Golden HOF and NY Kimchi Open in Rock Center From Golden Diner Owner - Eater NY

"NY Kimchi is a serene Korean steakhouse paying homage to the original family restaurant with a water-themed decor featuring bamboo and creek bed motifs. The menu includes polished Korean dishes such as crudos, salads, and grill options, alongside a selection of desserts." - Melissa McCart

This newly opened spot offers a modern take on Korean cuisine, adapted to local tastes. With its cool vibe and diverse menu, it’s perfect for groups to enjoy together. The dishes — from kimchi pancake and japchae to porterhouse steak, doenjang stew, and desserts — were all good. They also have a wide range of drinks, including Korean liquors, various wines, and cocktails. One downside was that, even considering it’s located underground, the cell reception was almost nonexistent.

Solid but i wouldn't come on my own dime lol. Their Bibim nangmyeon was actually impressive for what felt like a very americanized kbbq spot. Their banchan also is super good its one of if not my very favourite in manhattan 🥹❤️ (i havent been to Sunns yet i know its supposed to be the best) The meat was fine. Just get the kalbi nothing else is worth it. Love that they serve it with lettuce leaves. The hanger steak with chimichurri is way too salty and quality is unimpressive. The soft serve (forgot to take a pic) is a must and was one of the best bites of the night. The atmosphere is definitely a draw. It's great with friends we are on a date or with family. It's a beautiful space with good music and good lighting. The individual elements of the restaurant (meat, sides, banchan etc) can be found better elsewhere, but the overall experience is very enjoyable I had so much fun

Located below Golden HOF, NY Kimchi is operated by the same owner (as well as the same owner as Golden Diner). The interior of the restaurant is more upscale and there's plenty of seating for big parties. Service is great here. Their menu offers a raw seafood section, appetizers, Korean dishes, and, of course, meats for your Korean BBQ experience. My friends and I ordered their scallop crudo, their garlic chive pancakes, their wagyu and galbi, naengmyeon, and cheesecake soft serve with cornflakes at the end. Everything was pretty good and delicious. I loved the scallop crudo and thought that the meat quality was stellar. The cheese cake soft serve at the end was interesting at first, but definitely grew on me by the end, and I loved the corn flakes in it. They also had a great cocktail menu and I tried their kimchi cocktail, which was very unique and surprisingly better than I thought! However, I would say that this was on the pricier side and for the price and portions, I feel like it was a bit lacking. Overall, not a bad Korean BBQ spot but I think you could find better value for the money you're spending.

Solid, but not mind blowing. Meat was high quality and tasty and it’s definitely ideal eating it cooked table side (so get a grill table). Other dishes were hit and miss. Scallop crudo flavor combination didn’t work for me. Chopped salad was really good and I’d order it again. Kimchi fried rice was middle of the road.

Had the jaeyook chopped salad. One of the best salads I’ve had. The mix of ranch and the gochujang sauce is a match made in heaven. NY Kimchi Jjigae warms your soul. And the hanger steak with the Korean sauce makes it unique and very filling. Highly recommend trying this place!

This is a very good KBBQ spot and it probably will serve the Rockefeller area well in providing good Korean food, but compared to the heavyweights in KTown, I don’t find many things special about this spot (maybe with the exception of the steamed Parmesan egg). That’s good in itself though - reliably good Korean bbq with very friendly service is something I’ll come back for.

Wow first review! An exciting new opening from the same team that brought you Golden Diner. Technically it's a "reboot" of the restaurant that occupied the space but other than the name, it's really a different concept altogether. Although it bills itself as a steakhouse, where NY Kimchi really shines is its creative takes on Korean dishes. The standouts for me were the kanpachi sujeonggwa (which sounds weird because sujeonggwa is a traditional sweet punch, but I promise you it totally works) and the parmesan egg souffle. It was the most perfect 계란찜 I've ever had anywhere. The steaks are actually a great value as well especially when you consider the quality and variety of the banchans served alongside. Just note not all of the tables have grills built into them but they are able to make everything for you. The hanger steak we ordered came out just right from the kitchen anyway. Staff are still working out some kinks but very friendly and enthusiastic. Will definitely be re-visiting!

I stopped in and had a tasty dinner. I was able to sit at the chefs counter which looks into the kitchen. I was dining solo, so this was the perfect seat. I could get a good look at all the food I couldn’t eat tonight, but definitely want to come back. I also don’t really like fusion but I think of it as “integrated” rather than fused. Nice take on a steak frites. And bonus was a good NA sparkling rosé. I love a place that has good NA drinks.

Yelp
Last night a friend and I went out to try NY Kimchi, the newest restaurant from the team behind Golden Diner. The decor was simplistic yet elegant. A restaurant where you can get dressed up if you want, however it does not feel stuffy. We started out the night with 2 crudos, both light & delicious. They were both unique and I could taste the Korean influence. It was the perfect start of the meal. Then came the Korean BBQ. Both meets were tasty and well cooked table side by their team. The portions were smaller than I am used to at traditional KBBQ restaurants. Also, the sides were all well seasoned, however I was disappointed by the limited options. I would come back and eat it again if a friend wanted to try it, but it wasn't particularly memorable. For the new restaurant, I didn't feel any growing pains; the service was impeccable. Next time I'd come back and try more items from their rare bar and cocktails.

