NOLA Crawfish King Brings Barbecue and Seafood Boils to Gentilly - Eater New Orleans

"A longtime New Orleans crawfish boil caterer and food truck operator has set up a new permanent home in Gentilly, a meat market and takeout restaurant that adds smoked meats, sandwiches, and platters to his seafood boil repertoire. Chris “Shaggy” Davis and his team opened Nola Crawfish King Seafood & Barbecue on Franklin Avenue last week, and the crawfish is already boiling." - Clair Lorell

This place was absolutely amazing! Everything about it was great the food and the service. I highly recommend this spot for anyone in New Orleans and is craving BBQ!

Google
Bland crawfish and filled with celery. I paid for sausage and they forgot to put it in the bag. This is my 2nd attempt to eat crawfish from here. The first time they were covered in dirt and bland. We decided to give them another shot because it’s in the neighborhood. No flavor and I’m pretty sure that 3 or the 6 pounds I paid for was celery.

Google
Good service, very hospitable and friendly staff, small place but has adequate seating. Very homey feel. Crawfish was amazing and perfectly seasoned. The turkey neck was to die for. French fries were perfectly cooked; you can request them without seasoning if needed. Burger without the bun was delicious. Definitely will return and highly recommend.

Google
4/03/23 I don't eat crawfish but my boyfriend buys them 3-5 times a week. He was not at all happy with these crawfish he wouldn't scale them. I tried all the sides and other than the potato salad being a 4/5 this coming from someone who hates potato salad, it would be a 5/5 if it wasn't so spicy but I can't handle much of any spice. The crawfish mac and cheese and beans were a 3 to 3.5/5. The rolls I got were a 3.3/5. They have a few more things on the menu I'd like to try but I don't think I would get anything I already had again. The service was good though. Only one girl was working up front and she was nice and handled a lot of orders very well on her own.

Google
I had to come checkout this place after family brought dinner home the other night. We had the combo of brisket, ribs and pull pork. Also had a catfish combo and spicy boiled shrimp with sides of crawfish mac & cheese. It was tasty, flavorful and the meat were tender and seasoned to perfection. The portions were alot and was worth the price. I craved for it the following day and my daughter brought me so I can get another round of good food. I love their spicy Cajun boiled shrimp and crayfish Mac & Cheese. They ran out of the brisket when I got there so my suggestion is to get there when it opens.

Google
In town for the holiday it’s Sunday tired of Thanksgiving food,. Looked up food near me and they were at the top of the list with great reviews!! First off it’s 15 mins til they close so I asked are they still taking orders cause some places you go to will stop early,. She said YES So BIG + for that!! I ordered a 1/2 Shrimp 1/2 Oyster Po-Boy with fries and it was AMAZING,. Seafood seasoned to perfection good and flavorful, Not all that extra Batter which makes seafood taste nasty to me and definitely clean oil,. French Bread was soft and fresh, Food was Nice and Hot even at 6:55pm!! Cashier was Very Knowledgeable of The Menu and So Polite,. Thank you

Google
Nola Crawfish King catered our Harbor Maritime Employees Appreciation Crawfish Boil on yesterday at Mardi gras world. It was delicious!!! I can eat Crawfish for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They were seasoned to my liking not to spicy where you couldn't enjoy them. When I got there at about noon, there was no place to sit. My first round I got a little bit expecting them to be good, but to my surprise, I had to go back fir more. I'm coming your way today for more and I live on the Westbank. Thank you!!!!

Google
I saw on Instagram that they had hot boiled crawfish today! Its early in the season so I was psyched. Got dropped off and was met with the most heavenly smell from the smoker. In addition to the crawfish that I came for, I COULD have eaten myself into cardiac arrest. Burnt ends, brisket sandwich, fried pork chop with rice and beans. Shrimp, blue crabs... the crawfish were nose running and lip burningly good!!! I also had fried boudin balls that were some of the best I have ever had. This place is a gem!!!!

Yelp
O.M.G. I had Nola Crawfish Kings cater my son's high school graduation party. We had a lot of guests who traveled from out of state so I wanted to make sure the food was not just good but -- New Orleans good. Folks in my family that I consider grill masters RAVED about the BBQ. I couldn't tell that the vegan red beans were vegan. I hardly had any leftovers. Oh, and the bread pudding was insane. Food was ready on time and great customer service. I have nothing but praises!

