The 21 Essential Maui Restaurants

"The owners of Nuka turned an old Hā‘iku auto supply into a wonderfully modern izakaya and sushi bar. To start, order a few small plates like spicy edamame, miso eggplant, and kinpira gobo (slivered burdock and carrot dressed in sake). Then dive into a sashimi platter, including slices of ruby red tuna and translucent snapper supplied by the owners’ own fishing boat. Or for a simple, satiating meal, try a Nuka bowl: fresh herbs and veggies piled on rice and topped with ‘ahi katsu, blackened tofu, or shio koji salmon. Patience is necessary here; the restaurant doesn’t take reservations, and the wait is often long." - Shannon Wianecki, Bill Addison

The 19 Best Maui Restaurants for Poke, Homemade Desserts, and More | Condé Nast Traveler

"Haiku is a sleepy North Shore town often passed over by tourists, but locals from all ends of the island will make the trek for a taste of Nuka’s seriously fresh sushi and izakaya-style eats. Start your meal with small plates like the truffle edamame or tofu drenched in dashi broth; from there, you can dive into a filling rice bowl made with shaved cabbage, avocado, carrots, basil and mint and topped with your choice of protein, or order a specialty roll made with freshly-caught fish. Then there's the Kushiyaki grilled skewers; miso butterfish and sesame chicken wings round things out. Clever, on-trend cocktails change daily and are more in line with what you’d find at a hotel bar—jazzed up tequila and vodka drinks, a few with a Japanese twist—but the sake selections are carefully consideredm and Japanese beers make for great pairing options as well." - Juliana Shallcross, Kris Fordham

"This sister restaurant to Paia Fish Market is more subdued—but no less delicious. While the space is small, the menu is mighty: Sashimi platters, excellent bowls, specialty rolls, and plenty of poke, all sourced from local purveyors wherever possible. Don't miss the Asian French Fries, served with wasabi aioli and furikake, or the Japanese fried chicken."

Nuka in Haiku offers a cozy, stylish setting with a menu that leans into Japanese classics. While the sushi and rolls were just okay — fresh but not particularly memorable — the meat skewers really stood out. Perfectly grilled and full of flavor, they were a great surprise and easily one of the best parts of the meal. The real highlight, though, was the miso cod - buttery, tender, and deeply satisfying. It alone is worth coming for. Service was solid and the space has a nice ambiance, making it a good choice if you’re in the area and looking for a relaxed dinner with some standout bites.

As we went to the Road of Hana to explore the Twin Falls we discovered this Japanese restaurant was on the way there. Food was excellent. Cute little place. Staffs were wonderful. Sashimi was fresh. Our tummy satisfied.

Delicious sushi spot upcountry. My first time dining at Nuka was outstanding. The highly quality of the fish was noticeable. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs were very warm and friendly. The service from our waitress was okay- she wasn’t the friendliest. Our food came out quickly after placing our order which was awesome because we were hungry! We didn’t have a reservation upon arrival and waited about 15 minutes for a party of two. Its indoor dining only and the space is on the smaller side. There is sushi bar seating as well (about 10 spots). We enjoyed the ceviche and mocktails from their evening specials menu, along with the dragonfly roll, maguro nigiri and ahi salad from their regular menu. We’ll definitely be back.

