Denver’s Essential Breweries Right Now, Spring 2023

"Though two of its three owners hail from the Dominican Republic and Israel, respectively, local pride is in Novel Strand’s DNA: Not only does it share a Baker space with Queen City Collective Coffee, but it regularly works with Colorado ingredients, features collaborations with other area breweries, and so on. Especially charming recent examples include the Poquito Más, a decidedly funky sour fermented with Cabernet Sauvignon pomace from Balistreri Vineyards, and the fascinating Sponteaneous Sparkles, a blend of gueuze from Primitive Beer in Longmont with lychee-infused, brett-fermented black tea that’s served in a decanter." - Eater Staff

Just great beer and a great atmosphere. We did not get a chance to order from the food wagon (but my daughter says it's got amazing food), but my British beer palette was very satisfied by their selection. Very welcoming, the family even had a couple of beers playing board games.

Google
I like this brewery quite a lot. It is my third time here and I really enjoyed their tasty beer. Their staff was very nice and considerate with us. They quite a collection of nice merchandise to buy as well. However, their selection of beer has improved and I appreciate it more for it. The beer is really good. Definitely plan to come back. Especially as they have food trucks from time to time.

Google
I love this brewery! The owners are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, SUPER Friendly and just the BEST!!! The beer is top notch and it’s a great atmosphere. If you are in the area, it’s a must to go if you are a beer lover looking to hang with great people.

Google
Novel Strand Brewery is your go-to spot for the best beer in Denver - if not the best brewery I’ve been to in the US. Here, it’s all about well-balanced unfiltered hoppy beers and smooth lagers - not a bad beer on the menu. The moment you walk in, you’re hit with that cozy, "everyone's welcome" feeling, thanks to a crew that’s super friendly and genuinely stoked about beer. The perfect spot to kick back with friends or sit at the bar and chill. What really makes Novel Strand stand out is the vibe. The staff here are all about making you feel at home, ready to chat, recommend, or just share a laugh. So, if you're into great beer and even better company, Novel Strand is the spot. It’s relaxed, it’s fun, and it’s where you want to be. Trust me, grab a pint here and you're in for a good time.

I wanted to meet some Baker friends for drinks and this seemed like a convenient location. The atmosphere was a little loud but not unbearable and the music was pretty good. We were generally having a fun time and most of us thought the beers were ok, especially the more hoppy ones. Unfortunately, a shorter bald man came from the back of the brewery and made a crude sexual comment to one of the employees (a woman) and that totally ruined the vibe for us. I don’t know if this is normal but we were all so uncomfortable that we skipped getting dinner from the food truck and went somewhere else.

Google
Novel Strand is one of the best brewaries in Denver. Great staff that really serves the Baker neighborhood. Always a very interesting selection of beers that changes constantly. I'm obsessed with the fermented teas with tropical fruit flavors. And the Altbier is amazing, almost identical to the beers I had when I visited Dusseldorf even down to the glasswear. You can tell they have an immense knowledge of beer. This hidden gem is not to be missed for anyone exploring Denver's brewaries.

Google
One of the best breweries in Denver! The owners put so much effort into making Novel Strand a special neighborhood brewery where you feel like family, with so many fun events, food trucks, pop-ups supporting other local businesses etc. Tamir brews with passion and is always coming out with something unique that you'd never see anywhere else! Stop by, you won't regret it :)

Google
When I asked about an NA option, the beertender (who seemed to maybe be the owner), rudely replied “well someone is drinking right?” When we said yes they had a couple of sparkling waters. It’s 2024 and lots of us choose to not drink for many reasons, it’s no need for hostility.

Yelp
I went to Novel Strand during one of their food pop-ups. I had a tasty non-alcoholic cocktail and a falafel pita wrap. The wrap was delicious and the falafel was perfectly crispy and authentic. I would definitely return! Service was good, and the ambiance of the bar is cute and would be suitable for a date.

Yelp
Visited Novel Strand in a snowy Friday afternoon so it wasn't very busy. We were immediately greeted by staff when we walked in. The brewery also serves coffee mornings through early afternoon. They offered to make a cold brew for hubby even though it was past coffee hours. I tried a couple hoppy brews."Yellow" was my favorite! A bonus was meeting Co-Founders, Chantel and Tamir and our server, Adam seems like he never meets a stranger. Such a cool spot, laid back, with warm spirited staff. Can't wait to visit again!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed this neighborhood bar. I'm always enjoying those local feel good establishments. I always try to support. I was invited to a popup burger sale here and nothing goes better with beer than burgers.