Yelp
NOLA Crawfish King combines two of my favorite food groups with their offerings in BOTH seafood & BBQ. They also offer a notable burger which is quite a hefty example of the burger genre. NOLA Crawfish King is noted for having quickly being one of the top New Orleans BBQ restaurants and also offers an interesting selection of nice burgers and other sandwiches on top of their great seafood options. So far I have sampled the BBQ brisket, a brisket bomb, their burger, their Rueben and of course the crawfish. NOLA Crawfish King has some of the spiciest and best crawfish I've had in a long while and since Big Fisherman closed on Magazine Street the current champ of having the best seasoned crawfish in New Orleans is the NOLA Crawfish King as measured by my taste buds. Overall NOLA Crawfish King rally offers a lot of delicious food options that really deserves more recognition. My video review of NOLA Crawfish King Seafood & BBQ is here: https://youtu.be/sz45ZHjkLjs

Yelp
Gentilly!!! They're back open. I'm not sure if they're doing crawfish this season but the BBQ is delicious and worth a visit. $27 including tip I got three succulent ribs and two slices of fatty brisket, baked beans, and crispy brussel sprouts, a slice of white bread, and homemade pickles and pickled onions. Service was great. I called in my order and it was ready in about 15 minutes when I arrived. I do hope they start serving crawfish this season. I'll return and update my review if I see the sign outside.

Yelp
I tried their food at the 2022 Fried Chicken Festival and, I must say, it was delicious! The smoked chicken wings were PERFECTLY smoked while still being very moist. I'm not a huge fan of smoked food, but these were excellent. Some people smoke meat to the point of it being burnt and/or dry. Not the wings I tried! The BBQ sauce was also delicious--more on the sweet side with a tangy undertone. The crawfish macaroni and cheese was sooo creamy and flavorful. I wasn't expecting it to be that creamy since festival pasta isn't always the best lol. I could tell they put just as much effort into it at the festival that they do at their restaurant. Overall, I'd definitely be willing to visit the actual restaurant. It was easily some of the best food I tried at the festival.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice now. Both times my order was take-out. I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich and a catfish plate with crawfish Mac & fries. The service is pretty fast and the food is good. I look forward to trying more of the menu.

Yelp
Poboy bread this is exactly how you make a fish poboy with a SOFT bread not that crusty crumble bs. Crawfish Mac looks simple but the flavor ain't simple. It's simply perfect!

Yelp
I made it!!! I made it!!! I made it!!!! Knowing me is knowing I AM A CONNOISSEUR of boiled crawfish... I am the judge, jury & prosecutor!!!! I BE KNOWING about the crawfish. This establishment is new to being a brick and mortar business. However, the crawfish king has been around for a while catering private parties, being a the crawfish fest & serving crawfish from the food truck. So glad that he's finally in a permanent location where is easier to find him and I can get my crawfish on. To note: crawfish is not the only thing that they serve. They have a full menu barbecue and Boudin and a whole bunch of other stuff. But for me and my house all we are concerned about is the crawfish and that's what this review will address. This crawfish were good & to my liking... I ate every piece of it from the rooter to the tooter. I don't know what the secret sauce, I can taste a little bit a hot sauce in there but I'm not quite sure. At any rate, it's all that and a bag of chips. It's still early in the season, so the crawfish are priced a little higher than I would like for them to be, but I do expect once the season is in full swing that the crawfish prices will come down. I'm loving that they are less than 5 miles from my house, so I can get my CRAWFISH on whenever I want. And they're open on Sundays, so hello, I can grab me some crawfish and a daiquiri and head to the lake. See ya there. #locallyowned #crawfishtime #alwaysagoodtimewhereCRAWFISHareconcerned

Yelp
Hands down the BEST crawfish at a reasonable price! They also have really good shrimp and crab! Great customer service! I've never ordered any BBQ because I love their boiled crawfish BUT I'm sure their BBQ menu is as well! Cute little spot to eat in or take to go! Check them out!
google avatar

Angel A.

