8 Nostalgic Spots Within An Hour's Drive Of NYC

"If all of your weekends are starting to bleed into one, maybe it’s time for a nautical-themed escape. We know a spot in the not-so-distant maritime village of Northport, Long Island. It’s called The Shipwreck Diner, and while it used to be the dining car of a trolley, for the past hundred years, it’s been a destination for eggs and hash. Sit across from a friend or significant other in a cozy, ocean-blue booth, drink a root beer float, and enjoy an impeccable turkey club in the old-timey room that looks like a sailboat." - bryan kim, molly fitzpatrick, willa moore, will hartman

Shipwreck Diner Review - Northport - Long Island - The Infatuation

"In 1924, the former dining car of a trolley was rolled down Northport’s Main Street, becoming what’s now known as the Shipwreck Diner. It’s changed hands a few times over the past century, but the restaurant is still a magical place where the front door creaks, the fries are golden, and the service is swift and familiar. Appropriately, the dining room looks like the interior of an old sailboat, with ocean blue booths, rope-wrapped stools, and glossy wood paneling. It’s entirely possible that the charming decor makes the food taste better, but even without all the chalkboard signs, Shipwreck’s corned beef hash and turkey club would still be hall of fame-worthy. photo credit: Bryan Kim photo credit: Bryan Kim photo credit: Bryan Kim Food Rundown photo credit: Bryan Kim Triple Decker Turkey Textbook execution. Fresh turkey, crisp romaine, smoky bacon, thick slices of tomato—it’s everything you look for in a club. If you need gluten-free bread, you should know that theirs is fantastic. photo credit: Bryan Kim Corned Beef Hash Crisped on a griddle, the corned beef hash is heavy on the beef. Enjoy it with a side of butter-soaked toast." - Bryan Kim

15 minute wait for brunch on a Sunday at 9:30 am. This was the best breakfast/brunch we've had in ages. My wife had the Crab cakes Eggs Benedict and I had the Grilled Reuben. OMG! IT WAS AMAZING! our server was delightful and everything was top notch. I highly recommend!!!

Google
Went with about 11 friends. Servers were quick and friendly. Food was overall good, but your sausage gravy needs sage. Biscuits and gravy are made with sage sausage, but it was good otherwise. Everybody enjoyed their meals too.

Google
Amazing service and atmosphere, would come here again. The French toast was ok, the sandwich was quite good. The service really made up for any faults though, we felt cared for.

Google
Great breakfast spot in the middle of Northport village. Lunch too but we love their breakfasts. Dog friendly. renovated by Ty Pennington. Highly recommend you sit outside. They have a covered patio as well as tables by the pond in the back. Everything is delicious. Cash only!

Google
Incredible homemade cornered beef hash eggs Benedict I ever had anywhere. The new owner Denis and his staff particularly Tammy couldn't be more friendly. Highly recommend. Chocolate shake was the best I ever had and the corned beef hash is so good all homemade. Theytreat you with such kindness Tammy brought out a toy box for my friends son to choose 2 toys.it doesn't get any better than this on Long Island or anywhere.

Google
Was so nice and delicious, the breakfast egg Benedict was so good, but the service perfect starting with the host and the waiters, and near the place you can enjoy a short walk to the pier😊💯

Google
This place has great food and very friendly staff, great spot to stop and eat before you watch the views of the water or continue your shopping. The only reason I put 4 stars for atmosphere was the noise if you are seated close to the kitchen in the front. Otherwise very nice place and I will be dining again!!

Google
Ordered biscuits and gravy, and maybe I should have known better this far north. Biscuits were NOT soft and fluffy, though better than the hard dry things I normally find on Long Island. Gravy was a pile of surprisingly pale, bland sausage in a puddle of what tasted and looked like milk. Eggs were good, and preserves on cornbread were great.

Yelp
Best corned beef hash I've ever eaten. Marion's blintzes were fabulous. It's a must have breakfast spot. The crew is also awesome.