Yelp
I didn't get many sour beers while on my last trip to Colorado however in the case of Novel Strand Brewing Company that is the direction I went with for my beer choice. The Hamsa was the beer I had here and I was really thrilled with it! I had a lot of sours off and on for about two years and felt some were just too sweet. Too much like a soda pop. But this beer was perfect. It had an excellent balance to it, was elegant and wasn't sugared up in the slightest. Flavor highlights is actual and lovely sour and tart flavors which were just wonderful and a very nice oak flavor to it that complomented those other two flavor features perfectly. I didn't try any other beers but if they are all as good as the Hamsa then this is a definite stop for craft beer enthusiasts and even if not the Hamsa itself is worth coming here for.

Yelp
After getting lectured by a know-it-all server about common beer classifications, we figured this place probably isn't the right fit for an average Joe IPA drinker like me. The best part? A woman walked up to the counter and got the same unsolicited lesson--the look on her face was priceless. I guess business is so good here, the insults come free. Bye bye.

Yelp
Stopped in Novel Strand for a beer and was surprised. The interior is nice and they have patio seating as well. There is no real food, just popcorn. The beer menu is fairly simple and small but we were really happy with all of the house beers we got. The beers were very good. We would definitely go back.

Yelp
I came to Novel Strand on a late night date when it was practically empty. The bartender was super cool and conversational. They don't have many options, but I liked the IPA that I ordered. There's a ton of brewery choices in Denver, and this one I would definitely come back to. Gotta try more of their brews! The inside is super cute, and I love their theme overall.

Yelp
I've been here a couple dozen times now and it's always a great experience. The staff are all super friendly, the beers are tasty & unique and there's a great community vibe. My current favorite brews are the funk shwei and sour krush - both are very craveable! Bonus: they have a rotating cast of great food trucks here (Barbosas BBQ is my current fave!) and in addition to sparkling water, they have an interesting selection of N/A drinks (hibiscus tea on tap, aqua frescas) if you're with someone who doesn't drink alcohol.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly, neighborhood brewery with a solid variety of beers. They have a few IPAs, some lighter beers, as well as sours and even a kombucha. All are solid and the staff is always engaging and welcoming. They also throw and annual block party that is super fun and have food trucks stop by a few nights each week, so there's always something new to check out!

Yelp
Walking around Denver, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon Novel Strand. We weren't disappointed. Some good beers and a coffee shop as well. It wasn't very busy, we only got one beer each and kept walking. The man at the bar was very friendly and it was nice, quiet, and quaint inside.

Evan S.

Yelp
Rude staff on Sunday morning. They keep your card if you leave your tab open. Completely unnecessary in 2025. Staff tried to blame square pay as if there aren't other businesses with square that give your card back to you
google avatar

Eddie C.

Yelp
I came here on a night of brewery hopping. I was disappointed with the small menu. I only found one beer that I knew I could really enjoy so I got the Laila dark ale. It was good. The taproom is nice and has a good vibe. Just wish they offered a bigger selection of beer.

Yelp
Novel Strand is one of my favorite breweries in the area! First of all, love that two of their 3 owners are women of color - so exciting to find ladies in charge in the beer world! Also, they make incredible beer ranging from lagers to sours to IPAs with unique flavors like bergamot and lychee. Get them on tap or to-go! The brewery itself is a great hangout spot with lots of unique art and when it's nice out and a variety of outdoor tables. They have a variety of food trucks so there's always something good to eat. Check out their events and their book club! During the day it also operates as a Queen City Collective cafe - yum. If you're in the area I highly recommend stopping at Novel Strand! The staff is great and the beer is too!

Yelp
Delicious beer in a laid back atmosphere. The owners are friendly and answered all of my questions. I tried a sour which is big enough to share or have for two+ glasses. Seating at the bar and some tables inside. They have a patio area outside with plenty of picnic tables . They have food trucks outside if you get peckish. I look forward to going back to try more of the beers they have on tap and in bottle/cans.