Before Nuka, this place used to be a Napa store and before that a mini market store. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in a free-standing building on Haiku Road just across the street from the Haiku Cannery mall with lots of free parking. The Asian decor fits the restaurant perfect. It's a small open-air room that fits maybe 50 people max, with regular tables and sushi bar seating. RESERVATIONS: They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait during peak dinner hours especially on the weekend. FAVE FOODS: Karaage Chicken Very small portion but very really good. The chicken was very tender and the light karaage batter was delish. Chicken Katsu Donburi I am a fan of this place after eating this dish! The rice is laced with a sweet/salty soy flavor, topped with a over-hard fried egg cooked in the same sauce, topped with deep fried & super tender chicken katsu strips and finished off with thinly sliced nori. DEELISH! Tempura Shrimp Udon I simply love noodles, so this was an easy decision for my second time here. The broth is a bit sweet but very good (I am NOT a fan of sweet broths but this was an exception). Accompanied by a generous amount of shrimp, green bean, onion and mushroom tempura. Ahi Katsu Donburi Delicious rice dish flavored with a sweet-soy seasoning which is topped with an over-hard fried egg, and chunks of breaded and seared ahi. I personally would've liked to have the ahi cooked all the way through which would make the dish more visually pleasing, though it's still very good overall. Portion size is perfect. SERVICE: Everyone has been great all these years. OVERALL: Maui's best Japanese restaurant.

Minimal menu of locally sourced vegetables, meats, and fish. With each supplier marked on a large board near the entrance. Excellent specialty rolls with melt in your mouth fish. Portioning leaves more to be desired on thr menu that is worth exploring.

When we arrived, our server greeted us and asked if we’d like to start with drinks. We ordered two. Shortly after, the manager came by to check our IDs. We provided them, and both of us are well over the legal age. However, only one drink was brought out. After waiting at least ten minutes, we had to flag down our server to ask about the second drink. She then told us that one of the IDs was not valid—which was not the case. There was no follow-up or apology from the manager, which felt very dismissive. When both drinks finally arrived, they tasted like they might not have been alcoholic, so we had to ask and clarify. The server barely checked in with us during the meal, and we didn’t feel well cared for—despite being the only guests in the restaurant at the time. We love supporting local businesses, but this experience was honestly disappointing.

Nuka in small town of Haiku is an absolute treasure for Japanese food lovers. It was so good that we went two days in a row! On our first visit, we ordered the Chicken Katsu with Beef Curry (daily special), which was the perfect soul food after a long day. The beef was tender and juicy and the chicken katsu was hands down the juiciest we had ever had. We also got their Mauna loa roll (another special) which was heavenly. Also don’t sleep on the drinks! Their Coconut Yuzu Ginger mocktail is amazing! Everything made for an unforgettable meal. We also wanted to try another day special: Drunken Whale sushi roll, but they were out of it. However, the incredibly kind sushi chef, Keiko-San, offered to make it for us if we returned the next day, even though it wasn’t on the special menu that night! This pretty much shows how much they care about their customers! We came back the next day and after our trip to Haleakalā, and true to her word, Keiko-San remembered us and crafted the Drunken Whale sushi roll, which was not only delicious but a true piece of art! So pretty and full of amazing textures and flavors! We also got the Panko Fish and Chips with a side of Papaya Salad. The fish was perfectly crispy and juicy, far better than what we would have even hoped for! Nuka offers amazing food, warm hospitality, and great value for the price. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Maui!

Excellent sushi dinner date. There was one unruly party sitting right behind us... once they left, the tension disappeared and we enjoyed our dinner in peace :) be prepared to wait at busy times. We had an hour wait at 8 pm.

