines its walls, and the worn-down cushions remain. Unlike most hipster joints with $20 cocktails and uncomfortable seating, you could get lost in a night out here while throwing back some beers and just enjoying the eclectic tunes. It's a throwback that I fear will soon be lost to gentrification and time, so get in while you can.
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
What a cool little hole in the wall on Haight St! Great selection of craft brews, friendly staff, and dope music in an otherworldly atmosphere. Also check out their happy hour specials! A must if you're in this area...JeNeel is the best!
google avatar

Helen J.

Yelp
We really liked coming here to see Janelle, it's a bummer she got fired but she wasn't being professional before she was let go, forgetting orders, going into the kitchen for 5 minutes, letting long lines of frustrated customers build up, just not being a professional bartender. The nice long haired guy is great but we miss her! Anyway, the bar is awesome, the ambiance is awesome, the beers are awesome and so are the prices.
google avatar

Jeremy H.

Yelp
The beer is still great, the place has a great culture, and a lot of that is thanks to bartenders here like Jeneel. I'm extremely happy Noc Noc made it to the otherside of a pandemic that claimed at lot of businesses. With zero screens and zero distractions it's a great place for quality time with others.

Yelp
We rented out Noc Noc in late January to host a surprise engagement party for some of our friends. It was a fantastic experience and would totally recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, intimate space to celebrate a special occasion with those you love. Rahmat, the owner, gave us a great quote for the evening (the best we got in town) and was super responsive in the days leading up to the event. On the day of, he tended bar (serving a really nice variety of beer & sake) and was just a really fun, friendly presence. He let us show up early to set up decorations, bring in outside food and got us hooked into the bar's sound system so we could get everyone dancing. It was a night to remember and we were all very grateful to Rahmat and Noc Noc for making it so easy. I will definitely be back in the future!

Yelp
Noc Noc's dive bar is dimly lit with vibrant colors giving its own unique atmosphere that might make you feel as if you were enjoying drinks in some epic and prehistoric space cantina! Unusual chairs or seating that is arranged in such a way as to be little nooks everywhere. I mostly enjoy how easy going this place is to visit.

Yelp
My favorite Lower Haight bar, dark and cozy. Been drinking here on and off for 20 years when I travel to SF on business. The staff are all cool, friendly and knowledgeable about beer. The owner Rahmat is a super nice guy and the pretty girl with blond hair (Janeel I think), is awesome. I have been in town for a few days with my friend from Seattle celebrating his 50th birthday and she went out of her way to get some cupcakes delivered as a nice birthday surprise for him. 5 stars for the bar, 5 stars for the owner and 5 stars for the bartender for going the extra mile to deliver a great customer experience. Can't wait to come back!!!! Mike Monroe.

Yelp
This place is awesome. great beer selection and top notch staff. The décor is fantastic, and I can only describe it as Beetlejuice meets the flintstones on a plane ride to bohemia... no TVs, just good music in the background :)
google avatar

Dotty C.

Yelp
Such a cool vibe! And the owner was super helpful and kind! Beer and wine only but worth it! Cannot wait to go back.

Emilia B.

Yelp
Hosted a surprise party at Noc Noc and the owner was so kind and accommodating to our group. We had a blast and really enjoyed the experience! I would definitely recommend considering Noc Noc for any events. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We hosted a surprise party for my friends' engagement here and it was wonderful. Rahmat was very accommodating and very friendly--absolutely would recommend this place.

Yelp
This place is such a vibe, I love it! The bartender is so nice, and so welcoming. He really adds to the experience. If you're here, you'll be taken care of.
google avatar

Yelp
The vibe at Noc Noc has been right all night. Everything about the atmosphere is desirable in the most genuine way. This bar is not trying too hard, just hard enough. Try the uncle pat or the sour monkey. You can't go wrong with any drink. There were so many different types of people in this bar and we were all having the best time in here. Any time spent at Noc Noc is time well spent
google avatar

Dipesh G.