Yelp
I was a coffee customer during coffee hours (nearing beer hours) trying to charge my laptop and the only available outlet was at a large table. It had a sign reserving it for large parties but there was another small party at a "large party" table so I figured it was fine to sit. I was going to move if any big groups came in. The shop was fairly empty with only a couple coffee customers quietly working or chatting. As soon as I started moving to the big table, Tamir told me to I can't sit there. I asked about the other big table with a small party. Still was told no (they were getting up to leave at this point). Ultimately, I left the shop entirely because I needed an outlet but couldn't use the one available due to an imaginary group of brewery customers having imaginary drinks I guess. I would've had a beer and stayed to work at a small corner table had I been allowed to charge my computer for a bit while the shop was mostly empty. He's been name dropped in other reviews for being rude so I guess I'm not too surprised.

Yelp
I've only been visiting Novel Strand for a few months - unacceptable since it's only two blocks from me, and I don't know what was wrong with me for the last few years. But, I'm making up for lost time, and have repeatedly made the 2 minute walk over to pick up a four pack. It seems like there's always something new and different, and I've enjoyed everything I've tried. The single hop series is impressive, but so is everything else - from witbiers to sours. I feel so fortunate to have Novel Strand so close to home, and every staff member I've personally interacted with has been incredibly friendly. On top of the great beer, a different food truck parks just outside most nights of the week - so you can grab a taco, a bowl of ramen, or a banh mi to go with your beer. This is a fantastic neighborhood place. Thanks, Novel Strand!

Smith J.

Yelp
The drinks are way too expensive. If you don't mind paying top dollar for flat beer that doesn't taste original, in a really small dive bar then go ahead and check this place out. There are so many good breweries in Colorado, I don't even know why you would go to this one.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Beer selection is sorta limited - only a handful of options but what we had was awesome. All outdoor seating with COVID but they have about 8 green houses (no heaters just lighting). They had some heaters for the existing patio bar seating and were also dog friendly. Location is in the midst of a neighborhood but not far off Broadway. Beers were mostly cheap $4-5 with a higher abv at $10. 2/3 female minority owned was also a great selling point!
google avatar

Paloma K.

Yelp
Tasty, unique brews, was glad to get samples before deciding on a pint of my fave for the evening. Friendly, knowledgeable & attentive service. Food truck & outdoor option for drinking & eating a summer time treat at this neighborhood gem. Next trip to Denver I'll go early one day and check out their locally owned coffee partner. I hear some neighbors like to come and get a pint with their morning coffee. Nice vibe.

Yelp
Went here this past Friday night. Saw this brewery on the Colorado Beer Geek website and needed to go. We like going to new breweries and wanted to try it out. When we walked in we noticed they were a coffee shop also which is cool. Coffee in the morning, beer in the afternoon. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the bartender. They were very friendly and attentive. There were a lot of tables. There were about ten seats at the bar. They had 8 beers on tap. 5 IPAs, 1 sour, 1 stout and a white ale. I am an IPA drinker but the person I am with is not. She prefers darker beers. We ordered 4 tasters. 2 IPAs, the stout and the white ale. The IPAs were good and the others were okay. Well def have to come back in a couple of months to see if they have more of a variety. Cheers.

Yelp
What a wonderful find, a few blocks off of Broadway! I came because I follow Mukja Food Truck but stayed for the happy, chill atmosphere and refreshing brew. The staff was more than helpful and you could tell that regulars as well as newbies were well cared for!
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this bar. The ambiance had a real neighborhood feel to it and the board games helped make it feel like you were hanging out drinking beers at a friend's house. The beer was also delicious!
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
Nice clean brewery. Five beers on tap. We tried all five and were pleased. We started with hoppy. Well balanced beers! They're still approachable but the taste screams good ingredients. Good service. Location was nice. Music was at great volume for chatting!
google avatar

Phil M.

Yelp
Really enjoy that it is tucked away a bit away from everything else nearby, really laidback atmosphere. I was able to get a table with my friends outside and enjoy some pretty solid beer on a Saturday evening without a ton of people being around, can't ask for much more.