Yelp
The CRAWFISH!!!!! That's it! That's the review! This new gem in the city is guaranteed to be busy on a regular. Stopped by on Super Bowl Sunday with the kids for a quick snack and they did not disappoint. The shrimp were well seasoned, juicy, and easy to peel. Not to mention they were boiled to perfection! The sausage was fresh with just the right bit of spice. We also tried the "Soul Roll" which was AMAZING! Tender well seasoned bbq pork mixed with succulent Mac and cheese wrapped in a roll and then fried.... YES PLEASE! The crawfish! Perfectly seasoned, a little spice but not too much, and reasonably priced today at $5.49/lb. definitely worth it!

Yelp
Went to eat there with friends when we got der was a sign stating that they were closed but nothing was on the web site page im not going back

Yelp
Man listen. This has quickly and quietly become one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants in NOLA. I tried the food truck on Frenchman for Halloween and had the Soul Rolls and was instantly hooked. They have 3 for $10 tacos that are INSANE. The brisket egg rolls are amazing whether you get them spicy or not. And my personal all time favorite is a tie between the smoked wings and the Pastrami. Since Halloween, I've ordered here once a week. Amazing joint. -KBSr

Yelp
Took a 15min Uber ride here and it was worth it! I love the colors of the building, the side mural, and outdoor seating. It was clean and organized. Great staff, so helpful and friendly! We ordered 5lbs Crawfish, Corn, Sausage and Potatoes to start then ordered a 3 Meat Barbecue Platter w 2 sides. I also bought their brisket egg rolls and bought a few pralines too Everything was delicious!! Generous portions, great flavor and priced fairly for the food Loved this place!!
google avatar

Justin O.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I have been supporting them since their days in the food truck in the parking lot. Today was not the fist time that we've gotten crawfish where more than half of them were smashed or rotten. There needs to be a better method of storing them after cooking other than those plastic bins. The crawfish were soaking in a very smelly water. I would not recommend getting crawfish until something changes!
google avatar

Jenay J.

Yelp
The crawfish was seasoned perfectly and the employees were very sweet. My son 7 year old is looking forward to going back and so am i. There's inside and outside seating. The weather was perfect so we couldn't help but sit outside. We will definitely be returning keep up the great work

Yelp
We had been meaning to come by here for a while, since they're right down the street from some friends' house. FINALLY made it in, and we ordered a ton of food to try them out! First - crawfish. As many others have said, they got the boil just right. Not too spicy, which will be good for some folks (we like a little more spice, but they were really tasty). Some corn and potatoes too, all great. We got some BBQ as well, and everything was just delicious! The ribs were amazing, the brisket was cooked just right, and those smoked wings are AMAZING. Some sausages to round it out, they were solid. We had heard about the brisket bombs, so we grabbed two of them, as well. They live up to the hype! Really rich and filling. We tried the mac and cheese and slaw as sides, and they were also really good. In fact, their mac and cheese was one of the better I've had. We will definitely be coming through here again! There was a line when we came in, but it went pretty quick (definitely call ahead).

Yelp
Hit this place today on a five night visit to New Orleans, it was the fifth crawfish destination for me this trip but it should have been first, second, third, fourth, AND fifth. LOVED the crawfish here. Mmm, really tasty, and fun to eat, all the more so for this time of year. Can't wait to hit this place again next year, a bit earlier in the season. I come to NOLA at least once a year and I'll be taking the ride up here every time from now on. Great job, NOLA Crawfish King!

Yelp
I picked up a few pizzas at Zee's pizzeria in the same beer garden. Picked up 5 lbs for $25 at the pop-up and this crawfish WAS SO DELICIOUS. I noticed it wasn't super salty, just the right proportion of salty and sweet then noticed the orange peel in the mix. I wasn't super thirsty after eating almost 2 lbs of crawfish. It was just really delicious and perfect blend of umami. Highly recommend. Will seek them out whenever I am back in town.
google avatar

Ella A.