Yelp
Pros - Great beer selection - The bartender's are usually pretty nice - Cool and weird ambiance - They take credit cards Cons - No lock on the men's room door
google avatar

Jem M.

Yelp
Shaun was our best bartender on a slow Saturday night. He looks like a doppelgänger of Bradley Cooper. My friends and I enjoyed beers over wine and the decorations were interesting to look at. This bar was a cross between a lot of things being a sports bar, a lounge, an art gallery, a clothing shop, and a random Super Nintendo street fighter session.

Yelp
The NocNoc is hands down my favorite bar in California. A friend and I were roadtripping across the country and stumbled upon it while on a stroll down Haight. It feels like you have walked into a scenario from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," as though some kind of acid-trip is causing the walls to melt off and you are tunnelling into a trippy entrance to a psychedllic cave. Every chair is unique and different, the best ones are the ones on the floor against the rough wall to the right hand side of the bar. Everything in "the cave" is one-of-a-kind, and it has a neanderthal-noir feel with animal print patterns floating around, crazy lighting(which fortunately for some, is rather low), and a DJ mixing an ecelectic mix throughout the entire journey. It is also fantastic because if you come as a group you can sneak into an enclave to claim a niche near the window. It is just the right size, located on the far east side of Haight near the park, and mainly locals roll through so it does not get too crowded. It is a great place to experience and I definitely will be back again.

Yelp
Ever miss Halloween? Need some October spirit? Want your date to think you're a quirky, artsy, human? Ya this could be the place for you. Dark red lighting, simple drinks, covey areas to sit and analyze the room. I was brought here on a first date and ended up loving it. I say this as someone who loves Tim Burton, Halloween, and October.

Kyle P.

Yelp
I am brand new to Yelp, but I hopped on to leave this place a review because holy crap! This place is rad. I had a friend in town visiting last night and he wanted to experience a cool SF bar. Old school punk rock playing when I walked in - plus. Unique out of this world art all over the bar - plus. Sexy bartender with park ranger background and sense of humor - huge plus. Top of the line beer with several bottled options - huge plus. Tasty mixed beer options, the bartender suggested the white apple, which was super tasty - huge plus. Cool bar patrons - huge plus. Old SF vibes and history - huge plus. Nothing to complain about here.

Yelp
"And now it's time to play. Hip hip hip hip hooray!" - The Fraggles Noc Noc is where Fraggle Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraggle_Rock) would have hung out in their downtime, in between Fraggle Rock sets....if they boozed it up (cause we all know they were smoking up) and weren't in the mood for flaming zambucca shots. Bobby Trendy's macabre-obsessed cousin could have easily decorated Noc Noc... blindfolded. It's interior looks like someone did a couple of whiffs of something and found some inner Burning Man persona and deco-puked all over the place. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, It's different. Noc Noc gives you something to look at. It's artistic and fun. Borderline "special." Noc Noc takes takes majlis style seating to a new level. Their low cushioned floor seating reminds me of mandatory carpet story time in elementary school; picking at carpet lint, while I listened to the Little Engine that Could. Noc Noc's seating is similar, intimate and relaxing. Their window alcoves are also fun spots to hang out, and are perfect for ( I stress small) group conversations and people watching. And they have a live DJ. A big plus right there. But athough Noc Noc has its unique charm, it isn't really my kind of bar. It lacks the warm atmosphere that I love about the Page Bar and they don't serve hard alcohol. They only serve wine, sake, and beer. I've heard their wine and beer are solid, but it seems surreal toasting wine at Noc Noc, and I have trouble finishing and appreciating beer lately. The last time I finished a bottle or pint of beer...I was watching a new episode of Project Runway. It's been awhile. Additionally Noc Noc does get loud, and if you're perched on the corner of a table, you just get bits and pieces of stories. Friend "Yeah....he..........finger!" Me "what?" Friend "And she....stuffed.....pie!" Me "what?" After playing conversation mad libs for a good half-hour, hanging out with the smokers outside of Noc Noc, becomes a welcome break. Sigh of relief. Ears open. I can understand everything. And it's always nice to get some light, because Noc Noc is dimly lit. Sigh of relief. Eyes open. I can see everything. But... ... even though Noc Noc isn't where I'll take my weekend tolerance, if you're with the right people, and are quick on the claiming of seats, it has the potential to be a cozy and fun pre-gaming spot.

