The Best Takeout Picnics to Pack a Basket in Minneapolis and St. Paul - Eater Twin Cities

"Inspired by days on a North Dakota family farm and named for a beloved grandmother, Mary Ellen’s is a warm and affordable breakfast and lunch addition to Minneapolis’ Northeast neighborhood. The brunch board feeds 3-5 and comes with three biscuits, a hot pretzel, toast, scrambled eggs, two kielbasa sausages, greens, and more. Be sure to add on a growler of cold press coffee." - Alicia Banaszewski

The Second Coming of Nye’s Lands This Week - Eater Twin Cities

"After ending a 66-year run in 2016, the owners, Rob and Toy Jacob, of Nye’s Polonaise Room are tackling a new project called Nye’s Piano Bar. The new spot is slated to open in Northeast Minneapolis Thursday. It’ll occupy the same space where the Nye polka bar once stood at 112 E. Hennepin Avenue and will officially open its doors at 4 p.m. on January 11th according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. This take will be significantly smaller—1,300 square feet instead of the 11,000 square-foot monster that once was—but will serve up cocktails and beer, martinis, wine, champagne, and more seven days a week. Don’t come hungry, though, because there won’t be any food." - Cinnamon Janzer

This is not the good old thighs of yesteryear but it is a nice tribute to a classic place. Good place to go with friends to sing with the piano and enjoy a couple cocktails.

Amber Crowley

Google
Nye's bar was an absolute blast! The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with a fantastic crowd that really added to the fun vibe. The piano player was exceptionally talented, providing great music that enhanced the overall experience. I had a fantastic time at Nye's bar and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a lively night out. The combination of the vibrant scene, energetic crowd, and skilled piano player made for a memorable evening that I won't soon forget. If you're in the mood for a good time with great music and a fun crowd, Nye's bar is the place to be!

Lexie Haglund

Google
Bartenders & servers are very nice and talented , live music that takes requests and even lets you sing if you’d like. I ordered one espresso martini and it was $15 but well worth it

Google
Obviously since the loss of the restaurant section it's extremely small but it was a super fun environment! We met a ton of new friends and had some great drinks. The bartender is on top of it. The only thing is how run down and dirty it was. And the music is horrible however it's fun if you're drunk enough

Will Tibert

Google
Piano was fantastic, drinks were strong, conversation was great. I’d like to think of this place as an upscale dive bar (if there is such a thing).

Jaclyn NR

Google
We didn't have food but rather just drinks. Ambiance was just perfect, great music (no piano on Monday nights) and the drinks were wonderful (Al Nye and Old Fashioned). Ashley was a sweetheart!

Nikola Bielewicz

Google
Nye’s has a great staff and amazing live piano performances where you can sing anything of your choice! They offer a wide selection of drinks, starting from beer to well crafted cocktails.

Google
Was a newly rebuilt bar, that has some history to it. Had a fairly large group with me, when we moved two tables together we got an attitude from the bartender, big time. When confronted about it she claimed it wasn't her issue but her bosses about us moving the tables. Needless to say we finished our drinks, moved the tables back and left to go next door. I would suggest the bar but only if there is a different bar tender than what we had. And FYI, they don't serve food.

Yelp
I still love nyes. It's cozy, comfortable and the perfect place for a drink with friends. The bartenders are really nice and inviting. I'd come back any day. I love when I'm in the neighborhood and find an excuse to stop by.

Yelp
Went in the other night looking for some of the Polish food several websites said Nye's offers. Found out they no longer serve food; only cocktails, beer and wine. And live music after 8 some evenings. Seemed like a decent place with friendly people but my quest for decent pierogi continues...

Yelp
Cocktails? Yes please. Stopped into Nye's before a dinner restaurant round the corner. I had the chocolate martini and the White Russian with filberts. FYI - filberts are macadamia nuts. Hubby had some beers. This place has a wonderfully extensive cocktail menu. The staff were fun and friendly. The place is known for its piano karaoke. This place also has the nicest bathroom I've seen in a bar in a long long time. Great art all over the bar on the walls, etc. The only note I have is that I wish they had some snacky food.