Yelp
Food is great and service is awesome Great spot in Northport village. Just get there early because it gets packed quickly...

Yelp
Still the best breakfast. Home cooking! Great service and ambiance. Very big menu. It can get a bit crowded on the weekends so get here early. Cash only.

Yelp
I love the Shipwreck so much, and have been coming here since I was a little kid. After Tim retired I was skeptical at first, but was delighted to find that the new owner is dedicated to preserving the spirit, food, and feel of the Shipwreck-- and doing a great job! As always, they give you some delicious corn bread and homemade berry jam to start. My all time favorite thing to get is the half sandwich and soup combo. The chicken noodle soup is always so warm, hearty, and not too salty; and the chicken salad melt is the perfect cross between a grilled cheese and chicken salad sandwich! It comes with a scoop of macaroni salad too, which is the best around. This is a great deal for a perfect lunch portion, and it hits the spot every time. Besides the food, the wood paneling, old timey photos of northport, and long dining car layout inside are so nostalgic for me, and really add something special when compared to the other chrome and mirrored diners on Long Island. Ultimately, no matter how much Main Street may change, I know that the Shipwreck will always be here to welcome me back.

Yelp
Great diner! Somehow I had never been here before! Staff are really friendly and attentive. Food was excellent. I was happy to be able to have grits available AND they make their own jam which is delicious . Lots of good items on the menu. There are booths in the front dining room and if you continue walking, there is an outdoor covered dining area in the back. And they don't rush you, however , when I left, there was a line and a wait to get in at lunchtime!

Yelp
We stopped here for brunch on our day trip to Northport! It was busy around 1 PM and we waited about 15 minutes for our table. The portion sizes here are ENORMOUS so keep that in mind! + the "wreakfast" burrito: think of a breakfast burrito but with eggs benedict sauce, sounds delicious right? was definitely yummy and very filling! + chocolate chip pancakes: standard pancakes but SUPER fluffy! the pancakes were super big as well. Overall, the food here is worth the price and very filling!

Yelp
Service and Food were excellent. I've been coming to this diner since Otto took over in the early 70's. Although it's always been good, the new owner has stepped up the Menu Selections, Food Quality and Service. ‍‍‍‍‍

Yelp
Love love love everything about this diner ! First thing that catches you is the cornbread pieces and homemade berry jelly presented at your table when you are seated . Yes , homemade berry jelly ! The menu is amazing, breakfast served all day ! I am a big fan of their corned beef hash. It is the real deal, not from a can. That is very rare these days. Any breakfast platter I have ordered, I leave out so satisfied and full. Eggs are never served greasy, and the home fries that you come with breakfast are soft inside, crispy outside. If you are a foodie and a lover of breakfast sandwiches, then the Siegel Sandwich is the one for you to order. Two eggs, bacon and cheese on a large toasted croissant served with home fries. It is such a delicious and large sandwich very easy to share. All around here gives you the feel of what diners used to feel like. Like you are part of a community and welcome. The service is great and do the employees hustle. Parking is really tough over here so we prepared, especially on weekends. You can expect to wait online for a table, but they do move fast and also they have outdoor dining in the back . So glad that Northport has this staple and its community.