Yelp
We had two sandwiches plus the coleslaw and potato salad. We were very disappointed in the size and bread on the sandwiches - they are advertised as on leidenheimer bread, but are small sandwiches on what seemed to be hamburger buns. The potato salad is a more German style salad and seemed to include what tasted like crab boil seasoning. The coleslaw was okay - not a lot of mayonnaise and not sweet. We will return to support this local business, but will try the barbecue next time. We would not get the sandwiches, Cole slaw, or potato salad again - not because they were bad but because they were not to our liking.

Yelp
AWESOME CRAWFISH! Have lived in south Louisiana my whole life and these crawfish were soooo good- really well seasoned (spicy but not spicy enough that they were miserable to eat- hit that perfect middle spot) and easy to peel, even this early in the season. Loved the garlic butter too!!! Sat outside and had the best time talking and eating!! Super filling and craving more already! Will definitely be back soon and throughout the season.
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Crawfish was so good. Great size and perfectly boiled and seasoned. Perfect with a strawberry Abita.

Yelp
Shiiiit. Im 35 from Memphis and have never had BBQ that wasn't from home. I showed up today for a shrimp po boy but decided to check out previous reviews and people were raving about the BBQ so I decided to follow suit and Im so glad I did! The meat was juicy and tender! DO NOT pass this place up! The lady in front of me ordered crawfish and I swear Ill be back sometime next week for a few lbs of that too!

Yelp
I wrote the updated review a few months ago and held off posting. Today we decided to give them another shot. Nope. AGAIN- our to go order was wrong. Five times. Won't do it again despite really wanting this to work. Wrong rolls, wrong sauce tonight (asked for blue cheese - got bbq). This is a hard update to make - but the four times we have gone since the permanent brick and mortar space has opened our order has been a clusterf*^k. Missing items, completely wrong order, one completely incompetent staff member who just can't get out of her own way, and it takes at least an hour- for anything. The food is good - the aggravation isn't worth it. I know places need to work out the kinks - and good help is hard to find - but right now - they're on our "no go" list until they work it out. It's just too much drama and they try to make up for the mistakes - always - but it takes an hour + and we are not going at peak times. We Stopped by the new, permanent location at 5321 Franklin Ave. for some absolutely fantastic bbq. We had a brisket plate with potato salad and slaw, a lb. of prime brisket burnt ends that were da bomb, an order of brisket boudin rolls and an order of the soul rolls. All of it was spot on. The white sauce for the boudin rolls and the bbq sauce (obviously served on the side) were excellent compliments to the rolls. The brisket had a beautiful smoke ring, the meat was cooked tender but not mush, and the flavor profile allowed the natiral flavor of the meat to shine through. The burnt ends were some of the best I've had in New Orleans. A few fatty pieces a few lean pieces and some combo pieces. Again, the meat was the star - not the rub or salt, which is what I find happens a lot. Right now Shaggy is building out the permanent space and has his food truck in the parking area right next to the space. Hours are basically Wednesday - Saturday from 11am until the bbq is gone. You can call ahead to place an order - but the wait time if you just roll on over there is very reasonable. It's a great addition to the neighborhood. Hopes are that the permanent space will be open late fall....nothing but goodness.

Yelp
This is the most amazing hole-in-the-wall, local gem in NOLA! The food was so delicious! I had to come back before flying back home. I also really enjoyed chatting with the nice lady working the cash register! She was so sweet, and we gave each other travel tips for our respective states. I don't know what they do to their potato salad, but it's addicting! I think there's probably a lot of dijon mustard in it? I'm unsure. The mac and cheese was good too. However, the crawfish stole the show. They were so fresh and big for such a good price! I wish I had more time in NOLA so that I could try more of their foods. Will definitely come back if I'm ever visiting again. Keep up the great job you guys! :)

Yelp
Wanted to try this place today. The outside is very eye appealing and the inside is very clean and nice. O ordered the smoked wings. They were delicious. Just enough smoke and the meat came away from the bone so easy. You have to try Soul Sauce for dip it was quite good even for my boiled shrimp. Ordered 2 pounds of boiled shrimp they were boiled perfect and a great flavor not too spicy with lots of flavor. Great news place!!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Crawfish water smelled and taste sour. I called to inform the business but to no avail there was no one to talk to about the smelly sour juice of the boil.

Jason S.