Yelp
If you could make a bar out of the house from the movie Beetle Juice. This would be the place. I kept thinking that the song "Day-O" was about to start and we were all going to start uncontrollably singing along and dancing to it. This is totally the type of place my husband and I would frequent if we lived closer. The only bad thing I noticed is that they only serve beer & wine. I would rather have a funky cocktail here than a glass of beer. Though, the beer I did have was called "The Big Black Daddy." It was fun just saying that.
google avatar

Alex Y.

Yelp
Super funky, super cool. Friendly staff. Great beer and sake. Great vibes.

Yelp
It was a dark and stormy night. OK, it was a balmy (65 degrees) January day on Haight Street and we wanted to check out the local watering holes. Our 21-year old son pointed us at Noc Noc, a curious, dark cave of a bar on a noteworthy block (barwise) in the lower Haight. Were the strings of lights leftover from Christmas? or was it just part of the oddball decor. We warmed our hands by the fake fireplace, took a few looks around the dimly lit and weirdly decorated intereior, and grabbed seats at the bar. Seventeen draft taps stared us down, with a menu offering beer drinks like Black Racer (a Guinness/Racer 5 black & tan) and Uncle Pat (Guinness & cider). Andrea, our cheery bartender-ette was both fun and entertaining! The ample 16-oz pours were $1 off during HH (until 7 pm daily). Noc Noc is another one of the reasons to check out the lower Haight! Its bars and restaurants are as good or better as in the more touristy Haight, and you'll find more locals and less traffic. Plus, at $15, you can pick up a souvenir T shirt that will let all your friends know you visited hippieville Haight St!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this bar a couple of months ago late one Sunday night and have been back most weeks ever since. It's a cool dark place to hide form people and there is usually a very eclectic music mix on. I can't remember the bartenders name, but he has a massive beard and a tiny dog. He's been great to chat with at the bar when you can find a seat and has even got me to enjoy sake, If your in the hood and looking for a chill place to grab a beer or maybe some sake I would give Noc Noc a try.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
The place is decorated so strangely that I can't help but bring my out-of-town guests here. The beer selection is great and you can usually find a seat. (Is it just me, but was this place inspired by the movie Beetlejuice?)
google avatar

Dario R.

Yelp
The place feels different with cold sake. Get it. Update: I'm worried because I find myself almost every day here. So I'm either an alcoholic or a fan. Anyway, if you happen to come here and you find a melancholic guy drinking sake in a brown fake leather jacket, come say hi. Love this place.
google avatar

Adam X.

Yelp
Dali meets Disneyland: There aren't too many bars like this in the world. Everything inside is hand crafted. the designer (whose name eludes me after forever) deisnged this space and Zip Zap hair salon about a block away by curving huge sheets of copper above the bar, sweeping concrete benches and booths, and jutting wood seating at the bar. Someone painted over the copper years ago, but its still beautiful. I love grabbing a non-filtered sake (about $9) and hanging out with a friend. Great cheap happy hours (i believe $3-6 beers) and the bartenders are great. I remember being here one night in the front booth with a galfreind (we were both married but separated) making out, and a homeless woman came in chatting us up saying you are such a nice couple. Are you guys married? Well yes, yes we are. But, but not to each other.