Yelp
In the charming village of Northport, NY, there's a place where the clock hands seem to spin a little slower, and the welcome is as warm as the soup. The Shipwreck Dinner is not just a local eatery. It's a time capsule that captures the essence of a bygone era, a place that cherishes the slow and steady rhythm of a close-knit community. From the moment you step inside, The Shipwreck Dinner envelops you in an ambiance that whispers of yesteryears -- a time when everyone knew your name and your favorite dish. The air is rich with the aroma of simmering soups, each batch lovingly prepared to perfection. As a soup aficionado myself, I can attest to the fact that their offerings are nothing short of amazing. The heart and soul of The Shipwreck Dinner is, without a doubt, owner Dennis and his dedicated staff. Dennis, with his ever-present smile and genuine affection for his clientele, sets the tone for the establishment. He's more than just an owner. He's the captain of a ship where every passenger is treated like family. His passion for the restaurant and the people it serves is evident in every interaction, fostering an atmosphere that's as comforting as the food. The staff's commitment to their work is palpable -- they move with a purpose and a joy that can only come from people who truly love what they do. Their approach to service is personal, attentive, and imbued with the kind of care that can only be found in a place where employees are there because they choose to be, not just because they have to be. The Shipwreck Dinner is a treasure of Northport, a reminder of the times when meals were savored, conversations lingered, and the community was at the heart of every business. It's a place where you can shake off the cold rush of the modern world and bask in the warmth of good food and even better company. For anyone searching for a meal that satisfies the stomach and the soul, The Shipwreck Dinner is the perfect port of call. It's a restaurant that proves that some places can withstand the tides of time, offering a harbor of delicious nostalgia to anyone who walks through its welcoming doors.

Yelp
Visited with 3 co-eaters. Place is great. . . service was efficient and complete - never wanted for anything. Food was very hearty, cooked perfectly and as described. It's a busy little place so not one to hang out for long since people are waiting for tables, but definitely a great place overall!

Yelp
Taken over by a new owner. Who has managed to keep the Small town, local feel, while continuing to serve great flavored and fresh food. Of course the staff is on top of everything making sure things are "just right" Always great service. Dog friendly

Yelp
Over the past decades this place remains a back to basics, down to earth, Hometown local spot for excellent breakfast, lunch as well as desserts, hot cocoa(whipped cream) and deliciously piping hot coffee and tea. Parking is ample, people are outta this world professional, welcoming, nice and speedy. You'll never leave hungry from this quaint little hidden gem int he center of a beautiful Long Island Harbor Town. They were featured sometime ago on a restaurant makeover and boy it is rustic, beautiful, accessible and delightful for a day trip with family, friends or just you and the dog! There is beautiful out doors seating out back. They were wiping down tables, chairs etc and washing their hands! It was refreshing to see a neighborhood gem still here in this beautiful little town. Oh and by the way they have amazing selections! A must visit when on Long Island -

Yelp
Great place. The service was great, everyone happy to be there. Great diner food, and very quick times. Our meals were really good, especially the onion rings and croissant sandwich. The back area is a great spot.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Went there for Mother's Day and in which they provided a single rose to the moms at the table which was so lovely. Friendly staff and good food.

Yelp
Love this place and so will you. Quaint cozy diner in beautiful downtown Northport. Everything on the menu is delicious. They give you a little complementary piece of homemade cornbread with jam to start. We had French toast with bacon and I had yummy grilled cheese sandwich with Mac salad and pickles accompanied by a cup of chicken noodle soup which was chockfull of noodles and chicken very flavorful. You always get greeted by one of the staff and everyone is just so nice and friendly and attentive. Fun place to go .

Yelp
I really love this dinner! After googling numerous dinners and looking over the reviews, I really loved the history about this dinner! I love old school dinners with great history and a great track record of serving good food. I came here with my girl friend and we both loved it here. It had that old school vibe and the hostess was a sweet heart. Came here on a Saturday around 12, and there was a lil wait. The also have a back area all the way in the back which I loved. The back area isn't in the actual dinner, but a great option if you just want a grab food and don't mind not being in the actual dinner. Great food and great drinks here, my girl friend wanted the gravy and biscuits but unfortunately it was sold out so she went with boring pancakes. I got the corn beef has egg Benedict that was amazing. So flavorful and and cooked to perfection. Great food and service and I will definitely be back. This dinner is amazing and I just love the tow of north port. Theirs so many great things to do after and it's located by a marina with a beautiful park. It's great for nicer weather parks walks. Also a lot of great lil shopping areas and a great brewery a few stores down from this dinner. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back! This dinner is 10 out 10 and a great diner.

