Got this recommendation after putting into Gemini: authentic, value for money, Portuguese traditional restaurant. This restaurant came up on top. So popular we had to wait outside to get a table. Service is better than it seems. It was full so we got a corridor table which was fine. There were more tables in the basement. Food was great. Tasty and efficient. Waiter recommended that we didn't over order as portions were generous. Ordered soups. Had the biftek and the cod buraco. Both lovely. Topped up the vinho verde with some tawny port after dessert. Came to be €65 for 2

Food was simple,authentic and so delicious . The fried sardines and the tomato risotto are irresistible and a must try dish Service was so warm , professional and friendly Nice local atmosphere tables are always full with local eating, enjoying and talking and small tv in the background showing a football match for Fc Porto ❤️

The restaurant is highly recommended and the food looked good at the other tables. Unfortunately, we didn’t know what to order. We had chicken curry and stewed squid, not much taste, just very salty. I would still recommend this place but not to order what we had. The bread/appetizers are not free, cost 1€ - 2,50€

Incredible food. Literally the tastiest most filling chicken and salad I’ve ever had. The service was outstanding and so was the food/drinks. The highlight was the cheesecake recommended by our server, which I have thought about loads since eating. This was definitely worth the queue (only a short one).

Great food, good price and good portion size. The menu is not big but everything we had was very good. They serve mostly fish and some meat dishes. I did not notice anything with crab, shrimp, clam or mussels. Come before 7:30 if you can or you might have to wait outside.

We didn't have time to taste it for a longer time, but the salmon was very good, the restaurant was packed just moments after opening, which is a good sign

Came here 3 times because I can’t find another place with better price/quality. Duck rice, fried sardines were great. Wish they can make the Wednesday special (meat and bean stew) available everyday. Service is average not that welcoming, but at least efficient.

Excellent food, big portions and fast service. The prices are very cheap and I think everything is homemade. The rice was a side dish included in the price of the fish.

Amazing food. My family and I have been in Portugal for the past week. The food has been OK, but we feel like it has been very generic and tailored toward tourists. This place, on the other hand is super authentic. The best restaurant we've been in, in Portugal. This place does not look anything special from the outside, but do not let the looks deceive you. I knew this place would be great when I saw a line of locals lining up around lunch time, before the place even opened. Probably one of the best meals I've had in my lifetime. I had duck rice, my wife had roasted pork (ribs), my 4-year old had chicken tenderloin. Everything was amazing. My kid passed out because he was tired after a full day of walking in Porto, yet he continued eating like zombie, because the food was so good.

Prior visit was during Covid lockdown. Tonight's dinner was nostalgic and heartwarming. Was seated in the spacious downstairs area, which was crowded and lively. Owner's son was very gracious and welcomed us as if we'd been there last week. Sampled the grilled fish once more. So good! The best meal in Porto, most underrated restaurant (at least on Yelp).

This restaurant was absolutely delicious!! It does get pretty busy during the lunch rush but we didn't wait too long for a table. To start, they brought us bread and butter, codfish fritters that were AMAZING, and salad. Just a warning, we didn't order apps, they just bring it to your table but you will see it on your tab. Everything was extremely affordable so we didn't mind. We also had the grilled pork chop and fries as well as the fish and potatoes. Everything was delicious. It was affordable and they were quick to bring our meals to the table. Beautiful upstairs, although we sat in the basement which we didn't mind. Highly recommend!!

We loved, i mean loved this place! Traditional Portuguese fare! the "feijoada" stands out....for me! Daily specials every day of the week: Friday is "tripas" day! Yummy. Thursday is "rojões", great also! Go early, 12:30 pm latest for lunch, to get a table, otherwise you must wait. Dinner time is less hectic but just as delicious! Ok i must mention sr manuel - the most "castiço" waiter i have met im porto ! What a charismatic hard working gentleman . Bem haja! Ricardo was also a pleasure.

The real deal! If you want a true locals place in Porto, this is it. I am confident we were the only non-Portuguese people eating lunch there that day despite the restaurant being in a busy area and by a lot of hotels. We had to wait in line outside to get in but we were prepared for that based on reviews we'd seen somewhere. We didn't wait long maybe 15-20 minutes. The place is crammed tight but cozy. We did notice at about 2pm it started to look empty so if you don't want to wait long show up after 1:30pm or so but keep in mind they close lunch at 2:30pm. One of the things we really love about eating in Portugal is finding deals on fresh fish. This was a score in that department. $9 each - see photos for serving size. The chocolate dessert was ridiculous good.

I really enjoyed Buraco. I am from the US and read all the great reviews. My wife and I arrived in Porto in time for a late mid day meal on a Thursday. The place was full, but we were seated after less than 5 minutes. Tables are close together, but not uncomfortable. The staff were kind, friendly and funny. The area was clean and well maintained. It was so refreshing to have an indoor meal in a restaurant that we could talk at a normal volume. I'm tired of LOUD restaurants in the US. We were ready for a big meal and accepted the bread, olives and cod cakes. The cod cakes were so good I had another round. For my meal I had the grilled sardines w rice&tomato sauce, which were fantastic, and my wife had the pork chop, house chips and salad. The house tinto went nicely with it. After dinner a port was our desert. Buraco kicked off our stay in Porto nicely and I would highly recommend this spot for Portuguese fare.

