Went for brunch with my spouse and two female cousins and had an excellent experience from start to finish.
We arrived earlier than planned and had a reservation through OpenTable at 9:15 a.m., which worked out perfectly. We were greeted promptly by the hostess and seated immediately. Service throughout the meal was smooth and well-paced. Our server, Joselyn (if I'm remembering correctly), was warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive without hovering.
We started with the boudin balls and Cajun meat pies. Both were outstanding. The boudin balls had a perfectly crisp exterior with a steamy, moist, and flavorful interior. Easily some of the best I've had. The Cajun meat pies were equally satisfying--crispy outside with a rich, savory filling. Both appetizers were well-seasoned throughout and paired nicely with the remoulade, which added an extra layer of flavor without overpowering the dishes.
One cousin arrived late, but we ordered the classic beignets for her ahead of time. They disappeared quickly, which says everything. I'll definitely be ordering my own next visit.
For entrees, one cousin ordered the Green Eggs & Ham, a Cajun-style open-faced Benedict on a buttermilk biscuit with Rockefeller spinach, bacon bits, and seasoned potatoes. She enjoyed it, though it wasn't what she was craving that morning--more of a preference issue than a quality issue.
My spouse ordered the crawfish étouffée, served with rice and bread, plus a side of scrambled eggs. The étouffée was silky, aromatic, and deeply flavorful with a well-developed roux and sweet, briny crawfish. Even more impressive was that my spouse, who is usually picky with unfamiliar dishes, enjoyed most of it.
I ordered a cup of red beans and rice and was genuinely impressed. Rustic, comforting, and deeply satisfying--earthy, savory gravy with slices of smoky, caramelized andouille throughout. It was perfect for a chilly morning and reminded me why this dish is such a classic.
My main dish was the catfish po'boy, and it was easily one of the best I've had in San Antonio. Perfectly fried, cornmeal-crusted catfish with great seasoning, dressed with Cajun mayo and fresh vegetables on a classic po'boy roll. The sides--seasoned potatoes and red beans and rice--made it even better. This is a must-try.
The late-arriving cousin ordered red beans and rice and a cup of gumbo to-go, both of which looked excellent and are on my list for next time.
Drinks were just as solid. I had a Devil's IPA (or Devil's Path IPA), which stacked up surprisingly well next to my all-time favorite Jellyfish IPA. Bright citrus-forward notes with tropical fruit and a clean, balanced finish. Smooth, flavorful, and definitely packs a punch. Hot chocolate, latte, and chai latte were also great--well-balanced and not overly hot.
Atmosphere deserves a mention as well. The music playlist stood out in a good way--refreshing and different from the usual generic brunch soundtrack. Restrooms were exceptionally clean and quiet, which is always appreciated.
Overall, excellent food, attentive service, and a comfortable, well-curated atmosphere. We had a great time and will absolutely be back to explore more of the menu.