Yelp
I'm so glad I got to check out NY Kimchi, one of two new restaurants opened by the team behind Golden Diner. I agree with other Yelpers that nothing particularly stood out, BUT I felt like all the dishes were very well-executed for the most part. Started off with the crudo scallops and they were very tasty!! Scallops were fresh and came with a very bright citrus flavors that complemented the sweet soy based sauce. The NY Roc were baked oysters covered in a kimchi butter, which was very fragrant and had the right amount of kick. As a fan of jeons, I enjoyed their garlic chive jeon because it was super crispy on the outside, yet still chewy and packed with chives on the inside. The japchae was probably the most disappointing dish. While it had great flavors and seasoning, the noodles were way overcooked and even stuck together. For mains, the kalbi and pork belly were both delicious. I liked how the kalbi was tender but not overly fatty. Similarly the pork belly had a better meat to fat ratio that I expected. Both were marinated nicely! The hanger steak was also tender and came with an addicting chimichurri sauce. For banchans, my friends enjoyed the kimchi and radish, while I really liked their eggplant. I didn't personally get to try their drinks, but my friends got to check out different Korean beers which were really refreshing. They not only had cocktails but also a selection of soju (which were also pretty affordable!). Staff were friendly and knew the menu really well. They help cook the meat as well. Decor reminded me of a minimalistic Korean restaurant but with some earthy elements. Overall I had a great time here and am interested in comparing my experience with that of at Golden HOF upstairs!

Yelp
Solid Korean BBQ/Steakhouse from the Golden Diner folks. NY Kimchi doesn't really change the formula a ton, but does have a fairly nontraditional menu and makes some creative takes. Something's hit, some things don't. I want to clarify, this is deliberately not an authentic KBBQ experience. Fine with me, but if you're expecting that you will be disappointed. Think of this more of a hybrid between KBBQ and American steakhouse. Onto the menu, it's built kind of like an American steakhouse, with raw bar, appetizers, and steak. I thought the Ssamjang Caesar Salad was great. Well executed, very umami. The crudos are interesting as well and feature Korean flavors throughout. On the meat itself, I thought it was just OK. I'd like to see more interesting options for the table side. It felt a little limiting for what it was. Overall, I'd definitely come back. It's a great post-work dinner and it's a lot more interesting than some of the other options in the area. There's some kinks that need to be worked out, but the place has potential.

Yelp
So excited to try a new restaurant from the Golden Diner team but sadly a bit disappointed. The location is elevated and the menu sounds yummy, it gives me a bit of a toned down/casual Cote vibe. Unfortunately, most dishes were lacking in flavor and seasoning. The dishes all have potential and the concept is there but the execution wasn't done right, sadly! I enjoyed the scallop crudo dish, and the kimchi fried rice was very well-seasoned, balanced kimchi yet slightly sweet flavor. The kimchi jeon was very crispy but sooo bland. Ssamjang caesar salad was a bit too much dressing for my liking, so it felt heavy. The tuna tartare was a bit overly seasoned/sauced imo. And the meat quality of the kalbi was not that great. For dessert, I loved both options! The cheesecake soft serve wasn't too sweet and a hint of saltiness. Yuzu citron sorbet was very refreshing, loved. Overall, there is potential and I would love to give them another chance in the future! I'm hoping dishes were hit/miss since they are still so new.

Yelp
cool interior and concept. but food was just mediocre. unfortunately no standouts to me. attentive service but likely because they are so new. lowkey got kicked out we did ask for the butter which was $3

Yelp
Solid meal, especially given the very short time the restaurant has been open! Service was wonderful throughout. We ordered the marinated Kalbi and Lamb, and really enjoyed both (controversial opinion, but we thought maybe even better than Cote...). The chopped salad and Japchae were also standouts. Dumplings and Jeon were fine but not memorable - given the size of the menu I'd likely pass on these. Didn't love my Manhattan cocktail. Will need to come back for the Raw Bar options and cheesecake ice cream (machine was unfortunately broken).

Yelp
The team behind Golden Diner opened up two restaurants in the same building by Rockefeller Center. Street level is Golden Hof a Korean gastropub and on the lower level is NY Kimchi a steakhouse/KBBQ joint. We went to NY Kimchi and it was very good. KBBQ has become ubiquitous in the city and NY Kimchi changes it up a bit adding in steakhouse staples with a Korean twist. You can choose from meats grilled at tableside or from the kitchen. If you choose tableside you need to pick a minimum of 2. We had; Scallop Bokkeum - scallop crudo in a gochugaru vinaigrette. A stand out raw bar offering, wish the portion was a little bigger. Garlic Chive Jeon - crispy Korean style pancake with jalapeño soy sauce. Another excellent appetizer, cooked to a perfect crisp and not oily. Skirt Steak - soy marinated, the skirt steak was delicious and a standout from similar offerings at other KBBQ spots. Kalbi - soy marinated, very good. Banchan - loved the banchan, refillable as is customary. Highlights were the potato salad, cucumbers, radish kimchi, and eggplant. Corn Cheesecake Softserve - one of the best soft serve ice creams going. Service was excellent. While the restaurant is big it was packed. Reservations are recommended.