Yelp
We are at NUKA because of the kindness of a Maui local who we met at Mamas Fish House. There really are no accidents! Zero coincidences we were so lucky to find this great restaurant, with wonderful service. All of the team members went out of their way to make our lunch a great, welcoming experience! We made reservations 6 months in advance at Mama's fish house in Maui. The reservations were made on Open Table. We were very excited to go there as we had wonderful experiences at Mama's in the past. We were running a little tight on travel time, so we called to let them know we might be 5-10 minutes late and the girl on the phone told us not to worry that it would be fine. As luck would have it we arrived almost exactly on time. 11:31am for our 11:30am reservation. The girl at the reception desk where you drive up and turn your car over to their valet, greeted us pleasantly and then could not find our reservation. She made a phone call and sent us on to the restaurant. She said they would get it sorted out for us. Whew that felt pretty crazy after making a reservation 6 months in advance. Obviously our reservation was made for the month we were going to be in Maui, June... Not the next month July. But, when Mama's fish house stopped using Open Table, somehow the month got changed. Seems like a simple typo, but the sad part is that they treated us like the mistake that occurred when they changed their booking company was ours. Well it didn't turn out great. Mama's didn't take any responsibility for their mistake. We were directed to wait at the bar while they tried to figure it out. I paid our $150 dollars for the Hawaii specialty cocktails and one glass of Sancerre white wine, that was pretty pricey, but very tasty... We sat in the little bar area and had these beverages, while we waited for our table. Finally after an hour plus of confusion, they told us they would put us at an inside corner table at 2 pm. That is two and a half hours after our reservation at Mamas. Well by now we were starving and very sad at how Mama's had treated us. We started asking some locals in the bar area where else we could go, that was close... Mama's was an hour away from the Westin Kaanapali where we were staying, so we were not familiar with the area. We were directed by a really nice local guy to NUKA... He told us it was an incredible fresh fish, Asian fusion type restaurant. He also mentioned that the owner of NUKA was a fisherman and the prices for what we would get there were amazing! We called NUKA and explained our situation... We asked if they could possibly fit the 4 of us in? They told us they would be happy to help us out! A beautiful girl, Indy greeted us warmly, with a sweet smile. We sat down and she helped us order a large assortment of food, which she said would be the freshest most delicious fish on Maui. Meanwhile... On the wine list, we saw the same Sancerre white wine we had enjoyed at Mamas. It was a very reasonable price at NUKA!!! So reasonable, we ordered a whole bottle of this lovely white wine. Asian Fries: 5 stars plus! Crispy piping hot and literally the best fries we have had in forever! Miso cream pasta: The table next to us ordered it. We ordered it with chicken and it was so tasty. Maui Cattle Cheeseburger: This burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion... Simply as good as a cheeseburger gets! We had the signature sushi roll. It was so good we ordered a second one. Calamari: fresh, fresh, fresh... Crispy and excellent. MISO BUTTERFISH: This fish alone is worth the 1 hour drive to NUKA. ORDER THIS IF THEY HAVE IT! We all were gobsmacked by how good it was. We were stuffed, but we all found room for their Miso Butterfish. YUMMO. We are so happy that we took the nice local fellows advice and left Mama's to go to NUKA.

Yelp
Ordered off of their website online on a Sunday night. Super easy to navigate. Was quoted 55 minutes, but the food was ready early upon arrival 10 minutes prior around 6:30 pm. Only a few tables were left inside. Cucumber sunomono - thinly sliced cucumber and seaweed. The vinegar dressing was sweet, just like the description. It was a little too sweet for my liking. Garden salad - loved the sesame vinaigrette, which is really light. Peahi roll - the salmon was really fresh. Ordered a spicy hamachi and got some salmon roll instead. Paid $2 for extra ginger and literally got like 3 slices of ginger. The rolls we ordered didn't come with any at all. Just a tip to check your to go order before you drive off. We totally get it, mistakes happen! :) The quality of the food made up for it!

Yelp
Not coming back to this place ever again! The new manager, a female just keeps doing dirty things! It's been several times I've ordered take out and she is newer and is cheating us patrons! I once placed an order that included a side of rise, but I ended up canceling the side of rice. When I picked it up she had charged me for the side of rice I had said no rice after all. So, she said she'd correct the charges $5.00 I get home and she never canceled the rice nor the charge. 2nd time. I ordered a shrimp tempura salad and was going to be a take out order, it was taking too long, so I said I would eat it there instead. She told the waitress she had removed it from the menu @ $20. I was bummed out, as i really wanted it. She said I could order a side of tempura and a side salad. The waitress said would be $12 for the tempura and then salad. By the time they brought the check they had added an extra $4. to the $12 order of shrimp tempura plus another $10 for the salad. They always do things like this and end up overcharging. You by blindsided techniques to upsell, It's happened several times. I wrote a note that I will not be coming back again. How in the world do you pay $26 for a skimpy salad with only a few pieces of large batter and tiny pieces of shrimp! That's ridiculous! These people are really ripping patrons off, and they are very nasty in terms of attitude. It is true, save your money and time, there are way better places than this. I would not recommend this place at all! and I will never come back to this place! so deceitful and dishonest, I'm very disappointed.