Yelp
So haven't been to Nye's since they changed from their old full on restaurant to just the bar area. Super cute inside and very red lighting which kind of matches the Christmas festivities . Went on a Monday night and the place was not busy at all . Drink orders were pretty slow as they only had one bartender but overall taste was decent but be warned quite boozy! I imagine weekends have more activity- parking on nearby streets, this area is easy to walk around to other restaurants/bars in the area

Yelp
Any place that's been around since 1950 is a must. Love this little neighborhood gem. The Al Nye is my fave.

Yelp
Such a fun place! We stopped in for some drinks before an event and had a great time. The vibes were really laid back and cool. Lots of seating options and friendly staff. We ordered drinks and visited for a bit. You can easily walk to nearby restaurants so you can make a night of it. I only had one drink, a delicious and decently sized shot!

Yelp
Nye's is a fun piano cocktail bar. They have a pianist playing/singing which stands out from other bars in this area. I hear that they do karaoke with the pianist playing in the background some nights too! The drinks are a little pricy for what you get, but they tasted good :) the only downside was the service; this was our first time going to Nye's and we didn't know what to order, we were not given a menu. When asked what we wanted to drink, the bartender seemed annoyed we didn't know yet. Luckily, someone sitting next to us gave us a menu! The bartender was not engaged, and was doing the bare minimum. This is fine, I was just put off by it at first. Overall, I would recommend this place!

Yelp
This place is lively on a Friday or Saturday night! When the piano bar gets rolling, it is packed to the brim and loud. Every seat in the house is taken, making it difficult to get served right away, but they are doing their best. Cocktail menu is extensive, with several beers on tap as well. Limited street parking is nearby, but close to several other northeast bars for a night out.

Yelp
Nye's just might be my new favorite bar! I love a lounge bar and this one pretty much checks all the boxes. Nye's has comfy, cozy seating and lovely, ambient lighting. They can make all the classic cocktails, plus more contemporary drinks. My friend got a dirty martini and really enjoyed it. I loved my gin gimlet, especially since they included filberts as a garnish. While we both ordered the St. Anthony per our server's recommendation, it was underwhelming and a little too sweet. No worries though because all their drinks are pretty reasonably priced for how boozy they are. The best thing about Nye's is that it's a piano bar! The pianist will play your requested songs herself or you can get up and sing while she plays. I was amazed at how many songs she knew how to play! Everything from Sublime to Elton John. I also loved the pianist's sense of humor and sass. She was hilarious! The only downside of our Nye's experience was our server was a little slow with her service and claimed she didn't know how to split a check three ways. Kind of lame that we had to do the math for her, but she was young. Either way, I can't wait to bring my friends back to Nye's to sing Karaoke!

Yelp
Overall just okay is how I would describe my time at NYE's. The ambiance was the best part. The drink was just mid and probably not worth $13. No piano player during happy hour which was disappointing but understandable. Wouldn't seek out NYE's

Yelp
This was my first time ever going to Nye's Bar! Some friends suggested we stop by since we've never been to a piano bar before. We arrived a little after 8:00 PM since we've heard it fills up quick- this was the right move. Around 9 PM the place was nearly packed! The drink: I ordered an appletini. There were a lot of fun cocktails offered- everything between classic cocktails to their own craft cocktails. As far as martinis go, I liked it! They also had other beverages like wine and beer (I think). Forewarning, they do not have a food menu. The ambiance: this place truly had a good vibe! We were seated in one of their curved booths which made it easy to talk to everyone. The songs played ranged from classics to new songs which was refreshing. At times it may have been too loud, but nonetheless, we loved the piano music! Near the end of our time there, they turned the lights down low which gave the bar a very intimate and sexy vibe. I would love to go on a date here! Service: we were served by a bartender named Kevin. He came to our table right when we sat down, and he even gave suggestions for tasty mock tails for my friends doing Dry January. Our drinks came quick, and he remembered exactly what everyone ordered without having to write anything down! One of the reasons for the four star rating was we didn't receive much assistance when it was later in the night. We did have to flag someone down to receive our bill. However, all of the bartenders were kind to us! Parking: they do not have their own lot, so street parking is the only option. It does get very busy in this area of northeast, so prepare to parallel park!