I'm a transplanted Austin, Texan, now living in Porto. On strong recommendation of Portuguese friends, we stopped in for lunch and were very disappointed. Service was fast, but we did not appreciate being relegated to the windowless basement when many, many tables were open on the bright, attractive ground floor. The menu looked lovely, filled with all the traditional offerings we've grown to know and love. We selected 1/2 dose of rice and duck and 1/2 dose of hake fillets--both familiar dishes we've eaten before at humble tascas. I wondered aloud if we were ordering too much food because in our experience at other traditional restaurants, 1/2 dose makes about two servings. Our food arrived in rather modest quantities. The hake was flaky, but flavorless. The rice with duck was very poor with dry meat and what appeared to be rewarmed, undercooked rice. Glad we previewed the place because we'd hoped Buraco would be the perfect place to take a large family group who will be visiting soon. That certainly won't happen! My three-star rating is generous.

This is probably the most outstanding kitchen we experienced in Porto for traditional Portugese food. The batter fried sardines served with tomato rice epitomized the best of Portugese food. The taste was delicious, the cooking was perfect. We enjoyed all our food so much (especially the tomato rice and fish preparations) we could easily return a few times. Their soup (kale/potato) was rather bland. The prices are really a bargain for the quality and quantity of food. It's amazing! Good wine selection to be had. Little English service but the menu is translated. Tables are packed tightly in this tiny space, it's very popular and you should go early! It's fairly close to the Mercado do Bolhau, and nearby there are good shops for a spot of shopping: an excellent fruit seller and bargain clothing store.

The last reviews for this restaurant were about a year ago, so you should all know that this place still deserves its five stars. A little neighborhood restaurant that we luckily arrived at just at opening time, because it was packed with a line out the door when we left. The Hake, and fried pork in garlic and paprika (Thursday's special), were both delicious and more food than we could finish. Great house wine too! We thought the meals in Spain were reasonably priced until we came here. Service was brisk and efficient in at least three languages.

Excellent place... The food is great, the prices are very reasonable and the service is also top notch. We had the sardines for two, and it came with the rice and beans, which were excellent. Also tried the green soup, and it had a very at home feel to the way it is prepared. The house wine is also plentiful, one order is basically a full carafe.

I have to recommend this little place if you happen to be in Porto! It's so easy when you are a tourist to ignore small, traditional places like this one because it doesn't necessarily look the most attractive but it is worth paying attention to! Firstly it is really cheap, 6€ for a plate of breaded pork, potatoes, rice and cauliflower. Bargain! Plus the food is so tasty and freshly prepared. I had chocolate mousse for dessert which was also amazing. Overall the bill came to 23€ for two huge meals and desserts, half a litre of wine and water. The service wasn't a game changer but pretty typical of what I experienced across the board in Porto. I found it quite intimidating walking in places like this one that is full of locals but they are clearly used to tourist like me speaking broken Portuguese!

Great value! Low price compared with most restaurants in Porto downtown, but good quality. I like the cod fish. Wish that I had visited this restaurant more often than wasting money at a lot of higher priced restaurants in the downtown area.

Prices are very reasonable for the large portions they serve. The fried sardines were definitely a win and the sea bass was delicious as well. The sardines came with a delicious rice in tomato sauce. The only reason I'm not giving them five stars is because the service wasn't ideal. We always struggled to get the waiter's attention if we wanted something. This place is good for traditional Portuguese food and was conveniently located next door to our hotel.

After reading the reviews of this restaurants, I decided to go there since it's close to my hotel. I was the second customer in the restaurant. Indeed, the fried sardines and bean rice were delicious. The wait staff doesn't speak English at all because when I asked to add a salad, he nodded, but I never got one. I also ordered a carrot cake which is quite different from the one in the States. The restaurants was full when I was about to leave. All the customers were local people. The staff is nice, my whole bill came to 9.5 euros in total (sardines and rice, a bottle of water and carrot cake).

Such a traditional lunch restaurant with authentic Portuguese cuisine and atmosphere. Worth the wait.

Place was so great we ate there 4 nights in a row. Go with the special of the day, whatever it is. Can't go wrong. Affordable prices, authentic food. Highly recommend. Really special place.

This place is like the best hidden secret of Porto's cuisine. Not a single tourist, only myself. I came here two days ago and I thought first impressions are always overestimated. But no. No way. This is the place. This is a traditional Portuguese place. Good abundant dishes, all prepared in a traditional way (I presume), with a local atmosphere. I've tried the tripas a moda do Porto and they are, I might say, unbelievable. If you wish to try them just be sure you land here on a Friday or a Sunday, because that's when they have them on menu. Don't get offended if they don't pay you attention, or if they don't speak English, this is Portugal, try to speak a word or two in Portuguese. Don't miss this spot, but don't tell everybody or we'll break it.

We went here today for lunch. Like wow. What a great traditional Portuguese restaurant. The sea bass was basically awesome. And the prices are really good. What a great find. I would totally recommend that anyone go here!

This was recommended by our Airbnb host and it did not disappoint. The sardines were fantastic (salty with a good crunch) with the tomato rice and my friend who does not enjoy seafood loved the salmon. It was very authentic and served quickly. The wine was cheap and delicious as well. I would highly recommend!