Yelp
Haven't been here since the change of owners, but seems that everything is just as good as it was. My daughter and I sat outside at her request, dreading it because it was 90 degrees that day, but the outdoor area had ample shade and umbrellas at the table so it was actually very pleasant and a super cute area. We had the biscuits and gravy to start which we both loved (she's a super picky eater so I was happy she loved it). I had a Muenster cheese omelette and home fries which was good, and she had the waddlesticks which was cut up French toast sticks that she enjoyed. Only vice is that their coffee is really terrible for my liking. I drink black coffee and their roast has like a very citrusy undertone which is my least favorite, but that's more of a personal preference than a criticism. Server was very nice. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
First time here from Los Angeles, definitely a great diner , warm welcome , pet friendly, hospitable staff and delicious food . Kudos to everyone.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
Always go here for breakfast. They start you free of charge, with a hot piece of cornbread. Eggs and red potatoes cooked to perfection. Great place.

Paul S.

Yelp
Gotta love the Shipwreck, especially for breakfast. They just do it old school right!

Cee B.

Yelp
This was the best diner food I've eaten in decades! Everything was delicious, fresh, plentiful and served super fast! I appreciated the friendly and personable service of our waitress and hostess. I highly recommend the homemade corned beef hash (which is hard to find anywhere) and the fluffy, banana walnut pancakes! Top it all off with a clean, comfy, ship-themed atmosphere and very reasonable prices and we'll be coming back soon!
google avatar

Nick F.

Yelp
Overall, IMO just ordinary, But Tim's saved the day today because it was the only place that allowed me to dine with my precious Maltipoo Zoey. I enjoyed a Turkey Club, which was just fine except it came with white bread yet I asked fro whole wheat. My other half was in the mood for pancakes, it was a huge portion that she enjoyed but could not finish. Service o/k, comfortable heated seating at the back patio. Old fashioned landmark diner, a little strange being cash only and having to use the ATM that's on site so Tim's gets a 2.99 fee for its use. The fourth star is for being pet friendly.
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
Traditions continue at this beloved town diner! First time dining since there was a change in ownership and I honestly wouldn't have known, had I not known! Same faces, excellent service and delicious hot coffee with plenty of refills! I finally tried the famous cheese blintzes and they were as perfect as everyone says- asked for "well done" as my waitress suggested so I could enjoy the crispy buttery edges. The yummy jam was just as remembered (all tables still get the homemade jam and cornbread once you order) and the blintzes are not overly sweet so you do not feel you're eating a dessert for breakfast. They are honestly plump, warm and heavenly- with or without the sides of jam and whipped cream. My friend loved the avocado toast with 2 perfectly cooked poached eggs on the side. The fruit was fresh and delicious. There is good reason to continue to love this local landmark!
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
Great food and what a cute little diner tucked away in Northport . Reasonable pricing with big portions. They also have outside seating. I got a flight of mimosas it hit the spot. No liquor , beer and wine only .
google avatar

Alejandro A.

Yelp
Pretty good! The Diner resembles the inside of a ship, somewhat tight quarters. They also have a patio. The food came out pretty fast and was good too. I got the surf n turf eggs Benedict.

Don W.

Yelp
Went there with my wife and son yesterday 8/21/24). Nice waiter, but terrible service. Got an omelette w asparagus ham and cheddar. Ordered soft. Came out well done, cold, and toast cold. No one ever came back to check on us. Very long wait to get food in first place. Will never come back

Yelp
Awesome place! I came here with my dad and my 4 sisters one Saturday morning for brunch. We had to wait a little bit but it was no big deal! The town was lovely. Dad got the diner breakfast (fine/10) - typical! But he was always a traditional guy. Loves his pastrami. Our waitress was Kendall, she's an absolute doll! My sisters got Nutella pancakes (but they gave her french toast by accident 7/10), breakfast quiche (9/10), poached eggs (8.5/10), and an omelette (7/10). I got the avocado toast. #trendy 4/10 We got an order of biscuits and gravy to share. 8/10 Chocolate pancakes for the table. 8.065/10 It was windy but Kendall served us like a #breeze! Will I be back? Perhaps. Won't be getting the avo toast but I totally want to try other menu items. Cool staff, beautiful town, amazing service, and good food. #LiveLaughLove Update: THEY GOT US CORNBREAD?! We're full but we had it anyway. Kendall SLAYED. 10/10

maria s.