Yelp
Nyes is a landmark that has begun its second life. Great atmosphere and food. It was the specialty restaurant I remember many years ago. It still is.

Yelp
Pretty cool place. I was honestly expecting a little more from it though. Considering it's a bar, I expected their drinks to be awesome. However, I wasn't very impressed by my drink. I ordered a g&t and the tonic tasted flat and the gin was not very good. The price was nice though, so I suppose I got what I paid for. My friends also weren't super impressed by their drinks, but they weren't terrible. Just average. Ordering and then waiting for a drink also took a long time. But, to their credit, they were somewhat busy. Seating is also tough since it's a small place. I would not recommend coming here with a big group as there are no big tables for everyone to sit at. The piano was fun and some good singers sang throughout the night. It's a nice bar but after going, I don't think it's my vibe.

Yelp
After a date night at Sonder Shaker, we decided to walk down Main St. While I've always heard about Nye's, I've never actually visited. I'm so glad we did! The bartender was very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. We ordered a gimlet as well as another vodka based drink but easily substituted gin. While our drinks were good, I will say they've were heavy on the lime juice. This wasn't a problem for us because we do love the brightness of this citrus. We enjoyed sitting at the bar watching Olympic replays. It was a nice, colorful atmosphere with gorgeous murals on the walls. I definitely think the high point would be visiting at night to listen to the live piano music.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Cute eclectic atmosphere with live music and drinks; no food. Bartender was ok personality wise, informing us it would be a few until he gets to us, so no big deal. What is a big deal is when you order a $13 drink and you're given a 1/2 drink! I would have been embarrassed ti serve the half drink I received. My face should have said it all and place is small enough he probably heard me. Drink was tasty just not worth $13. Overall service was mediocre drinks expensive but entertainment good! FYI They do not serve food.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
I had no idea that Nye's had re-open. I went went a girlfriend for a late night drink and to our delight they have sing-a-long going on! It was a lot of fun for us being in our mid 30's. The service was quite slow though so that is why we gave it a 3 vs a 5

Yelp
While the idea of a piano bar is novel and should be an enjoyable experience, everything else about this place is less than stellar. It's small and tightly packed with people. Unless you are one of the handful of folks that scores a curved booth, the seating is uncomfortable. The acoustics are abysmal and make talking with your table matés impossible (nor does it benefit the music). Each time I've been here the waitstaff has been rude and inattentive. There's no food and the drinks are pricey. Parking is limited to on the street meters. I question if I'll make a return visit after the last one. If a bar that is tightly packed and/or standing room with terrible acoustics and inattentive staff is your scene, this is the place. There are much better bar scenes to congregate with friends.

Yelp
Celebrated our moms 95th birthday Saturday night and Chris, the piano player, was awesome. He sang happy birthday to her and several of her favorite songs - we couldn't have had a better time. Our mom had a great time!! Above and beyond to make this night so special. Thanks so much and words cannot describe our appreciation for elevating this beautiful memory.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Used to be fun. Now the piano player sucks. Listen, this lady is straight up mean. Not mean like 'I'm tired of dealing with drunk requests". Mean like "I'm disappointed I didn't live up to my parents expectations and now I'm drunk and taking it out on you.".I wouldn't recommend going until she inevitably burns out.

Amanda H.

Yelp
Came here after work and absolutely excellent service and delicious cocktails! Service was incredible. My server was so kind and watched my drink when I went to the restaurant. Such a good vibe!
google avatar

Abby P.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Gotta love those neon lights! They serve some dang good moscow mules and the karaoke appears to start very early in the night which is rare. The bartender was nice and the options for food and more drink nearby are great. Check this place out if you're in that area! We had asian food across the street and down the block a block away after visiting here and enjoyed it!

Kevin S.