Yelp
This is for sure one of my favorite bars in the Area. Usually after getting the job done at Toronado next door, we stumble over here for one or 2 last beers before wandering around to find some shitty pizza to satisfy our drunk munchies. Aside from the fact that it's just a really cool looking Tim Burton-ish cave/bar, the crowd is always way chill and it never seems to get TOO crowded. I've always been able to find somewhere to sit comfortably without wanting to violently murder anybody. The last time I was here, we'll just say I was feeling a little 'euphoric', and I couldn't think of a better place where I wanted to just sit and space out and enjoy a nice cold beer. I felt like I was literally in a Tim Burton/Henry Selick movie (which, if anyone knows me, is basically my dream in life.) Needless to say, it was a pretty good night. I definitely suggest swinging by here if you're in the area and want a change of scenery from the usual (and a cold brew, obviously). You can't go wrong.
google avatar

Elysia M.

Yelp
Such a fun bar! I can't really describe to you what the decor is like inside except for to me it looks like a plan cashed into a cave and there are cave drawings and tribal things all over the walls in blacklight glow paint! How cool?! The staff here are pretty nice and so are the drink prices. Not too shabby for a hip place like this. The crowd itself it nice and grungy and hipster. Everyone that I have ever encountered here are pretty nice.. But I can't say much for the people actually on the street. There are a few crazies out there. And cleanliness? Well, it's a bar. It's as clean as a grungy bar is going to get.

Emily A.

Yelp
Bartender was great! Came here on a Saturday evening around 9pm. Was not too busy and the ambiance and atmosphere could be most related to a 'moody cave'. Unique and fun bar. Pretty low key/quiet. The guava ace cider is delicious and drinks are very reasonably priced!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Friendly bartenders. Cozy, not too loud at happy hour with good prices. Allows dogs. If you're lucky enough to get the front corner booth, the window opens. Great alternative to Tornanado.
google avatar

Adrienne B.

Yelp
This place is dope as hell! One of the coolest bars ever. My boyfriend and I came here while we waited for the ramen resto across the street to open. They have a great selection of sour beers and had an awesome vibe..definitely gunna bring my friends here when they visit sf :)

Yelp
9 years ago, when I was a cancer patient, me and a fellow patient couldn't find where our Qi Gong chinese healing class was one week, so we blew it off and ended up drinking sake all night at this place till we were soaked silly. If Yelp existed I woulda five-starred it ez. Having not seen my ole friend for a long time, we decided to hit Noc Noc's for old time's sake. Hadn't changed a bit of its fuzzy little navel. Still just beer, wine and sake. Great sound system and DJ (we were treated to a night of brit pop). Well populated with locals, not just lower haight hipsters but a good mix. We got soaked again, but kept enough of our faculties together to stagger out with good memories. Same time. next decade.

Yelp
Great place to go with friends! Friendly staff/bartenders Great selection of drinks Awesome music Interior is trippy! Truly one of a kind in the city Worth Checking out

Yelp
Sure - unique, strange, creative, and imaginative - but all that didn't make this place a nice place to enjoy a drink. Is it worth a visit just to check out what everyone tries so hard to describe? Not really.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
A quirky "dive bar" vibe with more space. An eclectic, aesthetic cross between an Indiana Jones cave and an Alice-in-Wonderland Fantasy Trip. Great, more rare beer selection. And best of all the nicest owner. Let us set up balloons for a friends birthday and even offered us paper plates for the cake we brought. 10/10

Dan W.

Yelp
Fully reopened. One of the coolest bars in SF. Incredible inside with cheap drinks and great recorded music playing. You'll feel transformed to the outer realms.

Yelp
We had come to the bar while the sun still hung high, there were many people on the street and the people were drunk, drunker than we would want to be. We walked in and the decor was memorable and we knew that memorable people would be here, we ordered a round. We sat in a narrow corner and the music was enjoyable, as was the drink, and he and I talked about a number of things. We spoke to the barman and he was an honest and good man, he wore a Slayer hoodie and his dog was friendly to strangers. A group of drinkers had enjoyed too much and were acting like fools, and the barman sent them away despite their arguing. The bar is a fine and good place to drink at. - Ernest Hemingway