Yelp
We went for lunch. I was a little sad as I wasn't aware the dynamite is only for the dinner menu. Everything was still good. But it was not outstanding as I was expecting. Maybe it's different at night. I would like to try the night menu to see if I it would change my experience.

Yelp
Came here craving fresh fish and it did not disappoint! I got the sushi platter that came with 9 pieces of nigiri including hamachi, salmon, tuna, snapper and shrimp. It also came with 6 pieces of maki which I got spicy tuna. Each piece came with a really decent portion of fish and the rice ratio was pretty good too. What stood out was how fresh and melt in your mouth the fish was! Also got the spicy edamame which was super flavorful and garlicy and the hibiscus drink which was super refreshing. Overall a great meal!

Yelp
From the venue to the creative food drinks and cool staff Nuka is flat out GREAT! Every dish was primo. Nuka is worth the wait.

Yelp
We ordered takeout for lunch...and the online ordering options didn't appear to allow Susie rolls. So we settled for burgers, which seemed easy. They were alright..but I'd say stick to sushi at a sushi place. I was excited for the hurricane fries but they really were just fries with a bit of furikake scattered over them, that didn't stick. We ordered sushi for takeout for dinner later that day (we were visiting friends in haiku, and it was the nearest restaurant that sounded good. The sushi was EXCELLENT. There was only one fully cooked roll (I'm pregnant), and it was a California roll so was reluctant to get it because I'm not a fan of Cali rolls. This was nothing like a Cali roll. It was unique and hearty, with salmon and eel sauce, and an aioli of sorts. Huge roll too. My husband's ahi roll looked equally as hearty and delicious! Can't wait to go back for more when I'm not pregnant!

Yelp
Nuka is outstanding. High quality ingredients and craftsmanship. Very intentional in their sourcing and mission. Quaint and vibey interior. Had the burdock root, cabbage, and kinjiri salad to start. Shared a bottle of the islander sake junmai ginjo. Specialty rolls Peahi and Nuka. Hamachi nigiri and hamachi sashimi...unbelievable flavor and texture! Had the house pickles (read the back cover of their menu for the story) and finished with orange li hung mui. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Everyone said Nuka was THE place to get sushi on Maui, and it didn't disappoint! We were warned that there may be a long wait, so getting there right at opening time is your best bet. We arrived early, to a few parties also waiting for the doors to open. There is a decent sized sushi bar and maybe 20 tables inside... pretty cozy. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was amazing. Some of the freshest sushi I've ever had. Everything we ordered was presented beautifully and tasted great! Will definitely return!

Yelp
My bf and I came here for an early lunch after picking up Komoda's in Makawao. It's located in a small business area in Haiku so parking is really hard to find. The waitresses were really nice and the overall ambiance is a cute small restaurant. Lilikoi lemon drop martini: if you love tart, you will love this! Also loved the li hing rim. Asian fries: came out hot! Basically it was just furikake fries but what made it was the wasabi aioli which was the BEST. Did not have a strong wasabi flavor either for those who don't like wasabi. Haleakala roll: a baked salmon roll! This was creamy and one of my favs. Nuka roll: soooo fresh and the fish melts in your mouth. The ponzu sauce with the jalapeño really made this more refreshing! Overall, we would come back! There are def more Japanese/sushi restaurants around Maui, but this was pretty good!