Yelp
I went there for lunch on father's day. Service is good. Food is tasty, a little overpriced, drinks ok. . It's a nice view of the Bay.

Lyle W.

Yelp
Great location but that is where it stops as far as the good, rude hostess greets you in a unwelcoming way which is the opposite of what you would want....after a long wait the end result is a meal one could get at a bad bad diner....next time we'll try Copenhagen which is way better

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Not your average diner. With southern options, seasonal specials, & delicious specialties this place always hits the spot. It looks small but they have a big indoor patio & even bigger outdoor. They give you the most delicious cornbread & homemade berry jam upon arriving. I was really disappointed today because that's the reason I went, it was 11:30 and she said they ran out by now and that happens in the winter. It's a pretty warm day in October & 11:00 in the morning. Other than that I'm always really pleased when I go here regardless!
google avatar

Casey T.

Yelp
Food was mediocre if even that, service was pretty poor. Everyone was friendly and nice, but it was impossible to actually get anybody to help you. Whether they were overwhelmed, understaffed, new/young servers, whatever it was. Didn't get water until my food is already there. Soup actually served after the grilled cheese was brought to the table. Forget about coffee, and we were right next to the service station. Who is not buried in the table at the back, I asked for, mayo and hot sauce, never came. Had to ask several different people throughout the time we were sitting. Love Northport and there are plenty of better options.

Susan B.

Yelp
Food is honest home made FRESH. Staff very customer oriented and friendly. Love the old fashioned railroad feeling!
google avatar

Erik M.

Yelp
Fantastic little diner in a quaint town! Will certainly go back there! Highly highly recommend
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
A funny run diner with good food, i was impressed by chicken sandwich that came nice and hot, freshly crunchy chicken. I appreciated the honey mustard on the side! The waitress took my order of fries but forgot about them, and then remembered them a little late but it was ok! I'm not a horrifically mean person! wasn't a big deal. They're always busy on the weekends, especially on sunny days so let them take your name over the phone.

Trudy A.

Yelp
Nice selection of good comfort food, with good attentive waitstaff. A cozy local diner!

William N.

Yelp
Great breakfast! Fast and very kind women and men running this joint. Very family friendly ambiance and made my morning!
google avatar

Yelp
How have I gone this long without reviewing Tim's? This place is an absolute staple, and it's earned that title. The food is absolutely great. My favorite things I've ever eaten there are their blintzes and lobster roll. Either are absolutely worth the trip to go get. Plus the restaurant gives you two different vibes, which I love. Inside, you're getting old school diner. Counter, booths, wood walls, the whole nine. But outside is such a cute garden patio. You can't go wrong either way.
google avatar

Penelope E.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast spot ever! My family has been coming here since we moved to Northport 4 years ago and always have a great experience. The service is amazing no matter who your server is, and it's always nice to see a familar face when you walk through the door! This past weekend we got lucky enough to dine outside on their beautiful patio with Courtney as our waitress and she was incredibly attentive and friendly. Highly recommend any of their eggs benedict and the biscuits and gravy are to DIE for! Any time I have family in from out of town we bring them in for breakfast -- this place can't miss!!!
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Don't know why I've never been here it's an institution in Northport. Well they have outside dining and it's now allowed and I had an extra day off so I went. Well first off it was so good to eat out!! boy how I've been waiting. Now the important facts, they're an institution for a reason, the food is so good! They serve breakfast all day, I think they close at 3, plus they have all sorts of sandwiches, salads burgers etc. We started with a mimosa flight 5 kinds sorry I don't remember all the flavors but they were all good! I got a Reuben sandwich very good and juicy, their onion rings are the BEST. Battered and golden brown and crispy. The staff is super friendly, the outdoor area is really nice. Bring cash that's all the accept. I'm so going back!