Yelp
Novel. Strand. The glorious brewery around the corner you always wish you had. There's nothing they don't do well, and if you're anywhere nearby (or even far away) you need to stop in and try out their ambience, because there's a good chance you'll love it. Lemme break it down: Beers: 5/5 - It's a small operation, so everything is fairly small-batch. They have 5-10 beers at any given time, and a majority of them will sell out soon after release, so you're going to want to keep track of when they cycle through new beers. Everything I've had so far is high-quality, true to brew style, and delicious. Staff: 5/5 - Everyone is super friendly and welcoming, I couldn't ask for more Ambience: 5/5 - The place seats probably 40 comfortably, in a combination of bar, tables, and couches. They have games for you to play (jenga and the likes), and we've started bringing our own. They don't blast music, so you can hear your friends talk in normal conversational voices. They're also not pushy with service (go up to bar to order), so everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves. Food: they don't have their own kitchen, so food is provided by a regular cycle of food trucks out front, each of which should be reviewed individually, but are all great.

Debby R.

Yelp
I love craft beer and checking out new breweries. I was looking forward to trying this one in my new hood. I wrapped up my day on a Tuesday and walked about a mile to enjoy a beer. They have "greenhouses" up due to Covid. It was 32° the day I went. Despite there being multiple greenhouses open (it was a Tues at 3 and cold), I was told two or more people were required to use them. I said I was just going to have a quick beer then leave. Still a no. To me, that screams "we don't really need your business" so I left. I won't return. Based on some other reviews, sounds like the staff needs some customer service training. Just an all-around disappointing experience. Unfortunately I cannot review the beer since I never even got that far.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
Been on the must try list for quite awhile! Look forward to trying more of their beers, everyone enjoyed their selections. Cute space, fun couch seating area that made for a great time chatting with friends. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I love having this place in the neighborhood! The beer is tasty, the owners are super friendly, and it's cozy and local. They're also great neighbors, reminding their customers not to use the garbage cans for houses nearby. (Love, right?!) What's not to like? Bonus: before brewery hours, check out Queen City Collective Coffee in the same space!

Matt C.

Yelp
It was awesome to have such a fresh tasting hoppy brew! They didn't have it on draft but the can was incredibly fresh! Decided to get a 4-pack to go!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place less than one star. Uptight, unfriendly staff make what could be an awesome neighborhood hangout into a corporate environment where the time you are sitting on a chair is carefully calculated against the number of beers that are you expected to purchase. One thing that I love about the Baker neighborhood is the chill vibe and relaxed atmosphere, and this place doesn't fit the bill at all. The manager is extremely passive aggressive and rude with no people skills. Although I frequently bring clients to the Queen City Collective coffee shop in the morning, this was by far the worst (and, in fact, the only) negative experience I've ever had at any brewery in Denver.
google avatar

Tate F.

Yelp
Fantastic beer. Bartenders/ brewer is around to actually talk to you about the beer, make recommendations, they know their stuff. I'm not a pro, but I will say this is the best beer in Denver right now. I hope it stays that way.
google avatar

Shannon A.

Yelp
We live in the neighborhood and were so excited when this opened. We love the beer and love Queen City for coffee during the day. We used to get beer frequently and have noticed a pattern with the customer service, or lack thereof, and have since stopped going as much. The brewery owner and another employee have not only been incredibly rude and passive aggressive to us but we have witnessed the same behavior towards others. We understand that this is separately owned than the coffee shop and new owners come in once Queen City closes, but to kick people out or be rude if we are not ready for a beer quite yet because we are finishing coffee is unacceptable. There's plenty of breweries that treat customers with respect and we hope things will change so we can continue to enjoy this neighborhood brewery.
google avatar

Margaret K.

Yelp
The beer is good; no complaints there. However, the staff are wound a little tight. They look like man-bun wearing hipsters but don't let that fool you. If you put your feet on the coffee table, they will chide you for it immediately. If you linger like a fart under a blanket without a fresh one in front of you, they will quickly kick you to the curb, even if the place is empty, which it normally is. We were here for a couple hours, drank a few beers, but witnessed two others get kicked to the curb for not drinking fast enough.
google avatar

Pedro D.

Yelp
Love this place. My good friend Spencer turned me on to Novel Strand. Whenever I'm in Denver I make sure to come here. Love the Kiwi beer. The food trucks that park in front are diverse and great.
google avatar

Elie Z.