Yelp
If you're craving sushi, Nuka is the place to go in the North Shore. The space is intimate yet still feels open and welcoming; they do not take reservations so be sure to get there early. We went for lunch after an early morning in Haleakala and decided to share 2 small plates, a roll, the nigiri special, and a 9 piece sashimi plate which was the right amount for the 2 of us. I also had the lilikoi orange spritzer which was so refreshing after a morning of hiking. My favorite dish was the Haleakala roll which is a baked roll wrapped in salmon and topped with a delicious sauce. My husband's favorite was the miso butterfish which was so light and buttery and had a nice sweetness of the broiled skin. The nigiri special was a torched salmon belly which was so good with a nice smoky flavor. The Asian fries were nice for sharing to give a little crunch to the meal and came with a tasty wasabi aioli dipping sauce. The sashimi plate included 3 pieces each of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon. Overall, the food was well made and delicious - highly recommend!

Yelp
My friend and I went to Nuka for dinner on a weekday around 5 p.m., and we had to wait for 15 minutes before we got seated. Nuka is a small and sleek Japanese restaurant with diverse small-plate lists, sushi & specialty rolls, plus a range of drinks. My friend and I got karaage chicken and spicy garlic edamame for appetizers. Karaage chicken doesn't come with any sauces on the side. It comes with a lemon, and that lemon was enough to make karaage my favorite dish of the night. The chicken was juicy and well cooked, and the breading on the chicken was light and crispy. The spicy edamame was pretty good, too. Some edamame were flavored more than the others, but it was still really good. We also got Nuka and rainbow specialty rolls. Of the two specialty rolls, Rainbow was the better one. The rolls weren't packed properly, and it kept falling apart. They also used a very small cut of the fish. We also tried their panna cotta and double scoop ice cream - green tea and calamansi flavors. Panna Cotta was not very flavorful. It was barely sweet. The fruit on top wasn't fresh. It was very dry. The two scoops of ice cream were pretty good. Calamansi flavor was citrusy, so it was hard to finish it by itself towards the end (still pretty good, though). Overall, it was a good experience. The ambiance was great, and the service was wonderful. Parking can be a bit tricky. We parked in the parking lot next door, but I'm not sure if you are allowed to.

Yelp
So I have not been here in several years. I was impressed the menu has grown and the place still looks good inside it is clean and simple. The drink menu is not overwhelming it has some variety but not too much. I had an old fashion this time and was very happy with the drink. It had good flavor and was well made. Our wait time was actually not that bad for a Friday evening. Keep in mind they don't take reservations so you have to go and wait which we didn't mind. It was my daughter's birthday so there were 4 of us so we ordered several items. We started with a few small plates , the baked mussels were excellent and I have had them from several places on island I would say these are in my top two. Well prepared and flavor was very nice. Also had the dynamite which had scallops mushrooms and zucchini. This dish was good. We also had the Hamachi Carpaccio, the fish was very fresh as well as the jalapeños and cucumber it had a nice garnish of ogo or (seaweed) this was also very good. Then they started bringing the rolls and the sashimi platter that we ordered. We had the Godzilla roll which had tempura shrimp fish roe and some sauces. This was one of the specials we really enjoyed. We also had the Haleakala roll which was a baked California roll with salmon, tobiko, bonito and dynamite sauce. I am usually not a big fan of baked sushi but I really enjoyed this one. We also had the Nuka roll which reminded me a lot of the hamachi carpaccio. Still a very delicious roll but the flavor profile was very similar since it is spicy tuna , shiso leaf, cucumber, snapper, jalapeño, nuka sauce. The one I found interesting was the Hawaiian roll, which had tuna , avocado, cucumber and toasted macadamia nuts. It was very clean but had a nice crunch from the Mac nuts. To me the true piece of art in the whole meal was the sashimi sampler plate. All of the fish was fresh and buttery nothing. It also had a very nice mix of different types of fish , surf clam, and tako (octopus) tuna, Hamachi, ika (squid)and it was a work of art. The orange zest sherbet was a nice way to finish off the evening. The servers were very nice and attentive for as busy as they were and everything was prepared very well. I will be going back. Had a very nice time.