Yelp
Crawfish wasn't seasoned it at all it was regular boiled crawfish with no salt or seasoning no garlic celery taste at all
google avatar

Yelp
This review is really for the service. My husband placed an online order. When we went to pick it up, they said that their internet was down and hadn't received it. They said it would be refunded the next day (it never was) and that he could just order there. They forgot about the replacement order, and he waited there for over half an hour. So in total, we waited for almost an hour. To make up for it, they gave us free crawfish, I asked my husband why they didn't just comp some of our meal, and he said it wasn't offered. We had to give away the crawfish to our neighbors because we already had the food we'd paid for twice. I was really hoping this would be a place to go back to in the neighborhood, but the fact that they never refunded our online order was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Haley P.

Yelp
If you want some unique crawfish that is jam packed with flavor, this is your spot. The Vietnamese style crawfish is one of the best seafood items I have ever eaten. The normal flavor is also amazing, with just enough spice. Egg rolls are fun and huge! You definitely have to check it out!
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Locals and visitors line up at both the brick and mortar and the food truck. Nicely seasoned crawfish, amazing brisket, no frills except where it counts, THE FOOD!! Yum!

Corey B.

Yelp
I'm from Texas, I went here after a night out and tried the egg rolls. The staff were pleasant and the food was great. They offered good eats, courteous service, and made feel welcomed to NOLA. We saw the saints game the next day, I had them on my mind.

jeanne F.

Yelp
I was a real cheerleader for this place until last night. I ordered two soft shell crab "platters". Got all the way home opened the boxes (of 90 some dollars worth of food). Company at the table..... and the "platters" had the tiniest little crab inside. ONE tiny crab per platter! I called ahead and was told a mistake was made. Ran back there leaving my guests at the table. Only to be confronted with more excuses than apologies. I was shown what a platter "should" look like complete with two crabs and a slice of French bread (this wasn't given to me though). I had to wait (even though I'd now called ahead twice) My grand reward was three more tiny crabs in a box by themselves. Whoopee I missed half of my own dinner party, drove back and forth twice because of your mistake and I received a bunch of excuses and an extra crab the size of the ketchup container. Last time you'll get my money. I can go right next door and expect great service at Fiorellas for now

Jonny R.

Yelp
Warm welcome upon entering! Crispy ass house made pastrami on the Reuben! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding customer service! Will definitely be using NCK as my go to supplier for live crawfish!
google avatar

Cheyenne S.

Yelp
I see why their called the crawfish king...their crawfish is good, as well their other seafood fixxings. Now. I tried their boudin ball and it was good. I only tried their seafood but I wanna try their bbq food next.
google avatar

Dr K.

Yelp
Oh my. When you walk in you are met with the warm embrace of crawfish boil seasoning, but not the fishy smell of shellfish that has had time to cool down. I'm allergic to shellfish and that smell made me seriously consider how good my HMO is, because, I mean, damn. Smelled so good. Had smoked meats to go and the "bombs." Boudin and brisket bombs are some of the best things I've ever eaten. I can't describe them, you just have to try them. Good cracklins, too!

Ty L.

Yelp
Burnt & hard!! i almost lost a tooth biting into these & they are selling these at $20 a pound!!! this is ridiculous because you can see how old & burned these are, why would you still serve it? also, the crawfish tastes like salted water, do not recommend!
google avatar

Marshall C.

Yelp
First thing you want with a caterer is quality food. Shaggy and his crew delivered. We hosted a shrimp & crab boil with gumbo for 25 out of town guests and the food was loved by all. Great flavor, just the right spice. The service on the day of the boil was fantastic. Chris set us up, kept things loose and made us feel like he wanted our boil to be a success. Kelly stayed on all night and was there for everything we needed. He went above and beyond to make sure our guests enjoyed themselves. Not a critique, more of a heads up, the planning communication is a little sparse. They delivered on EVERYTHING we asked for but there were times I wonder if they would. I won't doubt them again.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! Their online ordering is so easy, and the food is ridiculous!

Shawn M.