Yelp
Bartender refused to serve me a drink because it was "too much work" and bartender was serving friends but refused service to everyone else.... Please avoid

Yelp
A piano bar in a great area of town? I'm there! I'd never been to Nye's prior to its remodeling, so I can't compare it to what the establishment previously was. What I CAN tell you is this is a great spot to check out for fantastic live piano music, karaoke, and delicious cocktails. My friend and I got here early on a Friday night (around 9 pm) so there was still plenty of open seating at the bar, and even a booth available (which we snagged). They've got a lot of interesting cocktails on their menu, which you can upgrade to a double for $3 more (you get double the alcohol...so why hold back?). Plenty of wine and beer options too, if you're feeling more conservative. My favorite part of the night was getting on stage and singing karaoke! There's a booklet at the table with suggested song selections (that the pianist definitely knows how to play) but you can try putting in other requests too. Good idea to slide the pianist a tip with your song request. The lady performing that night was hilariously sassy and made the whole bar laugh throughout the night. Don't be shy and make sure you put on a good show for the crowd! Also, the bar got pretty packed around 11 pm, so be prepared to stand if you're a latecomer. Definitely coming back at some point. Make sure you eat beforehand (no food menu) or swing by Savoy's afterward for late night pizza (like we did)!

Yelp
It's quaint little bar musicals nice pricing was a little off for some of the drinks service was a little slow all together if you're not in a hurry and you just need a night to relax go there it's a good place to hang out and listen to piano
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
İ love it here. Eat food before you go though as they don't serve food. İt's like a speakeasy with a modern twist. İt's the new place for any celebration. Don't be a stranger nyes!

Rose D.

Yelp
Great bar! Loved the vibe! Wish we had been staying in town longer to go multiple nights!
google avatar

Helen J.

Yelp
I walked in to meet a few friends - they already had drinks in tow. I was the sober driver and asked for a water - the waitress said "San Pellegrino or Fiji?". I asked for tap water but she said tap water is only for "paying guests." Huh? What kind of policy is that? My friends are each buying two $15 cocktails and you want me to pay $4 for a bottled water? I was shocked. The piano guy was doing a good job and the ambiance is nice. Service is not super attentive and drinks average $15. No reason for us to come back!
google avatar

Jacob R.

Yelp
Stopped in after having dinner nearby, I had heard of this legendary place before the tear down/re-do but had sadly never gone then. The piano player this night was awesome and kept the place lively. Our waitress was fine. I would go back for the music, maybe for the happy hour as the drinks are priced very high($14 for a basic mixed drink+tax and tip in my experience).

Siera C.

Yelp
Literally one of the worst bar experiences I've ever had. Had a group of friends go there to grab drinks and the GM came up to us and was extremely rude and kicked us out because not every single person in the group was ordering a drink. The employee cussed at us and told us never to come back, which is so unprofessional and uncalled for. The GM should be FIRED if NYEs actually wants to stay in business. I will be telling my everyone I know to never come here. Don't waste your money here!!!

Isabella R.

Yelp
I don't go to bars to be judged by the bartenders, I come to have a nice time and drink. Don't come to this establishment unless you wanted to be kicked out for having opposing views from them. It's 2022, not the 1800s, completely unprofessional staff that refuses to serve costumers after eavesdropping on conversations that never included them in the first place. The employee knows who he is, and so does the owner who refused to do anything.

Greg N.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years but the second I start talking about rights they spit in my drink and cash me out. Just walk past when you see this establishment.
google avatar

Jaysa J.

Yelp
We arrived at 10pm on a Friday. My two friends and I happened to find three open seats at the bar and as we attempted to sit down, the male bartender snapped and said "You can NOT sit there!" Oh, okay...we walk away and happen to snag a booth. Minutes later, three people sat in those empty chairs- I guess the bartender "allowed" it and happily served them. Very odd and it felt prejudicial. Besides that, we enjoyed ourselves. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the drinks were delicious albeit expensive. The pianist was fabulous and had a great voice- it was a really nice change from the usual Billboard radio hits that are overplayed at bars. The overall vibes of the place were relaxing, old school, very comfortable. I would definitely go back but I'd avoid that specific bartender!
google avatar

Mandy H.