Yelp
We live right down the road from Nuka- but unfortunately we don't go there as often as we would like because they don't take reservations.... And I have anxiety BUT whenever I do decided to get over myself and dine in at Nuka it is the best. The service is excellent. The restaurant is small, (and as I said they don't take reservations) it is worth the wait! And I feel the fact they don't take reservations enables more customers to actually get to dine in. Upon walking in they will take down your number and send you a message when your table is ready. We always have the best time, the most excellent dinner, and the best of memories made when visiting Nuka. The energy is just excellent. The food is perfect- and it's 1000/10 worth it. GO GET NUKA!!!

Yelp
Best overall food on maui. Very friendly service. My favorite dish was the spicy edamame it completely wrecks all edamame from everywhere else.

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday night, staff were friendly & attentive, environment was aesthetically pleasing & clean. The food was very delicious & cooked well! Unfortunately we weren't super hungry to finish everything but it was one of our favorite meals we had during our vacation. The green matcha ice cream was DELICIOUS & a must when visiting. Definitely would recommend this spot for a nice dinner!

Yelp
It was so good we went twice during our stay in Maui! Always get the daily special sashimi options and try the non alcoholic lilikoi pomegranate spritzer for a refreshing complement. They seem to have a different guest chef each night so there's daily specials for sashimi, kitchen entrees, and rolls. First time we went on a Monday and everything was amazing - from the fresh sashimi to the butterfish stuffed jalapeños to the super creative special rolls. The second time, we went on a Sunday and the special rolls were not as good. However the miso eggplant (non daily special), the bluefin toro sashimi, and the nuka roll (non daily special) were all delicious!

Yelp
Nuka is THE BEST!! Whether dining in or ordering for pickup, they have the freshest sushi and most delicious menu around. Best to get there early, otherwise you could have a long wait... but it's totally worth it!!

Yelp
The best sushi we had in upcountry! We sat at the bar, everyone was super friendly, the service was efficient and they were just over all on top of everything. I would definitely go out of my way to visit Nuka again.

Yelp
Food here was amazing. Definitely recommend the Haleakala roll and dynamite small plate. Service was great, gave good recommendations. Overall great experience.

Yelp
Friendly staff in a packed house even at 5:30! Extensive sushi and small plate menu. Decent prices except for the alcohol, a bit overpriced. That margarita and half glass of sauvignon were $14 and $13 respectively. The vegetable udon was tasty and the mochi ice cream bites were the perfect end to the meal. I do have to add that under amenities here it says masks are required and staff wears masks. That is no longer true.

Yelp
Lunch on Valentine's Day with my boo. Everything we tasted was delicious! And our waitress was very kind and attentive. Miso cream pasta, NUKA Roll, and calamari. And my lemon drop was the perfect treat!

Yelp
Hands down best sushi on that part of the island! Ordered King Kong special, Nuka, Tempura, Haleakala, and lollipop. The ambiance was nice. Seating is limited, so come in earlier.

Yelp
I love that Nuka has online ordering. I have ordered from Nuka twice and the food has been ready both times at the time I picked. The woman at the door was nice and friendly both times and made me feel welcome. I really enjoyed the shrimp tempura udon. Yum yum! I loved it so much the first time, I had to get it again the second time I ordered. I look forward to coming here again and trying something else.

Yelp
Minus one for no reservations and a far, dark drive from town. But I think it was worth it! About 25 min drive from Kahului, waited for an hour (my bf and I just watched a movie in the car because they call you when they're ready) Everyone was super nice. Food and drinks were great! The menu was priced right, ingredients tasted fresh, hot foods were still hot when served, and the service was pretty quick as they gradually come one by one. I will come back again!