Yelp
Really delicious witbier. Hit the spot on a hot day. However, we had some weird interactions with staff. They sat us and said they would be right back to take our order, but they never came back. We used their online ordering system, and then when they delivered our beer they gave us guff for sitting ourselves without them seating us.

Jen A.

Yelp
This place isn't family friendly- the staff and owner do not want families to come here. We were asked to leave after about 25 min playing board games and my two year old made just a few happy screeches. I always step out of businesses if my kids are having a melt down or crying incessantly but this was brief and two of the few just happy screeches. I was utterly surprised when they came over to tell me if we didn't quiet down we would have to leave. This is the first time I have ever been kicked out of a business. I would have thought that a neighborhood place, would be like most breweries around town and be a family friendly place but today they can't tolerate any noise from kids even if it's intermittent and minimal. It's too bad because it's a block from my house and I would have loved coming here. They need to change to 21+ if that is their comfort level so it is clear.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Came here to pick up beers for the weekend, and also grabbed some coffee for the road. They offer a wide variety of beers and all of them are great! Their labels and branding are also amazing and super unique. 2 of the 3 CO-founders are African American, so I enjoyed supporting this brewery even more! Keep it up and can't wait to come back to try more beers!
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
What a awesome, fun neighborhood place!!! I was in Denver to visit my daughter and what a fun time we had. The beer is fabulous and our server Sydney was just awesome!!! I will definitely be back when I return to see my daughter!!!

C C.

Yelp
Great place, great procedures to keep everyone safe, but really weird interactions from the staff. One of the staff members was very condescending.

Sam C.

Yelp
Brewmaster was rude on multiple occasions. In particular he seems condescending and not accommodating. I will no longer purchase beer here ever.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
This place is great, I'll definitely visit again. We came on a Wednesday after work and only a few tables were taken and some people were seated outside. The beer selection was great, all the ones I tried were very good. Cheese plates had amazing cheese and a great price. Service was awesome, atmosphere is hip. They serve coffee from 7a to 2p then switch to beer. It's cool. Street parking is easy to find.
google avatar

Janelle S.

Yelp
Loved this location! The vibe is awesome and the brews are really good. Between my boyfriend and I, we sampled all but maybe one or two. Our favorites were the nitwit, green showers, and midnight marauders. I'm under the understandings that the midnight is infused with the coffee from the cafe that shares the space. I'm interested in coming back during the day to try that. Loved the space and atmosphere. Patrons and service was delightful and the owners were present and personable as well.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
This is such an amazing addition to the Baker neighborhood. I've never before been a "regular" at a bar until now but I'm in there most days, either for coffee in the morning or a beer in the evening or both. The owners are lovely humans and everyone that works there is so great. You can go in solo and sit at the bar and meet new people in the neighborhood, or you can go in with a group of friends and hang out on the couches and play board games. They've got a good rotation of food trucks (Sunday Ramen is my favorite) and it's a good place to meet friends with their dogs or kids! I'm partial to their sours but it's a great place for IPA and stout lovers as well.
google avatar

Matthew Z.

Yelp
This is a great place to grab a craft beer and relax with neighbors. We frequently bring our dog to the dog friendly patio. Our 4 month old is always welcome and loves to people watch. The owners definitely have a passion for making great beer.
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Up and coming brewery in a neighborhood setting with easy to find parking and always an available seat. What more can you ask for? How about every time I have been to Novel Strand, they have a new variety of delicious beers to try. I honestly don't think I've had the same beer twice (yet). Oh and the variety of food trucks that park outside doesn't hurt either.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
The brewmaster was really friendly (yes, he was working there the evening we visited). Good music and good vibes. Most importantly, all of the beers we tried were delish.
google avatar

Gunslunglow L.

Yelp
Great freakin beer. Nice folks too.. so happy to have this place in the hood, my fave is the arbitrary units, but every beer is good. Always have some special brews to keep the menu fresh.

Kristen H.

Yelp
I would like to submit that this is the best brewery in the Baker/lower Broadway area. The beer? Amazing, well thought out, and versatile. The people? So welcoming. Please go here if you haven't already.
google avatar

Stephen B.

Yelp
Great folks serving fantastic beer! Fun spot to hang out and explore the brews while enjoying their attractive indoor space or on their slender sidewalk patio. Their enthusiasm for brewing and friendly attitude are a nice pairing!