Yelp
Love coming here. Be prepared to stand around to wait for a place to sit though on busy nights. The best spot is around the piano if you like to sing or enjoy the music. You write in requests on a paper slip and if you add a couple bucks, it'll for sure get played. They offer a lyric book too if you need the words to any songs that they have listed. The piano player is typically really flexible and will play almost anything though, you just may need to find your own lyrics. The vibe is classy and fun. Street parking only. Drinks can be a bit pricey if you're going for a signature drink on their menu. Around $13-15 per drink. I just got a gin and tonic for about $7. Some beers on the list are only around $4-5 though. Highly HIGHLY recommend this place. But also selfishly want to keep it a secret cause I don't want it to get any busier!--but they deserve the business!
google avatar

Annie M.

Yelp
Don't waste your time... waitress forgot our water after asking 3 times. Then messed up all 3 drinks that we ordered by bringing a white instead of red wine, forgetting ingredients in others, etc. Piano is a cool idea but there was a lull of like 2 min between songs that makes it so awkward and quiet in there. Filled with drunk people when we were there too and it was only 7pm. Also no food served.

Claire H.

Yelp
I love coming in for a cocktail at Nye's! The live karaoke is always a hit. Leah, who doubles as both a server and a bartender makes the BEST DRINKS!!! She gives great suggestions and her service is astoundingly attentive and kind. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
General manager on a power trip. No lie. Was verbally and physically harassed out of the bar. Nye's of yesteryear was a fun bar to have a night at. New Nye's is to be avoided. Take my word on it. To be avoided.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
The GM assults people. Flat out pushing people into busy traffic. Got kicked out for (allegedly) saying something to the piano player who said we didn't say anything to her. Then the GM assults people on public sidewalks. Stay away from here if you want to say something to the friends you're with.

Michael M.

Yelp
Great cocktail lounge. Great music, live pianists who perform karaoke with guests. Incredible. I've been coming here for a few months, and the staff has been nothing but excellent. There's one bartender, a gentleman named Eric, fairly new lad, but has an excellent attitude and work ethic. Should definitely be promoted to the every night guy.
google avatar

Clint M.

Yelp
Was a great bar. Still a great bar. Go here and enjoy the atmosphere, super friendly bar staff and free Gardetto's.
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
I love the pianist here!! I love the ambiance and everything about this place. If you love to sing along or just feel like throwing back.. this is the place to be!

Austin B.

Yelp
Hannah was amazing! She made the group feel right at home and took amazing care of us. 10/10 for her.

D B.

Yelp
We had such a great time here! Who doesn't love singing along to your favorite songs and having great cocktails? The pianist readily played everyone's requests. "If you have a request and submit it with a couple bucks it's a request, otherwise it's a suggestion". We are from out of state but will go back again some day.

David M.

Yelp
Have been to Nye's many times when I lived in Mpls. Back for a visit and five minutes ago walked into the new Nye's. After biking riding with Nice Ride MN, I was thirsty and wanted to see the last five minutes of Vikings vs 49ers. When I asked for a glass of water, the bartender said "I can sell you a sparkling water." I said no thanks, Tao water was fine. He said no and "we don't allow squatters." I was shocked. The place was entirely empty. So much for ever returning to Nye's and I will be sure to share my experience with the two friends I am about to meet up with at the much friendlier Lorning Bar and Resturant.

Cheryl J.

Yelp
The restaurant is pretty cool. The wait staff pretty missing. Great music, good vibes, waitstaff door so unfortunate.

Kris I.

Yelp
So, so glad we stopped in here. We were lovers of the original Nye's. My husband and I were walking by on our way to the Aster and when we saw the Nye's sign and we decided we needed to check it out so we stopped in for a drink. Somehow, they kept the vibe of the original piano bar and yet totally classed the place up in a modern retro way. Super fun night singing with the piano maven!

Jim O.

Yelp
Wanna get away from the typical downtown scene, then head to Nyes! Fun staff and handcrafted drinks!!