Yelp
Pro-tip: Stick around after you get put on the waitlist even if it's a long wait. Sometimes people on the waitlist ahead of you will change their mind and give up their spot, then the hostess will ask people waiting around if they want to be seated instead of calling the people who are next in line on the waitlist. Highlights: The food is impeccable. I tried loads of restaurants in Maui and this place really stood out in their food quality and flavor. The torched hamachi belly was hands down my favorite, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Nuka bowl and the Miso Cream Pasta. The sashimi platter is a decent deal too to sample a variety of fish. Overall, I'd recommend! Lowlights: Some items definitely seem too pricy, but it's probably reasonable for their quality of food. The Haiku Roll was definitely the most disappointing in flavor compared to all the other dishes we ordered.

Yelp
So so yummy!! The Haleakala roll was amazing. Their rice and chicken is great and there is something magical in those French fries! Fast service, great sake, amazing sushi!!

Yelp
Nuka was recommended to us by the staff at the Zipline spot off Haleakala and man was this just what the doctor ordered. We really were craving some good sushi while in Maui and from asking locals and workers, they agreed that Nuka was the place to be. Parking can be a bit tough and Tight -- I had to make a full round around the building because we missed the only available spots the first time. The Haleakala Roll and Nuka Rolls were easily my favorites of our lunch. They really hit the spot after a morning of ziplines. I think that one can pass on the Agedashi Tofu. It wasn't bad -- it was just more-so okay. 9/10 would still tecommend.

Yelp
My friends and I stumbled upon this gem while watching some surfing at a nearby popular lookout point. Such a great find! We sat at the bar and watched sushi chefs prepare some fresh rolls behind a transparent case of fresh fish. The best item was hands down the Hawaiian supermango roll (must order), second best was the Green Mile, and then the Head Coach roll. All 3 were from the specials menu, a one pager rotating menu separate from the regular booklet menu. These rolls were a bit on the pricier side at $20+, but was way better than the spider roll we got from regular menu, very basic nothing to brag about. The Miso eggplant was recommended by the server, I liked it as it was super soft and tasty, but not too easy to share! Finally the home made black sesame and green tea ice cream (must order) were A+! I recommend 1 scoop each to maximize tasting experience. Both were phenomenal, and a perfect dessert to wrap up the meal. Great vibe, good service, definitely a place to try out if you are in the area, and craving some fresh sushi!

Yelp
Read about Nuka and decided to show up knowing that the wait could be long. It was well worth the wait if you are patient. The food was good that we order too many items just experience the taste, craft, and care that went into making the food. Top notch chef, service, and ambience. Oh, and the Manhattan kept pace with the food. Nuka is now a must stop for our return trip to Maui.

Yelp
We went to Nuka last night for dinner, and wow did we get some unexpected flavor profiles from a Japanese restaurant! We ordered a shrimp tempura roll, spicy garlic edamame, and the miso butterfish to start. The edamame was tossed in a garlic chili sauce which definitely had a kick but was filled with flavor. They give you a big portion too! The 2 highlights of our visit were the miso butterfish which literally melts in your mouth! And the miso noodles with added chicken. We both agreed that we've never had similar tasting dishes at other Japanese restaurants. Umami overload! Service was top notch. Not only were all the staff very friendly and attentive, but it was fun to watch the chefs work their magic in the kitchen as well. You can tell this place runs like a well oiled machine. Would highly recommend Nuka!

Yelp
Overall a very good experience. Everything we ordered was extremely well presented and very tasty. Wait to get in is a little slow and seemed a bit confusing as to who was getting seated when. Service inside was good although small staff to manage a lot of table turns. They do implement a texting service when your table is ready that we didn't utilize but should have. You can go have a drink nearby or go watch sunset then when your table is ready be seated quickly. Quality and taste of the food was EXCELLENT! Found myself just sitting back and enjoying every delicious plate brought to us. Definitely will return and utilize the texting service more effectively.