Yelp
The venue is pretty, but the food was just average. My friend and I tried the garlic chive pancake and marinated galbi, which came with banchan. Both orders tasted like they came from a Korean spot you'd go to for convenience if it's near your work, rather than for a special dining experience. We observed that there were more non-Asians than Asians during our visit, so it seems like it could appeal to a broader crowd for the atmosphere. My friend and I also opted to skip dessert since nothing on the menu really tempted us--most of the options were cold on a chilly NY winter day, aside from a fruit bowl. It was their first week, so I hope the restaurant can improve and thrive.

Yelp
My partner and I had the chance to dine at NY Kimchi and loved our entire experience. From the extremely warm welcome at the door by the host to our super knowledgeable server Leigh Ellen, we loved everything! Beyond the excellent, attentive, and genuine hospitality, we adored the food. Standouts for us were the Salmon Naengchae Crudo, the Jaeyook Chopped Salad, Parmesean Egg Souffle, and the (marinated) Kalbi. There was a lot of punch and impact in the flavors of these dishes and we found ourselves trying to eat every little bit of food left at the end. The assortment of Banchan that came out with the BBQ was also so good - three different kinds of Kimchi, a delicious ssamjang, and so many other dishes. The ambiance was also very comfortable, with plenty of space, beautiful decorations, and interesting but unobtrusive music playing at a perfect volume. I encourage everyone to go. What a wonderful evening, and we will certainly be back soon!

Yelp
The best, from bbq to their mul naengmyeon, may st places make the broth too sweet! Here it's beefy with perfect amount of sour. Also their egg soufflé is to die for as it will s topped with parmesan cheese! All brilliant.

Jeanne G.

Yelp
Food was just meh. Had marinated pork belly and Galbi. Pork belly was tough. Kimji jigae was ok. But our waiter was really good. Not worth going, go to Ktown!

Hannah K.

Yelp
Amazing service and the establishment itself has a nice ambience that can match for a date night (which I did) or for a friend group for casual dining. I will say the tables are all quite small for their platters. For example, they served us 6 banchans and we also got the lamb as one of our entrees, which comes with a plate of lettuce, two sauces and a rice bowl. That, the banchans and another main plus our cocktails and waters barely fit the table and I was unable to enjoy my meal because I was so nervous about anything falling. We started off with the NYK Martini and the Seoul with a View. The seoul with a view was quite sweet but very tasty. The martini, however, was a miss for me. Made with house vodka and kimchi juice, it's not extraordinary and not doing what it's supposed to be doing. I understand this could be a take on a pickleback substituting for kimchi juice, but it was not hitting the mark. Now onto the dishes. For starters we ordered the tangsu tuna tartare and the oysters. I would skip out on the oysters, there was nothing special about them and they were quite tiny. The tartare, however, was amazing! I loved the creativity of turning traditional tangsuyuk sauce into a tartare. However, the jjajjang dusted rice crackers had a bitter and almost briny taste to them that I just ditched them entirely. Jjajjang, if not cooked, tends to be incredibly bitter. We also ordered the jaeyook chopped salad, which was my FAVORITE dish of the night. The gochujang marinated pork belly paired with the perilla ranch dressing was on point. The fattiness of the pork belly was cut by the light and refreshing dressing. For mains, I ordered the LA Lamb Chops and Hanger steak. The lamb chops were amazing! Cooked perfectly, and the lettuce/perilla, rice and sauces make for the most esquisite bite. The hanger steak was also cooked to a perfect medium rare but it was quite salty. The doengjang butter was too overpowering. The banchans were in my opinion, quite subpar. They were not as flavorful as traditional banchans and strayed away from what they're normally supposed to taste like. I could see how this may suit those new to Korean cuisine, but was not for me, personally. Last dish we ordered was the bibim naengmyun. I was initially skeptical about ordering any of the rice/noodle dishes, since I always find Korean restaurants to overprice these typically cheap and homely dishes. I decided to give the bibim naengmyun a try and I wish I hadn't. The noodles are too thick and way too rubbery and lacked flavor. Lastly, we finished off with dessert and decided on the swirl, which is a combination of the cheesecake softserve and yuzu sorbet. For your benefit, get them separately. Together they tasted like a really spoiled cheesecake. Overall I would recommend this place to go with your friends and for a good time, but do not expect anything extravagant or new.

Yelp
Great decor, incredibly friendly and attentive service, drinks paired great with the food and nothing disappointed. Went opening week and they still executed perfectly. We did hanger steak (cooked perfectly, tender, great flavor, loved the peppers), kimchi fried rice (crispy and flavorful, not greasy), salmon (good portion of salmon, lovely hints of maybe....mustard seed?), oysters (fresh, delicious), and the sorbet (im not a sweets guy but it was delicious). Perfect amount of food for two! (Shared plates style). Staff was 10/10 from the hostess to the water refills. CHECK EM OUT!
