North Shore Cafe Review - Big Bear - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The thing most people don’t realize about Big Bear is that there is a whole other side of the lake. What the north side might lack in ski resorts and Sizzlers, it makes up for with giant rental homes, great views, and the sleepy little town of Fawnskin. And in the center of Fawnskin is North Shore Cafe. The all-day roadside diner has been around for decades and serves a solid breakfast as well as sandwiches, burgers, and salads during the day. If you’re looking for an unaffected Big Bear experience devoid of all tourists, a quick lunch at North Shore Cafe is a must." - Brant Cox

Very beautiful boat ride on an almost full lake on a wonderful day! The MiniMe pontoon boat was fast enough to tour everything in two hours. The horn and radio didn't work however...

We were really looking forward to the Pirate Ship ride with our children and our friends. I’d read all the reviews and it sounded really fun. Unfortunately, we left 20 minutes late after they told us our captain didn’t show up. Even though we left 20 minutes late, it ended promptly as scheduled which means we got a 70 minute boat ride instead of 90 minutes. The captain and helpers were not dressed up as pirates like I’d read in so many reviews. There was not a single joke told, and no mention of pirates on the ride. Also, no canons. The 2 crew helpers did not speak to us the entire ride and were mostly on their phones. It seems as though Captain John makes this a great trip and since he wasn’t there, those that filled in were not prepared to make it a memorable pirate experience. I’m guessing our experience is unique since the captain didn’t show up and we had a last minute fill in. Extremely disappointed.

The people at North Shore Landing were amazingly patient and kind with answering questions both on the phone before coming in and while I was there with my two young kids. My daughter got cold feet when it was time to hop on the wave runner and Tammy and the guys who work there were so kind with handling that. They made our trip out so much fun and memorable.

I'm always looking for fun and new adventures and very positive even if things don't always go the best. If it wasn't for the staff offering a refund, I'm sure this review would've been a much less positive experience than we had. We rented their Power Boat, very similar to what I have down in the city, same Horse Power at 90hp. The boat definitely didn't appear very well maintained and dirty. It may have been sitting a while with the big spider cobweb staff tried to discreetly wipe away from the steering column area. As they were showing us there boat, she asked if we would like to check that the boat prop is okay. She tried to lift motor up with the buttons, but the motor lift wasn't working, should have been our 1st sign. Never able to do prop check. This was literally the slowest boat on the lake, slower than the slowest pontoon out there. This type of boat, should be able to get up and go! I honestly don't feel this vessel should have been available for public use at all. We were not able to plane out in the boat mostly due to the cavity between floor and hull completely full of water. I figured the bilge pump would kick in, that thing did not work. Seats were torn up, gauge cluster fell out during a wake crossing, approx 6' of rubber bumper on one side of boat just hanging off, stainless steel staples on floor of boat that fell out from seat cushions(didn't realize that till 2 of us stepped on them barefooted). This was the first time a couple nephews and my niece were on a boat. We made the best of it and tried to still show the kids a good time. Fortunately, this was their 1st time. Staff mentioned that they personally don't ever recommend anyone to rent the Power Boat. Mentioned it had been like this for 10 years, I have a hard time believing this considering I own a very similar boat and it moves pretty quick. They mentioned that their pontoons are the best on the lake. Cannot confirm or deny that. We were refunded our money completely and were offered a substantial discount to come back. Great! We'll come back tomorrow we said. They were going to send us an email with the discount, but email never arrived. Figured that would happen, since they were busy on that Saturday. So we enjoyed the many other great places around. The Staff was great, helpful and accommodating. Would have been nice to have somewhere to sit in shade while we were waiting. We were told as we were loaded on the boat that no swimming is allowed outside of boat, they also don't want you to anchor boat or tie up to any other boats. Would I recommend this place? Absolutely. This may seem expensive, but try actually owning a boat. Much less expensive way to go. It would be great to see this facility do some upgrades to the property and their rentals. They could use a new roof, so get there and rent a pontoon. I would suggest a minimum of 2 hours, 4 hours even better!

The staff was extremely kind and helpful, and the boats were fairly priced. We rented a fishing pontoon for 2 hours and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We will definitely be back!

I went for my birthday. I had a great time. I would have liked to hear a bit more history and more up beat music and less pirate music. I loved the views. Drinks were a bit pricey but it went with the experience. Kids loved it. We packed a picnic and had lunch at the little park by the marina. We had a blast playing tether ball.

We had an amazing experience and was decently priced. Our group booked the night before for a three hour Saturday excursion. We couldn’t have asked for a more comfortable Pontoon and fun experience. The staff was very kind and helpful even when it was busy. Highly recommend and look forward to a future visit to Big Bear so we can do this again.

The Tiki Tour Boat is gorgeous! I felt like I was cruising the South Pacific. Nice bar, plenty of room to walk around and see the lake, good drinks, fantastic music - just a fabulous experience!