Yelp
I had a wonderful dinner here on one of my last nights in Paia. This restaurant is locally owned but you would never guess it. The fun, fusion tastes found at this restaurant is something you would expect at a 5 star hotel along the beach. Highly recommend the sushi rolls, fresh ice cream with authentic Japanese flavors, and the miso pasta.

Yelp
We were craving sushi driving back from our road trip to Hana and so glad we found this place! Everything we ordered was fresh and tasted delicious! Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Yelp
Nuka! The meaning of Nuka translated is rice bran. An unassuming name for one of, if not, the best sushi spots on Maui. I have been coming here for years and I've never had a bad meal. It is so good. It almost brings a sense of normalcy to the lunacy one can experience in Haiku. Yes, food can do that. Whether it's a special occasion or just a bomb lunch. This is the spot. Hero-San and the prompt kitchen staff will serve up the tastiest specials to dine on whatever the celebration. Moon, the owner, really has her act together here. And it sure is a gem of a place they get to serve up specialty sushi year round. 5/5! Would recommend.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I are huge sushi fans and though being on Maui, we should find somewhere to go! However, this place was extremely underwhelming. We had better sushi on the mainland than on the island. It was recommended by a friend of a friend that grew up on the island, so I thought why not try it! They do not take reservations so we called ahead to see what the wait would be and they said it was about 45 minutes. We decided to take the chance even though we could have had dinner somewhere else. It was cute and a lot of chickens in the parking lot, but the food was okay. We shared the wings (that was delicious!) and sashimi and a roll. Nothing spectacular for the cost. I would say if you're really craving sushi, you can go here, but we had better in other restaurants not specialized in it.

Yelp
Fresh local sushi right by the air bnb I was at, forgot the name of the roll (month later review) but it had incredible flavors! Loved the vibe of the place, located in northern maui and gives off a very intimate energy since the seating is limited. Cannot wait to return!

Yelp
Delicious food but kind of expensive even from a California perspective. But from hamachi sashimi, to nuka roll and miso roasted eggplant. Everything we had so far are delicious. I also like the ambience. Good service :)

Yelp
This was our first experience at Nuka and we couldn't have been more impressed. The food was extraordinary, the service impeccable and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Was recommended this restaurant by a bar tender in the town close by. We were on our way to the airport and would've never known without the recommendation. I am so happy this was our last meal on the island. Great service, best food and drinks. The rice is unbelievable. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I got the 69, which was great, but my husband's miso marinated black cod stole the show! It tasted like buttered sunshine. Our waitress was very sweet.

Yelp
This is a pretty decent sushi place for lunch. Most of the food tastes fresh. Ordered a variety of rolls and appetizers. All the rolls were pretty good. Nothing outstanding, but overall good. Very busy during lunchtime. Lots of takeout happening and dine in was full for Friday lunch.

Yelp
Great Food and service. The wait was about an hour for parties of 5 or more. 4 stars for service and food. Would have been 5 stars but they lack in informing customers that the prices they charge is actually more than the price on their current menus. Can you imagine how many people don't notice this?

Yelp
After a long and exciting drive on Hana Road, we are excited we made it to flat land. Nuba was amazing, no reservation, first come first serve and we got there 1/2 before it opens, and soon guests started arriving. Yeppie made it to the first seating. Services is friendly and food is the most authentic Japanese tastings I ever had. The toros were super fresh, melted in your mouth. The rolls were nicely made with great presentation and very delicious, love it they are light on the rice. The eggplant was packed with miso sauce and grilled to perfection. The spicy scallop hand rolls has great favor with a hint of sesame oil and again very fresh large chunks of scallops with a crunch of jicama. We had no complaint with everything we had. Every dishes were executed well with thoughts and lastly the home made sesame ice cream was out of this world, I can eat a whole gallon