Yelp
OMGGGG !!!!! I can't say ENOUGH about this place ! The crawfish was HANDS DOWN THE BEST I EVER HAD !! The customer service was perfect. I was introduced by a woman named Tae or Tay but her energy was so welcoming ! I recommend this place to everyone and I promise to be back ! The crawfish was perfect, the boiled shrimp was perfect & potatoes and corn were on point !! Keep up the great work, I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
What a dick. I would give less stars if I could. For someone from New Orleans he's rude, condescending, communicates very poorly and just plain didn't show up after booking him. Shaggy is not a reliable person and I would suggest getting crawfish anywhere else before this guy. Don't be duped, Shaggy lacks integrity.

Rai G.

Yelp
The crawfish were flavorful but the corn I had was not so much. I picked up 5lbs and was somewhat disappointed. It was full of tiny crawfish, separated pieces, and a bunch of claws. Tried them because they were nearby but I may go elsewhere in the future.

Eric F.

Yelp
Tried their brick and mortar for the first time and it's a awesome! The place looks great and even has some umbrella covered tables outside if you wanna eat there. Awesome menu whether you're looking for seafood or bbq. Tried the Neville sandwich, brisket sandwich and the brisket bomb egg rolls- all freaking delicious. The crawfish is fire, just like it always is at their pop ups all over town.

Leila H.

Yelp
This place is simply the best! The crawfish, crabs, brisket and boudin balls are all amazing. Order it all, thank me later.
google avatar

Brad G.

Yelp
A group of friends and I ordered 14lbs of shrimp for a boil at noon. They agreed upon price for 14lbs was $575. They showed up at 1030 and brought 10 lbs. and did not mention a thing until we told the guy there is no way it is 14 lbs. He agreed with us and said management would handle it. Someone contacted us and said they only sent us 10 lbs (which I do not believe was even anywhere near 10 lbs) and they would knock $25 off the price. I cannot comprehend how 14 lbs is $575 and 10 lbs is $550. How is that proportional at all?? My recommendation is to go with another service as their company is a joke

Brion T.

Yelp
So I'm giving this place 3 stars. The crawfish is affordable, one of the best prices I've seen thus far. However they weren't that great to me. The shrimp were also just okay. Kinda bland. I didn't have any bbq but I did get the swamp egg roll & that was delicious. My true New Orleans tastebuds just needed more spice.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
Simply put - there is no one better in the business. A group of 12 of us came to New Orleans this past weekend to celebrate my buddy's bachelor party and we wanted a unique experience that would gave us a true taste of New Orleans and its great food. Although Shaggy was out of town - his friend Cory hosted a Shrimp and Crab boil for us in his yard (coincidentally the same place Shaggy hosts his boils for Jazz Fest) . The set up was so sick and it provided a great place in the evening to chill, pig out, and enjoy our Keg. Cory was a spectacular boil master and a great person to hang out with. There literally is no reason not to have a boil hosted by the Crawfish King. The Jambalaya was honestly that best we've ever had - we ended up taking the leftovers not only for late night, but for lunch the next day as well. My buddy told me the boil was one of his favorite parts of the trip and I can't help but agree. When/if I'm ever down in New Orleans again you better bet another boil will be in the plan. I've already recommended it to friends considering New Orleans for a bachelor party or if they are ever down with a big group.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
If you're looking for a professional company for your event, this is definitely the company! We hired NOLA Crawfish King and I'm so glad we did. Our boiler, Austin reported to our home early to start the boil in order for us to eat on time. My family and I love Austin! He gave us a brief tutorial on how to eat fresh Louisiana crab and sat around to provide assistance to all. Thanks to this company for providing excellent service.
google avatar

Penelope G.

Yelp
Chris/shaggy was amazing! He got here on time and brought everything he cleaned up and left on time. The food was fabulous and plentiful.
google avatar

Zack A.

Yelp
Chris and his team, especially Karen, hooked up our bachelor party with an amazing spread of crawfish, jambalaya, pulled pork and sides. Everything was delicious and Chris couldn't have been more helpful in getting us set up.

Yelp
What an awesome party! We had a bunch of Canadians in town for our wedding and Shaggy cooked up a perfect boil for our rehearsal and even taught them how to peel the shrimp and crab! Highly recommend for a large, affordable and fun party experience!