Yelp
COVID REVIEW: The cool thing about this Diner is the fact that it is in an alley with plenty of outdoor seating. Came here around 8AM on a brisk weekday morning after a walk along the park/water. We were seated right away, and there was a decent amount of people. All tables are more than 6 ft apart, and all the staff was wearing masks! This is not a typical Diner, that only serves burgers, eggs and pancakes. They had various food options and specials all of which looked delicious. I opted for an egg white omelet with a side of turkey bacon in place of home fries, and a hot coffee (FYI the hot coffee is free refills). My mom opted for a special salmon/lox plate that came with a bagel and all the fixings. Our food came out promptly, although the bacon came out a bit late, which was fine because I was eating my toast in the meantime. Our waitress was very nice and attentive to us. Our foods were both delicious and generous portions. The best part about this spot is the very reasonable pricing! Can't wait to come back here to try their lunch menu! FYI: there is plenty of parking near the park/water area.

Yelp
Tims is good! It's not gimmicky; it's exactly what you would expect it to be. It's simple diner food. The jam is delicious, as is the cornbread. It's a great place to stop in for simple, good food.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
On a Sunday morning I guess we got lucky and there was no wait to get a seat. Lovely little place. Great vibe. Breakfast was great as well.
google avatar

Cheryl G.

Yelp
This took me back years! Cash only, old school and great breakfast food. Good service with no frills. Def check it out if you'd like a laid back and chill breakfast spot!
google avatar

Juliana G.

Yelp
As a Northport local, i was so disappointed with my latest visit to Tim's. Arrived on a Saturday morning, and of course it was busy, but put my name on the list to wait 30 minutes. Walked around the park a little, and when I returned the host happily seated me and my party inside. We sat in the booth for 20 minutes. A server never greeted us, we were never given water or served. Many servers passed us and looked at us, but no one waited on us. We then decided to leave. Disappointed to say the least
google avatar

Yelp
Food 15/10 - service 30/10 First off- I'm a southerner and I love love LOVE me some cornbread and as soon as I sat down I had a plate of cornbread handed to me, so I knew I would love this place. Best breakfast I've had on Long Island. Ordered the Huevos Rancheros and bf got the skirt steak breakfast. Both were absolutely fantastic! Also, they have MIMOSA FLIGHTS... made just right with 95% bubbles and 5% juice and it was only $15 Janet made the entire experience even better! Cant wait to come back!
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
My coworker and I stopped by this place for lunch. The menu does not lie: this really is one of the best burgers I had in Long Island! I got the Fat Albert and it was so good. They were able to cook the meat exactly as you want and the service was excellent too. Overall, a five out of five especially for a workplace lunch visit!
google avatar

Soriana M.

Yelp
This is one of the cleanest restaurants/diners I've ever eaten. It's wonderful that the jam is homemade and delicious. Service was wonderful, a Great breakfast. Will definitely come back soon.

Josh H.

Yelp
Mediocre food and pretty disagreeable wait staff. I brought a friend from overseas for a taste of Americana. I wa told not to order anything other than breakfast because their food is nothing special. We had two eggs Sunnyside up and hash browns. Hash browns were the best part of the meal. It was a Friday around 11am and we stayed until 12:15 when we were promptly told "we need the table, you should take your coffee to go". Mind your there was no line when we left and two empty tables inside and many outside. I was embarrassed for my American countrymen but I guess I gave my friend a real taste of the NY hospitality. I spoke to the manager who seemed less concerned. So, if you want, fast, gruff and mediocre food, it is the only show this close to the water.

Yelp
Hard to believe this place is still open. A testament to people's stupidity The worlds Worse service. Like they hired the dumbest teenagers and family members they could Find and set them Loose Over priced waiting forever having to ask for everything from milk to sugar Only the bill came without me asking And what's with this cash only bullshit and the atm charges you 3 bucks. Fucking disgraceful Time should have his bald cut off and put on the menu
